Have you ever wondered what kind of health information your teen is actually absorbing from TikTok, Instagram, or even AI chat tools? Do you know how to recognize—and gently disrupt—the misinformation that could be shaping your teen's choices about their body and health? In this eye-opening conversation, I talk with Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell, a family physician, health advocate, and mom of two girls, about the growing trend of teens turning to social media and AI for medical advice. Dr. Bayo shares the most common myths circulating online—from misinformation about birth control and fertility, to supplements that can damage the liver, to dangerous over-the-counter products like kratom energy shots marketed as “natural.” She explains why teens are especially vulnerable to believing influencers who “look and sound like them,” and how parents can begin to disrupt these patterns. We also explore practical ways to equip our teens with critical thinking skills and strategies to advocate for their health—while giving moms tangible steps to reduce anxiety and stay informed. Guest Bio:Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell, MD, is a board-certified family physician, Medical Director of Urgent Care Clinics at St. Mary's Health Network in Reno, Nevada, and a passionate patient advocate. Known as “Dr. BCW” on social media, she reaches millions through Instagram, TikTok, and her podcast Beyond Clinical Walls, where she helps families navigate healthcare and misinformation. A frequent guest on CNN and NBC, she also serves on the CDC's National Community and Public Engagement Work Group and Nevada's Patient Protection Commission. Drawing from her own journey of misdiagnosis, as well as her near-death experience during childbirth, Dr. Bayo brings both expertise and empathy as she empowers patients to take charge of their health. Three Takeaways: Not all information is credible—even if it sounds relatable. Teach your teen the difference between “accessible” and “trustworthy,” and remind them that not every influencer is a safe source of medical advice. Ask questions instead of lecturing. When your teen believes something online, try asking, “What's your plan if that doesn't work?” to encourage critical thinking without sparking defensiveness. Be proactive as a parent. Search what's trending on TikTok or Google to get a glimpse of what your teen may be exposed to, and equip them with three essentials before leaving home: how to get medical help, what insurance they have, and what medications or allergies they must know. As a doula and advocate for mothers, I've seen firsthand how important it is that every woman feels safe, seen, and supported throughout her pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. But the reality is, not all women are receiving the care they deserve — especially Black mothers. In fact, Black women in the United States are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women — a heartbreaking and unacceptable reality that demands action, awareness, and systemic change. That's why today's discussion is so important because we need to spread this message. I had the honor of speaking with Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell about the Black maternal health crisis. This discussion was full of passion and vulnerability where Dr. Bayo generously shared her personal birth story, the critical data we all need to know, and powerful, practical ways we can begin to create change. While I may not share this lived experience, I believe it's my responsibility — as a woman, a mother, and a birth professional — to listen, learn, and use my platform to help protect and support every mother. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who cares about improving maternal care in our country and around the world. Who is Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell? Dr. Bayo, a family medicine physician and nationally recognized health equity advocate, is the founder and CEO of Beyond Clinical Walls, a platform that delivers credible health information through social media and podcasts. She's also a powerful TEDx speaker, where her talk “Do No Harm” has garnered over 2 million views and sparked a nationwide conversation about the maternal health crisis. Dr. Bayo is a passionate advocate for improving healthcare inequalities, and her work as the medical director for urgent care clinics at Saint Mary's Health Network and her numerous leadership roles — including serving on the CDC Community and Public Engagement Workgroup and the Nevada Patient Protection Commission — have solidified her as a trailblazer in healthcare. If you're an expectant mom, a healthcare provider, or simply someone who wants to be part of the solution, I hope this episode encourages you to listen more deeply, speak up more boldly, and advocate for better care for all mothers. Because every mom deserves to be protected, heard, and valued — no matter her race, background, or birth plan. Let's continue to show up for one another and be part of the change our maternal healthcare system so desperately needs. In her keynote address for the 33rd annual Labour Fair at Toronto's George Brown College, No One Left Behind: Building a Workers' First Emergency Response to the Tariff Crisis that Unites Us, Ladd discusses the current trade war, the dangers facing workers and a solidarity-driven plan that puts workers first. Reflecting on what's needed in a workers' first approach to the tariff crisis, Ladd says: “Our communities are already in trouble. And we know that the tariffs imposed are gonna have a ripple impact, far worse than the pandemic's… We desperately need a government strategy that has learned from these past economic crises to ensure that no one gets left behind. ..To make sure that when you are providing supports, that they first of all have to be adequate. That they're not institutionalizing poverty. That they're accessible … And that they're structured in a way that doesn't unintentionally punish people after the fact." About today's speaker: Deena Ladd has been working to improve wages and working conditions in sectors of work that are dominated with low-wages, violations of rights, precarious and temp work for over 30 years. She has worked to support and develop grassroots training, education and organizing to build the power of workers with groups such as the Fight for $15 and Fairness Campaign, Decent Work and Health Network, the Migrant Rights Network and Justice for Workers. Ladd is one of the founders and executive director of the Toronto Workers' Action Centre. The Workers' Action Centre organizes to improve wages and working conditions with low-waged workers, women, racialized and immigrant workers in precarious jobs that face discrimination, violations of rights and no benefits in the workplace. Can a unified network of patients, clinicians, and researchers finally transform tinnitus care? The team at Stop The Ring presents an ambitious plan to do just that with the creation of a Tinnitus Learning Health Network. Originally presented at the 'InFocus: Rethinking Tinnitus Symposium' and moderated by Dr. David Holcomb, this discussion brings together Jeffery Reagan, a tinnitus patient and founder of Stop The Ring, Dr. Jim Henry, a leading tinnitus researcher, and Dr. Donna Murray, a learning health network expert. Together, they outline how this innovative approach can revolutionize tinnitus care by breaking down silos and fostering collaboration to develop standardized, patient-centered treatment pathways. Jeffery shares his personal journey with tinnitus, emphasizing the critical importance of early detection and effective care. Dr. Henry highlights the current gaps in tinnitus management, including the lack of clinical standards and outcome consistency, while Dr. Murray explains how a learning health network integrates real-world data to accelerate improvements in care. Drawing on successful models from other conditions, the team outlines a path toward building a network that breaks down silos, amplifies the patient voice, and delivers better outcomes for those affected by tinnitus. **For more information, visit StopTheRing.org

In America today, reports show that food insecurity is a pressing issue for over 35 million people. With rising grocery prices, inflation, and the lasting impacts of the pandemic—understanding the complexities of hunger has never been more imperative. Mariana Chilton explores this issue in the book, The Painful Truth about Hunger in America: Why We Must Unlearn Everything We Think We Know—and Start Again with some new insights and perspectives. Mariana Chilton is an author, professor, and founder of the Drexel University — Center for Hunger-Free Communities. In The Painful Truth About Hunger in America, Chilton takes a radical and urgent new approach to addressing hunger and poverty in the US. Where traditionally researchers, policymakers, and advocates have approached providing food through donations or non-profit organizations, Chilton focuses on the fundamental structures which she asserts have a keen interest in maintaining food stratification. Chilton suggests that the solution to food insecurity lies beyond providing food itself and will have to take both a political and spiritual approach in fixing this crisis. Drawing on 25 years of research, programming, and advocacy efforts, Chilton argues that food insecurity is created and maintained by those in power. To demonstrate her point, Chilton calls back to the original wounds suffered in this country — through a history of colonization, genocide, and enslavement. Drawing on intimate interviews she has conducted with many Black and Brown women, Chilton sheds light on the experience of hunger as linked with trauma and gender-based violence, violence with the natural world, and with ourselves. The Painful Truth about Hunger in America not only reinvigorates our commitment to uprooting the causes of poverty and discrimination but also points to a more generative and humane world where everyone can be nourished. Mariana Chilton, PhD, MPH, is a Professor at Drexel University's Dornsife School of Public Health and Director of the Center for Hunger-Free Communities, a research and advocacy center focused on addressing hunger and economic insecurity. She founded Witnesses to Hunger, a movement amplifying women's voices in the fight against poverty, and leads the Building Wealth and Health Network, which promotes entrepreneurship in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. Her work on food insecurity, trauma, and human rights has influenced national policies, and she has advised Congress, Sesame Street, and the Institute of Medicine. Dr. Chilton's research has been featured in major media outlets, including The Washington Post and CBS News. On the morning of Thursday, June 20, unionized nurses at Ascension St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore held a rally outside the hospital to raise awareness of their efforts to secure a first contract and to show management that they're not backing down from their core demands for safe staffing and an operational model that puts patients and patient care first. "St. Agnes nurses are calling on Ascension to accept their proposals to improve safe staffing and, subsequently, nurse retention," a press release from National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United (NNOC/NNU) stated. "Nearly 20 percent of nurses at St. Agnes began employment at the hospital after January 1 of this year. Meanwhile, just over a third of nurses have more than four years of experience at the hospital... The Catholic hospital system is one of the largest in the country with 140 hospitals in 19 states and also one of the wealthiest, with cash reserves, an investment company, and a private equity operation worth billions of dollars—and, because of its nonprofit status, is exempt from paying federal taxes." In this on-the-ground episode, we take you to the NNOC/NNU picket line and speak with Nicki Horvat, an RN in the Neonatal Intensive Care unit at Ascension St. Agnes and member of the bargaining team, about what she and her coworkers are fighting for.
