63rd verse: “You have listened to the great spiritual truth and My instructions. Now, you do whatever you want. Act according to your own conviction and understanding.”There is no compulsion from the teacher, Lord Krishna. He encourages the student to use his own intellect and conviction. This is because everyone in the world is at a different level of spiritual evolution. The goal is to experience the truth, not blindly believe.Swami Vivekananda expounded in the parliament of religions that spiritual life is like climbing the top of a hill. Once we are at the top, we see many trails leading to the top. When we are on the trail, we may think that is the only path. Similarly, when someone is early in their spiritual life, at the level of belief and rituals, they think only their path is right.66th verse: “When you feel that all your efforts are in vain, you should very sincerely and mentally give the entire responsibility to God. Then you do not have to worry about anything.”There are two interpretations of this verse. Ramanuja interprets it as sincerely taking refuge in God and becoming a tool in God's hands. Shankaracharya's interpretation is that all problems have a solution at the spiritual level. Psychological problems can only have a permanent solution at a higher, spiritual level. Shankaracharya says that the real reason behind Arjuna's delusion and inactivity is his wrong perception of his true nature – lack of atma-jnanam. Once Arjuna understood his true nature, his delusions vanished, as he states in the 73rd verse.67th verse: “I have taught you this spiritual truth. You should not teach this to a person who does not have the following qualities: (1) a sense of devotion, sanctity and sacredness (2) willing to practice it with spiritual humility, service and discipline (3) has great respect and appreciation for the teacher.”St. Matthew has a similar statement. The effectiveness of spiritual teachings depends on the readiness of the listener's mind. A sense of sanctity and sacredness from the disciple towards the teacher and heritage (Parampara) is important. There is a story of Durvasa rishi and Indra. Indra came on an elephant and had a spiritual conversation with the sage. Pleased, the sage gave him a sacred flower garland. Indra was on the elephant and without paying attention, put the garland on the elephant's neck, who dropped it and crushed it under his feet. Since Indra did not show respect towards the sacred garland, the sage cursed him.68th verse: “Those who teach this to people who are ready to listen and understand its true meaning with a sense of sanctity and sacredness, they will attain supreme liberation.”69th verse: “Anyone who tries to preach this spiritual truth, he is dear to Me and he will be spiritually elevated.”Teaching these spiritual truths itself is a spiritual practice and becomes a road for spiritual progress – even if it does not lead to spiritual growth of the listener. Our mind constantly accumulates ideas. Instead of getting toxic food, even mechanical listening to spiritual ideas has benefits. For complete effectiveness, the mind should be ready.

Monk and scholar Gauranga Darshan Das graces our podcast with his profound insights, guiding us through the rich landscape of Vedic wisdom and its place in the hustle of contemporary life. We embark on a journey to discover how the venerable teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam remain undiluted while striking a chord with modern seekers. The conversation dives into the sanctity of the Parampara, the succession of spiritual teachers, examining how their blessings and insights ensure the purity of these ancient texts. Navigating the waters of spirituality, we also scrutinize the thin line between healthy discernment and unhelpful criticism, dissecting the virtues that define a genuine spiritual guide. Gauranga Darshan Das provides a fresh viewpoint on relationships through the lens of monkhood, revealing it as a journey toward universal love rather than renunciation. As we explore the inherent qualities of the Supreme God, we learn how they reflect within ourselves, influencing the way we forge connections with the divine and our fellow beings. Closing the episode, our esteemed guest shares pragmatic wisdom on deepening our divine relationship, particularly through the potent Hare Krishna mantra, making this episode a treasure trove for anyone seeking to nurture their spiritual growth amidst the demands of modern existence. Do watch HG Gaurmandal Das, Vice-President Hare Krishna Movement- Mumbai giving lecture on Srimad Bhagavatam. Human society, at the present moment, is not in the darkness of oblivion. It has made rapid progress in the field of material comforts, education and economic development throughout the entire world. But there is a pinprick somewhere in the social body at large, and therefore there are large-scale quarrels, even over less important issues. There is need of a clue as to how humanity can become one in peace, friendship and prosperity with a common cause. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam will fill this need, for it is a cultural presentation for the re-spiritualization of the entire human society. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam should be introduced also in the schools and colleges, for it is recommended by the great student-devotee Prahlāda Mahārāja in order to change the demoniac face of society. We round things off with a discussion of Raj and DK's GUNS AND GULAABS starring Dulquer Salmaan, Gulshan Devaiah, Rajkumar Rao, Adarsh Gourav, and others before launching into our main review: 1993's PARAMPARA. Directed by Yash Chopra, this was Saif Ali Khan's debut film and it took us to many unexpected, half-remembered places. Starring Sunil Dutt, Vinod Khanna, Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Neelam, Raveena Tandon, Ashwini Bhave, Ramya Krishnan, and many others, this is the kind of Hindi movie that doesn't really get made any more.
Today we have Dr. Keshavchaitanya Kunte with us on Audiogyan. He is a Harmonium player, composer, and musicologist. Keshavchaitanya Sir received extensive training in Hindustani Art music, for Harmonium under the able guidance of Dr. Arawind Thatte. For vocal music from Pt. Mohanrao Karve and Dr. Ashok Da. Ranade for musicology. We'll try to document Keshavchaitanya Sir's thoughts on parampara (tradition) and paddhati (methodology) in the context of Hindustani Music. Just as a disclaimer, these subjects are studies of a lifetime and it's almost impossible to pack in an hour or so… Please consider these as conversation starters. Also before we begin, a special thanks to Dakshina Dwarka Foundation and Baithak Foundation for introducing me to Chaitanya sir. I met him at a workshop organized in Pune in 2022 on Talking with Tradition. This Audiogyan will be in Marathi and English Questions What according to you is Prampara and Paddhati? I know these are 2 massive subjects but just a brief introduction will help. What are the main 5 categories of Indian music? (That Dr. Ashok Ranade spoke about) Do all of them have paddhati? Seems like all music will have paddhati but does all of them have parampara? How do you define parampara in Music? In classical music, you are supposed to undergo rigorous training to master what? Paddhati? When and how are you allowed to experiment? In the music world, we hear this often, “The Lalit that morning by Aamir Khan will be etched in the heart for life”. What is the significance of time and place in this context? Which aspect of parampara and which aspect of paddhati keep the relationship? What according to you is the difference between “Shastrokta sangeet” and “Shastriya sangeet”? A Unique Way of Afforestation: MaitiDo you find any connection with a girl leaving her home after marriage and afforestation? Episode Notes An experienced Human Resources professional and a dedicated Art Enthusiast, I am the Director, Gurukul Studios. I spearhead all the Projects at Gurukul. I bring to the table, strong corporate and business experience of aviation industry with companies like Cathay Pacific and Emirates. At Gurukul, I have established distinct methodologies and fair business practices with a vision to be a culturally rooted yet progressive dance organisation! It is currently one of the leading Indian classical dance academy in the Middle East with branches in India and Switzerland. I have made path-breaking forays into the Dubai Academia and taken Gurukul Art Outreach Programs to several academic and art forums. Gurukul Dubai, works closely with GEMS Modern Academy and other leading schools in the region. As a conscious decision of our Corporate Social Responsibility policy, we worked with specially abled students on SNF, Dubai and Al Noor. Gurukul Dubai was established by Pali Chandra and me, in 2007. We provide quality and classical dance education to more than 350 students in Dubai, and have started operations in Zurich and Bangalore (India). We are true practitioners of Indian Classical Dance syllabus of ISTD, UK , and strongly believe, that internationally it is one of the the most compatible syllabi. We have been holding ISTD exams annually since 2012 and have enabled and supported approximately 74 in 2012, 91 in 2013, 128 in 2014, 127 in 2015,165 in 2016 and 205 in 2017. Whilst the numbers speak of the popularity and acceptance of the syllabus through us, we at Gurukul have ensured quality education and hence the results. We adhere to the syllabus guidelines for all levels from CEP to Grade 6, with a focus on ISTD safe dance practices. Many workshops by visiting faculty have been organised by Gurukul to help maintain standards. Some of my successful projects include the 3 days Kathak Festival, Sufi Noor in 2009 and 2012, Five Elements, (2010) Navarasa (2013), Naach – 100 Years of Bollywood (2014), Taalmala (2016), Navinayika (2015), Lasya (2018), Parampara - an annual event of Gurukul wherein we take our students from all our centres to India - to learn from the maestros, to name just a few. My past assignments include those with the Emirates Group as Human Resource Specialist, Commercial Division, Dubai and Cathay Pacific Airways, Vancouver/Canada and Hong Kong.A people's person at heart, a mentor and an executive decision maker, I worked hard to make Gurukul a well recognised centre for ISTD education and a place for dance lovers to connect with. I must confess that this could not have been done without the artistic guidance of Pali Chandra and my pro-active and committed facilitators and admin teams.! India and specially, the City of Bangalore, holds immense potential for dance education based on ISTD syllabus. With the very first studio that opened last month (December 2017) in one of the most centrally located communities on Wood Street, off Brigade Road, I can clearly visualise reach of our programs with ISTD at its heart ! As a child I had learnt kathak dance for 7 years under the able guidance of Guru Vikram Singhe and am currently being trained under Pali Chandra for Vocational Course of ISTD. These discourses by Om Swami are on parampara. This is the third part of it. Om Swami says, that in the science of mantras, a sankalpa(resolution)and diksha has a lot of importance. A sankalpa makes the probability of a person completing a sadhana successfully much more. Whenever, one is able to take and complete smaller sankalpas , the bigger ones will also get completed and it makes one realise that this whole life is also like a sankalp. For, one has to just make a resolution to lead a happy and contented life. A person who is firm on resolutions would have learnt the art of it and nobody can sway them away from their determination towards their resolution. Om Swami says that there is no limit to madness in this world. But, the energy of this madness can be channelized and it can either be turned towards building spiritual advancement to oneself or doing some good for the society. Or, this madness can be channelized towards harming themselves or others. This is totally an individual and a personal choice. Om Swami says, that it is a huge responsibility for a guru to give a mantra to an individual and getting them connected to the parampara. A mantra received from a guru, if passed to others, will give no benefit to the recipient as well as the giver, as the giver has not gathered any merits firstly by chanting and becoming one with it. Only when someone reaches the sixth or seventh step in diksha can they give the mantra ahead. Till then it cannot be given and this is one of the key rules of the parampara. This is the reason for the seven steps in deeksha. A guru who keeps all the knowledge to himself, and does not give it ahead will lead himself to ruin. Deeksha is only given to a person, who comes with total humility and surrender. Om Swami says that he has spoken about the parampara briefly in these discourses but if god wills then at some point he may write about it in more detail. Listen to the full discourse to get a proper understanding on this beautiful topic. This discourse is an answer to the question as to which parampara (lineage) Om Swami is from and where did it start. This is the second part of the series on Om Swami's parampara. Om Swami says that his guru Naga Baba took initiation of aghor sadhana from Hari Nam Das aghori, and while doing his sadhana he lived in a cemetery for eight years. Naga Baba later also got initiation of Sri Vidya from a buddhist lama and during that period he remained at the shakti peet itself for twelve years. Mohan Das udasin was Naga Baba's guru and Naga Baba got initiation for bhakti and love(parental love) from him. All these different practices came together like different flowers bound in a bouquet and was given and received by Om Swami. When Om Swami received all this, he had to see as to what would work in today's time and world. All this came to him before he started his main sadhana and they had become a good mixture. When he started his sadhana of bhagawan Mahadev, Ma Shakti and of the Udasin lineage he had in addition with him a mantra from his uncle who was an ardent devotee of Shiva. In Badrinath he received a mantra from Bhairavi Ma. His guru Naga Baba was initiated by a naga saint with the sabar mantra. Om Swami says, that he had with him some mantras from Tantra, some mantras from the Vedas and some Sabar mantras plus his own sadhanas from this life time and some from his previous ones. Now with all this within him, he started his sadhana. He sat in a cave to first bring one pointedness in his mind and then started on his sadhana. First he awakened the Lalita Sahasranama. Then he awakened the mantra which was given by Bhairavi Ma. After this, he left the cave and went into the forests where he awakened the mantra of Ma Gayatri. The kriya that was received by him before, and due to which he was able to talk to his deity was completely championed. As soon as Ved Mata Gayatri's mantra was awakened, his doubts regarding his ability to get answers to his questions from his inner consciousness completely vanished and that left him with no doubt of the truth. Soon after this, he awakened the Vishnu Sahasranama. After this, he started his main sadhana of Sri Vidya and after completing it he went to Kamyakya to honour the Vedic way and as was instructed by Ma Tripurasundari. In Kamyakya, he received a Tantra initiation which brought everything together and it became complete. Om Swami says, after this he went to Rudra nath, and later from there he went to Bengal where he awakened a mantra of bhagawan Ganapati. After this he went to Rudra nath again where he completed a sadhana and on completion he came to the ashram. After coming to the ashram, in eight months, he made the fifteen nityas in the Sri Vidya occupy their respective places. Om Swami says, the lineage, now took a different form. The different lineages were like an inverted tree with all the branches spreading in different directions. Now from the different branches there was one trunk and roots. He says, all these mantras are very ancient and they are not written down but are passed on orally even today, and that is the reason he is cautious and thinks before giving a mantra to anyone. It is a sacred heritage of the saints and sages from ancient times and a person's motive for a mantra needs to be looked into before giving it. He says, the thought that someone's problems can be fixed through the use of mantra is like conducting a business. It will neither help the giver nor the receiver. Listen to the full discourse to get in-depth knowledge on this beautiful topic. Timeline: 00:00 Start 09:44 How old are the mantras 10:05 Why is it that mantras are given to people cautiously 11:04 can mantras be used to solve problems 11:54 What is the importance of Sankalp in mantra Diksha or mantra sadhana Thumbnail, Intro and outro animation: Sushree Svadha Om Piano music: Adi Sharma BREATHE / SMILE / MEDITATE/ LET GO -----------------------
The question asked was - What is Om Swami's parampara(lineage) and from where did it start? This is part 1, in a three-part series. Om Swami says that he had plans of writing about this in detail someday, but for now he will address it briefly. He says, Om Swami which is the name of a thought or a light, can be called a tradition but not a person. For, a person can only be attached to one lineage. But, even his guru, Naga Baba was attached to more than one lineage or tradition, as he got initiation from different places. Om Swami says, that according to the tradition about which he has knowledge, the very first mantra was given by bhagvaan Narayan to Mahalakshmi Ma, to help humans redeem themselves by turning their thoughts and devotion towards him. Later, this same mantra was received by the Sanat kumaras, then by rishi Narad, from bhagwan Narayan himself. Dev rishi Narad started giving this mantra to some of his closest disciples. Parallel to this, around the same time bhagawan Ashutosh (Shiva) gave a mantra to Parvathi which would instil extreme detachment. Om Swami says, for Bhagawan Shiva, renunciation comes before detachment but for Bhagavan Vishnu detachment comes first before renunciation. A person who is able to live life knowing when to renounce and when to be detached, would attain success in their penance. A person who is not able to renounce something will find detachment difficult too. The knowledge and mantra that Shiva gave to Ma Parvathi, was passed ahead to the best tantriks among whom Parashar rishi was one and he later took it out from the atharva Veda and gave it Veda Vyas. From Rishi Ved Vyas the tradition kept going ahead. About five hundred years ago Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born and he had a son whose name was shri Chandra Dev who became a naga saint. As per the tradition of the naga saints, who were the disciples of Ved Vyas, the mantra was a part of their practice and it was kept going. He says, the tradition then branched out into two. One branch practiced the Devi mantra and the other branch Shiva's. The Shiva mantra was later given by Baba Chandra Dev to his close disciples and later he established a tradition which was known as the Udasin sampradaya. These three traditions came together like the confluence of the Ganga, Jamuna and saraswati and this is the tradition to which Om Swami is attached. Listen to the full discourse to get a proper understanding on this beautiful topic. Sriram is my Gurubhai – brothers of the same teacher. He is particularly interesting to me in that he is indigenous to South India, born into the society and language of Krishnamacharya and Desikachar. Whereas I migrated into that culture and knew nothing of it in my early life. As a modern man in the West, Sriram is an extremely informed Yoga teacher who is able to communicate the nuance of the culture of our teachers in modern and useful ways. Sriram speaks of growing up in South India as a radical young explorer of life and his journey into Yoga — a riveting and a brilliant window into how radical Desikachar himself was, absolutely not a traditionally religious or conservative yoga school. And the inspiring story of his relationship with his German wife Anjali and move to Germany. R. Sriram has been working as a yoga teacher in Germany since 1988. In 1977 he began to systematically learn yoga with Śri TKV Desikachar in Chennai, his hometown - he received private and group lessons from him. Sriram also took private Ayurveda lessons with Dr. V. Narayanaswami and attended group lessons with Śri T. Krishnamacharya. For several years, Sriram taught under the guidance of Śri TKV Desikachar at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai Yoga and contributed to the development of the then young institute. The philosophical source texts of yoga, therapy with yoga, mantra yoga and yoga with children from mainstream and special schools were and are his focus. Thanks to his language skills and the support of his German wife, the Indian dancer Anjali, he has become an important link between east and west for many yoga practitioners. Since the nineties he has taught at many yoga training centers and universities and has brought many people closer to yoga in all its aspects in private lessons. With his therapeutic knowledge he was able to give many people the opportunity to find a new, healthy way of dealing with their complaints and illnesses. In this way, R. Sriram has been able to train many students to become well-founded yoga teachers over the years. These teachers offer yoga all over Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Sriram's childhood in South India and his introduction into spiritual life through music His involvement with radical Chennai theatre communities in the 1970s On meeting his wife, famous German-born Indian classical dancer Anjali Sriram, and the meeting of East and West Memories of J. Krishnamurti and TKV Desikachar and why Desikachar ignored his questions about spirituality Breaking out of cultural expectations and how Yoga helped resolve conflicts Reflections on the culture of the Mandiram community and those teaching and studying there Vedic chanting and the relationship with music Desikachar as “no more than a friend, no less than a friend” and his radical acceptance Dealing with the dreaded question – “What type of yoga do you teach?” Dealing with religious fears and prejudice over 30 years of working as a Yoga teacher in Germany, and how it has changed in that time.
