Under current law in Minnesota, kids have to be at least 10 years old to be prosecuted for a crime. On Aug. 1, that bar will be raised to 13. The change is a result of legislation originally passed in 2024. Once it takes effect, Minnesota will become one of only three states with a minimum age of delinquency of 13, joining Maryland and New Hampshire. But some county officials say their agencies are not prepared for the change. MPR News host Nina Moini talked with two people who have raised concerns. Nicole Kern is director of community corrections in Morrison County in central Minnesota. And Anne Broskoff is director of human services in Brown County in southern Minnesota.

What does it take to turn 325 acres of Indiana woods into a national spirits brand and an "adult Disneyland" that pulls visitors from across the country? In this episode of The Upgraded Man Podcast, Chris Anderson sits down with Jeff McCabe, co-founder of Hard Truth Distilling Co., for a wide-ranging conversation on craft, mindset, family, and the long game of building something that lasts. Jeff is a Naval Academy graduate and former Navy pilot who went on to run a major part of the business travel and corporate card division at American Express before stepping away to chase a different kind of dream in Brown County. Alongside his partners and his own family, he built Big Woods, Quaff On, and Hard Truth into an experience that visitors remember long after they leave. In this conversation, you'll hear: Why a whiskey tastes better at 93 proof than 90, and what that obsession with detail reveals about doing anything well The Charlie Munger philosophy on the wall of his boardroom, and the wild family connection to Munger that Jeff only learned recently What the Naval Academy taught him about failing, and why learning to fail removed his fear of it How he leads people who don't share his mindset by listening first and meaning what he says The realities of running a business with his son, daughter, and son-in-law all under one roof Where he was on the morning of 9/11, and how being out of New York let him help in a way no one else could The McCabe family history, from Irish Gallowglass roots to two uncles' bars and a now-legendary dance hall story The Byron Nelson lesson that stuck with him for life: never putt short Whether you're building a company, leading a team, or just trying to navigate whatever life throws your way, Jeff's blend of hard-won wisdom and Midwest grit offers something to take home. Hard Truth Distilling Co. is located in Nashville, Indiana, in the heart of Brown County, and its spirits are now distributed across 38 states. Plan a visit to walk the property, take a distillery tour, or build a custom experience of your own. Brick Lombardi is back behind the glass on Tundra FM After Dark, cranking the volume until the windows in Ashwaubenon rattle. Tonight we unleash the industrial, mechanical, and completely inevitable force of Green Bay's defense — the Iron Wall that stands ten feet high and the Frozen Hell that swallows anyone dumb enough to challenge it. We break down the collision of steel and flesh, the wolves circling in Brown County, and the lyrics that capture every sack, every lockdown, and every moment hope leaves an opponent's lungs at 40 yards. Back again! This week on the show the Dakota Town Hall crew heads northeast and northwest with Senate candidates Katie Washnock and Ryan Maher, plus ballot champion Nathan Sanderson. We get into collapsing voter turnout, the Republican civil war tearing through Brown County, and why campaigns are suddenly fighting over data centers, power grids, and property taxes all at once. Plus, a deep dive into what's actually headed for the statewide ballot, why Pierre can't stop tinkering with the constitution, and whether South Dakota voters are about to get hit with another round of ballot measure chaos. Then things get weird. The crew swaps stories about forum meltdowns, “rhino” scorecards, duct tape parenting controversies, and the rumor mill surrounding forged precinct paperwork in Minnehaha County. There's also a classic Dakota Town Hall detour into Irish revolutionaries, reservation bar stories, and the best burgers in South Dakota before the gang closes with some unfiltered thoughts on the Rhoden vs. Dusty primary fight and why nobody in this state seems to actually vote anymore. Same chaos, new week.@DakotaTownHall@Jakeshoenbeck@MurdocJ Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In April and May of 1986, Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe walked the streets of Bloomington and recorded Lifes Rich Pageant at Mellencamp's Belmont Mall Studio in Brown County.* So how could we resist getting in the wayback machine to dig up some stories? David Brent Johnson, our college rock oracle, led us back to 1986. Along the way we heard from Zirque Boner, James Combs, Mark McCormick, Kelly Walsh, Barb Stahl, and Lawrence Wells. *By the way, that's not a typo. According to music journalist Tim Peacock, "Peter Buck stated: 'We all hate apostrophes. Michael insisted, and I agreed, that there's never been a good rock album that's had an apostrophe in the title.'" "Talk About The Pageant: When R.E.M. Just after midnight on May 10, 1996, a motorist in Brown County, Texas called 911. They report that they'd been driving along Farm Road 2126 when they saw a burning car. It was parked just off the road, near the entrance to a gun range. Minutes later, a second motorist called 911 to report they had spotted a body lying near the burning car. When the fire department and Sheriff's deputies show up, the car is engulfed in flames. While inspecting the scene, they find the body of 30-year-old Leon Laureles. The Brown County Sheriff's department has theirs but won't acknowledge that there might be a better one: a theory that actual makes sense and seems to better fit the known facts – that the slaying was an act of hate. But, of course, there are other plausible theories and some recent information that allows for even more speculation. Still though, with the climate of hate towards the gay and lesbian community, among other groups, in Brown County and the city of Brownwood, the possibility that Leon's murder was a hate crime is extremely possible and plausible. Did the Sheriff's Department investigation lag because Leon Laureles was gay? It certainly seems that way.If you have any information on the 1996 murder of Juan Leon Laureles, please contact the Brown County Sheriff's Office at 325-646-5510.You can support gone cold and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFor Gone Cold merch, visit https://gonecold.dashery.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. Part 1 of 2. 30-year-old Juan Leon Laureles was well-loved and respected by his family and friends. So, when he was murdered execution style and his vehicle set afire, those who knew and loved him were shocked; Leon didn't live a high-risk lifestyle by any stretch of the imagination. Through the years, as his case has grown colder and colder, the Brown County Sheriff's Department's theory of a motive makes less and less sense. However, as a gay Hispanic man, Leon Laureles killed as the result of an act of hate - of bigotry - seems very plausible. For Arlene, Leon's niece who is only a couple years younger than him and was his best friend, the uncertainty and mystery surrounding what happened and why is excruciating. Much of Leon's remaining family, in fact, live with the pain every waking moment. The Brown County Sheriff's Department is no closer to solving Leon's murder than they were the day it happened, and, perhaps, it's because they refuse to see it as it is.If you have any information about the 1996 murder of Juan Leon Laureles, please contact the Brown County Sheriff's Office at 325-646-5510.You can support gone cold and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFor Gone Cold merch, visit https://gonecold.dashery.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X.
