Hello roaches and worms. This year's Holiday/Christmas season has been quite hectic. We are throwing it back to an episode that may have fallen on the cutting room floor for more than a few of you. In 2019 we did a White Elephant Gift Exchange with secondhand / found items. There was about 8 or 9 of us gathered around 3 microphones. Most of us scream at points to make sure our jokes get over!To you and yours, happy holidays from THRIFTY. The only podcast with two different types of bug/insect imagery, making SEO Search that much harder.

Introducing Aaron Anderson Aaron Anderson has been working in the SEO industry full-time since 2013. While working and consulting for multiple SEO agencies he saw a big demand for high-quality link-building services, which led him to start offering those services as a freelancer and then growing those services into a full-fledged link-building agency. He is also the host of the podcast “Let's Talk Link Building”, which dives into all the different approaches and strategies one might take to build backlinks for their online business. What problem do you solve? He will help you understand what link building is and how to navigate the whole SEO and link building industry. Show Notes: Quick explanation of SEO: Search engines look at content of your query and then they look at all the websites and results. Next, they narrow it down to authority and trust. The more links a website has, the more trusted the site is and the more likely the search engine is to send people to that site. When you link a different website, you are giving them a vote of confidence. To give your site more credibility, you want other sites to link to your site. Certain content is more likely to get backlinks such as a free tool or assessment. The more trusted the site that has your backlink, the more beneficial it is to you. Beware of buying backlinks. Sometimes those services are using websites that are created solely for the purpose of selling backlinks. Those types of backlinks won't give you the credibility you want. If you outsource your backlink building. Make sure you are using someone who is transparent and willing to educate you. It is also important to get different opinions. Google tries to identify and perhaps even penalize websites that are there solely for backlinks. Aaron likes to teach others about link-building. Aaron Anderson's Recharge Round What habit do you think has led to success in your life? Knowing himself and knowing what he's creating. He wants to know he's creating value for others. If you had one do-over, what would it be? He didn't have confidence when he first started to scale his business. If he had to do it over he would try to instill confidence in himself. When it comes to your blog audience, there's no denying that size matters. While your blog traffic is not the most important thing when it comes to profitability, you've got to have someone to sell to. And if you've ever felt that your blog isn't growing fast enough, you're not alone. Before we start, remember that you don't need a huge audience to make a profit from your blog. When you have a well-defined, focused niche, your audience might not be as large as others, but they will convert better. That said, here's how to maximize your audience. Retaining Current Readers A lot of advice about increasing blog traffic focuses on getting new readers to your blog. And, yes, that's important. But it's far easier to get someone who's already engaged with and loved your blog to come back and read more than it is to convince someone new to give you a try. So, let's start with some tips and tricks that will increase your traffic by getting one-time readers to become loyal fans. 1. Stay true to your niche There's a reason that Module 1, Lesson 1 in Teacher Blog Academy is all about defining your niche. Your niche - the intersection of what you write about, who you write for, and how you help them - is your guiding star when you make any decision for your blog. What should I write about this week? Look to your niche. Which social media platform should I use to market my blog? Look to your niche. If your niche is finances for 20-something women with a focus on money mindset, stick with it. Don't suddenly start providing stock tips and your opinion about which Wall St. bankers should be in jail… That's not why your audience comes to you. It will confuse them and Google. And like Donald Miller says, “When you confuse, you lose.” 2. Email your list Your list is a group of people who like what you have to say, and want to hear more. They have self-identified themselves as potential superfans. But even loyal readers are busy. They need to be reminded to go check out your latest post. Think of it this way… I enjoy having a fresh, clean smelling house, but I still have an alarm on my phone to remind me to clean the litter boxes every Monday night. No matter how much people love your content, they need reminders when you put something new out. And by emailing them, you increase the chance that they come back and read your latest post. 3. Write great posts This may seem obvious, but there will be weeks when you feel like just phoning it in and publishing any old thing. While it may take extra time and effort, creating content that truly speaks to your audience's needs is worth it. Answer a question that your readers have. Even if you feel like you've answered it before. (You're a teacher, so you understand explaining things multiple times in multiple ways, right?) Address a mistake you see your ideal audience making. Give them something to think about in a new way… but remember that putting out content isn't the goal - helping your readers is. 4. Tweak your titles A blog title, whether it shows up on social media, Google, or your own website, should entice readers to click and find out more. A great title lives somewhere on that fine line between clearly stating what your post is about without giving it all away… It's a balancing act. Gaining New Readers Once you've done what you can to retain readers and get them coming back to your blog, it's time to think about how to attract new readers to your blog. 5. SEO Search engine optimization (SEO) is a behind-the-scenes process in which you make it easier for search engines, like Google, Bing!, and others to recommend your content to others. According to Neil Patel, “The main Google keyword ranking factors include search intent, search volume, quality of the content, number of backlinks, domain authority, and page loading speed.” This means that specific focus on using the appropriate keywords, producing great content that builds your authority, and upping you page speed, with something like SG Optimizer can all increase your visibility on search engines. 6. Market your blog “Build it and they will come.” is a movie slogan, not a growth plan. As of this writing, there are nearly 1.2 billion websites online, with more being shared every day. No one is going to accidentally stumble upon your blog. You have to tell people about it. This is called marketing. Social media is a fantastic - and free - place to start marketing your blog. When you publish a new post, share it on social media. Then, continue to share it on an ongoing basis so that people who are new to you, or didn't happen to see it the first time can find it. You can also make it easy for your readers to share your blog with plugins like Social Warfare. You can also use marketing channels like Pinterest and YouTube, but you can also guest blog, appear on other people's podcasts or shows, and even just updating your email signature can let people know about your site. 7. Expand your network No man is an island, even in the digital age. While you may be a solopreneur, if you want to grow your blog you're going to want help. Get to know other bloggers and build relationships that can further support your readers. Take advantage of the technology available to network in communities that wouldn't exist in the past, like Facebook groups, and start to build a reputation for helping others in your area of expertise. This is not an invitation to spam - even under the guise of helping - just offer guidance, advice, and support with no strings attached. 8. Give it time. The internet may be filled with stories of overnight successes, but behind that “overnight” success was a lot of patience and hard work. No one puts up a site and starts raking in millions the next day (unless they're doing some Breaking Bad level illegal stuff). Time allows Google to know and recommend your blog in searches. Time builds up loyal followers who tell their friends about you. Time lets you create systems and processes to handle more readers and customers. There's no rush. Again, blog traffic is not the end-all-be-all of blog metrics. You should see your page views go up month over month, slowly. There's only a problem if you're not seeing growth overall. In Teacher Blog Academy, I'll teach you how to make decisions that will help you build a profitable blog in less time, with fewer roadblocks. You can enroll now at teacherblogacademy.com

The internet is crowded and it can be hard for a new blogger to get noticed online. And if you're just starting out it seems like there's so much to… how do you know where to put your time and energy so that your posts get found, read, shared, and engaged with? While it's not enough to just write great posts, you also don't have to do all the things to stand out. It's all about using your time and energy on the right tasks - ones that will give you the best returns - and not overwhelming yourself with trying to do everything. Here are 5 things you need to do for each blog post that will help people find you and grow your business. 1. Graphics Social media where the majority of people get their information these days, which means our feeds are full. In order to stop people from scrolling, you need graphics that get their attention. The other benefit of graphics is that they take up more space in people's feeds, so they have more time to see your post and stop scrolling. For each post I recommend you create 3 graphics: 1280 x 720 px for Facebook and/ or Twitter 1080 x 1080 px for Instagram and/or Facebook 1000 x 1500 px for Pinterest If you use a program like PicMinkey or Canva Pro, you can create templates for yourself, so each week you can simply enter your current post info and save yourself time. Using a template also helps you have a consistent look for your blog posts - people will start to recognize your work! 2. SEO Search engine optimization, commonly known as SEO, is what allows search engines like Google and Bing, and Yahoo! To understand what your blog post is about and recommend it to people when they enter search criteria. Yes, search engines do crawl your content to “read” it, but to help them get a better idea of the focus of your post you need to set an SEO keyword, meta description, and URL slug. I recommend using the free plugin Yoast to make managing all of this as easy as possible. Yoast will scan your post and give you an SEO rating, as well as recommendations as to how to improve your SEO. Once you review and follow Yoasts recommendations a few times, you'll start to build the techniques into your posts automatically. 3. A Great Title For your blog posts you want to craft a title that is both catchy and clear. A potential reader should know what they're going to get when they click on your post. When bloggers try to get cute with post titles, it leaves readers confused as to what the post is about. Since we all have an extremely limited amount of time, people are far less likely to click on an unclear post title. As Donald Miller of Business Made Simple says, “When you confuse, you lose.” Instead of clever, aim for clear. The free Headline Analyzer tool will read your post title and give you a score based on a set of criteria. You can pay for deeper analysis, but I've always found the free version to work just fine. As an added bonus, a great title can also boost your SEO by making your posts primary idea even more clear! 4. A Concise Description When your post comes up on Google or social media, an easy to understand description will give viewers a clear idea of what your post will contain. This further helps them decide to click on your link or not. In this case, brevity is your friend because Google will clip your description at 155-160 characters, so it's important to have a succinct 1-2 sentence summary of your post. To save time, you can use the same description for Twitter. Once you add a link to the post, you'll be close to the 280 character count. When it comes to other social media, you typically have more space to use for your post description, so play around with various lengths to see what works best for you. Pinterest limits you to 500 characters, Instagram to 2,200, and Facebook to just over 63k. Another bonus, a clear description can boost your post's SEO even more! 5. Distribution Strategy Last, but certainly not least, you need to have a plan to distribute your blog post so even more people can find it. Before I even get to strategy, let me state that there is no need to create a complicated distribution schedule. In fact, as you get started, I suggest that you choose a single platform on which to share your content, then expand slowly once you get your system down. Email. Every time you publish a new post you should email your list. These are the people who value what you have to say so much that they gave you their email address! They want to know when you're sharing more good stuff, so let them know! Social Media. Pick a social media platform to start with and decide when you're going to share your new content. It might feel excessive at first, but share your post more than once. People are busy and social media feeds move fast, so you can't assume that people will see your initial share. In fact, only about 3-5% of your social followers will see your post at all thanks to the algorithms that control the feed. Pinterest. Not a social media platform, Pinterest is a visual search engine and another place for you to share your content. Like social media, you're going to want to share on Pinterest more than once because the website has stated that they want “fresh pins,” meaning unique descriptions and images each time you share. Interestingly, getting your post into more hands via social media and your email list can boost your SEO reach even further! More visits to your site, especially if they stay there for a while and read multiple posts, tells Google that you're an authority and people find your site valuable… making them more likely to recommend you! Remember that you don't have to focus on all of these tasks at once. Just do one thing at a time, give yourself time to master it, then add in the next task. With time and continuous effort, these small changes will add up and your blog will grow. Ready for the next step? Check out Content Made Simple and learn my proven 3-step system for planning, crafting, and distributing your content!

We've thrown around the term micro-influencer a lot on this show. The term refers to someone with generally around 5,000 to 50,000 followers. They're probably not quite to the point of making a living doing it, but they have an impact on a fair number of people. Lots of brands love micro-influencers because they can be cheaper and less hassle to deal with. No offense to our mega-influencer friends, but let's be honest, once you get someone whose primary income is through influencer marketing activity, or content creation for brands, and certainly when you mix in a management person, well … brand people see layers of costs, people to deal with, paper work and so on. That's not to say that micro-influencers shouldn't be paid. And certainly, anyone who is creating content for your brand, regardless of how few followers they might have, deserves to be compensated for their craftsmanship. But micro-influencers bring certain advantages to the table for businesses who want to leverage influencers or scale the number of influencers they use, without always having to find more money in the marketing budget. David Morneau leads a Canadian firm called Inbeat Agency which specializes in helping brands build campaigns with micro-influencers. And they're quite good at it. I invited him to sit and chat with us about the advantages of going micro-, some of which you might find surprising. David's background and the seed that became Inbeat Agency, was work in SEO -- Search engine optimization. Those two disciplines don't often overlap. We sat down this week to talk about micro-influencers, how they can impact a brands' SEO, reputation and bottom line. I think you'll enjoy the discussion as we make an argument for going small with your influence marketing. Instead of a traditional sponsor for this episode of Winfluence, I want to take a moment to tell you about a new project I've launched with Ryan Foland, Kim Garst and our friends at Get.Online … the dot-online domain name provider. Ryan, Kim and I have produced three online courses that combined form the .Online Business Academy. This series of easy to follow online courses is built to help you start your own business, make a business plan, build a website for your business and start driving revenue for whatever it is you're passionate about. Ryan starts off the academy's curriculum with a course on how to come up with a business idea that doesn't suck. The course from Kim is how to write an online business plan you will actually use. And then my course is how to set up and launch your business website to attract customers. The .Online Business Academy is FREE! You heard that right. FREE. The lessons are broken up into short videos and activities, so you can do a little at a time. Or, of course you can dive in and complete the entire academy lessons in about four hours. So if you've been thinking about starting your own business or you or someone you know needs help to take that idea to the next level, The .Online Business Academy is live and waiting for you. I got to interview John Vuong. John is a seasoned sales professional and Internet marketer with an exceptional track record helping companies grow their clientele and profits. Through 15 years of experience working with CEOs, business owners, and marketing leaders at some of Canada’s most successful corporations, John developed a deep understanding of local marketing dynamics and consumer behavior. John’s entrepreneurial spirit and experience working with more than 5,000 local business owners inspired him to start his own company, Local SEO Search, in 2013. His parents were among the last of the “boat people” refugees who immigrated from South Vietnam in 1980, and John was born a few months later. Like many newcomers, his family persevered through difficult times, and relied upon help from various community organizations (including the Salvation Army and Canada Employment Centre). We spoke about: 00:30 Being an entrepreneur. 6:25 Real world experience is key. 8:05 Always wanting to do better. And much more. Have you cut back on marketing due to the COVID-19 pandemic? You're not alone. A lot of business owners are trying to save money by reducing their spending. Cutting back is understandable and may be necessary, but marketing isn't a luxury for your business. It's a necessity. And it's possible to keep things going even if you need to reduce your spending. Here are 11 ideas to help you stay in the marketing flow. 1. Focus on Social Media According to Statista, Americans are spending more time on social media now than they did before the pandemic. That translates to an opportunity for businesses who need low-cost ways to engage their target customers. It's a good time to share the ways your business is coping with the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight the ways your business can help people cope with social distancing and stay-at-home orders. You may also want to consider boosting your ads or running a page promotion to get your business in front of potential new customers. 2. Take Advantage of Cheap Advertising Speaking of running ads, one of the biggest potential upsides to the pandemic is that advertising costs are lower than usual. If you're wondering how low prices are, the answer might surprise you. There's no hard data, but anecdotally, marketing agencies are reporting costs that are between 50% and 75% lower than they were before the pandemic. That includes pay per click advertising and social media advertising, where you'll mostly pay based on impressions. You may want to investigate the costs for your target market and rethink your budget to take advantage of the savings while they last. 3. Don't Lose Sight of SEO Search engine optimization is easy to neglect when money is tight. There's a tendency among small business owners to invest in SEO only when it becomes a problem. The issue with that mindset is that SEO is the longest game in digital marketing. If you don't stay on top of it now, you could find yourself facing an uphill battle to regain your coveted page one rank on Google. You don't need to spend a lot of money, but you should stay on top of keyword research and maintain your local SEO to ensure you don't slip. 4. Create and Promote Special Offers It comes as no surprise that consumer spending has taken a hit since the beginning of the pandemic. A lot of Americans have lost their jobs and as a result, they're being more careful with their money than they were before. However, consumers are still spending money. People are looking for convenience and entertainment – anything that can make staying at home more palatable. That means this is a great time to create special offer s that are tailored to your audience. Think about what your audience wants and needs and give it to them – and then promote it. 5. Take Care of Internal Housekeeping One thing that every business has in common is a lack of time to handle the kind of tasks that can easily be put off. I'm talking about things like solidifying and documenting internal processes, working through your email backlog, or taking inventory. If things are slow, this is a good time to tackle your backlog. Set aside some time each day to handle the things that have been put on the back burner. That way, you'll be in good shape to capitalize on the return to normalcy – whenever it happens. 6. Take a Proactive Approach to Marketing In times of crisis, some of us panic. It's understandable – but it's not a great idea, either. Just when we think we've discovered a new normal, things shift under our feet. It can be stressful at best. The important thing during this time is not to panic. Don't make any sudden changes to your marketing strategy. Instead, take a deep breath and look at your analytics and metrics. See what's working and what isn't – and adjust based on what you find. A fact-based approach will always serve you better than reacting in fear. 7. Tackle Your Digital To-Do List There are a lot of little online tasks that ...

In this episode of the Road To Growth podcast, we are pleased to introduce you to John Vuong. John is the fourth child of Vietnamese immigrants to Canada, John is very familiar with hard work. He was born and raised in Hamilton, and worked from a young age to help his family while also having some pocket money to have fun. John has had almost too many jobs to count, starting when he was ten helping out on paper routes. Through all of his work, though, he has focused on a single thing – building relationships. Whether it was collecting money and making sales on his paper route, shelving books at his local library, or manning the fryer at a stadium, he loved meeting new people and getting to know them. He connected by listening to others’ stories and sharing his own. At University in London, Ontario, he studied finance. He quickly learned that living on your own in residence doesn’t mean you can procrastinate and coast – he got 20% below his usual grades on his first exams. He quickly learned to buckle down and work hard to get the results he wanted. One of the defining events of his life was when he was accepted into an exchange student program in his 3rd year of university. He travelled to Lancaster, England for a year and learned a whole new culture and approach. He loved meeting new people, whether students or locals. After graduation, he wanted to continue travelling and was accepted into a program to teach in Japan. However, his brother spoke to him about settling down and handling his finances responsibly, so he chose to get a job in Toronto. His adventure in sales began at Red Pages, a startup that wanted to follow Yellow Pages and create a printed directory, only of websites instead of phone numbers. This was 2003, when Google was in its infancy and everyone was still trying to understand what the internet would be. Yellow Pages was a major player and everyone invested in print ads. John did an excellent job building relationships with local businesses and selling ads for Red Pages, but the product wasn’t used the way Yellow Pages was and the startup did not succeed. John’s next job taught him that building relationships was so important he wasn’t happy if he couldn’t do it every day. He was with an affiliate online marketing company that got customers for big businesses that were paying per acquisition. He found the job very transactional and didn’t stay long. His passion for building relationships was not possible there. The next five years saw John doing outside sales for Yellow Pages and enjoying the connections he made with business owners and coworkers. However, near the end of his time there the company was faltering. Businesses weren’t getting the returns they used to on their ads. Print was declining, and Google was taking over. John wanted to serve his customers more fully, so he started to explore online marketing. The founding of Local SEO Search was an adventure. He got his first customer when he didn’t yet have a laptop – he was showing prospects Google search results on his phone. However, his first six-month contract got the ball rolling and it’s been doing well ever since. His primary passion in his business is to help small business owners succeed. He loves to see his clients grow and see the tangible results of his work every day. Giving small businesses a leg up so they can compete with more established companies is something John enjoys a great deal. Over time, he’s refined what verticals he’s interested in serving and made the processes at Local SEO Search more efficient. He focuses on working hard, being honest, transparent, and good to staff and clients. That’s when the good stuff really happens. John believes in education and continuous learning. That’s why he started his own podcast, Local SEO Today, in 2018. He wanted to provide a tool for business owners and entrepreneurs to help them succeed. Originally, the podcast focused on the expertise of himself and Roger Murphy, Local SEO Search’s Vice President of Sales. But in 2019 he began interviewing other business owners and entrepreneurs and has found a wealth of knowledge to share with his audience. In his personal life, John has a wife and a four year old son who are the center of his world. He loves to watch his son grow, learn, and interact with the world. He works hard during work hours but at a certain time of day the phone goes off and he focuses on his family. They do a lot together: travelling, skiing, swimming and going to live events. Life is short, so embrace it and take on the adventure. You can run a business the way you want and do it well so that you can spend time with family and friends, which is what really matters. Some of the highlights of the show include: Consumer Behavior: Don’t have time or don’t make time to consume content SEO: Search engines now favor longer content not full of keywords Curiosity Gap: Void between what you know and want to know to find answers Teasers and Promos: Curiosity gaps need to be used for good, not evil by building excitement that measures up and pays off Create curiosity gap by following Storybox Formula: Show what audience wants Challenge solutions Show potential outcomes Reinforce results Consume content to provide feedback on curiosity gaps: When it this content too long? Don’t cut content, reorder elements Watch reality TV to recognize tension that keeps the audience's attention Links: Andrew Davis CoSchedule CoSchedule's Blog Quotes by Andrew Davis: “It’s not the fact that they have no time. It’s just that they don’t want to make time to consume your content. “Stop blaming the consumer for having no time or having a short attention span. It’s our job to create content that earns their attention.” “The more stuff you take out of your content to make it shorter, the less consumable it is.” “A curiosity gap is just a void between what you know and what you want to know.”

Books 4:27Marketing Rebellion: The Most Human Company Wins by Mark W. Schaefer – I read this book in Spring 2019, and took copious notes. Mark was the closing keynote at Social Media Marketing World conference in 2019. I recommend that every marketer and every business leader who has a marketing leader reporting to them should read this book. We are in a different marketing environment today than even just a few years ago. Years of marketing experience in business (or academia) and old methods for buying and placing digital advertising, and ways of engaging with customers are causing customers to block ads and/or to seek education and entertainment that is ad-free. If you aren’t already changing your plans currently to align with the new marketing revolution, this book will cause you to re-think what you’ve been doing in your marketing efforts. Podcast Episodes 6:27Book Marketing: Voice Search For Authors With Miral Sattar – The Creative Penn Podcast Joanna Penn, author and podcast host, interviews Miral Sattar about the steps you can take in 2019 to help voice-activated assistants find your book upon request. In this episode, they touch on a variety of subjects from updating meta data on your web pages so that the snippets are answering the questions that people are asking in their attempts to find your books, to the importance of the audiobook format, to the differences between on-screen searches that are typed in a search engine such as Google, to asking a voice-activated assistant for a result. 7:179 Ways That Artificial Intelligence (AI) Will Disrupt Authors and the Publishing Industry You don’t have to be a book author to benefit from this episode of The Creative Penn Podcast. Joanna Penn tracks through a list she has created that indicates we’re on the cusp of disruptions for authors and the publishing industry. Penn runs a multi-six-figure business as an independent author and speaker. She is published in 86 countries. Her energy and enthusiasm about AI is contagious. The insights she shares as she outlines the ways that authors and the publishing industry could be effected can provide ideas for your own business plan for the future. 9:30 Understanding Voice Search and the Future of SEO For interesting insights in to how voice is changing the “search” industry and what we might need to be expecting as businesses of the future, take a listen to this episode of Skill Up podcast. There is also the Google Home Assistant or Microsoft’s Cortana, Apple’s Siri, and others. As people gravitate towards voice for search, it has brought about a marketing niche that is often referred to as voice search marketing. Voice has been referred to as the next big thing. The data is showing that it IS the big thing we need to be preparing for in business and marketing of our products and services. Vickie Maris, host of Agile Digital Business podcast, discusses trends and definitions related to “voice,” in Episode 10 of the show. Season 2 of the podcast is focused on voice and voice first searches, and how businesses can prepare for the platform. This means that, if you sell anything to or market anything to or gather any data on California residents, you’re subject to the CCPA’s provisions and need to be ready.” Kerry O’Shea Gorgone (guest post on the Grow blog by Mark Schaefer) 16:05 Flash Briefing – A Flash Briefing is a term related to Amazon Skills for Alexa-assisted devices. It’s a short (10 minutes or less) news update that Alexa can read or play. 16:25 GDPR – General Data Protection Regulation Enforced May 25, 2018 In statements on the EU GDPR website it says that the GDPR is “designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe and to protect and empower all EU citizens’ data, and reshape the way organizations across the region approach data privacy.” https://eugdpr.org/ 16:57 Intent – The meaning of whatever a user has verbalized to a voice-activated assistant. 17:04 Machine Learning – It’s an offshoot of artificial intelligence. Machine learning makes assumptions that machines can learn from data. As patterns are determined, decisions get made with little or no human involvement. 17:18 Position Zero – The top search result in a screen-based, keyword search in a search engine such as Google. It’s above the ads; it’s above the snippets. It’s the position used in voice search. 17:35Screen Search – A screen search is the type of Internet searching that was previously thought of as traditional. It involves typing of questions, key words or phrases in a search engine such as Google or Bing. A method of typing and a screen are involved. The search results are displayed in multiples per page. 17:58SEM – Search engine marketing 18:02 SEO – Search engine optimization SERP – Search engine results page* 18:05 Skill (Amazon), Action (Google), Capsule (Bixby for Samsung) – Amazon calls these “voice-driven capabilities” that can run on their respective platforms. Google calls these Actions. For Bixby, they are capsules. Consider the Amazon Alexa Skill for an example. I’ve created an Alexa Skill for my podcast, Agile Digital Business, to make it easy for Amazon device users to ask Alexa to play my Flash Briefing for the podcast. The Alexa Skill can be found on search in the Amazon Skill store. If a user knows the name of the Skill they are looking for, they can request it of the assistant by saying, “Enable [name of Skill].” For the podcast, I set the Alexa Skill up with the blue print provided for a Flash Briefing. It saved me from having to code, and it enables a user to search in their Alexa app for the specific Skill to add to their Flash Briefing.* 19:05 Smart Speaker – A smart speaker is also known as a voice-activated assistant, and several other terms. Examples include the Echo by Amazon (assistant is Alexa) or the Home by Google. Sonic Branding – Phrases such as “tone of the copy,” “find your voice,” and “it should sound like our brand,” have a literal meaning in this era of voice search. Sonic branding is what your brand sounds like as it is responding, verbally, to your customers.* 19:22 Utterance – This is the term used to describe the vocalizations a user has with a voice-activated assistant. 19:31 Voice – Any interaction that allows you to control a computer program using natural speech. 19:40 Voice Commerce – Transactions for goods and services conducted via voice search and commands given to the assistant in the smart speaker. Users can connect their accounts such as Amazon. 19:55 Voice First – The phrase, voice first, refers to the first in a string of searches, starting with a voice search, that a user conducts. They may go to a screen search after getting an initial response from an assistant. 20:11 Voice Search – A voice search is a question asked by a person talking to their digital assistant (voice-activated speaker or voice-activated assistant) such as Siri or Alexa. The assistant uses meta data to return one result that best aligns with the question that was asked. 20:46 Voice User Interface (VUI) – This is an interface that allows a person using voice for search to interact with a device when there isn’t a screen involved. 21:00 BIO – Vickie Maris Voice first, voice platforms and preparing content so that it is more discoverable in voice search are topics that have the focus of Vickie Maris, author, speaker, digital marketer and idea coach. So far in this series, I've shared a simple book launch formula, how to get other people to share your work, how to utilize paid promotions, and in this post, I'm tackling how to grow your email list. This WILL have applications outside of book launching! If you're new around here, you may have missed that I'm a little nerdy about email lists. I've got under 10,000 people on my combined three lists (for fiction, nonfiction, and my lifestyle blog). Not huge! But size is NOT the only thing that matters when it comes to your list. The goal should be a group of active, interested, and perhaps even RABID fans. First of all, let's talk about a few email basics. When I say "email list," what I mean is the group of people who have actively signed up to receive emails that you send through an email service provider like ConvertKit, MailerLite, Mailchimp, Mad Mimi, or any other trusted provider. I do NOT mean you sending emails to all your contacts in gmail. HOW TO GROW YOUR EMAIL LIST Growing an email list really breaks down into two main pieces: Content Strategy Traffic Strategy Without great content, no one will want to sign up for your list. Without traffic, no one will know about your great content. These go hand-in-hand. There are also tools and ways to optimize your website for email growth, but I'll tackle that in another post. Note for People Who Hate Email: It's all about your MINDSET. If you're frustrated about email or not really "into" it, you need to reframe the conversation. Consider email your direct connection with your superfans! It's not a chore and it's not THAT complicated. You CAN do it and I hope that if you think of it as connecting with your fans. If you are JUST getting started, check out my FREE EMAIL COURSE! CREATING YOUR CONTENT STRATEGY I'm all about the two parts in this post. There are two parts to your email content strategy that you need to consider. The first is the kind of content that you are creating openly on the internet, whether on a social media platform like Instagram, a blog, a YouTube channel, or even in books you sell on Amazon. The second part of your content strategy is what you'll send people through your email. PUBLIC CONTENT (blog, social media) -> EMAIL SIGNUP -> EMAIL CONTENT To get subscribers, you need to have fabulous content that they can interact with BEFORE they sign up. If you have great blog posts, they may be motivated to sign up to get more. If you have Instagram posts that they just love, they might want to go deeper and get updates via email. You must have some great public-facing content that they can engage with before you ask them to sign up. You also need to have a compelling reason that people want to sign up. No one wants to "sign up for my newsletter." Nope. You need to clearly and specifically let people know WHY they should sign up for your email list. That looks like creating an email content strategy. It doesn't have to be complicated! For my fiction list, I tell people that they'll hear about new books first and get my Weekly Clean Reads email with great book deals. For Create If Writing, you'll get the weekly Quick Fix where I share news, tools, and resources for your authentic-platform building. Do you see how both of those are clear and specific? They may not speak to EVERYONE, but I don't want everyone on my list. I want superfans! A freebie (aka: lead magnet or reader magnet) is another type of content that may get people to sign up. This usually looks like a free book, checklist, form, resource, guide, etc that people will get for signing up for your email list. Freebies can still work really well, but they also need to be specific and targeted to the right people. Read more: How to Create the Perfect Freebie If you are trying to figure out how to grow your content or develop a content strategy, I'd recommend Meera Kothand's book the One Hour Content Plan. It's focused toward blogging, but will be helpful in thinking about a framework for content strategy. GETTING TRAFFIC TO YOUR CONTENT A lot of people stop after working on content. They think the issue is really all about creating a great freebie and having a nice website, perhaps with a snazzy opt-in form or pop-up. Those things are great! But if you have no traffic coming your way, then you won't have any people who see your content to sign up. Ways to get traffic to your website: SEO - Search engine optimization as with Google Social Media - Sharing on Twitter, Facebook, or Pinterest (which is more like search engine traffic) Use email - but this is a chicken and egg problem- you can email people when you have a new blog post, but this doesn't help if you don't an email list Guest posting - not all created equal (check out my post over at Jane Friedman) Ways to get traffic to your email list directly: Ask others to share - in email or in guest post Use paid/free services - My Book Cave, Bookfunnel Use a giveaway - Booksweeps, Kingsumo Opt-in in the back of books You can use a variety of ways to build traffic to your website or even just a landing page for your freebie. A combination is often best, but you could have several different kinds of Read more: How to Get Traffic to Your Site Are you feeling a little better about email? Just a LITTLE? I hope you are!! Remember: you need to think about the kind of content you're going to provide and then get that content in front of people. Yeah...it's a little more complicated in practice. But break it down into those two pieces to start. You can do it! MORE EMAIL RESOURCES AND LINKS Blog Elevated Conference Laura Fuentes is the one I mentioned who got me into email! Search Engine Optimization. This relentless universe of researching, creating, curating, interlinking, auditing, analyzing, re-researching, and so on is at the forefront of every business. While the individual avenues of SEO are talked about in depth, there exists a gap in understanding how to look at SEO holistically and tie it to bigger marketing goals. There are also questions around quality vs quantity and finding a balance between the two – If 10 blog posts and 20 landing pages a month is really THE answer and if a search engine world exists outside of Google. (Yes, we just said that!) Our tete-a-tete with Dan talks about approaching SEO holistically, the biggest source of views on YouTube, and top 3 insights from interviewing close to 100 SEO experts on his podcast. How do you find customers for your social media marketing agency (SMMA)? I bet if you search youtube you will find hundreds of videos of people explaining how they get their clients for digital marketing agencies. But, I feel like there are a few ways that nobody talks about. The reason nobody talks about these is that either they don't know about them, or because they don't want you to know about them. One way is to contact big marketing agencies and ask for their "scraps"! Yes, I know this doesn't sound right but, as you know, the big marketing agency pick and choose who they want to deal with. That is called "hiring your customer" They do this so they can filter the good from the bad, and the bigger budget customers from the smaller. Also, it is important to filter the customers that you feel you cant show results too. Certain clients are way easier to achieve good marketing results, because of the niche they are in, or because of the product or service they are selling is a bit more unique. You should contact a big marketing agency and ask them directly to give you leads to customers they have filtered and will not be performing marketing services on. To be honest, they have no reason to say no! But... you must also filter those clients to make sure you can get results that are visible in the short term. You want the client to refer you to others as being a good marketer, and you also want to prove to yourself that you can actually do it. If you get yourself into a job that is more than you can chew, you can always consider hiring a 3rd party marketing agency to help you out. social media and digital agency pricing (not mine) Tip number #2 Go to your local job website, and try to find companies that are hiring marketing positions If you see business A hiring a digital marketing manager or a director of marketing or positions like that, contact them and offer your services as a 3rd party marketing agency. They have every reason to accept, as they will get the same job done, but for a fraction of the cost, since you will not be working full time on their business, and that allows them to not pay a full year salary to someone Extra: Some of the services you may offer in your SMMA Social media marketing agency or DA Digital Agency Dynamic Website design and development (CMS enabled SEO Search engine optimization Social media management consulting facebook ads management Google AdWords E-Commerce portal development Mobile Application development Digital Marketing Services – SEO, SMO, SEM, PPC, Google Adwords I hope these tips help you get more clients for your digital marketing agency
