333: Seattle Seahawks 2021 Draft Recap

Sea Hawkers Podcast for Seattle Seahawks fans

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2021 114:13

John Schneider and Pete Carroll went into this year's 2021 NFL Draft with only three draft picks after using their other picks to acquire known talent. Jamal Adams and Carlos Dunlap were acquired in 2020 and are both under contract to remain with the team through 2021. Gabe Jackson was picked up in a trade this offseason with the Las Vegas Raiders to add to the offensive line after the departure of Mike Iupati. However, the Seahawks have never picked fewer than five players in a draft in the entire history of the franchise. But the Seahawks GM only made two trades on draft day and still finished with only three picks. First off the board for Seattle was WR D'Wayne Eskridge of Western Michigan. The guys talk about the thought process that may have gone into taking a skill player here rather than improving the offensive line, particularly with some of the top centers still on the board. Outside cornerback depth was a concern coming into this last week, and it's well known the type of corner Seattle likes to draft, so why did the Seahawks take Oklahoma cornerback Tre Brown? Pete Carroll may be adapting to what we're seeing in the NFC West and in the NFL. In the sixth round, the Seahawks traded up for offensive tackle Stone Forsythe. Despite some of his perceived weaknesses, taking him that late in the draft was a "no-brainer," but it also highlighted an area where Seattle tended not to budge on what they looked for in the past. Plus, we look at some of the top undrafted free agents. In the second half of the show, we talk about the 49ers selection of Tre Lance with the third overall pick and the decision to trade two future first round picks to make that deal (when maybe they didn't need to). Aaron Rodgers managed to steal the spotlight ahead of the first round, which was almost certainly 100% intentional after what the Packers did to him last year. Do Better call outs go anyone who dragged Russ into the new Rodgers story and to our buddy Gerrad. DK Metcalf gets Better at Life honors along with Dan Hanzus of Around the NFL. 329: The offseason plan for the Seahawks is coming into focus

Sea Hawkers Podcast for Seattle Seahawks fans

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 29, 2021 110:47

After two weeks of free agency, the plan for the Seahawks offseason is becoming clear. The large contract they traded for on the offensive line by acquiring Gabe Jackson is essentially swapped out with the departure of Jarran Reed and his contract on the defensive line. The return of Carlos Dunlap may be the most important move and the reduction in his salary allows for the addition of defensive end Kerry Hyder and the return of Al Woods to the interior. It's also appears they are sacrificing their full participation in the draft and instead trading for proven veteran talent. The San Francisco 49ers made a huge move this past week by trading two future first round picks to move up to the third pick overall. We get into the history of NFL trades into the top three picks to show there is risk involved. However, for a team that has seen success with an average quarterback, the potential reward is easily worth the risk in their case. We discuss the move in context with the other NFC West teams who have been working to upgrade their rosters this offseason. The fact that the 49ers are giving up the 12th overall pick and two more first round picks just to move up nine spots in the draft demonstrates how ridiculous the Chicago Bears reported trade package for Russell Wilson was. But it hasn't stopped people like former general manager Mike Tannenbaum from suggesting that the Seahawks could still move on from Wilson for (once again) Sam Darnold. In the second half of the show, one of our members of the Flock is considering adjusting his relationship status if it can somehow help the Seahawks get back to championship form.  Adam goes after the owners for nearing completion for their push to a 17-game schedule and Brandan goes after Mike Florio for his rooting interest surrounding the Seahawks quarterback. Better at Life honors go to a new season and to the Miami Dolphins for giving Adam the perfect football gift. Support the show Get in the Flock! Daniel Popper from the Athletic has come out with a blueprint for the Chargers to become contenders and we get into why communication and play calling will have to be much better in 2021 for the team. Some of the other things that have to go right for the Chargers in 2021 are staying healthy, fixing the offensive line and signing several key internal free agents. We break down how plausible it is for the Chargers to attain these goals and add one very important goal of our own. We also get why it was a good thing that the team didn't pursue their former wide receiver Tyrell Williams because of the production they have gotten from young players and why signing Gabe Jackson is something the Chargers absolutely need to consider. Fal Allen from Anderson Valley Brewing Co. and Gabe Jackson from The Beverage People are both on Brew Ha Ha to talk to Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras. Fal Allen was on this show two years ago, in August of 2018, talking about his Gose beer. The Beverage People sells kits for brewing specific types of beer, including one that uses Anderson Valley Brewing’s recipe for Gose style beer. This is a German style that AVB has been making and now its recipe is available to home brewers. The Beverage People has been supplying Sonoma County home brewers since 1980 with equipment, ingredients and expertise, for making beer and wine at home but also mead, kombucha, cheese, olives, and more. During the pandemic a lot of people have started baking bread, and they all agree that these folks should also try brewing beer. Gose is a German sour wheat beer that is one of the oldest beer recipes still in use, even if it is very unusual even for a German beer. It was popular in the 1300s then later in the 1700s and 1800s in Leipzig it became popular. Then it became popular in the 1980s in Germany. Fal Allen has actually written a book about Gose style beer. It is 4.2% alcohol. It’s a new trend in craft beer to have less alcohol. Herlinda says that in England there is an extra tax on beer over 4.5% alcohol, which goes to transportation services. Gabe Jackson talks about the importance of having pleasant and productive activities during the pandemic “mayhem” as Steve Jaxon calls it. Herlinda mentions that they are always available to give personal advice to their customers about how to use their equipment, and that this is nicer and more productive than just looking things up on line by yourself. Fal Allen mentions that the next recipe that Anderson Valley Brewing Company will provide to The Beverage People may be their very popular Boont Amber Ale. They remember the late Byron Birch, who founded The Beverage People. Gabe Jackson calls him their “spirit guy” and says that beer was like his religion. When Byron started the store, there were almost no books about home brewing, but that he had written one. Fal Allen started in beer as a home brewer, using Byron’s book and remembers him as an important mentor. The Anderson Valley Brewing Company brewpub is closed right now and Fal Allen says they are renovating it during the closure to turn the entire 23 acres into a German-style beer garden. There is camping space for over 4000 people, between the brewery and a nearby park. In 2021 they hope to return to their usual late-April date for the beer festival and also possibly Oktoberfest. They also have an 18-hole disc golf course. Herlinda mentions Russian River Brewing Co. is also promoting Pliny for President 2020 and their Black is Beautiful beer. The outside patio is open at RRBC and the bottle shop is open. You can sit outside at their 4th street Santa Rosa location. The Beverage People's staff are always available to give advice about using their stuff. Visit the Beverage People dot com.  They have all you need to make beer, cider, wine, cheese, kombucha, olives and more. You can order anything and pick it up in person at their store on Piner Road, or have it delivered to you.

Black is Beautiful is the cooperative fund raising recipe from Marcus Baskerville of Weathered Soul Brewing in Austin, Texas. Natalie Cilurzo calls in to talk to Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras today on Brew Ha Ha. Black is Beautiful now has over 1000 participants and they will taste and describe Russian River Brewing Co.'s version of it today. Natalie describes how the city of Santa Rosa has closed five blocks of 4th Street downtown, from now until October 15, so that restaurants, including the Russian River Brewing Co. downtown Santa Rosa location, can provide additional outdoor seating with social distancing. There is a little parklet in front of their place. Bayside Church donated their time and materials to build parklets for the restaurants that wanted them. Natalie really appreciates that effort. In Windsor, Russian River Brewing Co. is closed for dining and open for beer and food take-out. They do have tables and chairs out in front so people can bring their take-out outside and have it there, but the beer garden is closed for the time being. Their third batch of Pliny for President 2020 has been released. Herlinda gave some to John O'Hurley, the famous actor who played Peterman on Seinfeld, there in the studio. As they taste the Black is Beautiful ale, Natalie describes it as thick and rich, an Imperial Stout that is "definitely not for the faint of heart." Russian River Brewing Co. has also released their edition of the Black is Beautiful project. That's the recipe that Marcus Baskerville of Weathered Soul Brewing has launched. Marcus was on Brew Ha Ha a few weeks ago, on June 11, to describe it. He invites brewers to use the beer to raise money for their choice of local causes. Russian River Brewing Co. has chosen to support Legal Aid of Sonoma County and The California Innocence Project. Pliny runs for President every four years on the Keg Party ticket, this is his fourth campaign. They thought it would be a beer they could use to celebrate reopening, but since reopening is postponed, it's for shelter in place now and they are releasing it in cans now. California customers can order it or get it at the breweries. It is a double dry hop. It has a bright, fruity citrussy beer. She gets grapefruit and citronella. It's based on Pliny the Elder but "even better." Gabe Jackson from the Beverage People was going to come in but is busy. Herlinda will be curing olives this Fall, with help from The Beverage People. Herlinda says Gabe wanted the audience to know that they are available to give you advice about what you will be doing with their equipment. Today's beer market is the subject of today's Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon. He and Herlinda Heras talk with Tara Nurin, Forbes magazine correspondent who writes about the beverage and spirits markets. Her June 30 article in Forbes magazine is called "Alcohol Sales Are Not Spiking or Even Stabilizing, Here's Why the Misconception Matters. She says she has heard reports in the media saying that alcohol sales are supposedly booming during the Coronavirus crisis, but she knows well, that is not the case, which her article explains in great detail. People have been buying more from liquor stores, but overall sales are down. So much revenue comes from public sales in restaurants and lots of other public locations, which have been closed. The retail sales increase does not make up for the losses. Alcohol sales have only spiked in to-go sales, like everything from supermarkets to liquor stores and convenience stores. Breweries that were only selling draft were in the most trouble, and those that were able to start canning or who had recently added canning lines, had an easier time. Our guest two weeks ago, Brian Hunt of Moonlight Brewing Co., is an example. It is especially hard for restaurants that were closed, then some were allowed to open but now are closing again. This puts strain on management, finance and personnel. Herlinda also reports that the National Brewers Association had to lay off some staff. Russian River Brewing Company is open in its Windsor and Santa Rosa locations. Check the website for up-to-the-minute opening hours, menus and Coronavirus precautionary rules. Gabe Jackson from The Beverage People is also in today. The Beverage People, since 1980, has provided the Sonoma County community with everything anyone needs to make beer and wine at home, as well as many other kinds of fermented beverages and foods, such as cider, cheese, olives, kombucha and more. They have classes on brewing, winemaking, cider making, cheesemaking, etc. They sell a beer kit for a 5-gallon batch of home brewed beer. They have brought the brewing tank to the studio, and also some hops and cold live yeast. They sell small amounts of ingredients and they pack yeast especially for 5-gallon batches. There are short and long classes all the time on all their subjects. If you have an olive tree you can harvest the fruit and process the olives at home. You can do Greek style (the dry salt method, -ed.) or with lye. (There is also a brine process.) Tara Nurin calls in from New Orleans, at Tales of the Cocktail. It is the biggest cocktail party and bartender convention in the world. There are seminars and parties and tastings, all for the community of people who work in the beverage business.
