Welcome back to How to Be a Better DM, the official podcast of Monsters.RentWe have an awesome podcast today for you. We were able to sit down and chat with Andrew Ashby, owner of We Geek Together. We Geek Together is a store focused on Tabletop Gaming but themed after a tavern, and it's located in Provo Utah. Last April, Andrew hosted the Dead Wars, which was a 1000+ Player D&D game that broke a world record. Today we talk a lot about Dead Wars but also about some important tips for DMs of all experience levels. Below are a list of questions we had prepared for Andrew, but the conversation was so much better than these questions.Andrew also started his own podcast as well which you can find on his website.Show Notes: Warm up question: what have you been geeking out about recently?Section 1: Dead WarsSummary- Talking about orchestrating Dead WarsQuestions:Where did the idea first begin for you to beat the world record? What was the session prep like? What were the biggest hurdles you had to overcome and how did you get past them? How was finding players and DMs for the event similar to finding players for a normal game? Different?Would you recommend this style of group D&D play to DMs wanting to get a big group together? What tips would you give to any DM who wants to put on a multiple group session or event?Section 2: Running the TavernSummary - Talking about setting up a D&D business that is very welcoming of DMsQuestions:What made you want to start this kind of business? How did you test and prove your business idea? What specific goals or values are the focus of WGT?What would you say is the best part of WGT for DMs, specifically? How did you figure out what to put in the tavern?Section 3: Patterns of the Most Successful DMsSummary - talking about what sets the best DM's apartQuestions:What positive patterns do you see in the groups that play the most often? How do your regular DMs do effective session prep? And how do they create immersion? What sorts of tools or equipment do your regular DMs use? What are the most noticeable differences between an engaged table of players, and one that is stalled?Mentioned in this episode:Join the Guild! To join a community of dungeon masters go to monsters.rent/guild and sign up for free today!
Martyns place on this weeks pod was taken by Welsh Twitter legend Ed Jenks . The boys enjoy discussing the weather (Obviously!), moany South Africans, Scarlets pre-season, expectations for the season, the facilities of Nice, developing young players, why Scarlets fans are the best, why we need a drum at PYS and then predictions for the season, this Saturday, the rest of the Quarter finals and the winner of RWC 2023. You wouldn't expect Ed t hold back and he doesn't disappoint - get yourself some space, make sure the kids aren't listening (there is a bit of swearing) and enjoy this one - then tell your mates. A frustrating start to pre-season - but it is only pre-season! The Dragons game now takes on a little bit of importance with the key question being - will the Dragons take their kicks at goal? Martyn seems to think that the 'edge' between the Scarlets and Dragons has softened since the New Years game but Lee isn't convinced! The boys also discuss hats, the World Cup, Wales v Georgia and the East/West of West Wales - again! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
With a potential win in what will be his 100th game as Georgia Bulldog's head coach, Kirby Smart can cement his legacy as the best to ever do it in the first 100 games of his coaching career. This time in Georgia football lore is truly rarified air. Speaking of the fantastical, it seems only fitting that our Dawgs could spark such a history book type victory against a team quite familiar with fire, ash, & dragons too. The Blazers from UAB searched high and low through the prospective coaching annals to unearth a proven warrior and Super Bowl winning QB, Trent Dilfer. Which leads us to ask: what would a dynasty really be if it couldn't over take the "Brother of Dragons' himself ?! In High Valyrian fashion -- Coach Kirby's only one command before our Dawgs take the field? Dracarys ! Thank you all for listening. Thanks for sharing. && thank you for all of your 5 star reviews, they mean so much. Have a great weekend & as always yall, GO DAWGS !

The entire tribe sat around the feast. They'd managed to down a mammoth and this was cause for celebration. The shaman claims the downing of the beast coincides with the yearly Midwinter celebration Hogash. All the children have been making gifts for each other and the adults have been creating altars for their ancestors. Now the tribe is sat all around the fire pit, feasting on delicious meat. Ulv stands up. The entire tribe hushes and the shaman waves for Ulv to speak. “I wish to attempt the trials. I will lead this tribe.”Suddenly the men of the tribe start beating the ground with their weapons and chanting. The shaman stands up. “Dnuk has accepted the call to the trial. Truly this is a celebration!”We being the preparations at dawn!”IntroWarrick's Problem.Main Topic: Tips on How to Make D&D Christmas ThemedJustinAdd in a Random Celebration in the setting where your players are. This will give the feeling of the holidays even if the celebration is set in the middle of a desert.Change the “skins” of NPC'sYour players don't actually have to fight Santa Clause. They could fight a giant that looks like Santa Clause but has all the same stats as a giant. D&D is half narrative and half mechanics. Instead of homebrewing your own Santa, just take the mechanics of something else and say it looks like Santa.Give your Players a GiftEvery player loves getting new loot. Have a random patron show up and gift the adventurers some sort of interesting item. If you don't want to break your game have them give some sort of consumable item that is interesting. If you don't know what sort of consumable, just choose the form (potion, food or other time) and then pick your favorite ability and give it a one-time use.Change the weather. For most people, Christmas is synonymous with winter. Make it obvious that the weather is changing. Make it snow and give them consequences for the snow. Either have someone open up their home during a snowstorm (spread Christmas cheer) or have the characters have to avoid getting stuck in a blizzard. Go all out with Christmas Homebrew MonstersYou can subscribe to people like GamingBrew from Episode 63. He for example has loads of themed monsters that are custom created for the right feeling and setting. Are you a Dungeons & Dragons fan or just curious what all the hype is about? First published in 1974, Dungeons and Dragons has gained millions of fans over the years. There is one player in particular who is running the same game for 40 years now, breaking the record for the longest continuous Dungeons and Dragons game, ever! The world of Dungeons & Dragons has hundreds, even thousands of monsters for a Dungeon Master to choose from. But, we can often find ourselves using some of the same monsters on a regular basis. A goblin, kobold, and orcs to name a few. But there are so many more interesting monsters to flesh out your adventures and stories with. We polled our audience and discovered what are some of the most underused monsters in D&D. This is a continuation of a previous blog and youtube video. Not only will we discuss some of these monsters, but we will also delve into the myriad of different ways you can get the most out of them in your D&D game.

In today's episode we talk about a fun, easy and system agnostic exercise you can play with your gaming group. Heavily inspired by the structure of the French Canadian "Ligue Nationale d'Improvisation" improv this simple yet elegant game can provide you a fun alternative to playing #DnD on Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds. It requires little to no preparation and also giving everyone a framework to practice their roleplay and improv. As always, this is the deep dive, where Chris and I take a more unscripted approach. In the episode we talk about: - New virtual layout (And this was our first time filming the entire episode in one take!) - The exercise's structure. - Benefits of this "scene" format. - Things to look out for. - Variants. - Optional rules. - Some questions. - Takeaway Role Play Chat is a YouTube channel where your hosts Chris and Mat sit down and chat about #ttrpg (such as #DungeonsandDragons, Fates, Warhammer or Call of Cthulhu) and other RPG related topics. Hey Dungeon Masters, I'm checking in with a quick DM Tips video about being transparent with your table about how you make decisions and adjudicate situations in your D&D or other RPG game. It's never a bad idea to let your players know how situations will play out mechanically-- not what will happen-- but what sorts of results are in play and how those results will be calculated. An educated party is the most capable of making informed decisions and less likely to be aggravated by outcomes that they understand. If you don't do this already, give it a try!Like What I Do? In this Episode we discuss putting a large multi-table a 5th Editon Dungeons and Dragons game at a local con. We talk about how the idea came to Jolene. How she got into trouble by mentioning her idea about a large multi-table game to Saul. And how Jolene was recruited by Saul and his brother Felipe to wrangle a rag tag group of 3 GM's into battle. Saul and Jolene discuss how that idea morphed into a totally different game than she had invisioned. The good, the bad and the ugly of putting on such an event at a gaming convention. How hard and rewarding doing an event like this can be. And how Jolene broke a new GM, Steve, who vowed never to run a game con game again.
