Jonathan Alexandre, Senior Counsel at Liberty Counsel Action, takes the helm of CURE America with steely resolve, stepping in for Donald T. Eason, who's in Israel meeting with high-level officials and influential people. Joined by special guest Paul Teller, Executive Vice President of Advancing American Freedom, alongside Kris Ullman, President of Eagle Forum, and Marty Dannenfelser, Vice President for Government Relations at CURE, Alexandre fuels a blazing showdown of ideas. Ullman drops a Trump-fueled bombshell on defining sex amid cultural chaos, while Dannenfelser tears into California's $19 billion Medicaid scam—a scandal screaming for justice. Teller roars against Congress's spineless spending cuts, as Ullman brands Planned Parenthood's $699 million abortion empire “colonialism in a caring mask” on the world stage. Dannenfelser battles judicial overreach with fearless reforms, forging a call to arms as sharp as it is unapologetic. Cure America delivers—bold, brilliant, and blazing with purpose.

We were so full of Marcia Gay Pride from last week's episode that it was time to break a decades long blacklisting of “Pollock” to discuss her dark horse Oscar win as Lee Krasner in Ed Harris's punch drunk biopic of Jackson Pollock. We also get Amy Madigan going full Ullman, Jennifer Connelly as Worst Supporting Ruth, John Heard from "The Sopranos", a wacky cameo from Val Kilmer that takes us down a plastic surgery rabbit hole, to say nothing of the "Uncle Buck" digression we eventually get to, as well as our thoughts on what makes biopics work or not work and a requisite celebration of Kathleen Quinlan, who is not in this movie. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Woods' new preprint on object permanence, published by Steven Byrnes on March 8, 2024 on LessWrong. Quick poorly-researched post, probably only of interest to neuroscientists. The experiment Justin Wood at University of Indiana has, over many years with great effort, developed a system for raising baby chicks such that all the light hitting their retina is experimentally controlled right from when they're an embryo - the chicks are incubated and hatched in darkness, then moved to a room with video screens, head-tracking and so on. For a much better description of how this works and how he got into this line of work, check out his recent appearance on the Brain Inspired podcast. He and collaborators posted a new paper last week: "Object permanence in newborn chicks is robust against opposing evidence" by Wood, Ullman, Wood, Spelke, and Wood. I just read it today. It's really cool! In their paper, they are using the system above to study "object permanence", the idea that things don't disappear when they go out of sight behind an occluder. The headline result is that baby chicks continue to act as if object permanence is true, even if they have seen thousands of examples where it is false and zero where it is true over the course of their short lives. They describe two main experiments. Experiment 1 is the warmup, and Experiment 2 is the headline result I just mentioned. In experiment 1, the chicks are raised in a VR visual world where they never see anything occlude anything, ever. They only see one virtual object move around an otherwise-empty virtual room. The chicks of course imprint on the object. This phase lasts 4 days. Then we move into the test phase. The test initializes when the chick moves towards the virtual object, which starts in the center of the room. Two virtual opaque screens appear on the sides of the room. In the easier variant of the test, the object moves behind one of the screens, and then nothing else happens for a few minutes. The experimenters measure which screen the chick looks at more. The result: all 8 chicks looked more-than-chance at the screen that the virtual object would be behind, than at the other screen, at least for the first 30 seconds or so after the object disappeared from view. In the harder variant, one of the screens moves to the object, occludes the object, then moves back to its starting point. Again, the experiments measure which screen the chick looks at more. Here, 7 of the 8 chicks looked more-than-chance towards the screen that the virtual object would be behind, at least for 15ish seconds. Moving on to experiment 2, the test phase was the same as the easier variant above - the object moved to behind one of the two opaque virtual screens on the sides. But the preceding 4-day training phase was different for these chicks: instead of never seeing any occlusion events, they witnessed thousands of occlusion events, where the object would go behind a virtual opaque screen, and then after a variable amount of time (0-20 seconds), the screens would lower to reveal that the object was where we might expect (for the "natural world" chicks), or had magically teleported to behind the "wrong" screen (the "unnatural world" chicks). (There was no randomization - each chick lived its whole training-phase in either the natural or unnatural world.) Remarkably, all four chicks in the "natural world" and all four chicks in the "unnatural world" spent more time looking at the screen that the object had disappeared behind, rather than the other one, more than chance, at least for the first 15-30 seconds. In fact, remarkably, there was no difference between the natural-world and unnatural-world chicks! How do we make sense of these results? It's always worth asking: maybe the experiment is garbage? I'm far from an expert, but the methodol...
This week, we're taking a look at Liv Ullman's 2014 adaptation of the August Strindberg play Miss Julie. Starring Colin Farrell alongside an ascendant Jessica Chastain as a servant and mistress engaged in an scandalous flirtation, the film sees Ullman move the location to Northern Ireland and update the narrative with a modern, feminist framing. We get into the psychosexual drama at play and the film's stylistic successes and failures (especially in relation to the more acclaimed 1951 Swedish adaptation), plus we take a look at the long cultural tail of Ingmar Bergman and try to sort through our feelings on Chastain's underwhelming career. Is this the final film in Colin's dark night of the career? Or does his performance here presage the major comeback to come? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this week's issue It is forecasted that there will be a sizable shortage of the ophthalmology workforce relative to demand by the year 2035. Intra-anterior chamber injection of anti-VEGF may be a viable technique for treatment of advanced pediatric vitreoretinal diseases. The biomechanical stability index may serve as a predictive tool in disease progression in patients with abnormal corneal topography. Further understanding of genotype-phenotype relationships in congenital ectopic lens can help provide prognostic information and guide treatment. Older children are more likely to exhibit successful IOP lowering through cyclophotocoagulation in refractory pediatric glaucoma. Stay tuned at the end of the episode for a special announcement featuring Dr. Michael Ullman's new "Eye Chart" app. Normally priced at $10 in the App Store, readers of 'The Lens' can contact Dr. Ullman at mullman@gmail.com, for a promo code to download the "Eye Chart" app free of charge.

Does dream sharing increase empathy and insight? Today meet two English professors who say, "Yes it does!" The Science and Art of Dreaming is their new book. This is a replay from a popular episode recorded in March. Mark starts out by talking about the innocence of dreams and how they tell the truth, even though we often can't recognize it. Julia suggests we can look at dreams as our own art work. Together they describe their process in which Mark guides the discussion of a dream while Julia creates a drawing around the dream on pages torn from Freud's famous book, The Interpretation of Dreams. Mark describes his research which shows that (1) dream sharing increases empathy of group members and (2) people who are high in empathy are more attracted to dreamwork than those who are not. He also touches on human self-domestication and shares recent work suggesting that dream sharing might have been an important part of that process. We take three callers. First John from Santa Cruz describes that he feels sensations in dreams like thorns prickling but not body blows. Steve Popp from the Garden Show then shares a dream about a hooded black cobra lying in square coils. Finally we take a call from Ray of Santa Cruz who dreamt of being chased by a giant bear at Stonehenge. As we reflect during the High Holy Days on issues of life and death, Rabbi Yoshi shares an interview with Lauren Ullmann, a Stanford Business School student and former MIT varsity goaltender player whose life was saved by a donation of peripheral stem cells. Fans of the Search for Meaning podcast will know who made that donation.Determined to use her experience as a team leader and the lessons taught from seeing the whole field as a collegiate goaltender to excel in business, Ullmann interned for the prestigious Bain & Company, eventually becoming a senior associate consultant. Late in 2019, she headed to the San Francisco Bay Area -- where he grandparents lived -- for an externship. The night before running a marathon in early January of 2020, she experienced "horrible, horrible" stomach pain. Though she was able to run the race, it returned several days later. After a miserable week and several blood tests at UCSF, Ullman thought it was the flu or appendicitis. While visiting her grandparents with her mother in town, she was rushed to the Stanford ER at 4:30 a.m. After 11 hours, she was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. Had her mother not been visiting from the East Coast, she may not have gotten the treatment she did when she did.Cancerous tumors were found in her heart and liver. Her liver and kidneys had swollen to such a degree that they compressed her stomach. Weeks of chemotherapy caused her hair to fall out and wiped out her immune system. While the rest of the world was still months away from wearing masks everywhere, she had to wear one with a HEPA filter.Released on Valentine's Day, she traveled back to the East Coast to start treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City. She needed a bone marrow stem cell transplant, and neither of her siblings were good enough matches. She turned to the Be The Match Registry. With only three potential matches and the COVID-19 pandemic unfolding, she miraculously found not only a donor, but a new family.

Does dream sharing increase empathy and insight? Today meet two English professors who say, "Yes it does!" The Science and Art of Dreaming is their new book. Mark starts out by talking about the innocence of dreams and how they tell the truth, even though we often can't recognize it. Julia suggests we can look at dreams as our own art work. Together they describe their process in which Mark guides the discussion of a dream while Julia creates a drawing around the dream on pages torn from Frued's famous book, The Interpretation of Dreams. BIO: Mark Blagrove is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Sleep Laboratory at Swansea University, UK. He is a past-President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. Julia Lockheart is Associate Professor at the Swansea College of Art, University of Wales Trinity St David, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts. Since 2016 they have undertaken public Ullman dream discussions, with Julia simultaneously painting each dream as part of their DreamsID.com collaboration. As we mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we talk to Holocaust survivor Leo Ullman. He was born in Amsterdam in July of 1939, which makes him one of the youngest Holocaust survivors– and the few Holocaust survivors who are still living today. Leo was raised by a Christian family for 796 days. He's since written a book called ‘796 Days' about that experience and his family's eventual escape to the United States after WWII. Hear Leo's incredible story, what life was like for his family before and after the war, why they decided to come to America, and what he thinks about the resurgence in antisemitism and Holocaust denial.
