Episode 144 Streamed Live Tuesday June 20, 2023 Main Topic: Monster Mash #14 - Slimes, Oozes, etc. Over the various editions of Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) there have been a few standard monsters in this category. They are generally amorphous, unintelligent, slow moving and are more like hazards than creatures. What makes them creatures is they grow, likely reproduce, and “attack” by some form of acid. In essence, they try to break down their victims and absorb them. These creatures have not organization or culture. Those attacked are done so opportunistically, not from any type of desire or motivation. Something lands on or near them and they attempt to digest it. The standard creatures are: Black Pudding, Gray Ooze, Green Slime, Ochre Jelly, Yellow Mold, and the Gelatinous Cube. The gelatinous cube is a little different from the others as they use pseudopods to attack and can actively move to a target. Later, Violet Fungi, Shriekers, and Gas Spores were added to this category as “fungus creatures”. These are a bit more complex, but still unintelligent. We discuss: 1) Their differences over the editions 2) Memorable encounters 3) Alternate takes or uses in encountersRandom Geek-itude: Report from Big Geek Land Big Geek Con: September 22-23, 2023Four Seasons Hotel in Saginaw, MI. – be there or be square! When I was a young youth there was a show on Nickelodeon called Double Dare. It appeared to be enjoyable and it seemed as though every contestant won a Garfield Phone or a 10-speed BMX bike in the final round. NO one ever won the prize to Universal Studios. Why? Station 5 was the slide that looked like a giant tounge and somewhere in the landing pit was a red flag tucked behind or in a big mound of slime. And much like our young millenial contestants, our older millenial DnD players appear to be in such a pickle. We are also surrounded and quickly loosing time to a Gelatinous Cube. Two to be exact. Will our intrepid heroes bust through to saftey, or will they pick up their peverbial calico phones for a ride home. Listen in to episode 17 of Dungeonetics to find out! Thanks again, as always, for Kellen for our slamming introand Virus of Ideals for the beautiful exit music. All are available on Bandcamp, Youtube, and Spotify. Also please check out freesounds.org for a calvacade of euphony to battle the cacophonous existence of daily life. PSA- CDC Flu
Through the first of the curtained doors, Kale, Uri and Javier found themselves fighting two Sabre-Toothed Tiger like creatures, as well as a giant python! The snake had the upper hand, constricting around Kale, leaving Uri and Javier to fend off the tigers. To avoid being eaten by a giant python, Kale transmutated himself into a Gelatinous Cube, which didn't quite go as expected. After defeating all the creatures and sustaining heavy damage, another curtained-door awaits. Like what you hear? It's slime time! Join us as we discuss slimes from the delicious sounding but terrible tasting black pudding to the equally foul tasting ochre jelly and the Gelatinous Cube, the cube that eats you!(TM).
Rachelle, Ethan, and Christian fail their Sense and Perception checks and fall headlong into our favorite oozes, discovering that, in or out, never touch the pudding in a dungeon! We covered a fair amount of ground and cleaned it of all the moss we could and really dug into the nooks and crannies. This one gets slimy folks, so strap in for Oozes and Friends with our star: Gelatinous Cube! When the devil drives he never pays for tolls! He also puts his bare feet up on the dash like a damned caveman, but that's neither here nor there. From a 1910 issue of Men's Railroad Magazine comes When the Devil Drives, the tale of a desperate father and his son riding the rails to greener pastures. With the devil, so it sounds like fun and they're going to stop for a lot of commemorative spoons. Check it out! We're back with Gelatinous Cube 19. Our prompt this week, provided by the very lovely and talented Kyle Latino of Map Crow, provides the inspiration for a wide-ranging discussion of cartographical errors, problems, and opportunities. How does a map structure and ground the world of an rpg, and what might happen if the map proves false?
It's fighting time on Gelatinous Cube as we tackle a multifaceted boss inspired by the big bads of JRPG's. Lots of ideas in play this week but they boil down to a simple core: how do we create interesting monsters? Huge thanks to: Jojiro of https://dungeonantology.com/ and Vance A of https://leicestersramble.blogspot.com/ for all their excellent thoughts :)

Adam's brought a lethal encounter to the table this week, and we discuss character death in RPG's. We cover TPK's, liminality, and offer a defense of death rolls. Works cited this week include the luminous ponderings of Emmy Allen, and the firecracker of a game that is Brindlewood Bay.
This week we dig into Rosie's encounter "This Damsel is in Distress!" We consider the status of women as victims in ttrpg's, and how we can make them as colourful as the villains they face. You can find Rosie's Princess Stress Response tables, along with the Gelatinous Cube's thoughts on the prompt, right here: https://tinyurl.com/yc24cped
In this episode we debate pet merits of the iconic Gelatinous Cube. Can you push one through a ramen strainer? What happens if they get out into the open steppe? What's with D&D's weird approach to electricity? Is it bouncy or not?Is it a glorified bumper car, or just a dungeon roomba? Is it a delicacy when cooked? What happens if you feed one jelly(jello) crystals, toilet candies or pine scented floor cleaner?
Adam and Rosie are back for a discussion of the pitfalls and potentials of living dungeons. We tour beastly bellies, disturb micro-ecologies, and welcome the grotesque. Watch where you step dear listener, it's extremely squelchy in the dungeon this week.
It's ghost stories for Candlemass this week on Gelatinous Cube, as we tackle Rosie's séance encounter The Spirits are Restless! We discuss Pre-Raphaelite ghosts and the artists who loved them, the magic of props and lighting, and a disaster at Castle Ravenloft. SHOWNOTES: Our podcast host has changed things up and no longer embeds shownotes! Catastrophe! But you can find the encounters at gelatinouscast.blogspot.com

Monster: The Gelatinous Cube (Athcoid) Statement by Falel Liander This episode is a fun recreation of the time one of my players had to have the spell Reincarnate cast on them, and they were not happy with the d100 results! Starring: Kez'Var Gildair - Shawn McCarter Kaedwynn Law - Dylan McClosky Writer / Director / Editor: Shawn Mccarter This is the 15th episode in my passion project - Monsters of Fantasy. This podcast will explore the creepy and dark side of Dungeons and Dragons. I've been playing and DMing tabletop games for the past 5 years and have always liked to hype up the horror parts of my campaigns. So I'll be picking Monsters from the Monster Manual, and the DnD universe, to write stories about their abilities and show why they deserve the title "Monster". Join Kez'Var as the first Bard to record an entire catalog of Monsters! But beware, while Fairies, Dragons, and Ghost do exist in this world. Rosie and Adam discuss Rosie's mushroom trap, and the importance of shrooms to fantasy and folklore. We ask why mushrooms are so alluring (clue: drugs), what makes a trap a trap, ponder mycophobia and consider how worlds emerge from small player actions. Oh, and there are goblins. There are always goblins. Then it's over to the Gelatinous Cube for a Weird woodland trance party encounter. Rosie and Ad discuss why the weird is privileged over the uncanny in RPG creation, horror in the familiar, and motivating players through moral appeals. They get into the virtues of over preparation and what do if your players sidestep an encounter than you've spent an age crafting. All that and a disturbing dinner party courtesy of the Gelatinous Cube. Setting up as a trio for a rip-roaring, career-spanning set in the KEXP Gathering Space, Thee Oh Sees burn with so much scrappy energy you can practically hear the mosh pit before it begins.
