Mindfulness is a great way to find more joy and center yourself. In this time of transition, when things feel difficult, it's great to have a few easy, go-to mindfulness tools. The five are: 1. Notice your emotions, and share them with someone else. 2. Breathe, as taught by Thich Nhat Hanh. I share his practice of inhaling, exhaling, and smiling. 3. Observe (or spend time in) Nature. As discussed in my previous episode with Emma Loewe, author of Return to Nature, nature has restorative properties for humans. When you feel stressed, take a moment to look out your window or take a break for a walk if you have the time. 4. Meditate, using a visual or guided meditation. 5. Spend time walking a labyrinth, either by physically walking a labyrinth or using a hand labyrinth. It was such an honor to have this conversation with Emma Loewe, Senior Sustainability Editor at mindbodygreen and Author of Return to Nature, The New Science of How Natural Landscapes Restore Us. Is it okay to admit this was probably my favorite podcast I have ever recorded? In this episode, we dive into what it looks like to simplify wellness, and without being too cheesy, to Return to Nature. We explore the physiological and psychological effects of different terrains: like oceans, deserts, parks, forests, and even snow. One of the most profound responses of nature is AWE: what we feel when we are faced with a perceived vastness. "Research has found that awe is one of the few emotions that make it okay for us to change our minds about things, and can reorganize the way we see the world in front of us." This is why I call nature The Great Reprioritizer: because it makes you feel small, it can dwarf the issues that seemed enormous before you started your walk in the park. Nature can serve as mental rest, when there aren't that many other sources of it in our busy lives. Don't for a second think that you can't get into nature if you live far from it, or if you live somewhere that it is icy half the year, or if you just aren't “outdoorsy.” That's like saying a fish isn't really into water. If you are human, you are outdoorsy. There are beautiful systems jumping into place all over the world to get people more in touch with our environment: walk with a doc, forest bathing, nature walks, etc… And there are tools to disconnect from technology or stressors and reconnect to the world around us, we just need to use them. This episode shows you WHY to return to nature, and then will get you excited about how to do so. You can find Return To Nature anywhere books are sold, including here: https://www.amazon.com/Return-Nature-Science-Natural-Landscapes/dp/0063061279 Or on her website: www.emmaloewe.comIf you are looking for support in your health journey, you can find the transformational KYPO 12 week Functional Nutrition and Health Course at www.howtokeepyourplantson.com/programand follow along on instagram @keepyourplantson !
We all know that, long ago, humans lived outside in a way that was much more connected to the land. Over time, we've evolved to spend most of our time indoors, usually connecting with screens much more throughout the day than nature. While this shift is taking a toll on our physical and mental health, you don't have to live in a mountain town or book a wilderness trip to reap most of the benefits of the outdoors. In this episode, I connect with writer and environmentalist Emma Lowe on her mission to uncover the latest research on the healing potential of spending time in nature. We discuss her book, Return to Nature: The Science of How Natural Landscapes Restore Us. The book journeys through eight distinct landscapes and explores a mix of new scientific studies and ancient spiritual wisdom on the healing properties of reclaiming our relationship with nature. It also offers non-preachy solutions for building a more reciprocal connection with our environment. Emma is an environmental journalist and senior sustainability editor at mindbodygreen. In addition to her recent book, she co-authored The Spirit Almanac. Here's what to expect in this episode: -The difference between wilderness and nature, and why that distinction is important -Why it's so important for us to connect with the green spaces around us -Why living in a city is no excuse for missing out on the benefits of nature -The positive impact being outside can have on your mental health -The argument between taking a break in nature vs. taking a passive break inside -What green exercise is and its unique benefits -How we engage and think about nature as we age -Five- and 10-minute intentional practices you can do near the water, in the snow and in urban environments to better your mental health and connection Connect with Emma: IG: @emmaloewe Website Get a copy of Return to Nature: The Science of How Natural Landscapes Restore Us Connect with Whitney: IG: @whitneywoman

Written by Brittany ShenkHAPPY PODCAST THURSDAY, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: we are so pumped to have Emma Loewe, the sustainability editor at mindbodygreen, on our podcast this week. All of us here at ecofemmag are huge fans of her work and often pop over to mbg to skim Emma’s latest articles. Her voice is powerful, yet gentle, and we find inspiration in her ability to stay optimistic about healing the planet, which is not always an easy thing to do.Fun fact about Emma: she studied Environmental Science at Duke University to learn how to spread awareness about environmental issues through storytelling. Another fun fact? That’s exactly what she’s doing. AKA: she’s crushin’ it.One of the reasons we wanted to bring Emma onto the show - other than the fact that we’re a little #obsessed - was to chat about a book she recently co-authored, The Spirit Almanac: A Modern Guide To Ancient Self-Care. The title alone makes my heart vibrate. Her book is a seasonal guide to improving overall wellness using ancient rituals, and I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy. “Our main intention with the book was to add a little bit more meaning and purpose behind self-care...we really wanted to weave in some of the history behind some more self-care practices to add a little bit more context.”We hope you can set aside 20 minutes of your day to listen to this podcast with Emma. Her passion for self-care, environmental activism, and sharing news through storytelling rings loud and clear, and we need more energy like that bouncing around in the universe. We encourage all of you to check out Emma's website, and follow her on mindbodygreen and Instagram. Thank you Emma, from the bottom of our hearts, for setting aside time to chat with us on the ecofemmag podcast. We’re thrilled to see what you do next. Emma Loewe is a NYC-based writer and editor. I am so excited today to be interviewing Emma Loewe and Lindsay Kellner. They are co-authors of the book 'The Spirit Almanac: A Modern Guide to Ancient Self-Care.' I am so excited for the release of this book. It's something that really speaks to my soul. Ashley: As many of you know, I'm a huge advocate for self-care. This is something that's so important in our lives and that not many of us really take the time to do like we should in modern times. So, I want you to take some time to sit back and listen to this interview. Take it all in because I know that these amazing ladies will be sharing some phenomenal advice with all of you. So Emma and Lindsay, thank you so much for being here today. Lindsay Kellner: No, thank you for having us, we're so excited! Ashley: Well, I am really grateful that you wrote this book because I think it is so needed in the world. I'm also just grateful that you are taking time to be here and share it with everyone. Would you mind telling us a little bit about yourselves and how you got started on this spiritual journey of self-care, and also how that inspired you to write this book? Lindsay: Yes, that's a great question. I am the beauty and wellness editor at MindBodyGreen. It's actually interesting - I'm in a little bit of a transition phase at work, so by the time this episode comes out I will be a contributing editor for MindBodyGreen and I will also be continuing my own blog and podcast called ‘Well Aware.’ I live in Brooklyn, New York. I'm a Leo, my mom is a Cancer. By trade, I'm a writer and editor, but I've always been interested in wellness, which I feel is such a weird word to use right now because it's so ubiquitous and it can mean so many different things. For me, the way I got started with wellness was actually through yoga. I started doing yoga when I was 13, which was quite a while ago (I'm 31 now!). I registered for a class at my town’s recreational center and it was me and a bunch of senior citizens [laughs]. Yoga really did bring me into myself and into my body. I wasn't somebody who loves sports. I guess, I never really developed that hand-eye coordination that you need to really succeed in sports. There was something about the solitude of yoga that really took the pressure off. It gave me the time and the space that I needed to come into myself. So I think, for me, my journey started certainly when I started taking yoga classes - even though I didn't really know it at the time. It was a physical release for me. In high school and college I had eating disorders, so like many of us who come into wellness because of some kind of illness, I think my spiritual journey began when I truly started to heal from that. Ashley: How does that translate for you into shifting into this appreciation for self-care, and how did that kind of tie into the creation of this book? Lindsay: I think that I'm somebody with a tendency to be a perfectionist. I think that's a character trait that goes along oftentimes with having eating disorders and a certain personality type. So a lot of the time I see things as very black-and-white, and developing an awareness around that was really the first step in my journey. I started to do a lot of different types of healing modalities on my own. I also engaged in many years of therapy and one-on-one counselling - spiritual and non. For me, I really notice when I'm not doing enough self-care. Even as I'm talking to you now, I'm going through a huge transition that I feel like is a radical act of self-care. I'm leaving a full-time job to give myself more time, because I've started to go through a personal health crisis, and that's manifested in a lot of ways. I've had a lot of symptoms over the last few months of heart palpitations and dizzy spells and all of these kinds of things that you can't really trace - or I haven't yet been able to trace. I've been to so many doctors to try and get some sort of specific diagnosis.
