Ali Afshar is the founder of ESX Entertainment. He races hot rods, he has been an actor, and he has built a sound stage in a barn in his home town, Petaluma, near Napa Valley where his company shot "California Christmas," in production during the Covid quarantines. Ali has built a company with a select and close group of friends who have all become busy producers, composers, directors and DPs. He has cast friends too- one woman he met as a waitress and now she stars in their newest Netflix romantic comedy. Many of his crew and team have met their romantic partners too- marriages have taken place on their studio lot up North. "All our movies are American Dream Movies," says Ali. One of his financiers, the CEO of Lucas Oil, coined the phrase "Shed a tear, but leave with a smile." That's ESX's mantra and MO, but Ali says their movies are more PG than G, with more edge. Ali's company offices are on the Warner Bros. lot and he's produced movies that have been licensed by Netflix and HBO Max, and he's also in development of a TV series that he says is like Yellowstone with a Latin bent, "Casa Grande." Ali is originally from Iran, and his mother passed when he was young. So his main advice to this podcast, Passion to Power listeners, is "don't wait," do what you love and don't do it for money...the money will come. Sounds like the mantra for Passion to Power. Still racing and collecting "muscle cars," and making movies and doing the occasional acting role keeps Ali very busy. He is grateful and his team seems to work like a well-oiled machine- he ought to know. Television and film actor David Del Rio joins us this week to chat all about the new Hulu comedy series “Maggie”, which follows a young psychic who, for the first time, sees herself in a glimpse of the future when she meets David's character Ben. David shares how he and his co-star Rebecca Rittenhouse prioritized their on-screen chemistry as they developed their characters, his experience filming yet another series during the pandemic, and how Latin TV legends like John Leguizamo made him feel represented growing up Speaking on working with his co-star Rebecca, he shared, “When you're working with someone like Rebecca it's really easy. It's all about having fun and understanding the balance between how much you lean into each other, and how you back away from each other so you can give the audience a good, healthy ‘will they, won't they' scenario.” He also spoke on how fortunate he feels to have been part of so many feel-good projects like ABC's Baker and the Beauty, Netflix's A California Christmas and now with Maggie during the past two years that were particularly challenging for the entertainment industry. “We all realized how lucky we are to do this and how lucky we are that we're all still safe to do this,” he said. “We thought ‘well, we don't know if we'll be back next year, so let's just have fun!' There was a big cloud of gratefulness over our set.” Season one of "Maggie" is now streaming on Hulu.

Need TV binge suggestions? You've come to the right place. We've got you covered. Crossing the Streams originated on this podcast in episodes 8 and 15. Jeff Dwoskin, Howard Rosner, Ron Lippitt, Bob Philips, and Sal Demilio are your co-hosts and we're joined weekly by special guests. The assignment? We each come to the show with a TV binge suggestion. It might be a series, movie, or documentary but we'll give you the scoop so you can decide for yourself whether or not to dive in. In this bonus episode we discuss a few great Xmas movie binges: My Dad's Christmas Date (from live ep 51) Elf (from live ep 4) California Christmas (from live ep 4) Each segment is pulled from a show and shared as is in all its LIVE goodness. Well, it was bound to happen eventually. Friends don't have to agree on everything, right? Right. And this week, despite all the things we agree on wholeheartedly, my good friend NJ Rongner and I have very different opinions about a holiday movie. And you know what? It's okay! Totally okay. NJ is a woman of many hats. She works full time as a sales and marketing coach at Clickfunnels and is the founder of Working Christian Mom. She loves coffee, Jesus and Gilmore Girls. And for some reason, which she tries to explain to us today, she loves the California Christmas movies on Netflix. Of course, because this is The Couch, where rabbit trails and side notes are always welcome, we don't stick to just holiday movies. We also talk about old and new musicals, an upcoming movie, and one of my favorite topics, movie night. It's a fun episode, and I'm glad you decided to join us. Let's get started! Matt and Merry review a popular Christmas movie from last year called A California Christmas. We are flabbergasted as to how this movie is so popular. It even has a sequel! Even the mouse in our house stopped watching 30 minutes in, and he loves cheesy things. The only thing we can think of is that the protagonist is a soap opera star who removes his shirt often, and the love interest wears daisy dukes, even when working in s@#$ stompers. A brave fashion choice. This is proof of how low a bar Christmas movies have to clear in order to get made.
Josh Swickard, the actor who plays Detective Harrison Chase on “General Hospital,” discusses how he learned the lesson that joy is a choice, how his Christian faith was shaped by his grandfather throughout his life, but most recently through Bible studies they did together over FaceTime, what it was like working with his wife Lauren on their hit Netflix movie "A California Christmas," and how he follows God's call to love, not judge, others.Host: Tony Rossi

Lauren is an actress, writer and producer who has written and sold multiple original screenplays throughout her short but impressive professional career. Most recently, she created, wrote, produced, and starred in A California Christmas, one of a small handful of feature films to start and complete production during the pandemic. You can find this movie as well as her movie Roped on Netflix. What is of importance to us today is that Lauren is a breastfeeding mom, and she talks to us about the challenges women in the movie industry are faced with when wanting to breastfeed when returning on set. Lauren was lucky in her journey as she produced the movie she starred in and it allowed her to add “mommy time”, aka pumping time, into the schedule. Throughout the interview she makes it a point to remind us that this is not common and that the industry is not set up to allow most females in different roles on set to do the same. This interview showed me even more how there are still many industries that are not set up to support breastfeeding mothers and I am so thankful to Lauren for being on our show, sharing her experience and spreading the awareness. On today's episode, Tony chats with Actress, Writer, and Producer Lauren Swickard about the difficulties of typecasting, the nature of Social Media, and creating our own content in today's industry. Actress, writer and producer Lauren Swickard has written and sold multiple original screenplays throughout her short but impressive professional career. Most recently, she created, wrote, produced and starred in A California Christmas, one of a small handful of feature films to start and complete production in the midst of the pandemic. The film is in post-production and is slotted for broad release in December, 2020 as a Netflix Original. Lauren's most recent endeavor is lead writer and producer for Casa Grande - an episodic series she created that is scheduled for distribution in January, 2021. The narrative explores the dramatic truths of our country's allure to immigrants and illustrates what mankind will endure in pursuit of the American dream. A Cincinnati native, Lauren excelled in the arts at a young age. Her artistic talent stems from her early years in musical theatre, pre-professional ballet, and studies at The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. Lauren also attended the prestigious School of American Ballet and she has performed on the professional stage with the Cincinnati Ballet Company. Lauren pulls from more than seven years and 40+ credits of screen acting experience, performing roles on feature films, award winning short films, and television series in drama and comedy. She began her professional acting career in high school with a small role on the TV Movie, "Shelter," working with JJ Abrams. Now represented by Powerline Entertainment, she can be seen in Netflix's "Dear White People," "Roped" and countless projects currently airing on the Lifetime Movie Network, the Syfy channel, and Amazon Prime.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! This episode we took a break from the usual Virgin River podcast and made a special Christmas episode. We decided to try our hand at another Netflix original and this time one of their Christmas specials. Suffice to say Liz and Caroline bashed A California Christmas for being anything but a Christmas movie. We honestly couldn't believe it was on the top 10 list of most popular movies on Netflix when we watched it. This was however, a fun and festive time for all! We hope you all have a wonderful and safe holiday season and here's to hoping your 2021 is exponentially better than 2020!

Just a few more days until Christmas so Graham and Dane couldn't help but review another shitty xmas movie! This time it's A California Christmas (2020).

Halloween might seem like the spookiest time of the year but Charles Dickens, M. R. James, Edith Wharton, and other literary greats felt otherwise. They were among the many authors who set their most terrifying stories during the dark and chilly days of Christmastime. Reading a ghost story on Christmas Eve was once as much a part of traditional holiday festivities as turkey, eggnog, mistletoe, and Saint Nick. On this episode we share a submitted holiday ghost tale from one of our listeners as we dive into the lost tradition of sharing ghost tales during Christmas accompanied with a few California Christmas ghost tales.

Join us this week as we welcome guitarist, singer songwriter, producer, and Hollywood guitar coach, Carlos Calvo. Carlos injects Alternative Folk/Pop with something it has been missing: virtuoso guitar playing. His original music features his warm, resonant voice, deep and thoughtful lyrics, accompanied by guitar playing that elegantly mixes genres from Blues to Flamenco and everything in between. Carlos grew up surrounded by world-famous flamenco and classical guitarists. He was formally trained at Carnegie Hall to play Bach and Barrios, but has been equally influenced by The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Rolling Stones. Before embarking on his solo career, Carlos fronted successful bands that toured with Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Willie Porter. As a solo artist, he has toured with The Bacon Brothers and Colin Hay and numerous times in Europe as a headliner. He played guitar on the score of King of the Hill for three seasons and has placed original songs in major motion pictures (She’s All That, Finding Holden). Carlos has taught the likes of Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, David Duchovny, Rob Morrow (Northern Exposure, People Vs OJ Simpson), Marg Helgenberger (CSI, Under The Dome) and Ambyr Childers (Ray Donovan). He was a consultant during the entire run of Californication. He’s a product spokesman for Bugera amps & TC Electronic and just released his first ever Christmas song last week "California Christmas". We will talk to Carlos about his upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at his music, feature his latest songs, and ask him to share his message for the troops. Please be sure to visit Carlos Calvo at http://carloscalvo.com/ and spread the word. Fans are welcome to call in and speak live with Carlos during the show (718) 766-4193. Our message to the troops: WE do what we do, because YOU do what you do.
