I'm joined by Rico Caveglia, a speaker, author, personal trainer, and health coach with over 40 years of experience in the wellness space. Rico is living, breathing proof that improving your daily habits help you feel younger while growing older. Although he's approaching his 80th birthday, his strength and mobility skills put his true Fitness Age at 35 years old. We discuss how he's embracing the aging process, his tips for tapping into the mind-body connection during exercise, and the philosophy behind his signature Fast Fit 17 Fitness System.  Through his seven decades of experience, Rico has lived by the mantra, “if you do it every day, you can do it every day.” In other words, it's important to continue to use your body and maintain high functionality as you age. There are so many basic tasks that we perform everyday, like breathing, sleeping, and moving, and Rico explains why it's so important to do them to the best of our ability. He shares simple ways to improve lung capacity and his approach to effective, quality workouts.  Perhaps one of the most profound takeaways from his years in the health industry is that there is a greater purpose to staying mentally, physically, and emotionally fit as we age. As a society, it's crucial that we stay alive longer to give back our knowledge and wisdom to younger generations. By prioritizing our health, we're adding to the success and stability of the world around us. Listen in to hear our conversation about celebrating movement as we age.  Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn, or on your favorite podcast platform.  Topics Covered:What Fitness Age is and how it's measured How  to experience more energy and ease by improving daily functionsThree important things to do before you exerciseThe proper way to breathe so that your body is oxygenated while exercising How Rico came up with the Fast Fit 17 Fitness SystemLearning how to adapt with accidents and injuries The bigger picture when it comes to exercise  Resources Mentioned:Listen to my episode on Rico's Fearless Aging Podcast Check out Rico's Fast Fit 17 Fitness System Connect with Rico: WebsiteFacebookPodcast Get in Touch: My WebsiteInstagram Special offers: Download the Daily Vitality eBook at danafrost.com/daily-vitality/One lucky listener will be selected to win a sleeve of LifeWave Aeon anti-inflammatory patches. Welcome to the launch of the SportSquire Wellness Corner! As we push forward, every Tuesday you have a quick 10 minute (or less) informational episode that will help to call you to action as you improve your knowledge. This week's week's SQ Wellness Corner focuses on the importance of taking your joints through a full range of motion to help with prevention of musculoskeletal joint degradation and overall movement capacity. When we all move, it tends to be in a limited manner that may include repetitive movements such as walking, sitting to standing transitions, getting in and out of a car, but we don't always give our joints the opportunity to go through and maintain the full range of motion we need to optimize joint health. Brad speaks about the "Overhead Squat Assessment" in reference to assessing dynamic flexibility, core strength, neuromuscular control, and overall balance from the top of the chain to bottom. Highly encourage you to research this assessment if you are unfamiliar and learn how to best learn from your assessment results and how you can implement certain strategies to improve your areas of limitation. If this is something you struggle to learn on your own, finding a knowledgable Physical Therapist with experience in movement restoration can be highly beneficial. Some quick tips to help improve your overall mobility: 1.) Scan Your Body at EVERY joint from Your Neck to Your Toes: By doing this take notes of the different ranges of motion at the particular joint that "Feels Tight" and focus on mobilizing these areas until they feel less tight. Most likely tightened muscle areas can lead to problematic postural dysfunction injuries if not dealt with properly. For Example: When Scanning Your Neck: Draw your chin to chest (Does it feel tight? If so work on that motion with a 5 second hold and repetition focus to help stretch the soft tissue and take the joint through full range) If you don't feel tight there is no need to focus on that joint at the current time. Move to the next motion or next joint once you have cleared all! 2.) Incorporate Functional Movements: Squatting, lunging, overhead movements, pulling shoulder blades down and in, turning your head side as a few examples. 3.) If you sit for several hours throughout your day (Like many of us do these days) find a way to take breaks ever hour to hour and a half and go for 5-10 minutes of consecutive walking bouts. This will help to mobilize all the joints throughout your kinetic chain that are shortened with prolonged sitting and combat the negative affects of sitting. Sitting is the new smoking! Tune in each Tuesday as we continue our SportSquire Wellness Corner! Combine your KNOWLEDGE WITH YOUR ACTION!

My guest Rico Caveglia Chronological Age 78 Fitness Age 35 is America's Healthy Aging Trainer and creator of The Ageless Living Lifestyle, The Vitality For Life Training System the Be Bold Never Be Old Wellness Club and the Fearless Aging Podcast.   He is a speaker, author of 29 books/DVD programs and a personal trainer and health coach, for 38 years. He is a multi- Gold and Silver Medalist in the California State Senior Olympics. His mind/body/spiritual interactive training programs educate, inspire and empower participants to enjoy a high level of total wellness for life. Debra Atkinson, your host My own background with one foot in academics teaching at a university for 15 years, supervising our interns from the advisor side of the table, while also running a personal training department during half of that and training interns who worked for us. I've spent time working on private and public sector of fitness, working with agencies and associations, and for small privately owned businesses. This episode We thought it would be fun and worthwhile to look back at the start of our experiences in the fitness industry, Rico's 38 years and my 36 and take a decade by decade look at then, now, and the future if we could predict it and at the very least our hopes. By looking back we look at the future of the fitness industry too. How did you start… so let's be honest, health coaching wasn't even a thing. Personal training was just – where you were – rooting at that point. Share a bit about your start and where that was. From the perspective of getting clients, hourly wages, revenue. What was that like for you? So move forward into the 90s. We've had the good sense to have a little smaller hair, stop wearing our underwear on the outside of our tights, and slide, and step were in full swing about then. Questions in this episode: What changed for you in the 90's? Late 90s, early 2000, do you recall that? Where were you when 911 was happening? Then after 911, the recession, how did that effect your business or what you were doing at the time? From 2010 to 2020 it was a pretty optimistic, lazy environment would you agree if I said that? What scares you most about right now? What is the silver lining right now? What do you see for the future? Who will survive? The take-aways from this episode are most important to me. If you were advising a trainer whether early into their career or middle of their career, what three things would you suggest they do right now to be one of those who thrive in the future of the fitness industry? #37: Training Considerations for 'Older' Gym-Goers - Bryn's PT Observations & Recommendations

Steve’s 37 and Bryn is 29. Neither are spring chickens, but we still feel like youth is on our side. In part this comes from the actions we take towards health, nutrition and strength, and in part our assumptions of what getting older should ‘feel’ and ‘look’ like.  And given Bryn’s PT practice works with a reasonable volume of ‘older’, say 40-80 years old, we thought it would make for a good episode to discuss the observational and recommendation differences between a young person and someone more mature.  For younger folk, this episode is looking into a crystal ball into the future, and should give you food for thought. And for those in their 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and older, you should be able to take some comfort, inspiration and practical recommendations from this discussion.    For the first 5 mins, Steve has a quick rant about the amount of accumulated crap in his house they are having to sift through as part of a multi-room decoration effort.   Here’s what we cover:    1️⃣ - Actual Age vs Fitness Age - it’s time to reset your view of what ‘old’ feels like 2️⃣ - There’s a decline in body health and mobility - 40 year olds are coming in riddled with issues 3️⃣ - Body goals morphing from purely aesthetics to including longevity and function as people get older 4️⃣ - Considerations for working on BIG aesthetic goals for the older population 5️⃣ - Muscle building hormonal differences between young and older people 6️⃣ - Bryn’s Top 7 Observations and Recommendations for older clients -    To be clear, this is not an attempt to label a certain age bracket as old. Instead, this guidance is intended to help understand what changes occur as the human body ages in todays day and age, so that you can set the right expectations and train smart.   ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If you like this and other AdapNation episodes, please don't forget to subscribe to the channel, as well asleaving a 5 star reviewand letting friends and family know of this Podcast on Social Media.   AdapNation Useful Links: ■ AdapNation Website - where you will find articles, videos and journals on all things wellness, training and mindset ■ AdapNation Food Diary - 100+ Tasty Healthy Meal Ideas, that are focussed on helping you thrive ■ Facebook Community - To get into conversation with like-minded folk wanting to be their best ■ #HyperWorkouts YouTube Videos - 8-week training blocks, with video guides and print-outs ■ AdapNation Instagram - To see how Steve uses and progresses in the gym

Should your fitness age be younger than your real age?You obviously already know how old you are, but does that number match up to your fitness age?Whether you make frequent trips to your gym, or engage in daily physical activities, you may be wondering how fit you really are. Your fitness age is determined by your VO2max, which is your body's ability to take in and utilize oxygen. Your VO2max indicates your current cardiovascular endurance level and can be used to compare your personal fitness level with people that are the same age.Unfortunately, if your VO2max level is below average for your age group, that means your fitness age is older than your actual age.Is it possible to get your fitness age lower than your real age?Pam Peeke, MD, joins Melanie Cole, MS, to discuss what your fitness age means and if it should be younger than your chronological age.
