What is the minimum number of nuclear-powered submarines you need for a viable capability? At the moment all 6 UK SSNs are tied up at Faslane. The outcome of AIR 6500 Phase 1 has been decided – and Lockheed Marin are the worthy winner. However, this seems contrary to the DSR recommendation in favour of an off-the-shelf solution, so what else will be ignored? Is MQ-28A Ghost Bat under threat? Then the story of how big, brave RAAF officers at a basic flying training school in Tamworth locked their doors and hid under their desks rather than speak with three visiting Australian journalists. By comparison, senior US government and military figures routinely make themselves available to the media – and we learn far more from them than from our own people about what the heck is actually going on. In today's episode Elaine chats with award-winning theatre maker, writer, facilitator and all round powerhouse Jenna Watt. We discuss Jenna's path into the industry, the feeling that you can't get into the room and how that pushes you to create your own work, writing her first long form nonfiction novel and why having a space for everyone to feel heard with grace is vital. Jenna's book Hindsight is available in all bookstores. https://www.waterstones.com/book/hindsight/jenna-watt/9781780277455 Jenna Watt Jenna is a multi award-winning Scottish theatre maker. In 2018 she was recipient of Magnetic North's Artist's Attachment. In 2019, in addition to her theatre degree, she gained an MSc in Sustainable Rural Development and her practice now encompasses the exploration of interdependent relationships between performance, sustainability, rewilding, ecological grief and ecofeminism. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Bruce Kent (1929–2022), published by Gavin on June 10, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Tank officer, Catholic monsignor, head of the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament 1980-1985. In 1973, while serving as a Catholic priest, Bruce Kent performed a formal exorcism of the Faslane nuclear submarine base. (No uploads of the photos unfortunately.) Kent strikes me as a model activist of a certain kind - highly invested in symbolism, in consciousness raising - a single issue politician - an agent in great stories and fine speeches. Clearly a good person. But to what end? During his tenure at CND, membership increased tenfold - mostly due to the coming of Trident and the associated massive spending. "This made it one of the largest political organisations in Britain and probably the largest peace movement in the world (outside the state-sponsored movements of the communist bloc)." He was famous, famous enough that someone sent him a letter bomb. Wikipedia claims that he was forced to resign from the priesthood for being too political, though this doesn't match his own description of events. He also signed on to Compassion in World Farming, why not. Two cheers CND was the first mass movement against x-risk. (Currently our best guess is that nuclear x-risk is relatively small, but this isn't obvious now and was far from obvious then.) But it's not enough to have the right cause: you need to get the intervention right too. CND are most famous for pushing unilateral disarmament for the UK. Insofar as this push has a theory of change, it's something like inspiring other countries to unilaterally disarm (moving the world to a Kantian equilbrium). On the face of it, this is unlikely to work; nonviolent protest only works if your opponents have scruples and/or if the opinion of the world matters to them. Some part of the push will be the classic desire for clean hands, rather than a real plan to reduce x-risk. (He's been called a useful idiot, but this doesn't seem fair either.) "Peace, not war". Well, yes. It would be nice if moving in a straight line, leading by example were the way to get there, and I don't know that it isn't, but trying it is very hazardous. Misc It's always difficult to evaluate impact. But the direct action and consciousness raising groups are the worst, because they won't even make up numbers for what they've done, besides the odd headcount at a march. I've spent 20 minutes trying to work out what Pax Christi, one of his other organisations, do. I think it's meetings. I haven't tried to look at CND's impact through direct action, for instance (before Kent's time) their exposing the emergency backup plan for post-apocalyptic UK government. Which seems pretty bad! But in general I think direct action has a place and I hope someone does a full accounting. "Bruce's razor-sharp intellect, together with his humour, tireless work, intolerance of flannel, and total commitment to his faith and principles, made him a leader of our movement beyond compare" (I have learned a new sense of flannel, though I liked it better when I misread it.) HMCS Windsor (877) / Victoria-class submarineThe former HMS Unicorn was laid up by the Royal Navy in October 1994. She was accepted by Canada and named Windsor on July 5, 2001, and sailed from Faslane on October 8 to arrive in Halifax on October 19, 2001. Her training program in 2002 was interrupted on March 28 by what proved to be a minor flooding while submerged, but the extent of required repairs led to the decision to begin her Canadianization Work Period early. During the course of this refit she was commissioned in Halifax on October 4, 2003. She returned to sea on April 5, 2004, and for the remainder of the year conducted trials and training exercises. In June 2005, Windsor commenced the first operational cycle for her class, lasting through December 2006. In this period, she participated in a number of international exercises, including the successful tracking of a United States Navy nuclear-powered attack submarine and assisting in the work-ups of a USN carrier battle group. In Canadian waters, Windsor participated in the first-ever parachute rendezvous at sea practiced with Canada's Patrol Pathfinders (Canadian Army paratroopers), and also conducted several sovereignty patrols off the east coast for intelligence-gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance.Windsor entered an Extended Docking Work Period (EDWP) at the Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Scott in Halifax on January 15, 2007, which was completed on November 30, 2012. In the ensuing operational cycle, Windsor spent a total of 174 days at sea before being docked in March 2014 to repair a defective diesel generator.#GaleForceWins New episodes every Tuesday evening on Youtube or wherever you get your podcasts.New episodes every Tuesday evening on Youtube or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also visit https://galeforcewins.com/ To message Gerry visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gerrycarew/ To message Allan visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/allanadale/

In this episode of Scotland's Choice, Drew is joined by Ann Ballinger of the Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and Brendan O'Hara MP, whose constituency includes Faslane and Coulport, as they discuss the nuclear weapons housed in Scotland by Westminster and their decision to break the nonproliferation treaty, which has stopped the nuclear arms race, by vowing to increase the number of Warheads at the Clyde bases. Ann and Brendan lay out the dangers of nuclear weapons, the safety failures, the worrying plans to downgrade fire protection, and, crucially, what an Independent Scotland could use its part of the estimated up £205bn on instead. The sums involved could be invested in housing, hospitals, schools, teachers, nurses, investing in our economy, and a green recovery. We'll also hear how even a change of Westminster Government makes no difference as the Labour Party describe their own commitment to these weapons of mass destruction as "unshakeable". The Jag story for example was from about 1977, we had been to Faslane for a holiday with friends Bob and Kaye. The car was running so well and almost home, instead of turning off at Markham Moor island and going home through Lincoln we decided to keep on the A1 and turn at Newark. It was an excellent stretch of road, all dual carriageway, on through Tuxford and down to Newark by Sutton on Trent and Cromwell. The whole of that memorable journey, that old car cruised at 125mph. It could have been a Sunday evening and we were both due for work on the  Monday. The road was empty, hardly anything in either direction for the whole distance. It was during the time when speed limits had been introduced because of the oil crisis as prices were rising and inflation had arrived, never to go away!We had done our bit all the way from Glasgow, so for 20 miles or so we let her have a burn up!
