Ronson, who wrote the 2011 bestseller The Psychopath Test, also explores how social media rewards those with an empathy bypass, and looks at the rise of public shaming. Speaking with Good Weekend senior writer Konrad Marshall, he also makes a case for non-fiction writers like himself avoiding the temptation of fudging the truth - and the importance of humour in writing.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Manchurian candidates, programmed assassins, manufactured mercenaries, secret government programs, and a careful systematic assault being waged on the human psyche... As Jon Ronson wrote in his book, 'The Psychopath Test': "Suddenly, madness was everywhere, and I was determined to learn about the impact it had on the way society evolves...psychopaths make the world go round...society is an expression of that particular sort of madness...I've always believed society to be a fundamentally rational thing, but what if it isn't? I'm a huge fan of Jon Ronson. I've been following his work for around 25 years now, and when I wrote a short piece here recently plugging his upcoming Wellington gig, I could never have believed I might get to actually talk with him. First of all, I couldn't believe my luck that he was coming to NZ. I was trying to work out how to afford a trip to Melbourne…Anyway, this podcast episode — my first ‘proper' podcast chat in a year, finds me rusty, but eager. And hoping from here to be able to do this a bit more often, and via this Substack medium (but you can still find the podcast in all the usual places like Spotify, Amazon, Apple, etc). We talked about his show that he's bringing to Wellington. His only NZ show, and his first time in the country. He told me he's got a day to look around and is eager to hit up one of the wildlife sanctuaries, such as Zealandia. We also talked about how he's knee-deep in a new book, his first proper book project in a decade. Recent years have seen a focus on podcasts, and audiobooks, his brilliant Things Fell Apart series is well worth your time. We talked about The Psychopath Test, the book he wrote over a decade ago, which is the basis for his live shows; we talked Trump (related), and his recent encounter seeing Bruce Springsteen, as well as archival stories about Randy Newman, Malcolm Gladwell, and, um, Robbie Williams…Look, I just can't believe this happened. There's a handful of times in my life, after all that putting up with people calling me an arsehole for not liking their favourite band, where I can say at least I got to speak with absolute heroes of mine. Sonny Rollins. Suzanne Vega. Lionel Richie. George Benson. And now Jon Ronson. It makes it all worthwhile really. Here we are just chatting. He seems really nice. I seem — correctly — fanboy/ish and way-too-eager. But I believe in sharing. I believe in Publish and Be Damned. And I don't really think I exactly fucked this up. In fact, I feel like we were getting on really well…am I allowed to say that?Anyway, can't wait for the show. And here's a return-episode of Sweetman Podcast which you can listen to right here, right now, or through your preferred podcast platform. Thanks for listening. Jon Ronson is a journalistic hero of mine, as he is to many.. He was one of the first people to write about the culture wars, well before the phrase became commonplace in our news cycles. His two audio series exploring real-life origin stories from these everyday battles ‘Things Fell Apart' (BBC Sounds) have been a huge commercial and critical success. Ronson has written a handful of fascinating works of non-fiction including ‘Them: Adventures with Extremists'; ‘The Psychopath Test' and ‘So You'Ve Been Publicly Shamed' and his book ‘The Men Who Stare at Goats' was made into a feature film starring George Clooney, Ewan McGregor and Jeff Bridges. We explore Jon's love of storytelling, what being bullied at school taught him, why truth-telling is vital and whether he will ever regret his solitary nature. Plus: why (according to him) he sucks at screenwriting despite having been portrayed by two Star Wars actors. Oh, and his deadly professional rivalry with Louis Theroux… Season 2 of Things Fell Apart is available now on BBC Sounds And as always, I'd LOVE to hear about your failures. Every week, my guest and I choose a selection to read out and answer on our special subscription offering, Failing with Friends. Speakers have included Elon Musk on artificial intelligence, Bill Gates on how to prevent future pandemics and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on how to create a better future for women and girls. Anderson has a new book, Infectious Generosity, which draws from some of those learnings, in order to spread a bit more of an idea in short supply in recent years – optimism. Psychopathy is no longer a diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as of the third edition. Rather the diagnosis would be antisocial personality disorder with psychopathic traits. These psychopathic traits are characterised by “a lack of anxiety or fear and by a bold interpersonal style that may mask maladaptive behaviours”, e.g. not adjusting adequately or appropriately to certain environments or situations. Psychopathic traits are assessed using a variety of measurement tools, most famously Robert D. Hare's Psychopathy Checklist (PCL-R), brought to the mainstream by author Jon Ronson in his book The Psychopath Test. Dr Hare's checklist is a list of 20 traits which the assessed is scored on a three-point scale, for example, item 6 is lack of remorse or guilt and the recipient is assessed, giving a grade of 0 for no match, 1 for a partial match or 2 for a good match. If someone scores above 30 on the checklist, they are considered to have psychopathic traits, for instance, serial killer/serial rapist Ted Bundy was evaluated at 39/40. If you're a fan of The Unspeakable, you're almost certainly a fan of Jon Ronson. When it comes to the subject of ruinous humiliation via mobs (online or otherwise) Jon's 2015 bestselling book So You've Been Publicly Shamed is both a field guide and a sacred text. His 2017 podcast The Butterfly Effect, looked at the downstream effects of the pornogrpahy industry. It also circled around a theme that arises frequently in his work; the way a single moment or seemingly random choice by just one person can result in a massive cultural or political shift. Last year, in collaboration with the BBC, Jon created the podcast Things Fell Apart, an eight-part series telling the origin stories of some of our most contentious cultural battles, including the right to abortion, book banning in schools, and the mania known as the satantic pre-school panic. In this interview, Jon talks with Meghan about that podcast as well as his thoughts about “cancel culture” seven years since the release of So You've Been Publicly Shamed. He reveals what parts of the culture wars he's still afraid to take on, why the Rachel Dolezal story felt like a missed opportunity for a meaningful examination of race, and why he got so burnt out on the whole subject a few years ago and had to take a break.  Paid subscribers to The Unsepakable's new Substack page can hear a bonus version of this episode containing lots of extra content. Before that came two Audible Original audio series, The Butterfly Effect (2017) and The Last Days of August (2019). Both went straight to number one in the U.S. and U.K. audiobook charts and were named by multiple critics as two of the best podcasts of recent years.

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 3, 2021 129:11

This episode of Skeptically Curious features the second interview with Dr. Kent Kiehl, one of the foremost contemporary experts on psychopathy, and author of The Psychopath Whisperer. This exceptional book recounts Dr. Kiehl's illustrious career while also serving as a lucid guide to the latest research on psychopathy. The first interview focused primarily on that book, while this episode moves well beyond its ambit. I began by asking Dr. Kiehl whether it is rare to find psychopaths drawn from higher socio-economic echelons, as was the case with someone dubbed Brendan in his book. We then took a plunge into the ever-knotty thickets of the free will debate, a detour during which such names as Sam Harris, Robert Sapolsky, and Daniel Dennett were evoked. Probably the lion's share of our discussion revolved around the inexhaustibly fascinating subject of serial killers, both real and imagined. I instigated this part of our conversation by asking my guest whether it is safe to assume that while not all psychopaths are serial killers, all serial killers should be classified as psychopaths. The answer is surprisingly not so straightforward. One of America's most notorious serial killers, Ted Bundy, helped to stoke Dr. Kiehl's interest in psychopathy as this infamous murderer was born a few blocks from his childhood home in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Kiehl discussed other real-life killers including Jeffrey Dahmer, the Green River Killer, incidentally also from Washington State, and BTK. I could not resist asking my strikingly credentialed interlocutor about the accuracy of some famed fictional figures, such as Hannibal Lector and Dexter Morgan. I even asked Dr. Kiehl to cast a verdict on the potential veracity of my own as-yet-unpublished foray into the realm of imaginary serial murderers. After hearing his answer, I probably have some serious re-writing to do. We then discussed some of the popular books on psychopathy published around the same time as The Psychopath Whisperer, including Kevin Dutton's The Wisdom of Psychopaths and Jon Ronson's book, The Psychopath Test, which Dr. Kiehl described as basically a work of fiction, and a very irresponsible one at that. Instead, Dr. Kiehl urged listeners to rely on academics who have published in peer-reviewed journals for reliable information on psychopathy, including Adrian Raine, James Blair, Joe Newman, and, of course, Robert Hare. We ended on a more hopeful note by discussing possible treatment options for psychopathy. The most promising development in this regard is probably the Mendota Juvenile Treatment Centre in Madison, Wisconsin, which employs a decompression model to positively reinforce good behaviour. Dr. Kiehl writes about this in some detail in The Psychopath Whisperer and still enthusiastically praises its considerable success in comparison to other juvenile programmes. The impressive results suggest if troubled individuals are identified early in life and enough time and resources are spent to re-shape their behaviour, it is possible to prevent them from developing into clinically diagnosed psychopaths. "Psychopaths are disturbing and morbidly fascinating, there is a reason why there are so many true crime shows and podcasts. As far as the book goes, Jon Ronson weaves a beautiful narrative, there can be no doubt about it. His books are just plain fun due to his style and witty observations. He is also excellent at raising intriguing questions but doesn't spend a lot of actually answering them, so not a book for someone who likes to deep dive into a topic."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world.
