In their historic* first loss to the Utah Hockey Club (*for Utah, not Dallas), Ryan and Chris break down what happens when your penalty kill forgets to show up — and so does your defense. With Esa Lindell, Thomas Harley, and Jake Oettinger all resting up for the postseason, the Stars treated this game like the second preseason it truly was. We dive into Matt Dumba somehow being the best defenseman on the ice (yes, really), Brendan Smith scoring a feel-good goal, and Jamie Benn continuing his cursed pursuit of #400. Plus: thoughts on Liam Bischel's nerves, Petrovic's audition, and why the penalty kill was MIA. The Avalanche are locked in for Round 1. Landeskog is lurking. Sagan and Miro might return. Oh, and the flu is sweeping the locker room... great timing, boys. So if you're wondering whether the Stars are ready for the playoffs — well — join us as we try to find out. The Dallas Stars fell 6-4 to the Columbus Blue Jackets in a game where defense was clearly optional. Ryan and James break down the biggest issues, from brutal defensive breakdowns to missed opportunities on the power play. Did Jake Oettinger get left out to dry, or is he in a slump? How did the Stars let Columbus dominate the offensive zone? Jason Robertson was a man possessed, but was it enough? Mikael Granlund continues to impress, but Brendan Smith and the blue line struggled big time. Plus, we discuss the impact of playing three games in four nights and what the Stars need to fix ASAP. We also debate whether Otter should have been pulled, why the power play let the team down, and whether the Stars need to call up reinforcements from Texas. JOIN THE Who CARES Club! From 'Spits & Suds' (subscribe here): The Stars scored 6 goals in the first period and completely dominated the Pittsburgh Penguins 7-1. Host Gavin Spittle talks about how they needed this bounceback game and they delivered. They have to keep the winning going and get ready for a quality opponent in the Minnesota Wild this Saturday. Gavin gives a stick tap to Pete DeBoer for a healthy scratch to Matt Dumba and started Brendan Smith. Logan Stankoven is eligible to be rookie of the year this season because he didn't play in enough regular season games last year.
In this episode, I pull back the curtain on one of my own formal communities: the Toastmasters.Today's guest is Brendan Smith, a member of the Toastmasters chapter I was part of. Toastmasters is an international speaking club and educational organization, and for four years, Brendan and I met with the group every Thursday: sometimes online, sometimes in person; sometimes as presenters, sometimes as listeners. We all shared a common goal – to become better communicators and speakers – but there was an underlying benefit, too. You get to know people in a formal community. Over time, you develop a feeling of belonging to it.Since talking with Brendan, I have to admit, I did not renew my Toastmasters membership. I was not able to invest in it the way I felt I should have due to work and health stuff I've been going through. And though it's not a part of my weekly schedule anymore, I have such fond memories of the Toastmasters. It will always be a valuable part of my story and community. In this episode you'll hear about:What a formal community is and the importance of its regularity, from its structure to its shared goalsWhat it was like joining Toastmasters with Brendan early COVID and what our club looked like: the variety of members of different ages, careers, and backgroundsThe importance of discomfort, shared experiences, and informal interactions in building a strong formal communityWhat we learn when we're experiencing things with people – or talking with them “side-by-side” instead of face-to-faceResources & LinksLike what you hear? This is our FIRST race spotlight for a race that takes place outside of the US. This race is the largest trail race, the largest ultra, and the oldest ultra in Canada. And, as of May 2024, the first ever Western States Qualifying race based out of Ontario. The Sulphur Springs Trail race takes place on the trails of the Dundas Valley Conservation area located in Ancaster, Ontario. The event hosts multiple race distances ranging from a 10k all the way up to a 100 miler. According to the race description, the course is a 20k loop with 520 meters of elevation gain per loop. For those of us that find the metric system challenging, the math on that is that each loop is about 12.5 miles long with 1700 feet of elevation gain. Joining us on the podcast are two of the three Race Directors, Mauro Campanelli and Russell Thacker. Make sure to download for your next run, or jump over to YouTube to catch it there. Either way, leave us a comment and let us know what you think? Special thanks to Brendan Smith for the recommendation! In back-to-back outings, Nico Daws was strong in the net. However, the New Jersey Devils still got shutout by the Boston Bruins. It seemed as though the Devils had little to no energy to begin the game, and it cost them. Brendan Smith got hurt in the first period and didn't return to action. Devils might be down another player. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

Flyers coach John Tortorella calls the NHL the “No Hit League” after Garnet Hathaway gets ejected for boarding on a late icing call. Player Safety goes after both combatants in a stick-battle, handing a two-game suspension for New Jersey Devils defenseman Brendan Smith and a $5000 fine to Philadelphia Flyers' Travis Konecny. Detroit Red Wings blueliner Jake Walman also picks up a high-sticking fine - for lower than the league maximum.A trio of suspensions in the FPHL for middle fingers, crotch gestures, cross-checks to the face, and late hits - with one player banned for 18 games. ‘Intent to Blow' costs the New Jersey Devils a goal against the San Jose Sharks, Arizona's Sean Durzi puts the “bench” in bench minor, and an ECHL player gets a misconduct penalty for shooting a chicken nugget into the stands. Yep. You read that right. Plus, congrats to two retired NHL linesmen: Brian Murphy, on his induction into the USA Hockey Hall of Fame; and John Grandt on his final college hockey game before coming off-ice as the USHL's Director of Officiating. The New Jersey Devils overcame a multi-goal deficit against the New York Islanders and are now on a mini two-game win streak. This game saw the Devils once again make a lot of mistakes that could've cost them, but they found a way to squeak out the victory.
