The Dream Journal
Dream Sharing and Empathy with Prof Mark Blagrove and Prof Julia Lockheart

Does dream sharing increase empathy and insight? Today meet two English professors who say, "Yes it does!" The Science and Art of Dreaming is their new book. Mark starts out by talking about the innocence of dreams and how they tell the truth, even though we often can't recognize it. Julia suggests we can look at dreams as our own art work. Together they describe their process in which Mark guides the discussion of a dream while Julia creates a drawing around the dream on pages torn from Frued's famous book, The Interpretation of Dreams. Mark describes his research which shows that (1) dream sharing increases empathy of group members and (2) people who are high in empathy are more attracted to dreamwork than those who are not. He also touches on human self-domestication and shares recent work suggesting that dream sharing might have been an important part of that process. We take three callers. First John from Santa Cruz describes that he feels sensations in dreams like thorns prickling but not body blows. Steve Popp from the Garden Show then shares a dream about a hooded black cobra lying in square coils. Finally we take a call from Ray of Santa Cruz who dreamt of being chased by a giant bear at Stonehenge. BIO: Mark Blagrove is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Sleep Laboratory at Swansea University, UK. He is a past-President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. Julia Lockheart is Associate Professor at the Swansea College of Art, University of Wales Trinity St David, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts. Since 2016 they have undertaken public Ullman dream discussions, with Julia simultaneously painting each dream as part of their DreamsID.com collaboration. The collaboration has resulted in their 2023 book, The Science and Art of Dreaming, published by Routledge. In this episode, we take an archetypal look at romantic love, the true aspects of past relationships we may still be grieving, and an astrological perspective of Pamela Anderson's life and love story in the recent Netflix documentary, "Pamela, A Love Story." With attention to the symbolic mirror her life reflects of the Feminine for the collective, we also investigate her personal story through the lens of projection, illusion, and the Divine hope that romantic life holds.

Sigmund Freud (1856 to 1939) is considered to be one of the pioneers of modern psychology. His theory of personality states that (a) the human psyche (personality) has more than one aspect (see below) and (b) the unconscious mind can be highly influential in directing human behavior. His contribution to the field of psychology was in describing how impulses and ideas contained in the unconscious were sometimes blocked from becoming conscious (Tuckett, 2019). These blocks contributed to the suffering of his patients. It is recognized that his ideas related to the impact of childhood sexuality on human development and personality are uncomfortable for many. These are not widely adopted today. But many of his other ideas still contribute to our understanding of the human entity. Thus, any book about understanding human beings should include some of Freud's ideas. There are three things to keep in mind when evaluating Freud's theory of personality. First, theories are not meant to be permanent. Theories, by their very nature, are temporary structures used to explain a set of facts and to understand phenomena. As the facts change, the theories continue to evolve until they eventually become obsolete and are replaced by new theories. Second, Freud's thinking kept evolving throughout his lifetime. If he were still alive today it is most likely that his thinking would be much different than it was in the early 1900s. And third, theories (like Freud's) do not predict human behavior; they help us understand human behavior.

What's Your Grief Podcast: Grief Support for Those Who Like to Listen

Sigmund Freud first proposed the concept of ‘defense mechanisms’ as an element of his influential theory of personality. For those of you who took Psych 101, think back to the Id, Ego, and Superego in which all elements, with the exception of the ego, reside in the unconscious. Since their introduction, the concept of defense mechanisms has been expanded quite a bit, and they are still used today to try to understand certain behavioral patterns. In this episode of the What’s Your Grief Podcast, we discuss how people sometimes use defense mechanisms to cope with grief.   0:00 - 4:30: Introductions Ongoing and Upcoming eCourses Upcoming events 4:30 - 29:00: Using Defense Mechanisms in Grief Denial Regression Projection Displacement Intellectualization Undoing Humor Sublimation Altruism Post: Using Defense Mechanisms in Grief Post: 31 Psychological Defense Mechanisms via Psychologist World
