Fielding Edlow is a stand-up comedian, writer, and creator/star of award-winning digital series Bitter Homes and Gardens. She has performed stand-up at Edinburgh, Leicester, Boston Comedy Festival and hosted her sold-out cult show Eat Pray Fuck for 6 years at the Hollywood Improv. She voiced the “Roxie” on Bojack Horseman including a slew of other characters (but was politely asked not to do “accents”) Her first solo show, Coke-Free J.A.P. had two sold-out runs in LA before being developed as a half-hour pilot at Showtime. Her plays have been produced/workshopped with Naked Angels, New York Stage & Film, Comedy Central Stage, IAMA, and Circle X Theatre. She's currently on a very haphazard international tour for her latest solo show Gaslighting is My Love Language. Many podcasters have decided that the road to success lies in the discussion of controversial and taboo topics. But does it? Indeed, Meghan Daum is not afraid to talk about the “unspeakable”, including her own challenges with monetizing her podcast. In this episode Mike and Eric review "The Unspeakable Podcast" where Meghan conducts candid, free-ranging interviews with artists, entertainers, journalists, scientists, scholars, and anyone else who's willing to do the “unspeakable” and question prevailing cultural and moral assumptions. If you choose to name your podcast “The Unspeakable” (or something similar), how controversial must your content be? Can you occasionally stray from this? Is the contentious element clearly obvious to the listener? If you decide to interview two guests at once, do you understand why and how these two guests will both add value to the discussion you're trying to have? If you have a deeper and longer history with one of the guests, does this imbalance affect the interview? These questions and more are discussed in this podcast which is worth a listen particularly to see how engaged Meghan gets with her guests, and if this interaction could be improved upon. For this review we will focus on Meghan's November 1, 2021 episode: Bitter Homes and Gardens: Larry Clarke and Fielding Edlow on Staying Afloat, Staying in Love, and Staying Insured in Hollywood. This episode can be found here: https://www.theunspeakablepodcast.com/podcast/episode/2fc511a9/bitter-homes-and-gardens-larry-clarke-and-fielding-edlow-on-staying-afloat-staying-in-love-and-staying-insured-in-hollywood We also talk about Meghan's struggles with monetization and how much we enjoyed her very candid self-reflection in this episode: https://www.theunspeakablepodcast.com/podcast/episode/e5dcaeef/why-this-show-is-a-failure-a-song-of-joy-and-peace

Anything you see. Anything you hear.Mike Mattison, the two-time Grammy award winning singer, songwriter for the Tedeschi Trucks Band and the Derek Trucks Band knows the blues.  As a singer, composer, author and student of blues music Mike guides us along the many routes in which the blues meets the outdoors. The effect of the blues and how it's been impacted by the landscape has been profound. Mike says that the honesty of the blues is what makes us ourselves. And that anyone with an understanding of that, with humility, can come to the blues. Mike talks about growing up in the extreme seasons of Minnesota. He remembers playing hockey where games weren't cancelled until the temps reached 15 below zero. But he appreciates it and how our parents and friends were simply in it, even embraced it, without much complaint. The Lake Was Our Playground. Michael also remembers how our time outdoors, especially on Lake Vermilion in northern Minnesota was foundational in his childhood. From exploring the lake in the motor boat as a child to seeing bald eagles and osprety to this day, he continues to share the extraordinary experiences of this landscape today with his family. Finally, Micheal and Eric Suarez have written a book that comes out in mid-November. It's called Poetic Song Verse, Blues Based Popular Music and Poetry. INTRODUCING "ONE NEW THING"This new segment is designed to inspire YOU to get out there and try one new thing in the outdoors. This episode I talk with Larry Clark about health, hiking, biking and his one new thing. Larry is a talented actor, writer and director and his show Bitter Homes and Gardens created by he and his wife Fielding Edlow is available on YouTube. In Greenwood, on Main Street are two wonderful restaurants, Fan and Johnny's and Tasty Sipz where you can eat anything from hot wings to Fried Alligator Comeback. 3 minutes from there is an unnamed park along the Yalobusha River which is part of the greater Yazoo and Mississippi River Delta. 31 miles away is the Tallatchie National Wildlife Refuge, a critical stopping point for migratory birds.  Less than 3 hours away, 116 miles is the Bienville National Forest with large expansive woods and waterways for boating, fishing and camping.DJ Shark is back and we discuss the song Nutbush City Limits by Ike and Tina Turner. This little town in Tennessee is where Tina Turner grew up and this song dovetails perfectly with our wonder guide's reflections on the blues and the history of the south. There's No Planet B. Steven Donziger is a federal prison as we speak. This gross miscarriage of justice must be overturned. Please go to the Free Donziger website to learn about this case and take action.

This week Meghan welcomes guests Larry Clarke and Fielding Edlow. They are actors/writers/producers and also the married couple behind the YouTube series Bitter Homes and Gardens, a comedy, doled in out short episodes, about a married couple named . . Larry and Fielding. This edition of The Unspeakable is a bit of an experiment in that it's the audio version of a conversation recorded for The Unspeakeasy, the video series that lives on the podcast's new YouTube channel. Even though Larry and Fielding have solid industry careers going decades, they are emblematic of the way working actors have had to shift gears to accommodate a new creative economy, all the while remaining in nonstop hustle mode. In this conversation, they talk about their show, their marriage, their health insurance struggles, and the tension between loving their work and being frustrated with the turn their industry has taken. They also reveal that Larry and Meghan were roommates in New York City back in the 1990s. Moreover, the other roommate was a struggling actor and comedian named Stephanie Courtney who is now (wait for it . . . ) Flo from Progressive. They talk about Stephanie's guest appearances on Bitter Homes and Gardens and reminisce about the old days when Larry and Stephanie worked as cater waiters and Meghan slept in the dining room of the grimy New York apartment that's now a co-op they could never afford. Guest Bios: Fielding Edlow is a writer/comedian/actress who is the creator and star of Bitter Homes and Gardens with her real life husband Larry Clarke. Her debut special “Can't Say Slut” is now streaming on Amazon Prime and she voiced the character “Roxie” on the Netflix series Bojack Horseman. Larry Clarke has been a steadily working character actor for the last thirty years. He has frequently collaborated with Steven Soderbergh and most recently played Meryl Streep's lawyer in The Laundromat. He's currently shooting a recurring on the new Starz series HEELS and also played a “Fusco brother” in the latest Twin Peaks.

Fielding has a very funny show based on her life and marriage to actor Larry Clarke called Bitter Homes & Gardens https://www.youtube.com/c/BitterHomes. She's a talented comic, actress and writer who is pretty fearless in talking about stuff that most people don't share, but all people think and feel. In a time that's all about positivity and saying the right things, doing comedy about the petty stuff you don't like in your relationship, is hysterical and actually could promote some resilience. Ok, I'll stop talking ike a therapist, because I'm getting nauseas. In short, I'm a fan. In this episode, Jennifer shares relationship skills and when a behavior with your partner bugs you asking the question “What is going on in me that is either causing that behavior or making that behavior worse?” This is not to say that there aren't abusive relationships and that not everyone should stay together in something that isn't working. Just looking at what goes on in me, rather than immediately reacting about what's wrong with the other person. Little internal questions (which sounds like a Hulu series) can be big. Andy Haynes is a very funny stand up comic and writer who was selected for the New Faces Showcase at Just For Laughs.  He has also appeared on Jimmy Fallon and written for several television shows.  I just saw him tape a set for Comedy Central and found his brand of mid-life bewilderment so funny and all too relatable. I was introduced to him by Fielding Edlow who has been such a great supporter of this podcast, and he shares some funny stories here and a great and classic understanding of his higher power.   You can support this podcast at my Patreon Page:   https://www.patreon.com/thedrunkalogues

Raised in financial privilege but emotional poverty, the actor/writer/standup reflects on her "don't give a fuck" eating disorder, drug and alcohol years trying to stuff the real feelings of abandonment, not being good enough, anxiety, anger and feeling invisible especially in comparison to her golden-child brother. She gets honest about the "self-centered demon inside me" that drove her actions until sobering up almost 20 years ago and learning to deal with her insecurities, fears and anger by connecting to trusted people in support groups and trying to be of service. Writer, actor and stand-up comedian Fielding Edlow may claim she didn't get anywhere in her 20s but she's more than made up for it since: after her solo show Coke-Free J.A.P. killed at the NYC Fringe Festival, it was developed as a half-hour pilot for Showtime. Her plays have been finalists with the O'Neill Playwrights Conference, Actors Theatre of Louisville and City Theatre. She voices the recurring character ‘Roxie' on BoJack Horseman and just created and starred in her web series Bitter Homes and Gardens. And there's more! She has a monthly stand-up show—Eat, Pray, Fuck—the third Friday of every month (alas, at the same time and date as the AfterParty storytelling show, which means she can never perform in ours). Now over 18 years sober and a happily married mother, the former New Yorker seems to be something not many people can claim: content. In this episode, we discuss how recovery is like peeling an artichoke and not an onion, the idyllic early years of sobriety and whether or not it's cheesy and awful to talk to your inner child, among many other topics.
