Happy New Year! For many of us, a new year brings a renewed sense of motivation when it comes to health. Earlier this year, Russ sat down to speak with Jonathan Long, a Stanford biochemist who studies the chemicals produced during exercise. The conversation was one of our most popular during 2024 and today we're re-sharing it. As many of us look to create healthy habits in 2025, we hope you'll tune in to hear the exciting research Professor Long is doing to better understand the deep chemical connections between diet, exercise, and human health. Have a question for Russ? Send it our way in writing or via voice memo, and it might be featured on an upcoming episode. Please introduce yourself, let us know where you're listening from, and share your quest. His lab has identified a chemical produced in the digestive tract during exercise that can make a person stop eating. She's a registered dietitian nutritionist, certified diabetes care and education specialist, and the author of Prediabetes: A Complete Guide, which is now out in a newly updated 2nd edition.  And the timing couldn't be better because a couple of days after I received the announcement about the release of the updated edition, I got the results of some bloodwork that was done as part of a routine physical. And my fasting blood glucose reading was 101… with a little “H” next to it to indicate that this reading is considered “high.” In fact, a fasting blood glucose level between 100 and 124 meets the diagnostic criteria for prediabetes. So, this topic just got personal for me!Highlights from our conversation:How prediabetes is diagnosed (there's more to it than just a single test result)The importance of putting individual test results into contextWho is at risk (more people than you might think)Why Type 2 diabetes (and prediabetes) are not always or only due to lifestyle choicesThe two main issues that cause high blood sugar in people with diabetesNon-dietary strategies for increasing insulin sensitivityThe three different types of physical activity and how they affect blood sugar metabolismThe best timing for exerciseThe type of carbohydrates that improve insulin sensitivityThe role of supplements in managing blood sugarWeight-neutral approaches to diabetes care and preventionResource for listeners: Pre-diabetes checklistPre-Diabetes: A Complete GuideFind Jill across the web:https://jillweisenberger.com/https://twitter.com/nutritionjillhttps://www.instagram.com/nutritionjill/https://www.facebook.com/NutritionJillNutrition Diva is hosted by Monica Reinagel. Dr. Chris Palmer is taking the internet by storm and for good reason. He's a Harvard psychiatrist and researcher, and his new book, Brain Energy, proposes a comprehensive theory of what causes mental illness, integrating existing theories and research into one unifying theory, the brain energy theory of mental illness, in which he argues that mental disorders are really metabolic disorders of the brain. In today's conversation, Dr. Palmer shares the science behind how the mitochondria functions in the body, and ultimately affects brain health. He shares how we can support healthy mitochondria and what the recent research in the last 20 years tells us about healing mental illness with metabolic interventions, like the ketogenic diet, and lifestyle strategies like exercise, a good sleep routine, reducing inflammation, and more.It is really amazing to think about the healing and regeneration that can happen for your mitochondria when you use these metabolic interventions, and hearing the life-changing impacts of implementing these practices with amazing stories like he shares in this episode brings so much hope for the future. I can't thank Dr. Palmer enough for concisely putting this theory into a book that anyone can read. It is such an important message, affirming our ability to really have control over our life and live the best version of it.We also cover…00:02:00 — An Introduction to How Mitochondria Functions in the BodyWhy Dr. Palmer became a psychiatrist and his mother's struggleHow the mitochondria can influence mental illness The role of mitochondria in the body: Neurotransmitters and hormonesWhy women are more susceptible to mental illnessThe new research backing up his theory00:22:00 — How Metabolic Interventions like the Ketogenic Diet Impact Brain HealthWhat we can do proactively support mental healthMetabolic strategies for improving mitochondrial healthHow COVID can cause mental health challengesCase study: Recovering from chronic schizophrenia using metabolic treatmentsWhy the ketogenic diet is so effective at treating seizures and other brain illnessesHow the brain can use ketones as a fuel source to support and regenerate mitochondria00:46:00 — Lifestyle Strategies That Support Mental HealthDangers of prescription medications that harm metabolismMitochondrial biogenesis through exerciseThe importance of a good sleep routineDr. Palmer's perspective on supplements Effects of the ketogenic diet on women's hormonesDr. Palmer and Kelly's experiences with the ketogenic dietResources:Website: brainenergy.comWebsite: chrispalmermd.comWebsite: The Mental and Metabolic Health Assessment Instagram: @chrispalmermdTwitter: @chrispalmermdFacebook:.facebook.com/ChrisPalmerMDYouTube: Chris Palmer MDRead: Brain Energy: A Revolutionary Breakthrough in...

This week, Dr. Haley Hallowell teaches us all about the gut microbiome and virome, that is, how microbes and viruses inside us affect each other and our own health! We also play a game on this episode where I make some bold claims that have gained traction on social media recently-some true, some ridiculous, some in between-and Haley becomes a professional myth-buster, using the latest science of course. Make sure to listen to the end because this episode wraps up with the two of us trying to figure out how much poop can fit in the human body.Dr. Haley Hallowell, PhD is a postdoctoral researcher in the Suez lab at Johns Hopkins University where she studies how bacteriophages influence the microbiome and how the host immune system responds to these viruses. She is also a fabulous science communicator and you can follow her on Twitter and TikTok, where she sets the record straight on pseudoscientific health claims about the gut. Her videos are amazing! "You can pay now and play later, or you can play now and pay later. But either way, you are going to have to pay". This excellent quote was provided by John C. Maxwell in his book, Today Matters: 12 Daily Practices to Guarantee Tomorrow's Success". This quote expands on the principle that today is important for your future. Your actions today will determine if your future is filled with success, or failure. Which path are you headed on based on your daily actions? In this episode, host Matt Lupi provides you with a call to action to make today count. On the journey to success, a fee must be paid. Dues are collected. You can either choose to pay these dues now while you are still young, hungry and full of energy OR you can defer these dues until later in life, filling your days with stress, unfulfillment and worry. Either way, you have to pay. Would you rather pay now and play later, or play now and pay later? Many people desire success but lack the work ethic that success requires. Each day, we can pay dues toward our finances, mindset, education, relationships, emotions, spirituality and more. Investing in these critical areas of life now will blossom into future success, where you can then play freely. Rather than taking vacations while work still clouds your mind and brings you stress, you can instead live freely and do what you want, when you want, with who you want, if you just make the decision to pay your dues NOW. In this episode, Matt discusses: The importance of paying now, instead of playingWays to pay your dues NOW and every dayHow to become proactive, rather than reactiveThe benefit of playing later, without stress and obligationA visualization exerciseThe expense of success increases with your age4-step plan of action to make today matterYou can listen to this episode on your favorite podcast platform and also check out previous episodes HERE. I'm joined by Rico Caveglia, a speaker, author, personal trainer, and health coach with over 40 years of experience in the wellness space. Rico is living, breathing proof that improving your daily habits help you feel younger while growing older. Although he's approaching his 80th birthday, his strength and mobility skills put his true Fitness Age at 35 years old. We discuss how he's embracing the aging process, his tips for tapping into the mind-body connection during exercise, and the philosophy behind his signature Fast Fit 17 Fitness System.  Through his seven decades of experience, Rico has lived by the mantra, “if you do it every day, you can do it every day.” In other words, it's important to continue to use your body and maintain high functionality as you age. There are so many basic tasks that we perform everyday, like breathing, sleeping, and moving, and Rico explains why it's so important to do them to the best of our ability. He shares simple ways to improve lung capacity and his approach to effective, quality workouts.  Perhaps one of the most profound takeaways from his years in the health industry is that there is a greater purpose to staying mentally, physically, and emotionally fit as we age. As a society, it's crucial that we stay alive longer to give back our knowledge and wisdom to younger generations. By prioritizing our health, we're adding to the success and stability of the world around us. Listen in to hear our conversation about celebrating movement as we age.  Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn, or on your favorite podcast platform.  Topics Covered:What Fitness Age is and how it's measured How  to experience more energy and ease by improving daily functionsThree important things to do before you exerciseThe proper way to breathe so that your body is oxygenated while exercising How Rico came up with the Fast Fit 17 Fitness SystemLearning how to adapt with accidents and injuries The bigger picture when it comes to exercise  Resources Mentioned:Listen to my episode on Rico's Fearless Aging Podcast Check out Rico's Fast Fit 17 Fitness System Connect with Rico: WebsiteFacebookPodcast Get in Touch: My WebsiteInstagram Special offers: Download the Daily Vitality eBook at danafrost.com/daily-vitality/One lucky listener will be selected to win a sleeve of LifeWave Aeon anti-inflammatory patches.
