The Monster Manual describes Displacer Beasts as a “monstrous predator that takes its name from its ability to displace light so that it appears to be several feet away from its actual location. A displacer beast resembles a sleek great cat covered in blue-black fur. The beast's eyes glow with an awful malevolence that persists even in death.” We are joined by Neal Powell. This is the twelfth episode of Twitch Tales, an interactive D&D 5e series run by me on my Twitch channel (www.twitch.tv/roberthartleygm), centered around one character called Apis Hive. Their actions are hive mind controlled by the chat, via polls and giveaways. Apis is a 53yo, non-binary, Hill Dwarf Ranger, Outlander and a Horizon Walker Fighter. They are cunning, resourceful and introverted, avoid trouble where they can and will always help those in need; only killing when necessary. They will always do what they can to protect an animal in danger. Apis can be indecisive, inconsistent and slow to trust. Today we talk about Displacer Beasts, an OG D&D enemy with a surprising origin story that directly ties it to a beloved Final Fantasy Monster and the Alien Xenomorph. Then we talk about the Alien Big Cats, which are disappointingly not literal aliens but just big cats where there shouldn't be big cats. Is the UK home to an escaped population of black panthers? A relict group of cave lions? Magical Ghost Cats? Or is monkey brain just big afraid of cat? Hollywood circles around to the fantasy adventure film, this time dressing it up up as a D&D film set in the Forgotten Realms fantasy world. Paul knows all about this as he used to play D&D back in the day. Wayne claims he played it only twice - even if it was a lot more than that - and remembers little to nothing about such adventures. So who is going to enjoy this film and who is going to be middling to okay with it? And just how high is Chris Pine's charisma score? In this episode of 8-bit Monsters' Monster Deconstruction for D&D 5e we look at the iconic Displacer Beast & the Reduced Threat version from Tales from the Yawning Portal. With only two traits to work off of and a simple multiattack. It's good we look at both versions of this monster since the Displacer Beast is a quick run down and has a very standard array for it's DCR & OCR. So come join us as we take a look at this elusive, angry cat and see how it deconstructs. New Episodes every 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd of the month! The idea of this podcast is to break monsters down into their bare components: DCR & OCR. These two values will allow us to see how strong they are and to see where D&D got the CR values from. I'm doing this because all too often, players skip right to level 3 to avoid the hell levels and possibly end up dead. Generally, each monster is a balancing act that isn't equal to the final value. If you like what you hear and want to see this process in a visual medium. Then come stop by my YouTube channel (Andrew Fillhart) and watch the magic in action. Maybe just a grade school science experiment.
