LSU gymnast and social media sensation Olivia Dunne joined women's basketball star Angel Reese on the cover of the most recent edition Sports Illustrated for their NIL earnings, personal branding, and success both in their sports and in business. Dunne has the third highest NIL valuation of any NCAA athlete, trailing only Bronny James, son of Lebron James, and Colorado quarterback Shadeur Sanders while Reese takes the number seven spot in NIL valuations. Each of these LSU Tigers have an estimated value of seven figures and based off of their influence that reaches far beyond the city limits of Baton Rouge, they aren't done yet. Stephanie Apstein, senior writer for Sports Illustrated, wrote the feature on Dunne, Reese, and how the LSU athletic department has been a pioneer for NIL in creating opportunities for student athletes and establishing connections with brands to set the student athletes up for NIL success. What Apstein also highlights, which might be even more important than creating those opportunities, is financial literacy courses in which every athlete at LSU is given in-depth training on managing wealth and smart spending and saving habits. There are only three women in the top 15 of NIL earnings per On3 Sports and all three of those women play for LSU: Dunne, Reese, and Reese's teammate and fellow reigning national champion Flau'jae Johnson. If LSU has proven anything it is that playing for the purple and gold can bring athletes championships and will get them prepared for the next level. Now in the era of NIL, LSU has also proven that it can get athletes paid too. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Nutrafol Take the first step to visibly thicker, healthier hair. Maybe you know her as the dynamic guard on the LSU Women's basketball team that won the NCAA March Madness tournament just a few months ago. Or maybe you recognize her from her performances on the Rap Game and America's Got Talent. Regardless of how you know her, it's no secret that Flau'jae Johnson is doing big things, both on the basketball court and on the music scene. Today, Flau'jae Johnson joins WRKF's Karen Henderson for a conversation about her journey, which is captured in the new documentary, FENOM. Ever since its founding in 1998, the New Orleans Musicians Clinic has provided free healthcare to the city's vulnerable community of musicians and culture bearers. It's the only clinic in the country that provides free or low-cost healthcare services, mental health resources, and social services to performing artists. But a recent investigative report has brought to light some serious concerns about the organization's leadership. The Gulf States Newsroom's Drew Hawkins recently reported on this for Scalawag Magazine. He joins us for more on his story, “Plantation Politics: The New Orleans Musicians' Clinic's crisis of credibility.” But first, seventy one. That's how many people died in crashes on New Orleans streets last year. The city wants to reverse the trend of rising roadway deaths, but as WWNO's Carly Berlin reports, some critics say it could be doing more to prevent this problem. The two Tiger teammates share how their tight knit bond has motivated one another, held each other accountable and supported each other through the highs and lows of the past couple months while building a championship mentality every time they stepped on the court. Both women growing up in single mother households, attribute their determination and swag to their mothers who paved the way for them to have the opportunities they do. Angel took Flau, a freshman, under her wing after bumping heads early in their season and led by example to show Flau and her other teammates what it takes to have a heart of a champion. Angel, named the Most Outstanding Player Of 2023 NCAA Championship, is known for her dominant play on the court just as much for her voice off the court as well. Amassing over 1M social media followers, Angel shares how she has used her position in sports not just to be one of the best to do it but setting out to be most influential as well. She shares with the guys her thought process for some of her comments and double downed on her words being proud of the lane she has created for herself and women who look like her. Pursuing a passion of music all her life, Flau'jae was always doubted that she could be successful as a rapper and a basketball player but being named SEC freshman of the year after winning the NCAA title has proved the naysayers wrong. Flau' said her “ahhh moment” was Sunday evening when the confetti was pouring down and she was hugging the championship trophy while her song blared through the speakers of the arena…Flau' emotionally shared how meaningful it all was to have everything click at once and grateful to her mother for never giving up their plan and paid a special tribute to her father who was killed before she was born. Channing gets the girls laughing and asks about Coach Mulkey's fashion style for game days asking if they get to hold her accountable for her outfit choices just as she holds them accountable for their play on the court.
