"...Just so you know what level of quirky we're operating at."Happy holidays! We're celebrating the season by reading Maureen Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle's 2008 short story collection, Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances, and trying not to be too grinchy about it. Topics covered span from the Netflix Christmas Universe and Piggy Smalls to an impassioned discussion about a story's gross mischaracterization of Shrek. In addition, we continue spreading the good word of Waffle House and listen to one of the most inspired musical performances of all time. There Are Raisins in My Toast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_LnuPFnJXY Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Tenth grade really is just /so/ crazy. Maddie's facing her driver's test (and getting used by the Queen Bee), Angela's going on bad dates (is 2 weeks the paper anniversary?), and Zoe's discovering religion (while getting groomed by her English teacher).  Mary takes Renee through the whirlwind instant message of Lauren Myracle's ttyl, although the true miracle was finishing the book at all—it's filled with horribly outdated slurs, bad takes on predatory relationships, and absolutely no character development. But it does have some funny reviews on Goodreads, and it brings back memories of Mary's good old days catfishing on instant messenger sites. Episode Source Material: ttyl by Lauren Myracle

You did an amazing job moderating the "Let It Snow" panel and, as one of the panelists said, "you're doing the Lord's work as a librarian." You're the superhero we don't deserve, but the one that we need.

For the final regular...er...full length episode of the year, Brenna and Joe embrace the festivities of the season with a trip to Starbucks and a dip into 2008's Let It Snow, the trio of novellas by Maureen Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle. We're also checking out the 2019 adaptation by Luke Snellin, which coincidentally stars every teen actor under contract on a Netflix series.Up for discussion: which of the three novellas does Brenna *strongly* dislike and what makes it far less successful than the other two (A: Addie & Starbucks)? A debate whether this is the most slight book we've ever covered and why the film fails in its ambition to be a YA Love, Actually.  Also: the laughable snow, the logistics of animal adoption and a serious discussion on ableism.  STARBUCKS. In homework: Brenna asks for some holiday cheer in the form of reviews, while Joe circles back around to explain why Greta Gerwig's 2019 adaptation of Little Women  may be the best interpretation yet.Wanna connect with the show? Greetings Citizens! Today, I talk about my second favorite graphic novel to come out of DC Ink by NY Times bestselling author, Lauren Myracle. This riveting tale of struggling to find light in the dark brought me closer to Selina Kyle than any story has before and I hope that you get the chance to experience it too! I dive into some of the darker themes of the novel, my opinion on what age-range is appropriate and the differences between "Under The Moon" and "Mera". Strap In! And keep an Elseworld State of Mind! - Sincerely your host, T.J. How many times have you heard the story of Cinderella? Or Beauty and the Beast? Probably dozens. And yet somehow, they never get old. No matter how they're told and re-told, we know good will triumph over evil, our heroine will find love, and everyone will live happily ever after. But why do those stories have so much appeal? Today, we have two fairy tale experts joining us to share their thoughts on why these stories have endured generation after generation: authors Sarah Mlynowski and Garth Nix. Sarah and Garth are two writers who have often fractured, or re-told, fairy tales. Sarah, for her bestselling Whatever After series, and Garth, in his most recent YA novel, Frogkisser!.  Additional Resources: More about the Whatever After series by Sarah Mlynowski More about Frogkisser! by Garth Nix Researchers believe Beauty and the Beast is based on a story that's nearly 4,000 years old Guests: Sarah Mlynowski is the New York Times bestselling author of the Whatever After series, the Magic in Manhattan series, Gimme a Call, and a bunch of other books for tweens and teens, including the Upside-Down Magic series, which she is cowriting with Lauren Myracle and Emily Jenkins. Originally from Montreal, Sarah now lives in the kingdom of Manhattan with her very own prince charming and their fairy-tale-loving daughter Garth Nix is the bestselling, award-winning author of the Old Kingdom series, The Seventh Tower sequence, The Keys to the Kingdom series, Troubletwisters series, and many other fantasy novels for young adults and children, including Frogkisser!.
