Rob interviews Rick Heinz, author of The Seventh Age Series of books! You can order Rick's books with this Amazon link: https://amzn.to/3x8gjhK ABOUT DYSTOPIA (SEVENTH AGE) When magic has returned to the world, companies start selling it—to those who can afford it and survive it. Magic has exploded back into the world—vampires, demons, ghosts, and other creatures of legend crawled out of the shadows, finally escaping their prisons—and the power previously only in the hands of secretive societies like Skull & Bones and the fascist Thule Society has been laid bare for the entire world to see. After the initial shock, businesses did the expected: found a way to turn magic into profit. The occult “gold rush” at the forefront of magically imbued politics built a world of wealth inequality, greed, and innovation. Bartender Jane Auburn was an early adopter of a new drug sponsored by Pelican Pharmaceuticals that allows her to move at the speed of vampires and match the strength of demons. Soon, she discovers the price for such powers may be more than she can pay: her life. Thrust into the front lines of toxic magic and occult corporate warfare, she will need to uncover what other skeletons these new companies are hiding. Preferably before she clocks out from an overdose or has to bite her tongue and endure her mandated corporate exploitation! At least she was not the only one in Austin, Texas to sign up for magic in a pill. After all, as it says in all their commercials, “Pelican Pharmaceuticals: they keep you going even when you're dead!” And how bad can the side effects possibly be? ABOUT RICK HEINZ   Richard Heinz' is an electrician with a deep interest in politics, symbology, and― not to mention countless caffeine-driven hours spent playing Diablo. The Seventh Age: Dawn is Rick's first book, as well as book one in the sprawling urban fantasy epic, The Seventh Age Series. When he isn't navigating the labyrinthine corridors of his own imagination, Rick works as a project manager in Chicago. You can follow Rick on Twitter @CrankyBolt or go Seventh-Age.com to uncover more about the world of The Seventh Age. Or read random geek articles from him @GeekandSundry! A candlelight flickers in the darkness of the barren room. It's pale gold reflected in the eyes of a young Aasimar woman. Stains of tear drops dapple on the bed linens as she holds tight to her stomach, swollen with the early signs of pregnancy. The flame licks at the wick as an occasional spark drifts upwards towards the coarse hewn timber beams of the structure. Slut and harlot, they called her - even her own Father, even her Delek, the one who had promised a lifetime together yet had run off at the first mention of a child. A wash of change floods over the face of the woman as she wipes her eyes for a final time - this would be the last time that she sheds a tear. Rising to her feat she moves to the worn and splintered wardrobe and pulls out a threadbare cloak and a few other odds and ends - stuffing them into a haversack and heading out into the dark hallway. Passing the shrine to Desna, she pauses to gaze into the hundreds of finely carved butterfly wings and speckled stars that reflect the brazier's flicker of light. Her hand reaches out, almost of it's own accord, to caress the fine wooden details before grasping the carving and yanking with all her might. The wooden effigy clamors to the ground just as her booted foot tips over the brazier - dumping the embers, coals, and flame onto the carving. Flame beings to lick and catch. Tapestries are pulled from their anchors in on the wall and tossed onto the ever growing pyre only adding to the fire's fuel. The last thing she sees before she bars the front doors, is her father desperately trying to smother the flame and cinder. Orange and red light dance and silhouette her as she rides away. No tears fall from her golden eyes. WHAT DO YOU DO? THE CHOICES ARE YOURS.

Whatever your reason for traveling to Sandpoint has brought you here on a fortuitous day, for it is the day of the long anticipated Swallowtail Festival! Now, though, the new cathedral is finally complete - All that remains is to renew the site's blessings from the gods and the folk of the small town can put the recent unpleasantness behind them. Merchant tents hawking wares of everything from food and clothes to local crafts and souvenirs line the square in front of the new church. Amusements and games are being put up for all to enjoy. Some of the Acolytes of the six deities of Sandpoint are performing a puppet show - an account of how Desna first fell to earth. The morning is yours, there are people to meet, things to do, and adventures to be had. What do you do?

Every podcaster on the planet wants a bigger audience. Unquestioned. But most of us start out with a great idea for a podcast (at least we think so), grab a mic, plug it in, hit the record button, and we start talking. We don’t start where we SHOULD start - with knowledge of the audience we want to speak to. Why is that so important? To answer the question I’ve asked Tommy Walker to be my guest on this episode. Tommy has vast experience in Content Marketing (which is what podasting is) and the principles he’s learned there apply directly - almost across the board - to podcasting. Listen up. Take notes. When we know that kind of stuff we’re able to track them down, hang out with them, talk about the things they are already interested in, befriend them, and eventually, get them interested in our podcast (because they are the kind of people who will like it). Tommy shares his approach to researching a target audience for content marketing - and it’s not so far off from what we need to be doing to find and befriend our listening audiences.   But that sounds like a lot of work, do I really have to do it?   Yep, it is a lot of work. And no, you don’t have to do it - not if you don’t care if your podcast audience grows. Not if you don’t want to find the people your podcast can truly help.   OK - I’m exaggerating a bit there. If you stay consistent with the production of great content, you MAY be able to attract a good following over time, through the slow trickle of word-of-mouth growth.   If that happens, it’s good. I’m happy for you - really. But if you want to get there faster… well, that’s why I asked Tommy to spill the beans for us.   On this episode he talks about things like demographics and psychographics - and unpacks them so we can understand what in the HECK he’s talking about.   SO THAT we can find, meet, befriend, and add value to the people who will benefit from our podcast. That’s something we all need, isn’t it? To speak to your audience effectively you need to know how they think   You will speak differently to a 45 year old man than you will to a Jr. High girl - for a number of reasons. But one of the main reasons is because you know they like different things, relate to different things, have extremely different opinions, and behave very differently.   The fact that you know that kind of stuff is - wait for it - because you know some psychographics about them.   Simply put, psychographics has to do with studying the activity, interests, opinions, attitudes, values, and behaviors of a group of people.   In YOUR case: the type of people who listen to a show that is about what YOUR show is about.   Capiche?   You need to know everything about your audience you can possibly know. Of course, there will be individual differences, but generally speaking, people interested in Dungeons and Dragons are also interested in Game of Thrones. People who are interested in Justin Beiber are also likely interested in the Twilight movies and books.   How do I know that? Psychographics.   What that MEANS for your show is this: If you’re trying to reach the kind of people who are interested in Justin Bieber, you may want to hang out in Facebook groups and physical locations where Twilight is a topic. You’re hanging out with the crowd you’re trying to reach, based on what you know about their entertainment choices.   Tommy explains how to go in-depth with that kind of research, on this episode. People who share your content aren’t jazzed about you. They share things as an extension of themselves.   It’s disappointing, I know - but the people who share your stuff do so because of how it makes them look - not because you are all that great. There’s nothing you can do about it - except capitalize on it (in a good way).   What is it that those “sharers” are trying to accomplish? How are they wanting to appear to their peers? You can help them achieve those goals by creating the kind of content they like to share.   And how do you know what kind of content that is? By doing your homework/research.   In this conversation Tommy Walker explains what you can do to create the kind of content your audience will be eager to share, so listen closely and take notes so you don’t miss it.

Blow on those dice, spend 30 minutes setting up that elaborate game board, and get ready to raise your glasses to Tabletop games -- either a great way to socialize, or the way to end friendships, as we discover in this episode. This episode's wine: 2014 Jigsaw Pinot Noir, Oregon This episode's cheese: Aged Reserve White Cheddar Find out a little bit of history behind International Tabletop Day,  from GeekandSundry.com, which is also the home of Wil Wheaton's show "Tabletop." Emily talks about the benefits of playing games for children and adults, and why she and her friends are no longer allowed to play Monopoly. Despite the popularity of video games, board games continue to rise in popularity. One reason games continue to be popular is the rise in crowdfunding games, such as one of our favorites, Scrimish, which you can win a copy of by going to classylittlepodcast.com/giveaway. Want to find out more about Scrimish? Check out inventor Danny Zondervan's video explaining game play over on the Kickstarter page. (Emily and her husband, Mark, are proud to say they helped Kickstart this campaign!) James, despite hating the game, talks about some of the history of Monopoly, including the real story behind the invention of it. Fun Fact: You cannot use the game board as a map around Atlantic City. We also want to go to the landfill to find buried copies of Anti-Monopoly. Also, what were some of your house rules you had while playing Monopoly? Let us know! Although James says Monopoly takes too long to play, Emily tells him how it's possible to play the game in 21 seconds. We also talk about the updates made to game, including changing cash to credit cards. Even though Monopoly may be responsible for the loss of friendship, the game was responsible for helping British prisoners of war escape during World War II. Emily freaks herself out researching Ouija boards, and she finds out the history, some precursors, and why mediums were more upset about Ouija boards at first than the church. Find out the reason for the Ouija board's name, how it was awarded a patent, and some of the other talking boards in existence. So, what makes the Ouija board work? It seems plausible that it could be spirits ... until you blindfold users. Watch on YouTube. We find out James' poo story, and you can hear more about poop stories from Off in the Weeds.  James gives us a game, Board Game or Racehorse? This is a tough, tough game, by the way! Emily even calls on Kitty to help her out. She even just starts guessing categories other than game or racehorse for a few of them. Because of this game, we decide we want to play Hey, That's My Fish! Find out what porn and polio has to do with Candyland. And we finally found a topic in which James really couldn't find any large corporations to judge this week! By the way, the Drunk History episode James refers to can be watched on CC.com. But James does talk a bit about Milton Bradley and some of the innovations he brought to America. And get the inside info on why we're an Explicit podcast. (It's James' fault. Clearly.) Apparently, we'll be planning a field trip to Springfield, Mass. Emily gives a few fun facts about Scrabble, including a terrible French/Spanish/Gibberish pronunciation of the International Federation of Scrabble! Thanks for your patience while Emily was feeling under the weather this week -- we tried to get this episode out as soon as possible. Actually, a HUGE thank you to her husband, Mark, who did a majority of editing for her while she had fever dreams that her cat was telepathically sending her a ideas for a book he wants to write.
