Today, will cover a few of the things I learned this week while on this path to being a lifelong learner. Instead of a MASTERCLASS episode, where I break a topic down with a deep dive, I will give the cliff notes, highlights of what I've learned this week and then I'll attach the source from where the content came from in case you wanted to learn more. In this episode we talk about:1. Giving yourself a “license to sin.” In the book “The willpower instinct” by Dr. Kelly McGonigal, she references a common behavior that most of us do where in life we decide that we have been “good” in a certain circumstance, and in turn that gives us permission to be bad.”Dr. McGonigal explores the concept of the "license to sin" and how being good can actually give people permission to behave badly. She explains that when people feel like they have been good and exercised self-control, they feel entitled to indulge in a reward or a treat, even if it is something that goes against their long-term goals or values.2. We then tie that into an interview that neuroscientist Professor Andrew Huberman had on my favorite podcast “The Model Health Show” w/ Shawn Stevenson where they discussed how to achieve the holy grail of Life. And the holy grail of life, is when effort feels good! Now, no one gets to be in this state all the time, but he argues that when we push ourselves physically, we get multiple opportunities to go from the "I don't want to do this,"state, to “I'm going to do this for a purpose of growth, and doing it anyway and the science of benefiting from that mindset.3. We talk about how in order to obtain your goals, it's so important to not look at the surface level of why you're going after that goal… and to take the time to dig into the DEEPER WHY… this begs the question… how do we find our own deeper why. So we are going to figure out how to really find your deeper why by asking the right questions. We are going to do this based on the book by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan titled “The ONE Thing.”Everything in life comes down to the questions we ask. When we ask great questions, we find clarity, direction and momentum in the answers.Of course, the opposite is also true. Ask the wrong questions, and we end up way off course, because if we're asking the wrong questions, there can be no right answers. I think if you use the tools we talk about in this episode, you'll really get a clearer picture as to why you are going after your goals, and with that increased clarity comes incredibly beneficial side effects which will help you toward success. 4. And we will finish the episode by answering a question that I get on a very frequent basis… what should my macro split be when I'm going for my fat loss goals? How many carbs, fats and proteins should I eat? Is it as easy as me giving you a percentage of each one and, that being that?? If you've listened to me for any period of time… I hope you know by now that the answer is definitely not that simple. “When we serve other people, we get healing. When people find their mark and they find their signature, that's how they create an impact in the world.” -Rachel Best It's easy to think that we do not matter as much. We may feel like we don't have much to offer the world or that our story cannot make that much of a difference. But it's important to remember that we've all been given the chance to be part of something amazing—to help other people change their lives for the better. We just need to find our unique signature and start using it! In this episode, Daniel sits with coach, speaker, and author, Rachel Best. When given the opportunity to affect change, Rachel immediately responded, “Yes!”. And with that opportunity, she was able to help other people and herself to heal and live their purpose. Listen in as Daniel and Rachel share how we can find our signature and make our mark on the world, which is also the title of her book and podcast (COMING SOON!). As a weight loss coach, Rachel also shares tips on how to get started with our weight loss journey, the challenges we may encounter after we've lost weight, and how we can delete old thought processes and find a new soundtrack. One thing that has been greatly affected by the pandemic is the workplace setup. Most companies have had to tweak operations, and sometimes even to make drastic changes, like going from 100% in-person to 100% remote. Even as organizations think about phasing back into some version of in-person work, it still makes sense to offer remote and teleworking options for your employees’ and business’s health and security. You can always shuffle a number of your staff to work on-site and remotely, even rotate them if needed. Naturally, these are added efforts for the company, but these are much-needed tradeoffs. It’s a complex balancing act, and compromises are surely necessary, but when executed correctly, you’ll be surprised that employees can be as efficient, if not more so, when they work remotely. In this episode, Dawn talks about the absolute need to be flexible in your workplace operations and the importance of adjusting to the ever-changing situation. One take-away: what is most important is that your employees perform and thrive as well as they can and set them up for success, regardless of their situation. A couple of years ago, a magazine I enjoyed reading announced they shifted focus, thus, overhauling their content and a lot of their staff. With that, its quality, in my opinion, has gone downhill. This magazine used to have brilliant content with entertaining articles containing helpful and valuable information. Now, the articles aren’t as dynamic and detailed. I find them quite generic, and there’s not much value in them as before. I then realized why I am no longer drawn to it; they are writing to the lowest common denominator. When information is conveyed with the lowest common denominator, there’s a danger of losing substance… and ultimately losing its target audience. When you’re addressing the lowest common denominator, then you’re leaving out a good portion of the world. Listen in as Dawn discusses the lowest common denominator, stagnation, and how to overcome it by working in your Zone of Genius. It was a delight interviewing Cedric Nwafor, founder of ROOTS Africa. It’s my pleasure to share his story growing up in Cameroon and touch on things that our organizations have in common like: Finding the Deeper Why of an organization Identifying individuals’ Deeper Why Re-engaging participants, especially in remote groups Leaders’ roles in discovering the Deeper Why Listen in as we go through some of the challenges he faces with aligning groups across the globe and some solutions we brainstormed together…. all leading to a more effective and productive organization. About Cedric Nwafor A passion for agriculture and its people drives Cedric Nwafor, a social entrepreneur and public speaker who has organized, facilitated, and spoken at various African and US events. He is the founder of ROOTS Africa, a youth-led organization that combats hunger, poverty, and exclusion by connecting students and agricultural experts in the US to farming communities in Africa. While earning his bachelor’s degree, he visited farms in Idaho and Maryland and Rwanda, Liberia, Cameroon, Ghana, and Uganda to learn different farm life and management approaches. Along the way, Cedric became an agricultural evangelist, engaging African youth in civic affairs in both cities and rural communities. He believes that engaging the young generations in agriculture is vital to the African continent’s future and the socio-economic well-being of its peoples. Cedric previously served as a Managing Partner of the Afrika Youth Movement, leading its five strategic committees, and as a Mentor and Advocate for Streetwise Partners, an organization supporting low-income populations. He was a 2016 nominee for the African Youth in Agriculture Award and commencement speaker at his graduation from the University of Maryland College of Agriculture Natural Resources with a BA in Agriculture and Resource Economics focusing on Entrepreneurship. In organizations/companies, training is something that we go through regularly. Be it for operations or human resources, held by the company you’re working on or an external firm, we all experience training in one form or another. Management training, diversity and inclusion training, compliance training may seem superfluous, but we shouldn’t take these for granted. Often these are treated just like checking a box; we only go through it because it’s required, and then set it aside after and get on with our day. However, there is a reason why such training exists, and there are valuable things to pick up from it. If you’re attending training, either virtually or in person, an important thing you can do is to figure out the “Deeper Why” and ask yourself these questions, “How can I integrate what I’ve learned into practice?” and “How can I implement these to my daily work-life?” Listen in as Dawn Shuler shares the importance of training and why we need to pay a bit more attention to it. A couple of years ago, we were interviewing individual employees as part of our Company Climate Inventory with a client. During this interview, I asked the gentleman about his strengths and gifts, especially with regard to managing others. He said, “Managing good people is easy.” “What makes someone ‘good’?” I asked. “Not lazy,” was his response. Is that really all that it is? Just someone doing their job, and therefore managing that person is effortless? No, it takes more than that. Listen in as I go a little deeper into defining good managers and good employees. Most companies would say that their customers and clients are of paramount importance and that they pride themselves on great customer service. (Have you ever heard a company boast about its horrible customer service?) However, we all know that not all companies have good customer service. Good customer service isn’t about that it’s the “right thing to do.” It also makes great business sense. A customer is 4x as likely to defect to a competitor if the problem is service-related, rather than if it’s price- or product-related. 55% of customers would pay extra to guarantee better service. Listen in as Dawn Shuler recounts a story of customer service gone bad, resulting in that defection mentioned above, and the criteria for choosing new companies.
