Well actually this episode it's hosted by two Australians and one Canadian as Kollin was unable to join this week (we suspect he's hiding from a certain character). It is back to basics for this week with Super Marcey, Bede Jermyn and Prof. Batch, although what sort of time are they in for with it being Bede's choice of film ... he did pick a Troma released film called Nightbeast (1982), it can't be a bad time can it? Well you'll need to tune in and find out if Marcey and Batch enjoyed this film and haven't banned Bede!Nightbeast was directed by Don Dohler, it stars Tom Griffith, Jamie Zemarel, Karin Kardian, George Stover, Don Leifert Anne Frith and Eleanor Herman. If you have never listened to a commentary before and want to watch the film along with the podcast, here is how it works. You simply need to grab a copy of the film or load it up on Tubi (you may need alcohol), and sync up the podcast audio with the film. We will tell you when to press and you follow along, it is that easy! Because we have watched the films on Tubi, it is a free service and there are ads, however we will give a warning when it comes up, so you can pause the film and provide time stamps to keep in sync.Highlights include:* Sadly no Kollin this week, we blame Sherry Lou Lou ...* The podcast now has a President in Louise, what are we in for?* This Nightbeast alien looks like a lot of different things!* This cop dude's hair gets more curly and more grey in every scene!* Is Drago or the alien the villain?* What is going on?!* No seriously, what is this movie?* Plus much, much more!Check out The Super Network on Patreon to gain early access to The Tubi Tuesdays Podcast!DISCLAIMER: This audio commentary isn't meant to be taken seriously, it is just a humourous look at a film. It is for entertainment purposes, we do not wish to offend anyone who worked on and in the film, we have respect for you all.Music provided by DeNNo, introduction and podcast editing by Super Marcey & Bede Jermyn Hosted on Acast. From Hamlet's father being murdered by poison, to Romeo killing himself when he drinks poison, and several instances of hemlock, dragon's scales, hebenon and others in between, Shakespeare utilizes poison as a dramatic device in several of his works. The use of poison was not just an easy tool for a plot twist, however, since poison was both a pervasive fear at all levels of society as well as a convenient and readily available method to dispatch someone, given that poison was incredibly hard to trace back to the criminal that administered it. The fear of poison was exacerbated by a broad ignorance of chemistry, resulting in many of the accepted treatments for illness being, in themselves, poison (Syphilis was routinely treated with mercury, for example, which is toxic.) Doctors, as well as monarchs, developed elaborate and unusual tactics for prevention and cure for poison, while those seeking to overthrow a monarch, or take out their enemy, used poison to come up with some sophisticated and complex designs for murder. Here today to share with us the history of real poisons from Shakespeare's lifetime used for medical and criminal application, as well as some ordinary items no one knew was trying to kill them, is our guest and author of The Royal Art of Poison: Filthy Palaces, Fatal Cosmetics, Deadly Medicine, and Murder Most Foul. On this episode of #WeNeedToTalk, Malynda chats with New York Times Best Selling Author Eleanor Herman about her latest book Off with Her Head. They explore the history of misogyny, how it shows up is everyday society, the hypocrisy of reactions towards men, how participation in one "ism" usually means participation in other, and how we as a society can begin to break down misogyny. Eleanor Herman is the New York Times bestselling author of Sex with Presidents, Sex with Kings, Sex with the Queen, and several other works of popular history. She has hosted Lost Worlds for the History Channel, The Madness of Henry VIII for the National Geographic Channel, as well as a second season of America: Fact vs. Fiction for the American Heroes Channel. Her latest offering, OFF WITH HER HEAD uses Herman's signature wit and sharp eye to oust the unsettling pattern of misogyny impeding female leadership worldwide.
In a story that is shocking, eye-opening, and a powerful force for change, New York Times bestselling author Eleanor Hermans explores the patterns that have been operating for more than three thousand years—and are still operating today—against powerful women across the globe, including Cleopatra, Anne Boleyn, Marie Antoinette, Catherine the Great, Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris, and more. Join us on this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large, when Eleanor Herman expounds on this particular kind of rage—she calls unadulterated bloodlust—usually reserved for women, especially women in power or vying for it. From the ancient world, through the European Renaissance, up to the most recent U.S. elections, the Misogynist's Handbook, as Eleanor Herman calls it, has been wielded to put uppity women in their place.
Misogyny in politics is as old as politics itself. But is there hope for progress? Eleanor Herman, author of Off With Her Head: Three Thousand Years of Demonizing Women in Power, joins host Richard Aldous to talk about her new book.
What do Hatshepsut and Hillary Clinton have in common?Well, what do they have in common with the vast majority of women who have been so successful as to gain power? Women like Britain's new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, just the third woman to hold the title. They have been subject to some very specific criticism which, whether it's based on their looks or their character, would be unlikely to be directed at men in the same position. We're joined again Betwixt the Sheets by Eleanor Herman, whose new book ‘Off With Her Head: Three Thousand Years of Demonising Women in Power' is out now.*WARNING there are naughty words and adult themes in this episode*Produced by Charlotte Long and Sophie Gee. NYT Best-Selling Historian Eleanor Herman joins Dash to trace back 3000 years of violent gender struggles surrounding power. She draws from her new book, Off With Her Head, to show how society has conditioned women into subordination, why feminism is often viewed as a threat by both males & females, and how Big-Tech algorithms are deliberately perpetuating the gender culture wars. Sex with Presidents: The Ins and Outs of Love and Lust in the White House by Eleanor Herman Eleanorherman.com In this fascinating work of popular history, the New York Times bestselling author of Sex with Kings and The Royal Art of Poison uncovers the bedroom secrets of American presidents and explores the surprising ways voters have reacted to their leaders’ sex scandals. While Americans have a reputation for being strait-laced, many of the nation’s leaders have been anything but puritanical. Alexander Hamilton had a steamy affair with a blackmailing prostitute. John F. Kennedy swam nude with female staff in the White House swimming pool. Is it possible the qualities needed to run for president—narcissism, a thirst for power, a desire for importance—go hand in hand with a tendency to sexual misdoing? In this entertaining and eye-opening book, Eleanor Herman revisits some of the sex scandals that have rocked the nation's capital and shocked the public, while asking the provocative questions: does rampant adultery show a lack of character or the stamina needed to run the country? Or perhaps both? While Americans have judged their leaders' affairs harshly compared to other nations, did they mostly just hate being lied to? And do they now clearly care more about issues other than a politician’s sex life? What is sex like with the most powerful man in the world? Is it better than with your average Joe? And when America finally elects a female president, will she, too, have sexual escapades in the Oval Office? Eleanor Herman is the New York Times best-selling author of Sex with Kings and Sex with the Queen, non-fiction works on the love lives of European royals through the centuries;Mistress of the Vatican, the biography of a woman who ran the Catholic Church in the 17th century for her reputed lover, Pope Innocent; and King Peggy, the true story of a Washington, DC secretary who became a king of Ghana. In 2015 her first YA novel came out. Legacy of Kings, Blood of Gods and Royals is the first of four books on the adventures of Alexander the Great at sixteen. It has been optioned by the WB network for a TV series. She has appeared on the National Geographic Channel, The History Channel, and the American Heroes Channel to comment about historical matters. Eleanor is so immersed in the past she is sometimes surprised to find herself in the present. She lives in McLean, VA with her husband, four rescue cats, and a dog, and sneaks out to the movies periodically, not to see the movie, but actually to eat the hot buttered popcorn.
