In this episode, understand the complex world of feline pain with Dr. Stacy McVicker. These whiskered companions are masters at masking discomfort, but Dr. McVicker's expertise, inspired by the stories of James Herriot, equips us with the tools to uncover what our cats cannot voice. We chart the journey from the veiled signs of pain in our feline friends to actionable steps that can significantly enhance their quality of life. Ferris, a community cat with hyperthyroidism and spine pain, becomes our case study in understanding the importance of a patient veterinarian. This episode isn't just about sad tales; it's about real solutions, including groundbreaking treatments like Solensia and simple yet effective environmental changes that can transform a cat's golden years. We also talk about the "lift the lid" strategy, which might just revolutionize how shelters and pet owners handle litter box challenges. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Francesca Telese from UC San Diego and Jessica Zhou from Cold Spring Harbour about their work on the molecular underpinnings of human addiction. Francesca Telese worked on neuronal enhancers and their pivotal role in governing gene activity. She sheds light on her remarkable findings concerning the epigenetic signature of neuronal enhancers that are intricately involved in synaptic plasticity. Jessica Zhou joined Francesca Telese's lab as a PhD student where she worked on elucidating the effects of chronic cannabis use on memory and behavior in mice. She takes us through the fascinating correlation between THC and gene co-expression networks. Francesca and Jessicathen discuss the utilization of genetically diverse outbred rats in their research, along with the crucial exploration of cell type specificity in gene expression studies. They then delve into the long-term changes that occur in the brain after drug exposure and the profound implications for relapse. Additionally, they touch upon the challenges they face in analyzing single-cell data. References Zhou, J. L., de Guglielmo, G., Ho, A. J., Kallupi, M., Pokhrel, N., Li, H. R., Chitre, A. Lara McVicker and Heather Wiebe jump into the discussion to share their wisdom on how to support a bride as a bridesmaid during the wedding planning process by answering the following questions: How should we think about the role of being a bridesmaid? How can we honor God when we face the disappointment of expecting to be asked to be a bridesmaid and are not? How can you interact with the bride if you have certain convictions on modesty? How should we think about spending and how can we have those conversations with the bride if finances are tight? How can we point our friend to Christ throughout the logistics of the wedding planning process? How can we encourage the bride even when geographically far away? How can we practice rejoicing with those who rejoice when we ourselves long for marriage? smilingatthefuturepodcast@gmail.com Support $5 per month: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=62433637

Tyler McVicker has been utterly obsessed with Valve for more than a decade now, having reported on almost every scrap of news, speculation and datamined morsel to come out of this famously secretive company at the heart of the games industry.Having just published our own report on the reality of working at Valve, with its "flat" structure, no managers and no job titles, I wanted to talk to Tyler about the challenges that come with trying to understand such an unusual business. And one of those challenges, unfortunately, is dealing with the more toxic parts of Valve's community. PMG has faced its own share of that over the last couple of weeks."Because of the opaqueness, because there is a vacuum of information, misinformation becomes gospel. So what you're dealing with is a lot of individuals effectively treating Valve as if they are Gordan Freeman; a blank slate that you put your own personality onto. And when somebody else betrays that self-perceived personality, it almost feels like a parasocial relationship being destroyed."Support the show

She was born and raised in South Africa during the apartheid era and spent half of her life living in a system created to benefit her white body. When she was 16, she read a book that cracked open her all-white world and shattered so many of her belief systems. Since then she spent her life leaving the construct of whiteness, unlearning so much of what she had internalized to learn a new way of being human. In this conversation we talk about Idelette's journey out of whiteness that she shares in her new book: *RECOVERING RACISTS Dismantling White Supremacy and Reclaiming Our Humanity.” Please note, 90% of proceeds from this book go directly to BIPOC communities who have been harmed by racist systems of oppression.

In Tales of Forgotten Chicago, Richard Lindberg shines light on the many small folklore and big stories that make up the rich tapestry that is Chicago. In every engaging chapter gives new insight. We learn of the connection between SIU and the beginnings of the International Special Olympics, the time that John Wilkes Booth walked the stage of McVicker's Theater in downtown Chicago, the day the Beatles came to town, and best of all, who really was milking that famous cow when the Chicago fire began. Want to grow your personal brand on LinkedIn? Secure your spot in the September cohort here. Seating is limited! It is often said, "the riches are in the niches". So, why are so many people scared to niche down? Is it FOMO? Is it because you cannot scale a niche? What does it mean to even target a niche? In this session, Matt interviews Lucy Flinn, Sonya Ahola, and Brian McVicker to learn how to leverage your existing relationships and turn them into a niche where you can prosper. You will get real-world examples of companies that have leveraged the power of niches to create riches and how you can do the same. We recorded this episode live from the IPPA conference in Las Vegas on March 4th, 2022. Three Takeaways 1. To be successful, you must niche down and focus on a few target markets. You should focus on just a few because you cannot be an expert on everything. 2. Examine your customer base and determine which verticals are proving to be the most successful, and then focus on those. 3. One key success factor in niching down is the cross-business unit collaboration, particularly between marketing and sales, because both work very closely in identifying target personas and the ideal company profile. On today's podcast I chat with Suzan McVicker and Julia Sullivan. They are part of the Indigenous Elder IFS Council who spoke at the 2021 IFS Annual Conference. Here is their entire workshop on Youtube! (Thank you Sara Oberg!): The Spirit of the Circle: Indigenous Worldview IFS Resonance - YouTube ----- Suzan McVicker became an IFS trainer in 1999 when two year basic IFS trainings--as they were called them back then--were first offered. After joining several IFS training teams and teaching IFS in higher education, local seminars, community classes, and case consultation groups, she turned her attention to collaborating with Native American communities for mutual sharing of what IFS has to offer to Indigenous Peoples and what Indigenous traditions have to offer to the IFS community. Julia Sullivan is a Level 2 trained IFS practitioner (and PA "groupie" for Mary Kruger) who integrates Self leadership and Parts healing into everything she does. Drawing upon her spiritual practice in an indigenous community, 25-years in recovery, and an MBA from Stanford, Julia Co-founded the Indigenous Elder IFS Council to bring peer-based IFS healing that is easily accessible to anyone. Julia also leads the IFS in Business group that meets monthly over Zoom to share best practices in bringing IFS to business. Julia and her Level 1 trained husband Chris take daily walks around a beautiful lake where they deepen their love by speaking for their Parts and Self while basking in the beauty around, between, and within them. -------- 7 Bs of Indigenous-Inspired IFS: Blessing Right to Be, Belong, Become HumBle Belly Laugh EmBodied Learning Balance Ceremony as UnBurdening Dick's writing about Indigenous cultures and IFS: …it is becoming increasingly clear that the idea of the mind as unitary is a relatively recent invention of “civilized” society. Indigenous cultures throughout the world were familiar and comfortable not only with a spirit world, but also with an inner realm inhabited by many different voices and characters. It may be that the idea of the normal mind as multiple is less a radical departure from established knowledge than it is returning to an age-old wisdom from which “established knowledge” radically departed.
