Embark on a cosmic journey with me as we journey through the mysteries of the Vedic deity, Ganesha. Well-known for removing obstacles and opening pathways to success, we'll delve into his significance both symbolically and in our everyday lives. As the divine offspring of  Mother Durga/ Parvati and Masculine Shiva in the Vedic pantheon, Ganesha has the power to dissolve patterns, behaviors, and blockages that confine us. Honoring Ganesha/Ganapati, the principle that removes obstacles, during  the month of September 2023 is very auspicious. It's a good time to  learn new mantras to help clear obstacles in your lives.   The celebration of Ganesha is called Ganesh Chaturthi, a Hindu festival commemorating the birth of the Hindu god Ganesha which occurs this year on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 in India.Jill reads the Ganesha Kavacham in English which bestows protective powers to all who listen to these powerful words.  Sanskrit Mantras are sacred sound formulas that remove obstacles and bestow blessings. Further, we'll explore the transformative effects of the Ganesha mantras, particularly the one comprising six seed sounds (Om Shrim Hrim Klim Glaum Gum Ganapatayei, Vara Varada Sarva Janam Me Vasha Manaya Swaha).  As Jill  guides you through the chant, starting slow and gradually increasing the tempo, you'll experience firsthand the power of invoking Ganesha's presence. By the end of the episode, you'll not only have a profound understanding of this Vedic deity but also practical ways of incorporating Ganesha mantras into your routine. Enjoy this his enlightening exploration of Ganesha, and together, let's clear those obstacles that stand in our way!1) Om Ekadantaya Namaha Result: To bring one pointedness to the mind.  Chant this mantra to achieve a single minded state of mind, having which united with devotion, one will achieve everything. 2) Om Ucchista Ganapatayei NamahaResult:  To destroy negativity within or coming from outside of you. Will clear hadred, inner or outer enemies and demonic ego.3) Om Shrim Gum Ganapatayei NamahaResult:  To obtain wealth and prosperity.  Combines the seed sound "Shrim" for Prosperity Goddess Lakshmi, with the Ganesha foundation or mula mantra to remove obstacles.4) Om Sri Siddhi Vinayakaya NamahaResult: To receive spiritual blessings, and magical energies from Ganesha.5) Om Shrim Hrim Klim Glaum Gum GanapatayeiVara Varada Sarva Janam Me Vasha Manaya Swaha)Result: To bring thins under some kind of control, so long as they are truly your concern. Hello Everyone This is a mythological Story of Lord Ganesha . Ganapati is one of the most important gods in Hindu mythology and he is also worshipped in Jainism and Buddhism. For the Ganapatya Hindu sect, Ganesha is the most important deity. Ganesha is highly recognisable with his elephant head and human body, representing the soul (atman) and the physical (maya) respectively. He is also the patron of writers, travellers, students, commerce, and new projects (for which he removes obstacles from one's path) and is rather fond of sweets, to the slight detriment of his figure. Early Life Ganesha is the son of Shiva and Parvati and he is the brother of Karthikeya (or Subrahmanya), the god of war. He was created by his mother using earth which she moulded into the shape of a boy. As Shiva was away on his meditative wanderings, Parvati set her new son as guard while she bathed. Unexpectedly, Shiva returned home and, on finding the boy, and outraged at his impudence in claiming he was Parvati's son, Shiva called for his gang of demons, the bhutaganas, who fought ferociously with the boy. However, the youngster easily held his own against such fearsome adversaries and Vishnu was forced to intervene in the form of Maya and, whilst the boy was distracted by her beauty, the demons, or Shiva himself, lopped off his head. At the commotion, Parvati ran from her bath and remonstrated with Shiva for so summarily killing their son. Repentant, Shiva ordered a new head to be found for the boy and, as the first animal available was an elephant, so Ganesha gained a new head and became the most distinctive of the Hindu gods. As a reward for his great courage in fighting the demons, Shiva made Ganesha the leader of the bhutaganas, hence his name.

Is Yoga Cultural Appropriation?

Swami Ji, the OG

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 20, 2022 15:55

What is cultural appropriation? Cultural appropriation is defined as the process by which Intellectual property, artifacts, dance, clothing/fashion, language, music, food, religious symbols, medicine, wellness practices and more are used for purposes that were unintended by the original culture and may even be offensive to that culture.  With yoga, this can often be seen through the adaptation of practices in ways that sterilize them for the West by stripping the spiritual aspects of the philosophy, by refusal to use Sanskrit words, or by removing the symbols or stories that exemplify the teaching. Another example of cultural appropriation is at the opposite extreme through the glamorization of yoga through commercialism and marketing. Within the modern Western yoga community, Om symbols, Sanskrit scriptures, and Hindu deities are emblazoned on clothing, yoga mats, and even as tattoos on practitioners' bodies! After decades of involvement with a classical lineage of yoga, I have been accused of cultural appropriation. Indeed, I do have a Sanskrit name given to me by my guru in India. I use my legal name in my daily, worldly life. When teaching, I wear the orange clothing of being a swami. I wear regular clothing other times, though I do have a lot of orange clothes! When I teach, I use the Sanskrit terms, but I add the English equivalent until my students embrace the meaning. I have statues of a variety of deities within my living space. I also have many other artifacts and works of art from other cultures.  I do not feel my choices involve cultural appropriation, rather I believe what I practice is cultural appreciation. As an American within a global community, what hasn't come from another culture? To me cultural appreciation involves respectfully seeking to learn and understand while honoring the beliefs of others, giving credit to the culture from which information has come, and most importantly knowing the significance of what is being utilized. From the time of my first trip to India more than 40 years ago, I have felt a familiarity, a deep connection with the culture that far surpasses what I've felt when traveling to so many other countries around the world. And I believe that my involvement with yoga came from and continues to manifest from this place of deep connection and cultural appreciation. Rather than sanitizing yoga of symbols and stories that have arisen from the ancient culture of India, I appreciate them and use them to further illustrate the depth of the teachings. It's also important to understand that because yoga is based on the science of living, the symbols and stories that have been associated with yoga are as “modern” now as they were in the past.  The history of storytelling is a part of virtually all cultures as a learning tool to help us connect more fully with life and guide us to find our better self. In telling the stories we are offering easily remembered life lessons and this should not be confused with advocating for any religion. The stories help us better understand how the difficulties we face that are the same as those faced for eons across cultures and offer lessons that can improve self-awareness and self-efficacy. Today I will tell you one of my favorite stories. It is the story of Ganesh, one of the most popular deities both in the West and in India. Perhaps you have seen Ganesh? He is the elephant-headed, pot-bellied, eater of sweets! He is also the son of Shiva, who represents the universal consciousness and his consort Parvati, who represents the universal energy. These two forces underpin the entirety of the universe. Shiva liked to go out hunting with his hordes known as the Ganas. These were all sorts of beings that were frightening to be around but were true devotees to Shiva. When Shiva went out, Parvati enjoyed the quiet solitude by rubbing her body with turmeric paste and then bathing. However, Shiva knew this habit and often came home early just to annoy her as happens between couples! After this happened a few times, the next time Shiva left, Parvati took the turmeric paste and molded it into a small boy, then breathed into him bringing him to life. She declared he would be her loyal son and posted him on guard duty outside the door of the house. It's important here to remember that Parvati is the embodiment of universal energy and imbued her son with great powers.  After some time, Shiva came home only to find this strange boy sitting outside blocking the way preventing Shiva from entering his own house! This angered Shiva who tried to push past him only to find this little guy had incredible strength. At this point, Shiva turned to his hordes and told them to destroy the little boy but all failed. This surprised Shiva and in his divine fury a huge battle ensued and at some point, the boy's head was severed, killing him, and in the chaos of the moment it rolled away! At this point, due to the commotion, Parvati comes out from her bath and sees what has happened. Imagine what happens when the universal energy gets angry! She decided that her only recourse was to destroy the entirety of creation.  Brahma, who represents the lord of creation had been out with Shiva and his hordes was a bit dismayed about this, and he began to plead with Parvati to reconsider. Calming her down, Parvati said she would refrain from doing so if two conditions were met. One, that her son would be brought back to life, and two that he be forever worshipped before all other deities. They all agreed that this would be done, and Brahma was sent with orders to either find the head or to bring back the head of the first creature he found. After some time, Brahma returned with the head of an elephant and Shiva placed it on the body. He then breathed life into him, saying Ganesha would become his son as well and gave him the status of being foremost among the deities and the leader of all the Ganas. Ganesha is also referred to as Ganapati, the leader of the Ganas. And they all lived happily ever after. In reviewing the symbolism of the story Parvati represents the cosmic energy that sleeps within us. The process of classical yoga involves the process of purification to awaken this energy, to empower us to reach our higher consciousness. The bath symbolizes the process of purification to release us from what binds us to the external manifestations of life. The turmeric paste is bright yellow and symbolizes the earth element. Once this purification occurs, we meet our higher consciousness which may arrive unannounced! One reason that Ganesh is so loved is that he is considered the remover of obstacles. However, many don't realize that first he is the obstacle! Associated with the earth element, he also represents the ego, that aspect of us that can keep us from the process of purification through meditation and knowing our true nature. He is protecting the cosmic energy in the story. He the obstacle to purification. The cutting off of the head symbolizes the cutting of the ego. It is the ego with its likes and dislikes that keeps us bound to the material life and prevents us from engaging with our spiritual potential. To become successful in the process of purification, we must realize how the ego is the obstacle and it needs to be overcome. Replacing Ganesh's head with that of an elephant represents the replacement of our little, petty ego with a big universal ego. This doesn't mean becoming egotistical, rather there is disidentification with the small self and connection to the more universal Self Ganesh is therefore the one who puts the obstacle there and has dominion over removing it. Does this sound like you? Who puts your biggest obstacles in your way? And who removes them? The expression, “you are your own worst enemy” might be true. And it's often true that we have big breakthroughs in discovering our inner strength when we are challenged by life's circumstances.  When we are in the middle of the battle, we can't always defeat the obstacles preventing us from moving forward. But when we get the guidance we need to reach deep inside and find our power, those obstacles can be removed. Remember the story. When I see or think of Ganesh I see that part of me, that ego-driven self that gets in my own way from being all that I can be. I am Ganesh. I am the obstacle and I have the power to remove it as well. The story of Ganesh symbolizes each of us.

Ganapati — the much loved deity Ganesha — transcends spiritual boundaries.Venerable Zasep Rinpoche, introducing a teaching event, explained his versatile popularity: "Ganesha is honoured as a Yidam deity as well as a Dharma Protector in both the Hindu tradition and the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Ganesha is a protector of Dharma practice and prosperity; he also removes hindrances and obstacles.Ganesha, Vajrayogini, and Kurukulla are the three red deities, part of the thirteen golden Dharmas of the Sakypa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Ganesha is one of the fifteen directional protectors – in that group he is known as a Vinayaka."Learn more about this obstacle-removing practice in Mahayana Buddhism...Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/BuddhaWeekly)

In this discourse, three questions have been answered by Om Swami. The first question asked was- Who was the first person to start the celebration of guru purnima and when did it start and why was it started? [Origin of guru purnima] Om Swami says that there are different stories from different places related to guru purnima. This trend is not very old, but the first circumambulation of Mahadev was done by Ganapati. So, that would be the first instance of the first guru purnima he says. Later, as people celebrated other festivals and paid respects to their deity and gods, it was felt that there should be someday dedicated to their guru too when they could show their love and respect towards him. As one cannot ask their guru's age, guru purnima became that day when people celebrated their gurus, by paying their respects and love. A night of full moon was chosen, to signify that just like the full moon their guru was complete too. Festivals were like a break from the mundane for the householders. There were no festivals from the month of May to October, therefore, guru purnima came to be celebrated in the month of June-July, says Om Swami. The second question asked was- How to maintain and keep the sanctity in the relationship between a guru and a disciple? For sometimes certain actions by some disciples look wrong. Om Swami says that when someone requests for discipleship he never looks into their good or bad deeds etc but accepts them without any judgment. He says that once he has accepted them as they are, he never lets go of them. To maintain purity, whenever possible one should do good deeds according to their capacity he says. The third question asked was- If someone takes him on as their guru right away, will he accept them as their disciple immediately? Om Swami says that before initiating someone he has to see if they are ready. When he initiates someone it is a formalization of a relationship that is already in a devotee's heart. This discourse is an answer to the question as to which parampara (lineage) Om Swami is from and where did it start. This is the second part of the series on Om Swami's parampara. Om Swami says that his guru Naga Baba took initiation of aghor sadhana from Hari Nam Das aghori, and while doing his sadhana he lived in a cemetery for eight years. Naga Baba later also got initiation of Sri Vidya from a buddhist lama and during that period he remained at the shakti peet itself for twelve years. Mohan Das udasin was Naga Baba's guru and Naga Baba got initiation for bhakti and love(parental love) from him. All these different practices came together like different flowers bound in a bouquet and was given and received by Om Swami. When Om Swami received all this, he had to see as to what would work in today's time and world. All this came to him before he started his main sadhana and they had become a good mixture. When he started his sadhana of bhagawan Mahadev, Ma Shakti and of the Udasin lineage he had in addition with him a mantra from his uncle who was an ardent devotee of Shiva. In Badrinath he received a mantra from Bhairavi Ma. His guru Naga Baba was initiated by a naga saint with the sabar mantra. Om Swami says, that he had with him some mantras from Tantra, some mantras from the Vedas and some Sabar mantras plus his own sadhanas from this life time and some from his previous ones. Now with all this within him, he started his sadhana. He sat in a cave to first bring one pointedness in his mind and then started on his sadhana. First he awakened the Lalita Sahasranama. Then he awakened the mantra which was given by Bhairavi Ma. After this, he left the cave and went into the forests where he awakened the mantra of Ma Gayatri. The kriya that was received by him before, and due to which he was able to talk to his deity was completely championed. As soon as Ved Mata Gayatri's mantra was awakened, his doubts regarding his ability to get answers to his questions from his inner consciousness completely vanished and that left him with no doubt of the truth. Soon after this, he awakened the Vishnu Sahasranama. After this, he started his main sadhana of Sri Vidya and after completing it he went to Kamyakya to honour the Vedic way and as was instructed by Ma Tripurasundari. In Kamyakya, he received a Tantra initiation which brought everything together and it became complete. Om Swami says, after this he went to Rudra nath, and later from there he went to Bengal where he awakened a mantra of bhagawan Ganapati. After this he went to Rudra nath again where he completed a sadhana and on completion he came to the ashram. After coming to the ashram, in eight months, he made the fifteen nityas in the Sri Vidya occupy their respective places. Om Swami says, the lineage, now took a different form. The different lineages were like an inverted tree with all the branches spreading in different directions. Now from the different branches there was one trunk and roots. He says, all these mantras are very ancient and they are not written down but are passed on orally even today, and that is the reason he is cautious and thinks before giving a mantra to anyone. It is a sacred heritage of the saints and sages from ancient times and a person's motive for a mantra needs to be looked into before giving it. He says, the thought that someone's problems can be fixed through the use of mantra is like conducting a business. It will neither help the giver nor the receiver.
