Jim McVicker imbues atmosphere and light into his paintings that stir the heart. Whether it’s an expansive view of the Pacific coast near his home in Humboldt County, California, or an intimate interior still life set within his studio – his paintings are filled with a sense of solace and peace. Jim began painting full time in the mid-1970s. His early education as a painter began when working closely with artists Curtis Otto, James B. Moore, and George Van Hook. Painting nearly every day together, Jim assimilated what he observed, but developed his own voice. Though his primary joy is in painting representational art, Jim experimented heavily with abstract and non-objective painting for a few years. He says the lessons he learned from that period of experimentation positively influenced his approach to representational painting. Jim values painting outdoors and in the studio. You could say he has two studios – the great outdoors and his home studio. In this episode, Jim encourages us to embrace painting direct from life and to allow ourselves to be taught by nature. Rather than rigorously follow tedious formulas and rules of design, Jim encourages us to trust our intuition as an artist. Jim’s keen use of his artistic eye, mind, and heart have beautifully honed his way of seeing. Why is it so hard for photographers to take a craftsman's approach to their work. Photography seems to miss an essential part of the creative process, craftsmen teach us how to fix that.   ----more---- In his book “A Craftsman’s Legacy : Why working with our hands gives us meaning”, Eric Gorges shares a core truth about what a craftsman does. “That’s another one of the contradictions of being a craftsman - putting my heart and soul into it, thinking about it in my sleep and spending my days with it, and then letting it go.” It got me thinking about how, even though in many ways photography IS a craft and we as photographers go through the same level of agony and ecstasy as we pour all of ourselves into our work, we often get hung up on that final piece. We don’t like to let go of our work.  I believe there may be real value in finding a way to complete the process of the creative cycle by figuring out how to let the finished work go.    Enjoy what I do? The only way to hear the still small voice is to slow down. Of course, that’s easier said then done, like most worthy goals. In this episode we talk to a master craftsman about the process, the journey and the joy. In this episode we learn: - a slower approach to the creative process can yield surprising results and allow you to see and know more - consider and appreciate your origin story - maybe it’s time to use all the colors in the crayon box again - sometimes it’s good to just make a decision, regardless of whether it’s right or wrong - supporting and appreciating local artisans and craftspeople is good for all of us - perfection is an illusion; let that s^#t go - tell clients the story of special objects—how they are made and info about the artist Learn more on this topic and guest at: https://businessofdesign.com/podcasts/

Builders are some of the most fascinating characters in motorcycling today, with fame and influence that reaches every corner of the sport. But what makes them tick? Are they just fellow riders with more skill and ambition than the rest of us? Meet Eric Gorges, founder of Detroit’s Voodoo Choppers and host of the American Public Television series, “A Craftsman’s Legacy.” Besides creating bespoke motorcycles, Gorges has made a career out of studying people who work with their hands. In this candid conversation, he reveals that the drive to make things is an obsession all its own, even if it happens to mirror everything we love about riding motorcycles.

Eric walked away from a lucrative corporate career. At that period in his life, he knew three very simple things; he loved bikes, he loved working with his hands and he needed a job. He sought out one of the best metal shapers in the country and eventually signed on as his apprentice. Starting in the business from the ground floor up, Eric started working on vintage cars and building “one of a kind” hot rods. In April of 1999, with years of building and design work under his belt, he decided to strike out on his own and Voodoo Choppers was born. In episode 22 of Breaking Walls we sit down with Metalworker, Entrepreneur, and the host of PBS’ A Craftsman’s Legacy, Eric Gorges, for a conversation about ways and reasons to change careers midstream. Eric once worked in the 9-5 world. After a life altering series of events put his health in jeopardy, he left that world to pursue something that meant more to him and in that, discovered metalworking. He is the owner of Voodoo Choppers in Detroit where he builds custom motorcycles. Eric also hosts PBS’ A Craftsman’s Legacy, which is about to enter its second season. Eric interviews other craftsman in their element, works with them, and viewers and Eric alike learn something new. None of this could have happened if he didn’t take risks along the way. Highlights • What caused Eric to question the 9-5 life and ultimately leave that world • How Eric became involved in metalworking • The difference between working for someone else and running your own business • What drives Eric creatively • Advice on ways to get out of the 9-5 world if you’re looking to • Advice on following your heart • How A Craftsman’s Legacy was put together • Eric’s relationship with PBS and, program sponsor, Ford • What is progressive perfection Season 2 of A Craftsman’s Legacy will be rolling out in U.S. markets on PBS starting 9.6.2015. This fall, the Herron School of Art and Design Gallery welcomed its new director, Colin Tuis Nesbit. A Craftsman's Legacy is a new show airing on WFYI 3 and features motorcycle builder Eric Gorges apprenticing with a different craftsperson each week to learn about their work. What's an "Artville"? Among other things, it's unusual partnership between Irvington's 5547 Art Project and the Stutz Artists Association.

Amazing episode reviews the PBS show 'A Craftsman's Legacy' with Eric Gorges. Eric goes over the craftsmen that he has on his show and we review how these entrepreneurs all relate to you. These are masters who engage in pure historical methods and industries. They are all earning their living based on their crafts. On this episode, Eric and I explore the parallels between these masters of their craft and entrepreneurial journeys. Contrary to what you may think, some started later in life. The show itself will be an extraordinary element to explain not only a craft, but what does it take to excel. There is a different specialty craft on each show and will make you realize why these crafts are still very important today and what makes them special. Eric apprentices under each one of them and you can get a bit of a feel for the learning process and for the entrepreneur, you can understand what true passion is. Keep in mind that passion can be developed and is an attitude, not just a love of something. We discuss all of these and more. The show includes 13 crafts just to name a few are the Stone Carver, Saddlemaker, Guitar Maker, Goldsmith, Woodworker and Boatmaker. These journeys that Eric takes really set a great example to set your own path for a career you love or how to make side or secondary income with a hobby or skill. This time I sat down with a great friend, Eric Gorges from Voodoo Choppers. We talked about the state of the industry, the state of Voodoo Choppers and the State of Michigan. Voodoo Choppers survived the financial crisis and is set to lead a new charge. We'll find out what Eric has been up to and we talk a little about his craftsmanship and his metal shaping class! This was recorded on location in Clinton Township, Michigan over the Thanksgiving holiday week in 2012.
