Let Me Be Frank | Bishop Frank Caggiano's Podcast | Diocese of Bridgeport, CT
You gotta see this… In something brand new for Let Me Be Frank, we recorded the show live in front of an audience at St Mary Church in Greenwich! “What do you want to talk about?” I asked Bishop Caggiano before we started rolling the cameras. “Let's see what the people in the audience have on their minds,” he smiled. And so this week's episode is audience questions (and follow ups). We talked about: …why do pastors have term limits? …how do we get families of children in CCD to be more active? …how do we revitalize our Catholic schools? …how can we pray the rosary better? …can you help me forgive someone who continues to hurt me? I'm sure you'll enjoy this episode… and please join us for the next live audience session on Friday, May 30th at St Rose of Lima in Newtown!
Controversies in Church History returns to its ongoing series on the Latinization of the Eastern Churches. The tenth installment deals with the trials of the Armenian Catholic Church, which faced persecution within the Ottoman Empire but also suspicion from Rome, which led to a brief schism in the 1870s. Along the way we discuss the wider context of the Ottoman Empire, Vatican I and the calamity of the Armenian Genocide during WWI. Please spread the word about the podcast if you like what you hear. Scottie reeve: Peace, Pax Romana vs Pax Christi - 8 December 2024 by Blueprint Church
Patrick has a profound discussion about the sacred bonds of marriage and the divine role of Mary as the spouse of the Holy Spirit. He distinguishes doctrines from customs in the Catholic faith, highlighting their significance and divine origin. For an insightful dive into this theological topic, he recommends exploring Pope John Paul II's encyclical, Redemptoris Mater. Mary - What do you know about the group called Pax Christi?
“I think there's a major concern for living more in harmony with creation, which is a result of conversion,” says Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv., “But I think Pope Francis is also, as our good shepherd, calling us to greater urgency to act because time is slipping away and we haven't done much.” Bishop John Stowe is a Conventional Franciscan, the third bishop of Lexington, Kentucky and the bishop president of Pax Christi. Hey everyone! This is new Short, a preview of the latest patron only episode for everyone else. This is from Episode IV of our series on Latinization, which is on Rome's relationship with Eastern Christians in the Ottoman Empire between 1450 and 1800. In this clip, I discuss the relationship between Rome and the Maronite Church of Lebanon during the late 16th century, and how both sides sought to gain from their relationship, but which contributed to Latinization of the Maronites in the long run. The full episode will be available to all listeners at months end, but if you want to listen to it now (and free of ads), consider becoming a patron of the podcast. Hey everyone! This is a new feature I will be using going forward. I provide early access to certain episodes to my supporters on Patreon, in particular the episodes in my longer ongoing series. After a month, I drop the episode for everyone. So, to give non-subscribers a sneak preview, I am going to share clips of the full episodes before they drop, to give you a sense of what's going on. The current series is on the topic of Latinization, how Rome "latinized" or otherwise made Eastern Churches in communion with her adopt Latin liturgical and disciplinary customs. This clip is from Episode III of that series, a primer for the Early Modern Period. In it, I discuss Pope Benedict XIV, a scholar and pontiff of the 18th century who wrote an encyclical on the Eastern Rites in communion with Rome called Allatae Sunt (1755). The clip focuses on his contention that, barring any question of orthodoxy (which popes have a natural right to investigate), Eastern Christians in communion with the Holy See ought to keep and celebrate their own rites and not be "Latinized" by missionaries. You can hear the full discussion of this episode later in the month, or you can go to Controversies in Church History's patreon account to get access now. Thanks to all of my listeners as always. In this re-recording of a lecture given in early 2020, I take a look at the Gregorian Reform movement, a medieval movement that sought to reform the Christian world with the papacy as its champion. Beginning with monastic reforms in the tenth century, a series of reforming monks and clergy sought to free the Church from lay control while reforming the behavior of the clergy. When one of their number became Pope Gregory VII in 1073, the stage was set for a clash with the Holy Roman Emperor, as the reformers exalted papal authority in a bid to reform not only the Church itself but the entire Christian world.

In 1899, pope Leo XIII wrote a letter to Cardinal Gibbons of Baltimore, condemning something called "Americanism." Many contemporary Catholic historians and scholars have claimed that "Americanism" is a phantom, a term of abuse by "conservative" Catholics hurled at their opponents. In this episode, we will talk about what "Americanism" is and and isn't, the American Church in the 19th century, and why pope Leo XIII condemned the ideas associated with the term "Americanism." Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Bruce Kent (1929–2022), published by Gavin on June 10, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Tank officer, Catholic monsignor, head of the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament 1980-1985. In 1973, while serving as a Catholic priest, Bruce Kent performed a formal exorcism of the Faslane nuclear submarine base. (No uploads of the photos unfortunately.) Kent strikes me as a model activist of a certain kind - highly invested in symbolism, in consciousness raising - a single issue politician - an agent in great stories and fine speeches. Clearly a good person. But to what end? During his tenure at CND, membership increased tenfold - mostly due to the coming of Trident and the associated massive spending. "This made it one of the largest political organisations in Britain and probably the largest peace movement in the world (outside the state-sponsored movements of the communist bloc)." He was famous, famous enough that someone sent him a letter bomb. Wikipedia claims that he was forced to resign from the priesthood for being too political, though this doesn't match his own description of events. He also signed on to Compassion in World Farming, why not. Two cheers CND was the first mass movement against x-risk. (Currently our best guess is that nuclear x-risk is relatively small, but this isn't obvious now and was far from obvious then.) But it's not enough to have the right cause: you need to get the intervention right too. CND are most famous for pushing unilateral disarmament for the UK. Insofar as this push has a theory of change, it's something like inspiring other countries to unilaterally disarm (moving the world to a Kantian equilbrium). On the face of it, this is unlikely to work; nonviolent protest only works if your opponents have scruples and/or if the opinion of the world matters to them. Some part of the push will be the classic desire for clean hands, rather than a real plan to reduce x-risk. (He's been called a useful idiot, but this doesn't seem fair either.) "Peace, not war". Well, yes. It would be nice if moving in a straight line, leading by example were the way to get there, and I don't know that it isn't, but trying it is very hazardous. Misc It's always difficult to evaluate impact. But the direct action and consciousness raising groups are the worst, because they won't even make up numbers for what they've done, besides the odd headcount at a march. I've spent 20 minutes trying to work out what Pax Christi, one of his other organisations, do. I think it's meetings. I haven't tried to look at CND's impact through direct action, for instance (before Kent's time) their exposing the emergency backup plan for post-apocalyptic UK government. Which seems pretty bad! But in general I think direct action has a place and I hope someone does a full accounting. "Bruce's razor-sharp intellect, together with his humour, tireless work, intolerance of flannel, and total commitment to his faith and principles, made him a leader of our movement beyond compare" (I have learned a new sense of flannel, though I liked it better when I misread it.) Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org.
Join MJ and Jerry as they share stories and learnings about teaching skills and tools to disarm heal our hearts, connect within and with others, and turn from violence to wellness and peacemaking. From MJ and Jerry's interview: “My mom was an activist and took me to Dr. King's marches and movements. But my dad said, what do you two want? And I said, Dad, you know, we want peace. And he said, how are you going to make it happen? When he said that, I said, Dad, you're right. If we want peace, we have to teach peace.” “One little boy said, MJ, you're not going to live very long. And I said, why? And he said, well, you don't like guns. And there's a lot of bad people out there. And right away, I thought, wow, this is the stirrings. We need to equip people with the tools, the instruments, so to speak. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. I asked myself this question okay, how am I going to teach peace? What's it going to be? And Jerry was such a supporter of let's go for it together. Let's be like Dr. King said, it takes more creativity to make peace than war.” “We started peace camp… Kids are coming home with positive language. They're saying let's be a peacemaker, not a peace breaker; they're loving the peace train…there is no violence; it's run on love. Then we got into tools for peace and not weapons of war.” “We would go and hang out and Jerry helped start a garden. They were having cookouts. We would just join. So it wasn't like we were bringing, but they also taught me. Some of the youth would say, MJ, if you take away our guns or our weapons you need to give us, replace them with something. And that really struck me. So, I have felt empowered that if we're gonna interrupt violence, we have to replace them with tools … tell them how to use it. Because of the fear, and especially now in this culture, when violence has been so on the uptick, we have pivoted to more focusing on social, emotional wellness. Because we know that the violence is coming out of lost connections and feeling that I don't count or I've lost my heart, my root, my centeredness.” “We need to own that if we want peace, we have to work for it, give it space, give it a spotlight so that it will elevate the courage. At peace camp, the kids of all ages feel safety. They'll say, oh, I like it here. And I say why? And they say, because people are nice and you're like, well, shouldn't that be the way of the world? But that's not what we're all experiencing. So I don't like the phrase now anti-bullying or, you know, banners saying compassion, mindfulness, all those code words, because I feel like we have to really own that it takes focus and work.” “The circle was healing because it's a listening time, trying to share not only our struggles, but our good times and also our dreams…. When Black Lives Matter broke out during the pandemic, I kept saying, if we keep shouting at each other and becoming more and more divided, when we come together how can we listen and share? So we started these circles and providing a safe place for people to become self-aware, but also aware of what another person is going through or what is causing them to think a certain way.” “The littleness in Little Friends For Peace, is definitely that "littleness" of St. Francis. Your lifestyle and your vision, your approach to people, how it disarms violence in people's hearts and in fact their whole sense of walking lightly on the face of our Mother Earth…. It's our little way of trying to make a little difference in a big world, but it's the how to find joy in the little things and the smile and the kind word and the listening that will interrupt violence…. We are going to have to keep disarming our own heart and finding ways to build those connections.” For a full transcript, please include episode number and email: fslfpodcast@fslf.org. Sr Teresia Wamuyu Wachira, a Kenyan Loretto sister, Co-President of Pax Christi International, and peace and justice advocate makes a passionate call for peace in the world. She calls for an end to the wars in Ukraine, Ethiopia-Tigray, Ituri in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and many other senseless wars going on in Africa and many parts of the world. She invites world leaders and governments in Africa to reduce their investment in arms and weapons of mass destruction, and invest in the education of their citizens, health, food production, environmental protection, and promotion of democracy, dialogue, and civic engagement. She invites us to embrace non-violence as the best approach to conflict resolution because violence and wars do not solve any problems. Her message of peace in this conversation is quite compelling and inspirational.
