Is Muscle Power More Important Than Strength For Longevity?

The B.rad Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 11, 2026 31:14

In your 30s, you start to lose a certain percentage of muscle tissue year over year, and that rate really accelerates when you hit 60. But everything we've been told about the importance of maintaining muscle as you age is roughly around half right. Maintaining muscle mass and muscle strength is a key driver of longevity, but even more important is maintaining muscle power and explosiveness. They are not the same. A recent 10-year study of nearly 4,000 adults revealed that those with lower muscle power and explosiveness had a six to seven times higher mortality risk compared to the strongest, most powerful group, while differences in pure strength were insignificant once age and health history were factored in. I explain the difference between sarcopenia and dynapenia, why muscle power is the first thing you lose and you lose it more quickly than anything else, and why we lose our anaerobic conditioning, muscle strength, and power at around 40% per decade, compared to roughly 10% for aerobic conditioning. I also share practical ways to develop and preserve muscle power and explosiveness safely, so you can maintain that important attribute throughout life and avoid the devastating consequences of falls. TIMESTAMPS: Muscle mass and muscle strength are not the same but both are key drivers to longevity. [01:01] Sarcopenia is age-related loss of muscle mass or muscle strength. Dynapenia is the age-related loss of muscle power and explosiveness. [02:25] Training has risen in the level of sophistication where athletes can perform better. [05:16] We have an obligation to hone things like coordination, balance, agility, and timing. [07:22] Dynapenia is defined as the loss of the nervous system's ability to recruit what muscle you still have. [10:10] Muscle mass declines the slowest. Muscle strength declines faster than muscle mass declines. Muscle power declines faster than all the others. [14:29] Falls should be in our central focus as something that is really concerning to us. Overall, there are 14 million aging Americans who fall every year, resulting in three million emergency room visits. [19:20] How do you train for power specifically as opposed to just building your muscular strength? [20:34] All manner of complex kinetic chain acuity starts with your feet. Your feet play a huge role in balance stability, proper movement through the kinetic chain and proper execution. Y'all, we gotta give a little warning with this one, it may get a little spicy. To prep for this episode, we turned to the internet to see what advice pet parents are likely to find, and boy, oh, boy… We don't even know how to end this sentence. In this episode, Emily and Tiffany are getting into why the things that come up when you search “How to calm down a hyper dog” aren't bad, just… You know, overly simplistic, prescriptive management techniques that aren't actually addressing the issue. We're breaking down the small kernels of truth we can take away from this advice, why it isn't working for you, and what it actually means to teach a lifelong skill, not shift the blame onto pet parents for not being “chill” enough. Calm isn't a personality trait. It's not breed destiny. It's a skill that can be built through repetition, in the right conditions, with the right feedback. We promise, and if you don't believe us, you can ask our clients. TLDL (too long, didn't listen): 3 Key Takeaways 1️⃣ Down-regulation is a skill – Skills can be taught through repetition, in the right conditions, with the right feedback.2️⃣ Rest and relaxation aren't the same thing – A dog can rest while totally wound up, and be completely relaxed while wide awake. Conflating the two sends us chasing the wrong metric. 3️⃣ It's not wrong, just incomplete – There's a kernel of truth in the common advice, but there's also a lot missing. If it hasn't worked, it doesn't mean it won't; it means we need to tweak. For the full episode show notes, including the resources mentioned in this episode, go here.Amazon Affiliate StorefrontFind products we recommend at the Pet Harmony Amazon Storefront. As an Amazon Associate, Pet Harmony earns from qualifying purchases.More from Pet HarmonyPet Parents: enrichment ideas and practical behavior tips

Okay, this one is a little different from our usual Comfort Food conversations, and honestly? I'm so glad we went there. My guest is the gorgeous and refreshingly honest Catt Sadler, and we get into two topics that I think so many of you are going to relate to. First: plastic surgery. Catt was truly one of the first women in the public eye to openly document her facelift (plus neck lift and upper blepharoplasty) at 48 years old, at a time when people were shocked anyone under 60 would even consider it. Three years later, she has zero regrets and zero filters about the whole experience. We talk about the real recovery (hint: it was harder than she expected), the issues she dealt with post-surgery, how she found her Beverly Hills surgeon Dr. Kim, what she actually paid versus the insane prices you see floating around now, and where the line is between wanting to look your best and chasing something that can never be fixed with a scalpel. Such a good, honest conversation. Then we shift to something that genuinely surprised me when I first heard about it: Catt is really, really close friends with her ex-husband's now wife. I'm someone who is close with my partners' exes, but this is the flip side of that story. Catt shares how it started at her son's 7th birthday party and turned into an almost 20-year friendship, and why she thinks the kids being able to witness it has been one of the greatest gifts she could give them.So much warmth and truth in this one. How can we approach aging with more joy, empathy, and meaningful connection? We often talk about lifespan, or how long we live, but Kerry Burnight believes the more important question is how fully we live along the way.Burnight is a gerontologist, former professor of geriatric medicine, and author of Joyspan: The Art and Science of Thriving in Life's Second Half. Drawing from decades of experience working with older adults, she discusses why adopting a “growth aging mindset” can change the way we think about getting older, and why autonomy matters just as much as safety in conversations with aging loved ones. As she puts it, “it's not just the big moments, it's the little moments, too.”In this Quick Thinks episode of Think Fast Talk Smart, Burnight and host Matt Abrahams explore the role of listening, storytelling, and empathy in effective communication across generations. A full life isn't about the quantity of time, but the quality. Our lifespan might describe how long we live, but it doesn't say anything about how well we live. For that, Kerry Burnight says, we need a different measure: joyspan.Burnight is a gerontologist, former professor of geriatric medicine, and author of Joyspan: The Art and Science of Thriving in Life's Second Half. In her decades working with older adults, she noticed a gap: “I would have a lot of people who lived long lives and were in pretty darn good physical health. Careers in technology change as professionals move into their 40s and 50s. Early in a tech career, rapid change feels exciting. New tools, companies, and opportunities create momentum. Over time that same pace can begin to feel heavy. Many professionals start asking different questions. They wonder how long their skills will stay valuable, whether companies will continue to seek their experience, and what happens financially if their career path becomes less predictable. We explain that most of these concerns are not panic. Instead they reflect awareness of how quickly the tech industry evolves. People working in technology understand change better than most, because they help create it. Financial planning helps turn that uncertainty into flexibility. When finances are strong and organized, career changes become something to manage rather than something threatening. We start by discussing the importance of understanding real spending. Many people track their savings but have not translated those savings into the cost of living their current lifestyle. We talk about separating fixed expenses such as housing and insurance from flexible spending like travel and lifestyle upgrades. Once those numbers are clear, financial scenarios become possible. We can evaluate what happens if someone works until age 60, if income drops earlier, or if someone transitions into consulting or advisory work. We also explore how tech compensation often peaks earlier than in other industries. Many professionals reach their highest earning years in their late 30s or 40s. That means the window for building wealth is compressed. These years become critical for maximizing retirement contributions and building taxable investments. Without a plan, rising income can lead to rising expenses and long term financial commitments that reduce flexibility later. Equity compensation is another major topic. Stock grants, options, and employee stock purchase plans can become powerful wealth builders. However they also introduce concentration risk because income, career stability, and investments may all depend on the same company. Diversifying over time becomes an important part of reducing that risk. Yes, we also address the role of artificial intelligence in shaping tech careers. Historically, new technology changes work more than it eliminates it. Skills like judgment, leadership, and communication often become more valuable as automation increases. Financial planning therefore focuses on building resilience through strong savings, diversified investments, and liquidity that supports career transitions. Finally we discuss the emotional side of mid career decisions. Many professionals feel trapped by high salaries and demanding roles. With proper planning, people often discover they need less peak income than they assumed. Their investments may already support future goals. That realization can create options such as consulting, semi retirement, or less stressful roles. Financial planning ultimately helps people see the full picture and build flexibility for the many stages of life.
