Before I begin, I notice that Chancellor Jarnathan is not present...?I'm back from an extended break, deciding to do an episode on Dungeons & Dragons, and its fifty-year history and legacy as the most popular TTRPG in the world. Easing myself back into podcasting slowly, then, because it's safe to say nothing has impacted geek culture like Dungeons & Dragons, since its debut in 1974. It evolved from its early iterations to mainstream popularity, especially with the rise of its fifth edition. It wasn't without its controversies, though. Its associations with the 'Satanic Panic' significantly affected its public perception in the 1980s, and led to Evangelical Christian groups linking it with suicides. This isn't the first time Dungeons & Dragons has been adapted to the screen either, with the popular 1983-1985 animated series, and the not-so-popular movie in 2000, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves started its earliest conception in 2013, and had plenty of delays along the way.Despite ongoing rights issues and a global pandemic, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves remarkably manages to honour D&D's legacy and lore, while ensuring authenticity for fans, and accessibility for non-fans and casual moviegoers alike. Despite its critical success, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves faced challenges at the box office, mostly due to some Italian plumbers, but also a fan backlash against owners Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast. This movie deserves to find an audience, and hopefully it will, once Jarnathan arrives... Interested in finding out more about D&D or listening to others' campaigns? This week, as Gladiator II hits the theaters to repeat the same beats of its predecessor and prove that what we do in life truly does echo in eternity, we circle back to the original to cross a movie off of Hayley's list and get her hyped to see some hunks on the IMAX screen. It's 2000's Gladiator, directed by Ridley Scott, and starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Richard Harris, Derek Jacobi, Djimon Hounsou, Tommy Flanagan and Spencer Treat Clark. A somewhat controversial Best Picture winner at the time, it has remained one of Scott's most celebrated pictures despite hardly being his best. While it may not match the heights of his sci-fi output, it is unquestionably the high-water mark of his Medieval Mode, very much in line with subsequent efforts like Kingdom of Heaven, Robin Hood and The Last Duel, and is still a hugely entertaining sword-and-sandal revenge epic that lifted its two lead actors to another level of stardom. Plus: We get pissed off about the Coca-Cola AI Christmas commercial. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, Gladiator is currently streaming (in Canada at least) on both Netflix and Paramount+ at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include Past Lives, Stop Making Sense, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Alien, Blade Runner, Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, Aliens, In Cold Water: The Shelter Bay Mystery, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, The X-Files (S5E04 "Detour"), Good Bones, Super Mario Party Jamboree, The Holdovers, The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Red One, The Brave Little Toaster, Traffic, Erin Brockovich, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Shadow of the Vampire and Crash, among others. We'll be back next week to wrap up No-Theme-ber with our monthly canon consideration, as Hayley's got the keys to the vault this month and is using them to induct the Coen Brothers' 2007 crime classic No Country For Old Men, which is currently streaming north of the border on both Netflix and Amazon Prime. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Editor - Dan Lebental ACE BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F editor Dan Lebental not only took on the daunting task of bringing back a beloved character that audiences haven't seen in thirty years, but he did it with one hand. The other was working simultaneously on another Bruckheimer blockbuster, BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE. With the help of his long-time assistant, Dawn Michelle King, and his trusty "embedded sound design" workflow, Dan was able to pull off making both films in fine style. BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F sees the titular hero return to Beverly Hills to aid his adult daughter after her life is threated when she gets too close to a crime ring being investigated by Axel's old friend, Billy Rosewood. DAN LEBENTAL Editor Dan Lebental ACE seems to be the man to call when it's time for big laughs and big action. Aside from the many films Dan has done in the MCU, including IRON MAN, IRON MAN 2, ANT MAN, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME, and SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, Dan's work can also be found in ELF, BAD BOYS FOR LIFE, BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE and DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES. Editing BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F In our discussion with BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F editor Dan Lebental, we talk about: When an editor works both sides of the street Nailing the nostalgia notes Doing a deeper dive on embedded sound design Taking a logical look at the script Defining the 80's style of filmmaking The Credits Visit Extreme Music for all your production audio needs See the latest new features in Avid Media Composer Hear Dan talk about his work on; SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME, ELF, BAD BOYS FOR LIFE and DUNGEONS & DRAGONS. Normally, when you hear "A tradition unlike any other", you think The Masters, as that's the slogan. However, it is a slogan that more closely describes THE DEUCIE AWARDS!! For the 11th time, Dave and Mikey, now joined by #XLessDrEarl, preside over the "people's movie awards"... and the top 10 of the year as well! And to assist, the Deucecast crew invites in many friends of the show, from Burgess to Kaufman to Aussie to the Ryfuns and even more -- with an assist from The Main Street Electrical Podcast co-host Jenn Novotny, it's quite an award-fest! In addition, Dave, Mikey, and Dr Earl give their own fave films of the year -- you can likely guess the films that make all three lists, but there are a few out of left field as well. Make sure to catch Ep 621 from a few weeks ago, where we do our "just outside the top ten" list... Make sure to follow along with the winners! The Academy Awards are finally completed, which means the Awards Season has but one stop... the Deucie Awards. And to give out the awards, you need the nominations... so tonight, two special guests and Friends of the Show step up to reveal all that you have been wishing for (and you'll find below) First, though, Mikey, d$, and #XLessDrEarl discuss a little Oscar recap -- what was snubbed, the surprises, the chalk of it all, the good parts and the bad. Then, they take a look at their fave films of the year, and while all of their Top 10s are coming up in a few weeks, along with the actual Deucie Awards, they look just outside the Top 10, at numbers 11 through 15 on their lists. What just missed out on Mikey's Top 10, sitting in that next 5? What made d$'s 11 to 15, that may have made in the other guys top 10s? And what movies are crossovers, appearing on everyone's lists? And then finally... the nominations are out... WOMEN DELIVERY PEOPLE? NO F-ING WAY. Judy and Linda continue ranting about episodes 3-6 of "Strong Girl Nam Soon" (힘쎈여자 강남순), the JTBC drama, starring Lee YooMi, Ong SeongWoo, and Kim JungEun. I struggled so hard with the headline for this episode. Here are the other candidates: WE'RE CALLING HIM "LIVER TRANSPLANT" FROM NOW ON. HIS NAME IS BREAD SONG?!?!? WHERE'S THE CUTE? YOU GOT A BOYBANDER. WOW, SO MANY WHITE PEOPLE. Digressions: 1:30 - "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" was great, but sadly didn't get enough attention. Check it out on Netflix for a fun, easy watch! 2:36 - Judy didn't realize that she would get so into "Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators", but the documentary series does a great job of giving the cast the spotlight they deserve. 5:01 - "Renfield" is a weird gory movie about Dracula's put upon familiar. Nicolas Cage is his wacky self and Nicholas Hoult is great, as usual. Some Korean terms: 간이식: [gan-ee-sik] liver transplant; sounds like 강희식 [gang-hee-sik]. 빵: [ppang] bread. 군소: [goon-so] sea hare. Welcome to another first for the APNC crew. First off, there's 5 of us for the first time in a long time! Second, this is the first ever D&D game played on the show. First, though, the gang sits down and talks about the new film, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves! Much like the overall critical reviews, the group really enjoyed the film and it's a marked improvement over the last D&D film debacle. After the review, the game gets rolling. This is a first or second game for the majority of the group, so do not expect Critical Role here. That said, this is a great way to see how the game is played and some of the trials and tribulations that newcomers would experience. Will our team be victorious on our little quest or will we fail? It's up to the dice!! As always, thank you for watching. This one was a new and different kind of fun so we hope you enjoy watching us learn and fumble. Head down to the closet under the stairs and reach for the bottom of the pile of board games for the classics! Since May is officially Star Wars season, we focus on some of the great, classic Star Wars games that we have loved to play over the years. Jay and Shua try to get the highest spin as they channel the Force on Enjoy Stuff! After Jay's review of Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, tune in for a history of board games and a look at some of the greatest classic Star Wars games. News Dark Horse Comics and Mattel are releasing a very cool Masters of the Universe art book Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves gets a digital release with bonus features Beetlejuice 2 is officially announced NASA found the juice to keep Voyager 2 going for 3 more years! Kit Kat cereal is here! Gimme a break! Have you checked out the Gran Turismo trailer? The Big Goodbye: Chinatown and the Last Years of Hollywood by Sam Wasson tells some stories about one of the most classic eras of Hollywood and the drama around it. Shua is deep into season 2 of the Netflix series Shadow and Bone. He describes it as a ‘fantasy steam-punk', which has a very unique feel. Enjoy Games! Board games have been around way longer than you realize. But are some of those historic games still being played? First we look back at some of the oldest games in human history that are still being played today. Dice has definitely been around the longest, dating all the way back to prehistoric times. But if you want something with an actual board, that would be the Royal Game of Ur, which has been played since 2650 BCE! Backgammon may no longer hold the title of oldest, but it sure has been around for a long time. There's even an annual, world-wide game award from Germany, called the Spiel des Jahres. One game a year has been picked as the best since 1978. There's some great games that we grew up with that may not make it on the Spiel des Jahres list, but they were fun nevertheless. Classic, mainstream games like Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Mousetrap, Yahtzee, and more start our board game discussion with some nostalgia. But it's Star Wars month, so we pick some of the Star Wars favorites from the last 46 years. From the original Escape From Death Star game to the heyday of Revenge of the Sith products, these classic games give us so many varieties of game play. Listen in to see if your favorites made the list. Which board games do you Enjoy playing? What Star Wars games would you add to the list? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Fair and square” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. As always, stick around to the end of the episode to hear about our modern obsession. This week, we talked about our joint obsesson: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Join us this week as we travel to Baldur's Gate, conquer the fat dragon, and tackle a dungeon or two, all while discussing the brand new fantasy-comedy blockbuster ‘Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves'. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a 2023 fantasy heist action comedy film directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Gilio from a story by Chris McKay and Gilio. Based on the tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, it is set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting and has no connections to the film trilogy released between 2000 and 2012. The film stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. We Watched A Thing is supported by Dendy Cinemas Canberra. It's spring break, so Christy's off skiing with her family, but that doesn't mean we're taking a vacation from offering you goodies here at Breakfast All Day. She and Alonso review the action comedy "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," which is surprisingly fun (and you don't need to play D&D to enjoy it). Also: heavy spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4." You've been warned! And for our latest round of Was It Great or Were You 8, Alonso has chosen the 1975 Inspector Clouseau comedy "The Return of the Pink Panther" to determine whether it truly was great, or he just loves it nostalgically. We'll return Tuesday to catch up on news and review "Air." Hope to see you then!
Are you ready to experience an actual play GateCrashers episode? We sure hope you are because we are finally covering Dungeons & Dragons! In part one of our Dungeons & Dragons special, Patrick and Dan talk about Dungeons & Dragons history. They talk about the roots of the TTRPG phenomenon and its current cultural impact such as its HUGE presence in Stranger Things plus its own film out in theaters this Friday! Patrick and Dan talk about where they got into the series and what they like or don't like about Dungeons & Dragons. Dan gives his thoughts on the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and how much you need to know about D&D to enjoy it. (Which is nothing, go see it.) We explain what you will need to play Dungeons & Dragons but we also suggest a few other tabletop role-playing games that you may want to check out as well! D&D isn't for everyone and that is okay but there are lots of other options out there. In Part 2 of the episode, Patrick runs a GateCrashers canon one-shot! After the events of GateSlashers 2, Dan and the Grave Robber were thrown into the multiverse. After a long time of slipping between multiverses, some of which you get glimpses of here today, Dan has finally found a way to stay in one for enough time to make a stand. In order to do that, he has summoned Amanda, Ashley, Ethan, and Jake to help him in his fight. That's right, everyone is playing as themselves but fantasy-fied versions. Everyone is a bit different except Ethan who is still Welsh. No amount of magic and multiverse jumping could change that. But with the gang reunited, do they have enough power to stop the Grave Robber and the Necronomicon once and for all?
Amanda, Rich, Daryl, and Glendon talk about the Long Run in games: where the longer run time has enhanced the experience. Media: Code Vein (PS5), The Last Spell (PC), Octopath Traveller 2 (Switch), Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. To contact us, email call@gamerswithjobs.com!
