Dublin Port has officially launched two new live stream cameras, offering near real-time views of Dublin Bay and Dublin City. The cameras provide the public with a unique insight into the daily operations of Ireland's busiest port - with some 1.6 million ferry passengers and trade worth €165bn (source IMDO) last year. On average, the Port sees some 15,000 ship movements per year in the Dublin Port shipping channel, which is now visible on the live streams. Since going live in beta mode in July, the live streams have been watched over 1.29 million times on YouTube, with viewers from 50 countries worldwide enjoying fascinating Port views set against the backdrop of Ringsend's iconic Poolbeg Chimneys, along with glimpses of the Great South Wall and Poolbeg Lighthouse. Meanwhile, the city-side stream overlooks the River Liffey with views of the Aviva Stadium and Dublin mountains with some of the local yacht and boat clubs in view alongside commercial shipping. The stream has already captured stunning sunrises over the Port, located within the UNESCO-designated Dublin Bay biosphere, as well as the movement of ships entering and leaving the harbour - showcasing the work of Dublin Port's marine teams and shipping lines - and even a meteor sighting in November 2024. During major weather events, avid weather watchers turned to the cameras with spikes seen during both Storm Darragh in December and Storm Eowyn, in January. Dublin Port is also exploring the possibility of providing live marine data and weather updates for viewers, along with introducing a third viewpoint from Poolbeg Lighthouse later this year. Dublin Port continues to open up the Port to the public, offering new ways for people to engage with its operations - even from a distance. Claire Percy, Head of External Affairs at Dublin Port, commented: "These live streams provide a real insight into our busy Port - the hardworking heart of Dublin. "No matter when you tune in, the Port is busy with activity on land and on the water, operating 24/7, 365 days a year. "Ships continuously move, delivering everyday essentials to Ireland and supporting Irish exporters. You might spot ferries, container vessels, bulk ships, and car carriers - all vital activity that often goes unnoticed by the public. "We have had great feedback from viewers so far, who have found the live stream cameras fascinating and even relaxing! Between the movements of the ships, cranes, water, weather and birds, there is always something to see. "Later in the year, the live stream cameras will also provide great views of the sailing regattas of our local yacht and boat clubs." Listener Week is when all the topics, interviews and discussions are chosen by YOU!As part of Listener Week we have been asked by widows to discuss one side effect of bereavement – hyper-arousal, and the term ‘Widow's Fire'. Nuala McGovern explores these ideas with listener Lizzie, Stacey Heale, who has written a book – Now is Not the Time for Flowers - about her experience of being widowed, and also by the psychotherapist Lucy Beresford, who can shed some light on what might be going on.DNA testing for family ancestry is becoming more popular, with some companies having millions of users. A listener we are calling Sarah wrote: ‘I would like to hear about non-paternity events. This is when you discover that a parent is not your biological parent often via a DNA test. I made this discovery in my fifties. Increasing we are hearing about the impact of these discoveries but until it happens to you it is incomprehensible to understand. I would like to hear these issues explored.' Nuala speaks to her and also to Laura House, genetic genealogist at Ancestry, and Lucy Beresford.A listener who tried decluttering and didn't like it asked us to look into 'the craze of removing any superfluous stuff in their house.' Nuala is joined by journalist Rebecca Reid and professional organiser Jenn Jordan to discuss if household streamlining has become an additional burden for women, or a helpful tool to stay on top of life admin. There is an iconic spot in Ireland called the Forty Foot and it's where people go to swim in Dublin Bay. If you watched the Apple TV series Bad Sisters, you might have seen it. But 50 years ago, women ‘weren't allowed' to swim there, so a group took to the waters in their bikinis – and had a less than welcome reaction from the men. Listener, journalist and feminist Rosita Sweetman suggested we discuss this on the programme. She joins Nuala, as does one of the women who mounted the invasion - activist, writer and poet, Mary Dorcey.

There are over 18,000 shipwrecks around the Irish coast. Bill O'Brien has been diving around the coast of Ireland and abroad all his life. He has vast knowledge and experience of many of the shipwrecks around the coast and shares some stories in this episode. During the 1st and 2nd, World Wars German U-boats constantly patrolled the Irish coast hunting for Allied shipping targets. Incredibly Donegal has the largest amount of U-Boats sunk anywhere in the world. Bill has dived these U-Boats and tells us about them. He has also dived the Aud off the Cork coast. The Aud was carrying a cargo of 20,000 rifles, 1,000,000 rounds of ammunition, 10 machine guns, and some explosives. These munitions were to aid the Irish rebels in the planned Rising set for Easter Sunday 23rd April 1916.  Rodger Casement procured these arms and ammunition for the proposed 1916 Easter rebellion in Ireland. We hear the story of the Aud and its importance in Irish history. Bill has dived the Auld and tells us what he has seen, found, and more. We also hear great stories from Dublin Bay, Hook Head, Egypt, and many more. Enjoy.

With Fiona being packed and shipped back to the motherland with no real issues... Other than a 24-hour delay due to presenting the wrong Covid test (It sounds like Ireland doesn't want her back; no worries, England and I will take the hit) I insisted before attempting to board that aborted flight we squeezed in an Irish themed episode so the show and listeners can mourn our collective two-week loss. 'Insert celebratory GIF'!  Upon reflection, I'm unsure if watching two homeless blokes addicted to heroin (Adam & Paul) mooch around the streets of Dublin was the correct tone-setter for the prodigal daughter's big return? Something abit more fun and feel-good like The Wind That Shakes the Barley, perhaps?... If you've ever had the misfortune of listening to 5 seconds of any Ben and Fiona-led episode, then you know that episode is long overdue.  We get into a semi-interesting conversation about our widely different experiences with the homeless - Fiona encountered and helped many through her job. On the other hand, my limited encounters culminate in attempts to give away Maccy D's food (unopened) I didn't need after devouring 40 nuggets and a big mac meal. A learning experience, certainly.  I heard someone say something along the lines of Adam & Paul is "the saddest funniest film you'll see."  I would urge everyone to seek out this "Bleak but beautiful experience".  Social Mediahttps://www.facebook.com/filmfloggershttps://www.instagram.com/filmfloggers/https://twitter.com/FilmFloggersWebsitehttps://filmfloggers.buzzsprout.comHelp Flog the Podcast by Leaving a Review! This week we have a slight change of pace and we're looking a major environmental issue, that is, the quality of water in Dublin Bay. I've had the pleasure of knowing Gerry Jones for many years and he's well known as a successful Investor, Chairman and Director, over a wide range of Technology businesses. But Gerry, through his personal interest and that of his family, and with a group of other concerned citizens, became involved in Citizen Activism after finding out about the poor quality of water in Dublin Bay. The story is very interesting, about how the group discovered flaws in the monitoring of water quality in Dublin Bay and that there is still a large amount of sewage flowing into the Bay during times of heavy rainfall. Gerry and the SOS Dublin Bay team are shining a spotlight on the problem and he updates us on what they have done, in terms of short terms fixes and also to help move the Political establishment and Authorities to focus on the issue. This podcast shows how concerned citizens can help make a difference to everyone's lives. https://sosdublinbay.ie   Music Credit:  Ennio Morricone,  John Flynn – “Star” --- This Podcast is sponsored by Nettzer – Digital First Selling  - www.nettzer.com  During these times of Covid and falling Telco Sales -   Digital First Selling is the answer to new Customer Acquisition, increasing revenues and cost reduction If you are a Telco, an MVNO, or an eSIM provider we have the ideal Digital First Selling-as-a-Service solution for you. In this weeks episode of Master My Garden podcast which is an open garden feature, I talk to Conall O’Caoimh from Ardán Garden in Howth Co.Dublin. Its a really interesting chat about Ardán Garden and how it is a series of different gardens within the main garden. Originally the garden was broken up with hedging to provide shelter from costal winds, but this breaking up or dividing also created garden rooms which could all be planted in different styles. Conall mentioned a book that inspired himself and Nuala in designing their garden and while the book wasn't accessible during the interview because it was being used to press flowers!! The name of it as promised is "The Essential Garden Book" by Terence Conran and Dan Pearson. Nuala Doherty and Conall O’CaoimhAddress: Ardán, Windgate Road, Howth, Co. DublinMobile: +353 87 972 4271E-mail: conall@europe.comWebsite: https://www.dublingardengroup.com/ardan/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ardangarden/Ardán is situated on half an acre (0.25Ha) of South-facing hillside in Howth (a hilly peninsula on the North side of Dublin Bay).Design is a response to the need for shelter from the coastal winds, so is broken into a series of spaces each planted in a singular style and evoking a different feeling. Meandering paths tempt the visitor in varied directions, each revealing another space, a different planting style and a change of mood. As you move from the house with its formal ‘hot’ and ‘cool’ herbaceous borders around the lawn, the design becomes more contemporary and the planting less formal. It includes a rock outcrop planted with alpines, water garden, vegetable garden, productive glasshouse and a small copse of trees underplanted with shade loving plants.Accessibility: includes steps and some gravel pathsEach area includes opportunities to sit and lingerThroughout the garden are spread unique ceramic sculptures hand-made by Conall in his home studio, and usually some are on sale to visitors. Songs, Stories, and Shenanigans Podcast

iIrish: Songs, Stories & Shenanigans, Podcast14: Roll Pride When you want to know, where to go, what to do, to be seen, to make a difference, you come here, to iIrish:the Truth & the Pulse of the Irish Just for a minute, we’re going to move From the Present to the Past, and roll forward: Let’s take a look at On This Day in Irish History: 10 October 1918 – was the sinking of RMS Leinster by German torpedoes. She was bound for Holyhead and went down just outside Dublin Bay. Over 500 people perished, mostly military personnel returning from leave – it was the greatest single loss of life in the Irish Sea. 11 October 1969 - Death of Louise Gavan Duffy, revolutionary, who founded Scoil Bhride, (Scull Bray School), the first all-Irish school for girls, in Dublin. 15 October 1945 - Death of Eoin Mac Neill, scholar and patriot, who co-founded the Gaelic League and was the Irish Volunteers Chief of Staff. Moving to the present: What’s the News, What’s the News? What’s the top news we have to talk about today: Guess what? This podcast is now available on iTunes! Subscribe, and listen to any of the podcasts, any time you wish. Did you pick up the October issue yet? Our cover features The Mighty Sweeney Clan, a legacy of public service four generations deep, from today’s State Senator Bride Sweeney, turning heads and drilling down to the things that really matter to her constituents, and then getting them done; to her father, former Cleveland City Councilman and State Senator Martin Sweeney; Marty’s sister, Fairview Park Councilwoman Maureen Sweeney; their  father, retired Judge Gerald Sweeney, and Gerry’s father, a State Representative in West Park, when the State Representative went by county. We include a nice Inner View profile of Bride inside. Speaking of Bride, our State Representative responded to a federal court’s last Saturday order requiring the Ohio Secretary of State to explain himself on why he has not allowed Cuyahoga County’s Board of Elections to move forward with its bipartisan unanimous plan to offer ballot drop off services at six library locations. A state appeals court late on Friday ruled that the law allows the secretary to install more drop boxes if he chooses, but the court declined to require him to do so. Also last week, the governor of Texas copied Ohio and ordered all drop box sites closed except for one in each county. Said Rep. Sweeney: “I am sad to see the residents of major American cities – like my hometown of Cleveland and now Houston and Dallas – used as pawns in a national GOP plan to cut off voting access. First, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose limited drop boxes to one per county and ordered Cuyahoga County to halt its unanimous bipartisan plan to accept ballots at six satellite locations. Now, the Texas GOP is following his lead and closing satellite ballot drop-off sites. Thankfully, a federal court is demanding answers here in Ohio. I hope Texans, like Ohioans, will make their voices heard and vote no matter what!” Representative Sweeney is a member of the House Democratic Caucus’ Elections Working Group assembled by Minority Leader Emilia Strong Sykes (of Akron) at the onset of the pandemic to deal with its impact on voters and voting rights. Rep. Sweeney is the youngest elected Democrat in the Ohio House and the first woman to represent her district in the chamber. In an update that went out Wednesday, additional boxes are permitted, at libraries, so we’ll be watching that closely. The Election is only 24 Days away.  One way to choose a candidate is to vote, in person.  Do Absentee, or mail-in, like I do.  Even tho the date to register to vote in has gone back and forth, at this point, it has now passed. We have only until the end of this month to complete the Census.  It is VITALLY important – why? For many reasons, including the mapping of the area a representative represents. Of course, the goal is to reduce gerrymandering – any honest person with ethics wants that, THAT’S a given.  No rigging of the districts to favor one party over another. It is part of the reason that I am an independent; I vote people, and performance, not party.  But the number of people in a district dictate how much money that district gets.  Every person that district represents is equal to $1200 in money for that district. If you want to be an influencer, you must be counted. Complete the Census to make a difference right in your own community. Visit 2020Census.gov.  I did mine when the Census first began, and Honest to God, it took less than 3 minutes; it was so simple to do.  Another way we make a difference, of course, is to vote.  The presidential and vice-presidential debates were designed to help us with making the decision of who we wanted to vote for. Debates are a contest of ideas for people to vote on, who most aligns with what we believe, desire, and need, for a successful life.  They were never designed to be who can be the loudest, or the most immature. Did you know 73 million ppl watched the last presidential debate, on October 1st. 11% of Voters are undecided – that may be enough to turn an election. According to Repub Pollster Frank Luntz - The Debate convinced some voters to not vote at all. We have not had a variety of backgrounds representative of the United States serve as president, even tho we are officially 244 years old. Of course, Barack Obama was the first and only Black American president. John F. Kennedy was the 1st, and only Catholic president. Catholics are the largest denomination in the United States – Joe Biden would be only 2nd Catholic President and Kamala Harris would be the 1st POC American Vice President, if they should win. I was reading up on candidates across my voting area.  We have extensive advertising in the OhioIANews from both republicans and democrats, and occasionally, an Independent.  The Democratic nominee's Irish ancestors have a LOT of similarities to my own story.  I am 1st Generation, and deeply immersed in the Irish American community, so perhaps it is more crystalized for me, more present, meaningful and with similar values forged through our lives, past and present.  Joe Biden’s family left Ireland in the 1800s; 220 years later, Vice President Biden has never shied away from his Irish roots. He knows they were formative to who he is today. VP Biden penned a letter to Ancestry.com the day before he left for Ireland in 2016, which is the source sent on to me. This was as the country was celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Easter Rising. VP Biden “spoke to how the seismic event put Ireland on a path to independence” in his open letter. He also visited Kilmainham Gaol - where the leaders of the rising were executed - during his 2016 visit. I’d like to read you a bit, of what spoke to me: “Biden, who is thought to be five-eighths Irish, said ahead of the official 2016 six-day visit that being Irish has "shaped his entire life." He visited places in Louth, Mayo, and Meath, where his ancestors emigrated from.    He also said, “We celebrate our shared heritage. Our shared values of tolerance. Diversity. Inclusiveness. And it’s a trip I’m so deeply grateful to be taking alongside my children and grandchildren… "Over the course of my life, I’ve been to a lot of places. I’ve traveled all around the world – more than a million miles on Air Force Two alone. I’ve been honored to have held a lot of titles. But I have always been and will always be the son of Kitty Finnegan. The grandson of Geraldine Finnegan from St. Paul’s Parish in Scranton; a proud descendant of the Finnegan’s of Ireland’s County Louth. The great-grandson of a man named Edward Francis Blewitt, whose roots stem from Ballina, a small town in Ireland’s County Mayo – sister city to my hometown in Scranton, Pennsylvania. An engineer with a poet’s heart. Months after my mother passed away, I found an old box of his poems in my attic. "In his poetry, my great-grandfather spoke of both continents, and how his heart and his soul drew from the old and the new. And most of all, he was proud. He was proud of his ancestors. He was proud of his blood. He was proud of his city. He was proud of his state, his country. But most of all – he was proud of his family. "And that is America: This notion that home is where your character is etched. As Americans, we all hail from many homes. Somewhere along the line, someone in our lineage arrived on our shores, filled with hope. We are blessed to experience that simultaneous pride in where we’ve found ourselves, while never forgetting our roots. "James Joyce wrote, 'When I die, Dublin will be written on my heart.' "Well, Northeast Pennsylvania will be written on my heart. But Ireland will be written on my soul.” You can read the whole letter on Ancestry.com, or probably find it with a google search. What else is going on? Well Pro Football is back and has really done a remarkable job in having so few COVID infections. Their well-coordinated plan, and action, shows what can be done, with planning and collaboration. I have really enjoyed watching the NFL so far – of course, because the Browns are 3-1, after 2 decades of mostly futility, and 2 years of complete futility. Pro football is definitely my favorite sport to watch, and to play. I enjoy watching Joe Burrow play for Cinci – he’s a baller for sure. Pittsburgh is its’ usual powerhouse and Baltimore is an AFC favorite; the Browns only loss this year. KC is the Superbowl favorite, with today’s GOAT, Patrick Mahomes. I do wish we could be like the NFL, with few infections, and quality treatment. The rest of America, and the world, are not so fortunate as our football heroes, or president.  207,000 of our countrymen are dead.  Almost 1 MILLION have died worldwide at this writing. In Ohio, 159,964 have been infected. The number of deaths is 4,931. We mourn them; we pray for no resurgence, and the end of the scourge that is COVID-19. I believe in God, the father Almighty, creator of Heaven and earth… is the beginning of a catholic prayer called The Apostle’s Creed.  We are all apostles of one level or another, one sort or another. No matter your spiritual beliefs, I believe in you. Whether you believe similarly or not, I wish you good health. We are All brothers and sisters – this land is your land; this land is my land. The only race that matters in life or death, is the human race, with no divisions. And yes, perhaps the race to find a vaccine that works, to save us all. You will find more great stories in this issue, including A Tale for Samhain, and Happy Halloween Kid’s Craic, Cleveland Irish Cops n Robbers, a profile of Columbus Man of Impact Mike Mentel, a history lesson on the 1stBloody Sunday, and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th too; An Irish History Contest, News for the GAA, Safe home to Pat Car and Patrick Sweeney and a sad story of a beloved priest, who drowned in a boating accident.   Of course, you will find food recipes, humor, book reviews, Irish Dance news, our monthly Speak Irish Lesson, Irish Crossword Puzzle, a few Opinion pieces and so much more.   We always have so many milestones to celebrate: To read these stories and more, pick up the issue in person or read it online, at OhioIANews.com. I’d like to share one of David’s stories. Given the season, I choose Kilkenny man “James Hoban, the White House Visionary” (p 92). Lotsa serious stuff this month, this year, this decade, or two. We are into our 7th month of holding COVID-19 off.  It tried to end our run, but must not have realized what our community is made of. Let’s end this podcast with a little humor:  These Wise Craics make me laugh:   Irish craic explained - the six levels of craic you can reach, from @IrishCentral Jun 02, 2017 Craic is the Irish word that most confuses outsiders, yet it is a relatively simple concept. It is the atmosphere, fun, carry on surrounding a particular night out. ”How was the craic?” is the first question uppermost in most young Irish minds after a weekend. Here’s the encyclopedia definition: "Craic" is a term for news, gossip, fun, entertainment, and enjoyable conversation, particularly prominent in Ireland. It is often used with the definite article – the craic, such as, What’s the craic? So now that you have a grasp on what craic is, here is all the different kinds of craic (as if you weren't confused enough!): Good craic: A fairly ok night out, fun but nothing too amazing. Mighty craic: Better than good craic, not quite at the highest level, someone did some crazy stuff maybe. Savage craic: Almost there, great night all together, everyone on top firm, Guinness flowing, great jokes. Deadly craic: A step above savage but not quit the Everest moment. The craic was ninety: The nirvana of craic, everything was amazing, incredible, everyone hooked up, the pints were great. No one quite sure how the word ninety came into it--a famous Christy Moore song “The craic was ninety in the Isle of Man” maybe: Or perhaps, as good friend Shay Clarke explains, the Craic was 90, and we’re going after the other 10. And lastly! Minus craic: That’s when a night goes wrong and essentially, you’d have had more fun in a mausoleum. *** Support for this iIrish Songs, Stories and Shenanigans Podcast comes from WHKRadio and the Ohio Irish American News. In 1852, Sarah Maria Louisa Kirwan was found dead at the Long Hole on Ireland's Eye as the tide receded. Her husband, William, had been painting a sunset scene of the Dublin Mountains and told the boatmen who returned to get them from the craggy island in Dublin Bay that he had no idea what had happened to her. An inquest found that the poor woman had drowned. But in Victorian Dublin, rumours spread quickly, and it was discovered William Burke Kirwan was living a double life - one that provided a motive for murder. “We’re all emigrants, and if you embrace that emigrant edge, you can have a ‘rags to riches’ story in whatever area of your life you wish to focus on.” — Brian Buffini According to Forbes Magazine, forty percent of the largest companies in the U.S. were founded by immigrants or their children, including Google, Technichron and even our own Buffini & Company. Brian Buffini has studied the “rags to riches” stories of other emigrants and found there are seven traits among people who have arrived in America with nothing and went on to achieve success. In this episode, Brian outlines each of the seven traits that all successful emigrants share and offers examples of business leaders who embody the characteristic. You’ll learn about the natural advantages and disadvantages of being an emigrant, why they view opportunity differently than others, and how to incorporate the seven traits into your life and business. This is an episode you’ll want to listen to again and again.   Inspirational quotes from today’s interview: “For 150 years, Ireland’s greatest export has been its people.” — Brian Buffini “If you want to change your life, you have to move from one place to another. In order to grow at all, you have to make a decision as if you’re leaving one place to go to another.” — Brian Buffini “As soon as you start to pursue a dream, everything wakes up and everything has meaning.” — Barbara Sher in I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was: How to Discover What You Really Want and How to Get It “There’s a divine beauty in learning. Others have been here before me and I walk in their footsteps.” — Elie Wiesel “When you’re an emigrant, everything is an opportunity, and you see opportunity everywhere.” — Brian Buffini “Eat the meat and then go after the marrow and the bones.” — Brian Buffini. “A man, as a general rule, owes very little to what he is born with—a man is what he makes of himself.” — Alexander Graham Bell “All growth depends on activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work.”— Calvin Coolidge “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.” — Cicero “When you start the day with the spirit of gratitude, everything else in your day works.” — Brian Buffini “We pinch ourselves every day that this is what we get to do for a living.” — Jay Wright, Head Coach at Villanova “The brave may not live forever, but the cautious don’t live at all.” — Sir Richard Branson “The ability to discipline yourself and delay gratification in the short term, in order to enjoy greater rewards in the long term, is the indispensable prerequisite for success.” — Brian Tracy “If you do what is easy, your life will be hard; but if you do what is hard, your life will be easy.” — Les Brown “Keep perspective of how far they’ve come. In order to appreciate a mountaintop you have to remember what the valley looks like.” — Brian Buffini “Somebody in your life came before you and fought so you could live your life. Someone in your lineage, that you don’t even know, somebody in your life paid a price to give you a better opportunity—what would they do with your opportunity?” — Brian Buffini “At the end of the day we’re all emigrants, and if you embrace that emigrant edge, you can have a “rags to riches” story in whatever area of your life you wish to focus on.” — Brian Buffini   Emigrant stories, people and other things mentioned in the episode: Vivek Ranadivé, owner of the Sacramento Kings NBA team Madeleine Albright, 64thS. Secretary of State Sergey Brin, founder of Google Peter Petrasek, who along with his wife left all their money to the U.S. Department of Treasury Jay Wright, head coach for Villanova University’s men’s basketball team The painting “An Emigrant Ship, Dublin Bay at Sunset” by the artist Edwin Hayes Lou Holtz Tommy Hopkins Zig Ziglar Lou Tice Stephen Covey Og Mandino Jim Rohn Alexander Graham Bell Calvin Coolidge Cicero Sir Richard Branson Brian Tracy Les Brown   Connect with Brian Buffini http://www.brianbuffini.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brianbuffini Twitter: https://twitter.com/brianbuffini Buffini Show Insiders: http://www.thebrianbuffinishow.com/insiders Love what you heard? Recorded at the Verbal Arts Centre in Londonderry/City of Derry, James Naughtie and readers talk to one of Ireland's finest writers - Jennifer Johnston. Now in her eighties, Jennifer has been called 'The Quiet Woman' of Irish literature. Her distinguished career has spanned more than 40 years and has netted the Whitbread Prize among her many awards. Her books are taught on the Irish school curriculum and in American Universities. The chosen novel for this edition of Bookclub is one of her later ones, The Gingerbread Woman. Like many of her novels, this story deals with personal conflict, as two characters meet by chance one day on a cliff top overlooking Dublin Bay and form an uneasy friendship. Yet the conflict between these two mirrors a bigger question - the conflict between the North and South of Ireland. Jennifer Johnston is a writer who watches and listens. She's best known for her portrayal of different Irelands, notably the group called the Anglo-Irish, who appear in what became known as The Big House novels. More recently she has moved her protagonists out of the countryside and into the affluent suburbs. Jennifer grew up in a theatrical house - her father Denis was the leading playwright of his day and her mother Shelah an actress. Jennifer describes how her literary upbringing has resonated through her writing, and how much she enjoys writing dialogue. As always on Bookclub, a group of readers join the author in the discussion and James Naughtie chairs the programme. May's Bookclub choice : 'Be Near Me' by Andrew O'Hagan. Producer : Dymphna Flynn.
