Geographically, Bizhiki is almost wholly a made-in-Wisconsin project, a collaboration between Dylan Bizhikiins Jennings, Joe Rainey and the multi-instrumentalist Sean Carey (aka S. Carey), who for years has been a secret weapon within the Bon Iver family. The collaboration between these three musicians first began at the Eaux Claires festival in 2015. The festival was being organized on Ojibwe's ancestral homelands, and the organizers didn't feel right without the inclusion of the native communities who lived nearby. The open-endedness of the initial invitation and the “let's just do something together” spirit continues to inform Bizhiki's process. Recording steadily over the course of years — and between several projects from Bizhiki's members, including two solo albums (Joe Rainey's Niineta and S. Carey's Break Me Open) – the trio chipped away at an expansive, ambitious and unique record that sounds like no other music being made today. On Unbound, the powwow style is entwined with synthesized voice modulation, and hand drumming is accented with electronic samples and beats. The harmonies and resonances on this album are equal parts cultural and musical. On this episode of Tent Show Radio, host & New York Times best-selling author Michael Perry and his band The Long Beds hit the Big Top stage. Michael Perry 's original songs are a direct reflection of his life experiences. Raised in rural Wisconsin by farmers, preachers, and tough country women, his songs reflect "certain wisdoms" available only from whistlers, frauds, and sinners. Ranging from straight-up twang to churchly harmonies and populated by characters drawn straight from rural and small-town America, they launch from places like the overpass outside Perry's beloved hometown of New Auburn, Wisconsin (population currently 562), a gospel service in a granary, and the kitchen floor of a woman about to drop a world of hurt on her drunken husband. Raised in a church so austere that hymns were sung with no choir, no accompaniment, and no church (the congregation met in a farmhouse and sat on straight-backed wooden chairs,) Perry and his brother learned to sit side-by-side and work out harmonies on the fly. Those Sunday mornings instilled in Perry a love of singing “clear and pure” that can be heard throughout all of his recordings. Perry began writing music in the early 1990s as a way to break up all-night typing sessions when he was struggling to survive on prose. Eventually, a musician friend invited him to play a coffee shop gig. Since then, Michael has released 4 albums, several singles, and toured - backed by a collection of renowned musicians who have performed on numerous stages throughout the world (including The Tonight Show, Austin City Limits, and Eaux Claires festival) and worked with a host of artists, including Bon Iver, S. Carey, The Staves, Miley Cyrus, Lizzo, Field Report, The Tallest Man on Earth, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and many more. Every Long Beds show is built on roughneck ballads and freight train rockers interspersed with hilarious off-the-cuff tales from Mike's diverse experience as a Wisconsin farm kid turned cowboy turned nurse turned best-selling author. Join Chris and Courtney in a sit down with Kyle Tran Myhre (Guante), author of Not a Lot of Reasons to Sing, But Enough (Button Poetry), about passions, process, pitfalls, and poetry! Kyle Tran Myhre (also known as Guante) is a poet, educator, and activist based in Minneapolis, MN. His work explores the relationships between identity, power, and resistance, and he's performed everywhere from the United Nations, to music festivals like Eaux Claires and Soundset, to countless colleges, universities, and conferences. He's also been part of two National Poetry Slam championship teams, given a TEDx Talk, and published two books via Button Poetry. Whether writing about men's roles in ending gender violence, challenging dominant narratives related to race and racism, or just telling stories about the different jobs he's had, Tran Myhre strives to cultivate a deeper, more critical engagement with social justice issues, one based in both empathy and agency. An educator as well as a performing artist, Tran Myhre completed his Masters studies at the University of Minnesota with a focus on spoken word, critical pedagogy, and social justice education; in that spirit, his performances use poems as jumping-off points for authentic dialogue, critical thinking, and community-building. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
We had the pleasure of interviewing Prinze George over Zoom video! EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE OF “OFF MY ASS” ON BRINGING IT BACKWARDS PODCAST Alt-pop group Prinze George premiered their new track, “Off My Ass” on American Songwriter’s Bringing It Backwards podcast! “Off My Ass” is the interpersonal journey of vocalist Naomi Almiquist, navigating her life amidst sudden loss, moving to Los Angeles, and the unfulfilled lows of the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspired by the words of a friend and an art installation about the San Andreas Fault, “find balance during unstable periods, turn fears into meditations, and remember the earth shouldn’t move you; you should move with it” - Naomi was fueled with inspiration to pen her personal struggles in song. Inspired by their hometown roots of Prince George’s County, Maryland, Prinze George is an American Alternative Pop band formed by life-long partners Kenny Grimm (Producer) and Naomi Almquist (Vocalist) in 2013. Soon after, the two recruited then-student Isabelle De Leon (Drummer) while at college. Influenced by a wide array of genres - from folk to electronica to R&B - Prinze George’s music takes the listener on an emotional, introspective journey. With strong harmonics rooted in live instrumentation, danceable grooves in the outer layer of their discography, and themes of love, friendship, loss and perseverance - Prinze George is emerging and transcending across radars, giving a fresh perspective to the pop genre lyrically and sonically. Following the release of their self-titled EP Prinze George, the band went on tour with Albert Hammond Jr as direct support in 2015. Bolstering their growing reputation, they dropped their debut album, Illiterate Synth Pop, in 2016 and joined Lewis Del Mar on his North American Tour. After impressing fans at festivals like Austin City Limits, Eaux Claires, and Firefly with their nostalgic, synth-soaked sound, innovative and distinctive lyrics, and mesmerizing, gripping performances, the band released their last EP, Airborne in 2018. Around the same time, Naomi and Kenny were given the opportunity to write songs for actor/director Til Schweiger’s film “Head Full of Honey” in Europe. They continued to expand their loyal following and break genre barriers thanks to a string of collaborations in 2019 with some of the industry’s top artists like Carnage, Diplo, G-Eazy & Wiz Khalifa (“Slot Machine,” “Letting People Go” & “Wait For Me”). Their latest EP effort, Happy Garden, dropped March 26th of this year, featuring singles “Garden in the Sky,” “Taller,” and “Centuries.” We want to hear from you! Chris Rosenau (Collections of Colonies Of Bees, Volcano Choir) and Nick Sanborn (Sylvan Esso, Made Of Oak) have traveled in the same creative circles for years now, but it was an off-the-cuff improv set at the inaugural Eaux Claires fest that has led to one of the most powerful releases of 2019, Bluebird. The open window and doors of the small North Carolina studio that Bluebird was recorded in gives the EP a sense of place in the world, but it is the magic weaved between Rosenau’s guitar and Sanborn’s electronic wizardry that pulls the listener wholly out of time and space into a moment of creation that is unlike anything you’re likely to experience this year.PLUS! Alexandra Sauser-Monnig (Mountain Man) makes her debut as Daughter Of Swords on her new LP Dawnbreaker. Taking it’s subject from the eventual end of Sauser-Monnig’s relationship with her partner, Dawnbreaker is brimming with heartbreak, warmth, and quiet moments of wisdom on how we all deal with the end of a relationship, and learn to love not just someone else, but ourselves again. We’re part of the Osiris podcast network. Paul Simon has always been attracted to new kinds of sounds. From his early band Simon & Garfunkel in the 1960s through solo albums like Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints in the '80s and '90s, up through his recent albums So Beautiful or So What and Stranger to Stranger, Simon has made music that does what the very best art can do: it resonates with our experience, re-frames it, and introduces new timbres and ideas.Recently, Simon’s curious mind has brought him into the world of contemporary classical music, mining the microtonal sound world of Harry Partch for his last record, and, just last month, collaborating with 10 composers and the ensemble yMusic on a set at the Eaux Claires music festival. On this episode of Meet the Composer – the final of Season Three – we hear Simon's perspective on his career and his most recent projects, as well as exclusive audio from the festival collaboration itself. To list out Milwaukeean Chris Rosenau’s current and former groups is to go back to the dusty depths of the late 90s (Vermont) and page through to the ever-morphing and still active projects of Collections of Colonies of Bees and Volcano Choir. The current state of Rosenau sees him taking a solo flight, but not straying far from the source of his group musical roots, past or current; guitars create an undulating storyline that is lively and inspiring, joined together by loops and subtle auxiliary embellishments. The recent output of Rosenau’s solo effort is a pair of songs recorded for a 2011 performance at Milwaukee’s Cactus Club that on record, adds that auxiliary instrumentation from his family members. “Pearl” and “F/Lynn” was released on Bandcamp this past summer and was re-performed for the Eaux Claires fesitval in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and a return show at the Cactus Club.
Sean and Matt are still exhausted after a long, wet weekend in Wisconsin, but came together to give the faithful Springheads what they crave and desire. We review our experience at Eaux Claires, and explore another epic partnership: between Bruce and Mr. Crazy Horse himself, Neil Young.
