There are two ways to embody your workplace culture or behavior: Passive Modeling and Active Modeling. Passive Modeling is when you're setting yourself as an example; this can be conscious and unconscious. Our focus at The Shuler Group is helping organizations achieve and sustain forward motion through people, processes, and performance. As for the people part, it's all about ensuring that an organization has the right people for the right seat. You've probably heard me define it before; the right people are those whose goals, purpose, and values align with the organizations. The right seat is when someone is operating in his/her zone of genius.  Ideally, we work towards having the right people in the right seats. We generally recommend organizations focus on getting the right person first. Because if a person is not aligned with your company's core values, it can cause disruptions to operations and workplace relationships. In any business or professional setting, having difficult conversations is something that a company has to go through. Every business has its problems, and for it to move forward, these problems need to be addressed and discussed.  It’s difficult for people involved in such a discussion not to get defensive, because they’re going to feel confronted. So how do you have these difficult conversations without putting them on the defensive and not making them feel attacked? When you’re about to engage in a difficult conversation, put yourself in a neutral position, be patient, and be intentional about how you convey things. It is best to take your time and make sure you’re calm before proceeding. It’s never a good idea to make any decisions when emotions are high. It’s not about you being right or proving the other person wrong. It’s about collaboratively moving forward, resolving an existing problem, and making everyone involved feel they’re part of the solution. After over a year into this pandemic, one of the things that struck me is our view of what’s normal. In just one year, we’ve grown so accustomed to the safety protocols, social distancing, working from home, and other “new normal” things that it becomes a natural part of us and our daily lives. And the things that we usually did in the “old normal” now feel a bit strange: going on a ski trip, traveling with friends, sitting leisurely in a restaurant over a meal, seeing a person without a mask on at the grocery store, or neglecting COVID safety recommendations feels strange or uncomfortable.  Our sense of what’s normal, our belief in what IS normal, is intriguingly ever-changing, and that’s okay. If you’re in an unconventional or intolerable situation, you either succumb to the despair or make do with what you’re dealt.  As I’ve asked before: what is the cost of that? After all of this, it’s not likely that we can go back to the old normal completely. In truth, things are always evolving, adapting, and changing; there is always a “new normal.”  What’s important is to look forward and ask yourself: What pieces of the old normal do you want to bring back? What pieces are you okay with letting go completely? What are your hopes in “future normal”? Listen in as Dawn discusses the ever-changing faces and phases of normal. As coaches, our goal is to equip teams, leaders, and employees with tools, techniques, and strategies to move the organization forward. We want our tools to be effective and powerful so staff can perform at their best. After all, it is what our company is about, instituting forward motion and helping organizations move in a positive direction.  There are two tools that we use over and over with our clients (and internally here at The Shuler Group).  One of our clients commented that one tool looks back, and one looks forward.  Perfect!   The tool that looks back is what we call The Groundhog Day Exercise; it draws solutions by looking at the past and answering these questions: What worked? What didn’t work? What could we do differently? Sometimes we have to look back to better understand where we are. The other tool, POM, looks ahead. POM stands for Purpose – Outcome – Method. Taking these three things into account in planning your future course will guide you to the best possible route to your goals. Listen in as Dawn discusses these two tools and how they can propel your company forward. Episode 185 – Not offering remote work options is for the dinosaurs

One thing that has been greatly affected by the pandemic is the workplace setup. Most companies have had to tweak operations, and sometimes even to make drastic changes, like going from 100% in-person to 100% remote.  Even as organizations think about phasing back into some version of in-person work, it still makes sense to offer remote and teleworking options for your employees’ and business’s health and security. You can always shuffle a number of your staff to work on-site and remotely, even rotate them if needed. Naturally, these are added efforts for the company, but these are much-needed tradeoffs. It’s a complex balancing act, and compromises are surely necessary, but when executed correctly, you’ll be surprised that employees can be as efficient, if not more so, when they work remotely. In this episode, Dawn talks about the absolute need to be flexible in your workplace operations and the importance of adjusting to the ever-changing situation. One take-away: what is most important is that your employees perform and thrive as well as they can and set them up for success, regardless of their situation. The workforce is one of the greatest resources that an organization can have. So much depends on a company’s employees and staff for it to move forward and uphold its core values. Then there are two other equally important areas: Process and Performance. Strong Processes ensure that roles and responsibilities are clear, and efficient systems are in place. For Performance: are your people working in their Zone of Genius? If their strengths complement their position perfectly, Performance will undoubtedly be high, and output is significantly greater.  These three areas – People, Process, and Performance – are essential to the success of a company. When they’re all working synergistically with each other, that’s when companies thrive. Listen in as Dawn breaks down these three areas in the workplace and gives valuable insight into how it impacts the organization. Good systems and processes are crucial to the success of any organization. They play a significant role in any organization’s success or struggle. One of the common denominators that hurt operations is when there are inconsistencies and inefficiencies in the system or process. After all, keeping all stakeholders happy and satisfied is a delicate balancing act.  To make the most out of it, here are some great questions that we need to ask ourselves: Why do these systems and processes in your organization exist? What is the end goal? What is the desired outcome? At the end of the day, it’s all about the overall experience that your company has to offer.  Listen in as Dawn talks about the push and pulls in systems and processes of organizations and what we can do to attain the most desirable outcome. A couple of years ago, a magazine I enjoyed reading announced they shifted focus, thus, overhauling their content and a lot of their staff. With that, its quality, in my opinion, has gone downhill. This magazine used to have brilliant content with entertaining articles containing helpful and valuable information. Now, the articles aren’t as dynamic and detailed. I find them quite generic, and there’s not much value in them as before. I then realized why I am no longer drawn to it; they are writing to the lowest common denominator.  When information is conveyed with the lowest common denominator, there’s a danger of losing substance… and ultimately losing its target audience. When you’re addressing the lowest common denominator, then you’re leaving out a good portion of the world. When we’re passionate about something, we approach the subject matter with a level of dedication, enthusiasm, and intensity. That amount of attention often translates to good things, especially when your passion aligns with your work or projects. However, there can be a tendency to get lost in our passion. The further we go down the rabbit hole, the more it can cause a disconnect or confusion in communication. Your colleagues, especially those from another department, may not have the same understanding or may not have your perspective toward the matter. This isn’t to discourage you from being passionate about your work or things you love, but to encourage understanding and awareness that we all learn and experience things differently. And the key to seeing the other vantage point is by asking questions and by being empathetic. In Clockwork, Mike Michalowicz compared a company to a beehive. In a beehive, each bee’s job is its primary role plus protecting the queen bee role. Like in a company, aside from what you do in your position, each individual has a major part in protecting and upholding the company’s queen bee role, as well as its core values.  Listen in as Dawn Shuler gives an in-depth discussion of the “queen bee role” and how to align it with your company’s core values.  Other podcast episode referenced: Zone of Genius and The importance of core values The post Episode 179 – What is your queen bee role? first appeared on The Shuler Group LLC.

When we experience a recurring stressful situation that we cannot change or do something about, we tend to normalize that situation and attempt to live with it as we go on. This is a natural coping mechanism to reduce or subdue its stressful effect on us. While normalizing an abnormal or chronically stressful situation can be helpful, it can also be detrimental when mismanaged. It can desensitize us to things that are uncustomary, potentially unhealthy, or socially unacceptable. Having patience and acceptance toward something we cannot change is important to alleviate this unwanted side effect. Much of the work we do in our businesses revolves around communication, particularly when we talk about employee engagement.  Feedback is one of the most effective means to ensure that you have actively engaged employees.  So how do we make sure we’re giving effective and meaningful feedback? Before answering that, what exactly is feedback? Feedback is communicating clearly about a person’s progress, strength, and areas of improvement. With that definition, your feedback should acknowledge their strengths and areas of improvement. Great feedback should be a balanced combination of positive reinforcements and areas that needs work. If the balance is off, it can lead to workplace and employee engagement issues. Have you ever been in a situation where a statement or a comment from someone got to you personally or somewhat irritated you? How do you respond to these circumstances? Most of us automatically retaliate with a level of snark or hostility.  It’s normal and part of our defense mechanism. But for sure, we can teach ourselves to do better in dealing with these situations.  When responding to something that irked you, the worst thing you can do is react when your emotions are heightened. It’s always good to pause for a couple of seconds, compose yourself, and think about who’s the response about? What is its purpose? If you react to make others feel worse, to get satisfaction, and feed your ego, the response is about you. And certainly, these types of responses don’t advance things in a positive direction.  On the other hand, if your response aims to get more information, move things forward, and gain clarity, it’s a noble and honorable purpose. And that’s what an ideal response should be.  Other podcast episodes referenced: Are you purpose driven?, Forward motion, Passionate about forward motion, and Help me see what you see. One of the most rigorous processes a company goes through is recruitment. Regardless of whose perspective, several boxes need to be checked to ensure we get the right person for the position or land the perfect job as applicants. Recruiting and qualifications go beyond what’s in the resume. Yes, credentials and skills are essential, but often overlooked are the intangibles. Character, inquisitiveness, and enthusiasm are equally important qualities that need to be carefully considered. A lot of these qualities are not measured or conveyed in a resume. A person showing genuine eagerness, curiosity, and confidence toward the ins and outs of operations has as good of a chance to flourish, if not better than a person who has good credentials but is a little indifferent towards the position. Credentials make you better qualified for a position, but good character makes you a better fit. There are four areas of competence: the Zone of Incompetence, Competence, Excellence, and Genius. A brief description of each: the Zone of Incompetence includes areas you’re not good at doing. Zone of Competence are the things that you can do, but you’re inefficient at it. Zone of Excellence are areas you’re very good at, but there’s little desire in doing it. Lastly, the Zone of Genius comprises areas where you excel, but the difference is you have the passion and enthusiasm to do the things you excel in. Identifying and having a better understanding of these areas of competence has valuable applications in and outside work. As much as possible, you want to delegate or outsource the things outside your skillset, and ideally, you want to work within your Zone of Genius. One of the cornerstones of the success of any organization or business is the people behind it. And one of the most reliable ways to guarantee productivity and growth is keeping employee engagement up. A handful of research and statistics show that actively engaged employees perform much better, more likely to go the extra mile, and less likely to take paid time off, or even leave the company when they’re engaged in their work. Disengaged employees often only do what’s in the job description and usually do not show initiative to better their performance. So, employee engagement is crucial to the morale and productivity of any business. In organizations/companies, training is something that we go through regularly. Be it for operations or human resources, held by the company you’re working on or an external firm, we all experience training in one form or another. Management training, diversity and inclusion training, compliance training may seem superfluous, but we shouldn’t take these for granted. Often these are treated just like checking a box; we only go through it because it’s required, and then set it aside after and get on with our day. However, there is a reason why such training exists, and there are valuable things to pick up from it. If you’re attending training, either virtually or in person, an important thing you can do is to figure out the “Deeper Why” and ask yourself these questions, “How can I integrate what I’ve learned into practice?” and “How can I implement these to my daily work-life?”  Listen in as Dawn Shuler shares the importance of training and why we need to pay a bit more attention to it.
