The pandemic has changed how many people are celebrating Christmas this year, but one thing remains constant, and that's the joy of Christmas music. New England musician Dan Blakeslee has released a new album this month called "Christmas Jubilee " that has a mix of tradition and original songs. NHPR's Morning Edition Host Rick Ganley caught up with Blankslee to chat more about the album. ( Editor's note: We recommend listening to this story.) Rick Ganley: What makes you love Christmas music so much? Dan Blakeslee: You know, I mean, depending on what Christmas music you're listening to, but a lot of times it has this, like, joyous, celebratory tone to it. And ever since I was a little kid, my parents were always playing Christmas music throughout the season. And I have a vast Christmas record collection, about 225 strong right now and growing. Rick Ganley: This is not your first holiday album, Dan. Every October, you turned from Dan Blakeslee into Doctor Gasp for Halloween. Dan
Every October, the scares and screams of Halloween are difficult to escape. Ghouls, ghosts, witches, and demons haunt the streets, giving us a fright at every corner! However, the rough and tumble citizens of Cedar Hill, Texas ain't scared of no stinkin' skeletons and Frankensteins; they laugh in the face of vampires and werewolves, yessiree. Now, if you really want to get a bunch of evangelical Texans shakin' in their boots, you take them to a small rave, or introduce them to a gay person. And if you really want to freak them the fuck out, the mere notion of pre-marital sex will have them running in fear. In Hell House, these are the themes explored throughout a homemade, church-sanctioned haunted house that attracts tens of thousands of horrified guests per year. Try to be brave and join us as we re-enter the post-9/11 Bush era, where it's always the victim's fault and eternal damnation is the punishment! Tune in!

Despite some loss, heart of downtown continues to beat Source: https://www.turlockjournal.com/news/local/despite-some-loss-heart-downtown-continues-beat/ Since the coronavirus pandemic brought the world to a standstill in March, there has been plenty of movement in Turlock’s downtown core — from some longtime tenants who have closed down for good to out-of-town businesses making plans to open up shop. Despite recent economic setbacks both locally and nationwide, downtown Turlock has fared well since the pandemic began compared to past recessions. According to Assistant to the City Manager for Housing and Economic Development Maryn Pitt, the downtown vacancy rate was about 35 percent following the Great Recession. In the years that followed, a colorful revitalization took place complete with new boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops. While some businesses have closed due to the pandemic and rising rents, the progress made in the downtown core hasn’t been lost due to the shutdown. The vacancy rate is currently at about seven to 10 percent, and the City has taken measures to ensure businesses stand a chance at making it through the difficult climate. The weekly Downtown Turlock Street Vibe, which sees West Main Street closed between 1st Street and Broadway from Thursday to Sunday, has provided restaurants on that particular block to seat plenty of people outdoors. Throughout all of downtown, the City’s permits have allowed restaurants to get creative with their outdoor seating, utilizing sidewalks and creating ambience with lights and planter boxes. Commonwealth is currently working with architects to figure out a seating plan that can be safe and profitable during the pandemic. Though some businesses have been hit harder by the pandemic than others, different industries continue to support each other. New salon moves into Turlock Town Center Source: https://www.turlockjournal.com/news/local/new-salon-moves-turlock-town-center/ One of the newest tenants in the Turlock Town Center is a salon hoping to help everyone feel welcome — no matter their budget. Diamond Brows owner Maisa Safi opened her first salon in Salinas before moving to Turlock, where she has expanded her business to not only include the eyebrow services her longtime customers already know and love, but also other beauty necessities like hair, nail and pedicure appointments. Since opening on Sept. 5, Diamond Brows has provided these services to the community in a glammed-out space that helps customers feel welcome. Diamond Brows specializes in lash application as well as eyebrow threading, waxing and microblading — a semi-permanent makeup service that gives clients the illusion of full brows via small, tattooed strokes. While the procedure typically costs anywhere from $500 and up, Safi offers quality work — or as she likes to call it, “talent” — for a fraction of the price. It is Located at: 545 N Golden State Blvd., Turlock and open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday through Saturday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday; Closed Tuesdays. You can contact 209-250-2646 for more information. Winter Watering Schedule fast approaching Source: https://www.turlockjournal.com/news/government/winter-watering-schedule-fast-approaching/ With the season changing, the City’s Winter Watering Schedule will be in full effect starting Nov. 1. Make sure you reset your automatic sprinkler and irrigation timers to only turn on within the Winter Watering Schedule, which runs from Nov. 1 through Feb. 28. Even numbered addresses are allowed to water on Saturdays only and odd numbered addresses on Sundays only. No watering is allowed between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. The City of Turlock strongly encourages customer to turn off sprinkler systems during the fall and winter months. As a reminder, there is no watering during or within 48 hours after measurable rainfall. As a part of the Water Conservation Program, the City does enforce the watering schedule and issue warnings and penalties to those customers who waste water and water on non-watering days. Please do your part to help ‘Save Our Water’ and conserve this season. For more information contact, Municipal Services at (209) 668-55or visit the City of Turlock website at: www.CityofTurlock.org. Local market supports firefighters with shirt sales Source: https://www.turlockjournal.com/news/local/local-market-supports-firefighters-shirt-sales/ With many of the area’s normal fall fundraisers cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, one local grocery store is doing its part to continue with its giving ways. Every October for the past eight years, Oscar Avila and the crew at the Turlock Cost Less grocery store on W. Main Street have donned bright pink t-shirts in support of the Turlock Firefighters Local #2434 and their breast cancer fundraising campaign. The specially designed pink t-shirts have helped raise over $100,000 during the past several years for the Bill and Elsie Ahlem Cancer Endowment, which assists local community members with their cancer treatments. When Avila heard there would be no pink t-shirts this year, he decided to take things in his own hands. Cost Less has designed its own t-shirt, with the help of artistically inclined employee Timothy Brown, as a tribute to firefighters. The red shirts — not pink, as Avila didn’t want to infringe on the firefighters’ signature fundraiser color — read “We Appreciate Firefighters” and feature firefighter equipment such as a helmet, axe and hose. It is important for Avila to show support to the firefighters who “are having a very rough year” and at the same time raise some funds for their breast cancer campaign. The t-shirts can be purchased for $20 at Cost Less, 255 W. Main St. in Turlock. Battle of the Bobas: Turlock Welcomes Another Boba Shop Source: https://www.csusignal.com/food/article_edf13cb0-0f69-11eb-9b01-ffcb80eb0935.html As the city of Turlock continues to grow, residents and visitors have seen a steady increase of different businesses. One of the newest is a Boba shop called Kung Fu Tea. Kung Fu Tea will join Quickly, which has been open in Turlock for nearly three years, as premier boba spots. These shops are not only within a short distance from Stan State, they are also within walking distance of one another. Both businesses expressed their thoughts on the two shops being so near each other. The Kung Fu Tea staff said that they are aware of Quickly being just a couple doors down. Their goal is to provide more options for Stan State students and Turlock and having competitors would help both businesses improve on their drink quality and customer service. They are currently offering FiveStars rewards, which means that after 12 drinks purchased, the customer can get one free drink. They are prepared for the new customers coming in. You can’t go wrong with any of their drinks, it’s just based on what type of flavor you are interested in. Coronavirus update, Oct. 22: Stanislaus announces 394th death. Many small businesses in the area have been severely impacted, and some have gone under due to the temporary shut-down and subsequent lack of indoor eating accommodations. Others have still managed to survive by delivering or offering outdoor seating options. But if you are a local resident from Turlock, I bet you wish to be informed of the numerous tasty and affordable places to eat. Broken No MoreDomestic Violence can be bruises and black eyes or locking someone inside their house.Domestic violence affects millions, both women and men, of every race, religion, culture and status.Nearly three out of four Americans personally know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence. The Violence Against Women Act passed in 1994, was landmark legislation, led by then Senator Joe Biden, and held offenders accountable and provide programs and services for victims. While the rate of DV has dropped, there is still much work to do. Every October we raise awareness so victims don’t feel alone and they can get the support they need to break the cycle.Bianca Amos, host of the @oncebroken Podcast, shares her inspiring story of how she is broken no more on this episode of Happy Even After. What does the pandemic have to do with the surge in domestic violence?Being in a domestic violence situation is hard enough without the current state of events. Now more than ever, victims are suffering. We can blame the stay at home orders, the loss of jobs and even evictions to the higher rates. But, at the end of the day, would the numbers be there if the “situation” weren’t already present? October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Every October, we have a conversation about something that should be discussed daily. In fact, friend of the show, Donna Barnes, LPC discuss that very question. Why aren’t people talking about domestic violence in households where it doesn’t exist? We also talk about a few safety tips for the woman or man that wants to leave. Both of us share our personal stories, why a restraining order is a good thing and more! Following the news overview we will speak to a French author Lola Gruber, who is working on a book about the situation in Czechoslovakia during 1950s. Then we will meet hikers, who spend almost every weekend in the mountains. Every October they climb up the same hill: Choč. And in our sport news segment we will look back at the international football matches Slovakia played in the past week and hear from Erik Černák, recent Stanley Cup champion with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Every October, we try to go above and beyond the call of duty. For one of the most insane years in recent history, it only made sense to finally tackle another Italian horror master by the name of Lucio Fulci. I needed help with some very special returning guests by the names of Patrick Ripoll and Gabe Powers, both host their own shows on the Now Playing Network as well. It was difficult to narrow down our discussion to the main essentials but we do start out talking about his Giallo work with A LIZARD IN A WOMAN’S SKIN followed by what most consider to be his masterwork, THE BEYOND. Lots of other titles are of course mentioned along the way due to his extensive filmography. We also cover a few titles during the what we watched segment including THE WOLF OF SNOW HOLLOW, DR. JEKYLL AND SISTER HYDE, and WITCHTRAP. 00:00 - 06:19 - Introduction06:20 - 07:02 - What We Watched Song07:03 - 01:02:45 - What We Watched This Week01:02:46 - 01:04:01 - Director Song01:04:02 - 02:02:51 - A Lizard In A Woman’s Skin02:02:52 - 02:43:46 - The Beyond02:43:47 - 03:09:09 - Other Titles03:09:10 - 03:18:41 - Top 3 Fulci / Outro Patrick Bromley Ranks 21 Fulci Horror Films: https://bloody-disgusting.com/editorials/3550177/zombies-slashers-ghosts-extreme-gore-ranking-21-lucio-fulcis-horror-films/ Screen Drafts Picks The Top 7 Fulci Films:https://screendrafts.libsyn.com/lucio-fulci-with-elric-kane-rebekah-mckendry Supporting Characters Interviews Stephen Thrower:http://www.nowplayingnetwork.net/supportingcharacters/episode44 Genre Grinder Hosted By Gabe:https://www.genregrinder.com/ Tracks Of The Damned Hosted By Patrick:https://www.nowplayingnetwork.net/tracksofthedamned/s1e12
Welcome back to the Happy Half Hour! This week’s episode is our first international one, and our special guest is Fernando Perez Castro, the founder of La Lomita Winery and Finca la Carrodilla in Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California’s wine country. Fernando founded the winery in 2009, and it’s the first certified organic winery in the region. La Lomita’s Pagano grenache is on the wine list at the acclaimed The French Laundry. Fernando chatted with us virtually from his home in Ensenada. Every October, the region gears up for the Valle Food and Fest, which was started by chefs Javier Plascencia and Nancy Silverton, and food writer Carolina Carreño. Even though it launched only four years ago, the event has attracted celebrities and other big names in the food and wine industry. It was slated to commence this weekend, but canceled and postponed to 2021 because of the pandemic. Valle de Guadalupe is an emerging wine region. In recent years it’s received a lot of media coverage—Anthony Bourdain called it “Little Tuscany” when he visited—and it’s become increasingly popular with San Diegans and Angelenos. But there have barely been any tourists for months. Crossing the border for nonessential travel is still limited until the end of this month. How is our southern neighbor holding up? Unsurprisingly, Fernando says the valle has been hurting. He closed La Lomita’s tasting rooms, as well as Lunario—the winery’s new restaurant that had just opened last fall—for nearly four months. They managed to keep their employees on payroll, and have since been able to reopen at a limited capacity, but businesses are struggling. Fernando says they miss the regulars from Southern California who appreciate the valle and its vintners. During this episode, we also learned a lot about the ins and outs of exporting wine from the valle to California, that small businesses in Mexico don’t have access to any kind of government assistance, and what qualifies as an organic winery. In Hot Plates, we talked about the revamped Taste of Little Italy event, which starts October 4, and how it’s been tailored for takeout. Sam the Cooking Guy is launching a ghost kitchen, Eats by Sam, in Seaport Village with sandwiches and burgers available for delivery. Cali Dumpling, an LA-based company that delivers frozen handmade Chinese dumplings like wontons and xiao long bao, expanded to San Diego. Last, we want to help spread the word about a fundraiser for San Diego chef Anthony Sinsay: Anthony was diagnosed with cancer and is in need of funds for his medical treatment, because he was laid off from his executive chef position and no longer has health insurance. Please donate if you can. In Two People for Takeout / Two People for $50, Fernando gave us some great recommendations on where to eat around Baja: Via Torél in Valle de Guadalupe, carne asada at El Paisa in Ensenada, and the fish tacos at Tacos Corona in Ensenada, which was recently highlighted in Netflix’s Taco Chronicles. David’s pick this week is the mussels at Original 40 Brewing in North Park. Troy is on a quest to find the best ramen in San Diego, and he liked the ramen with roasted black garlic sauce at Nishiki in Hillcrest. I also had a ramen pick this week—the tantan ramen at Menya Ultra Ramen in Clairemont. Thank you for listening! As always, we want to hear from our listeners. Do you have a question for Troy? Need a recommendation for takeout? Is there a guest you want us to book on the show? Let us know! You can call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a voicemail, or if you’re too shy, you can email us at happyhalfhour@sdmag.com.
Every October the regional town of Bathurst becomes the centre of Australia's attention when the V8s take on Mount Panorama to compete in the Bathurst 1000. It's the quintessential Australian sporting event and our guest in profile for On The Record this episode won there an extraordinary six times. Mark Saife talks about winning on the mountain, being abused by passionate fans and talks about his near-death experience on the track in Adelaide.
Every October, BCRF-funded researchers are honored at the annual Symposium & Awards Luncheon in New York City. This is when BCRF makes its formal announcement of research grants for the upcoming year and recognizes its investigators for their devotion to ending breast cancer with their trailblazing scientific inquiry. The event provides a unique opportunity for BCRF researchers to convene, share ideas and collaborate with fellow colleagues from around the world. This year’s program began with a symposium featuring an expert panel of BCRF investigators. They discussed current breaking topics in breast cancer research, ranging from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and survivorship. We’re proud to share that discussion here in this special bonus podcast.

Every October, approximately 3.5 million high schoolers take the PSAT/NMSQT, but a significantly smaller percentage of the population understands exactly why! Amy and Mike invited test prep professional and author Brian Stewart to explain both the PSAT and the National Merit Scholarship. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What is the PSAT and why should a student take it? What is the National Merit Scholarship? How does the Selection Index differ from a PSAT or SAT score? Do colleges care about National Merit Scholarship recognition? How much scholarship is at stake through the PSAT? MEET OUR GUEST At the end of his first year teaching Social Studies at Dublin Jerome High School, company founder Brian Stewart thought it would make sense to do some part-time tutoring work over the summer. After all, he had done quite well on standardized tests when he was in high school and really enjoyed coming up with creative ways to explain challenging concepts to students. Other companies charged a fortune and didn’t seem to have a high-quality product. As Brian worked with more students, word spread about the quality of his tutoring services. He started to offer ACT and SAT test prep group classes, and worked with students from all over Central Ohio. In 2011, Brian left his day job to run BWS Education Consulting full time with his wife Caitlin. Applying the expertise from her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy, Caitlin has ensured that our teaching materials and methods make high-quality test preparation accessible to students of all backgrounds and ability levels. In 2012, Barron’s Educational Series contacted Brian about submitting samples of his writing as they conducted a national search for their next ACT book author. Brian was chosen to write Barron's ACT, and has gone on to write several ACT, SAT, and PSAT books with Barron's Educational Series. His books have sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide. In 2014, BWS Education expanded to have associate tutors who teach not only the ACT and SAT, but tutor students in math, science, and writing. Brian and Caitlin personally interview and train every tutor on our staff to ensure they are the best in the business. BWS is a team of committed educators who relentlessly look for the best way to deliver educational enrichment to our clients, whether it’s test prep, academic help, or college admission counseling. How was your week? Last Sep 23, 2017, 12 new graduates of The 90-Day Book Writing Challenge (BWC) launched their books. You should have seen how happy and proud their families and friends were. As of now, the registration to The 90-Day BWC is currently closed. If you have dreams to write your own book, you may join the wait list/notification list here. This week, I’d like to remind you to slow down. Funny because last week we talked about commitment, right? Yes, it’s important to be committed to our dreams and goals. But it’s also very important to be committed to our rest. I’m sharing this based from experience. Last Saturday, when I arrived at Meralco mini-theater for the book launch of the graduates of The 90-Day BWC, I felt so weak and exhausted, I cried. Walang masakit sakin. I was just so exhausted from my very hectic schedule the past few weeks that I had no energy to even stand up, walk up to people, and talk to them. I asked my friend Bryson to help me regain my energy through neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). My friend Faye (author Carlo’s wife) had to put an ointment on me so I’d feel better. Imagine, it’s the graduation and the book launch of my 90-Day BWC students and I couldn’t enjoy it because my spirit was willing but my body was so tired. It made me rethink, really. Wait a minute, am I overworking myself? (The good news is, I felt better after NLP and the ointment and everything went smoothly that afternoon! It was such a happy occasion for everyone!) If you were like me who is goal-oriented, I’d like to remind you to slow down. Be committed to your dreams and be committed to your rest as well. Do hustle, but do rest as well. Here’s how you can slow down. Learn to say NO. As Filipinos, it’s hard for us to say no, right? Hehe! Same with me. If someone asks to meet up with me or asks me to speak or do something, I’d do it. I’d gladly serve. I can hardly say NO. This week, I decided to say NO to some meetings and other engagements so I can say YES to my health and to the bigger roles God would ask me to do. I’m taking the entire week from Monday to Friday to rest, recharge, and regain my voice. I just hosted The Author’s Voice radio show this morning and it’s funny because I almost lost my voice. So slow down. Take a rest. Learn to say NO. I’d love to hear your thoughts. What will you say NO to this week so you can say YES to something more important? This week we present the Japanese fable "The Grateful Sparrow" (otherwise known as "The Tongue-Cut Sparrow" in a harsher version), a cautionary tale about greed and gratitude. We come to you from Pennsylvania, with our special guest star Libby, Zephyr's friend from the San Francisco Bay Area. A glutton for punishment, she's spending the entire month of October touring with us, to get a taste of the glamorous life. Amish Farm and HouseWe report on our visit to the Amish Farm and homestead in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a preserved two-story dwelling open for public tours. In the heart of a busy shopping and tourist district, the Amish attraction sits right smack next to a Target store. But step inside, and you quickly forget that you're in the Twenty-First Century. A knowledgeable guide explains the facts of the Amish lifestyle and answers your questions -- and there were some interesting questions from our inquisitive tour group. The 15-acre farm, which was opened for public tours in 1955, features a stone farmhouse built in 1803 and a one-room schoolhouse opened for tours last year. Field of Screams But the reason we were in Lancaster to begin with was so Zephyr and Libby could "work" (i.e. volunteer) at Field of Screams, which many consider the premiere haunted attraction in the country. (If you build it, they will scream.) Every October, this place comes alive with the sounds of ghouls and goblins and patrons getting their wits scared out of them. The complex features two haunted houses, a haunted hayride, and a special "Little Screamers" section for the younger ones. And it is, we can attest, an extremely popular place. Happy Listening, Dennis (narrator), Kimberly (wife), Zephyr (husband) and Libby (sparrow)
