Real Men Connect with Dr. Joe Martin - Christian Men Podcast
Gary Miracle is a Christian advocate, fighter, and motivational speaker. He is Michigan-born and was Florida-raised by a close-knit family, and his life was forever changed by two events: First, the day he placed his faith in Jesus Christ, and second, the phone call he got to work with MercyMe, the Christian band that brought the world, “I Can Only Imagine.” Both his relationship with Christ and friendship with the band would have an eternal impact on his life. Gary is the father of three boys and he's the forever dad of an adopted daughter from Colombia, South America. Back in December of 2019, Gary fell ill, and his body went into septic shock after an advanced case of the flu. In the days that followed, he survived a number of life-threatening moments including coding and being revived. After falling into a coma, Gary's family had to make the unfathomable decision to attempt to save his life by agreeing for the doctors to amputate both his hands and feet. Through his long and arduous recovery, Gary had to make the difficult, daily choice to discover a new life, that today, he believes was always waiting on him to experience. His 20-plus year friendship with the Grammy-nominated Christian band, MercyMe, was the catalyst for them to introduce Gary's story to the world through the music video for their hit song called, “Say I Won't.” Today, when Gary isn't at home with his family in central Florida, he is out on the road sharing his story at churches, conferences, and conventions of how he discovered the life God always had waiting on him -- despite personal tragedy and trauma. Miracles happen every day, and when your last name is quite literally Miracle, you have to believe it! As author and speaker Gary Miracle describes it, his life caught up to his name in 2020 when an infection nearly killed him after going into septic shock and caused him to lose his arms and legs. His incredible story reached the world when the Grammy-nominated Christian band “MercyMe” shared it through their music video “Say I Won't.” Now Gary sits down with Nine-time Emmy winner David Sams to chat about his personal story of survival, relationship with lead singer Bart Millard, and new outlook on life. Gary's book, “No More Bad Days” is an inspiration for anyone who has experienced loss or trauma. #GaryMiracleSpeaks #MercyMe #NoMoreBadDays #SayIWont #DavidSams #KeepTheFaith #ContagiousInfluencer
Gary Miracle has one INCREDIBLE story. His life truly is his namesake, a MIRACLE. Four years ago in December 2019, he almost died. Despite losing his arms and legs, Gary continues to press on. When he's not at home with his family in central Florida, Gary is on the road at churches, conferences, and conventions sharing how he discovered the life God always had for him, in spite of personal tragedy and trauma. Gary Miracle, author of "No More Bad Days," talks about how his worst day of nearly dying and then losing his limbs due to an infection became his best day in learning God's grace. Psychologist Debra Fileta, head of the Debra Fileta Counseling Network, offers help when we see all the cards and social media posts of other families who look like they got it all together and we don't. Gary Miracle is an author and a speaker who passionately believes in the power of storytelling and how it unites us and spurs us on when life is tragically hard, and also reminds us who we are and who God made us to be. In this episode, he shares his story of growing immersed in church culture on Sunday but then suffered from an identity crisis the rest of the week as he chased perfection, and changed personas in order to be affirmed by anyone and everyone. Finally, later in his life and career, now a married man with kids, Gary reached his breaking point and reached out to his friend Bart Millard of the band “Mercy's Me” who began to disciple Gary and guide him to a life-changing and intimate relationship with Jesus. Not long after, in December 2019, Gary went from celebrating Christmas with his family feeling a little under the weather to being on his literal deathbed on New Year's Eve. The first week of 2020 Gary's life hung in the balance as teams of doctors worked on him and cared for him, and his loved ones stormed heaven for him. On January 10th, 2020, Gary opened his eyes, alive, but his body would never be the same, and his limbs were dying. Gary shares his journey of his 107 days stay in the hospital, reentering into his life without his legs and hands, and how God met him in all of it in our time together, but he goes more in-depth in his book No More Bad Days: Trading the Pursuit of Perfection for the Gift of Grace. Gary is passionate about choosing to truly live instead of just being alive and doing that authentically with others. We were made in the image of a communal God, and as we face the intensity and heartbreak of our lives, He provides people to walk through hard things with us. However, that call to live in community requires risk and humility, but as Gary reminds us, when life is at its lowest moments, people God gives us can echo hope back to us. This is a message for anyone who needs to know there is more left for them in this life. This is a message for those who need to remember God is still in the business of miracles. This is a message for someone who is walking through horrible circumstances but needs to be reminded that God still has good for them. You matter, and your story matters. Both his relationship with Christ and friendship with the band would have an eternal impact. Gary is the biological dad of three boys and the adopted dad of a forever Colombian daughter. Their family is rounded out by Ecmo, Gary's service dog. In December of 2019, Gary fell ill, his body in septic shock after an advanced case of the flu. More about No More Bad Days When tragedy struck, Gary Miracle could have given up. Instead, he chose a different perspective, discovering depths of grace and heights of hope he had only ever heard of before. At first, he thought he had a bad case of the flu—some kind of bug he'd caught from one of his kids. But Gary Miracle's illness turned out to be an infection so severe that the only way to save his life was amputating both arms below the elbows and both legs below the knees. The loss of his limbs was not the only challenge Gary had to face. Excruciating difficulties marked his family life as well. In 2020, the Grammy-nominated Christian band MercyMe shared Gary's story with the world through the music video to their hit song “Say I Won't,” and he emerged as a powerful voice for the grace of God. In the spirit of Romans 8:28, understanding that God works through all circumstances, Miracle has responded in faith by helping and encouraging others who have faced personal challenges. Today, he travels the world, sharing the hope-filled message that, through Christ in light of eternity, there are no more bad days. Regardless of your circumstances, every day can be a new beginning. If you have suffered loss, experienced trauma, or been forced to rebuild your life from the ground up, this book is for you. In the bleak aftermath of unspeakable tragedy, it is faith that dawns as our beacon of survival and healing. Faith, by its very nature, is about trust, hope, and a belief that God is in control. It allows us to seek solace and strength in something greater than ourselves, and it provides a comforting balm for our wounded hearts. Both of our guests this week faced heartbreaking circumstances that could have shaken their faith beyond repair, but each of them chose to wait and see what God would do in their lives as they healed from their scars and faced a new way of living through their pain. Nicole Avant is an author and film producer who grew up around the music business. Her father, Clarence Avant, was known as the Godfather of Black Music, and as an executive in the music business, he furthered the careers of jazz legends like Sarah Vaughn and Jimmy Smith, and was a sought after mentor for artists like Jamie Foxx, David Geffen, Whitney Houston, and others. Nicole's family life was steeped in music and in faith. It was the faith she would cling to when tragedy struck twice—first, the devastating loss of her mother to the hands of a gunman who invaded their home, and then, the loss of her father shortly after. Author and speaker Gary Miracle unexpectedly found himself on his deathbed in the emergency room, with a 1.7% chance to survive the night. A series of small miracles lined up, and though he ultimately lost all four limbs, Gary's life was spared, inspiring MercyMe's hit song, “Say I Won't.” Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: The Beathard family Upcoming interview: Rachael Lampa Operation Christmas Child Nicole Avant Clarence Avant Sarah Vaughn Jimmy Smith Jamie Foxx David Geffen Whitney Houston Bill Withers “Lean On Me” Philippians 1:11 NIV Think You'll Be Happy: Moving Through Grief with Grit, Grace, and Gratitude Gary Miracle “Say I Won't” septic shock ECMO machine Depression www.garymiracle.com No More Bad Days Interview Quotes: “If I need to understand myself, I always go to a song.” - Nicole Avant “I always go back to the music because you don't feel alone. You never feel alone.” - Nicole Avant “The first scripture that my mom made me memorize was Philippians 1:11, ‘May you always be doing those good, kind things which show that you are a child of God, for this will bring much praise and glory to the Lord.' And that was kind of my mantra.” - Nicole Avant “My faith was everything to me during the experience [of losing my mother]. It does not take the pain away, but it does help you move through the pain. I was taking it day by day, and then it became, ‘Oh, Lord, minute by minute, minute by minute, give me today.'” - Nicole Avant “Something that took me years to learn, but I'm grateful that I learned it before this [tragedy], is forgiveness really has nothing to do with condonement.” - Nicole Avant “What a beautiful thing that you could change your thinking and you could use your imagination. And if you use it wisely and ask for help from the divine, you're going to be okay.” - Nicole Avant “I want to spend my whole life telling people that God is good and begging people to believe that God is good and convincing people of that, and then when something traumatic happens to me, still living my life like He is really, really good.” - Gary Miracle “I want to fight for life. I want to learn what it means to live and not just be alive.” - Gary Miracle “I'm still here and I'm still alive and I'm still present, and now I get to gladly say that I am in prosthetic legs and God's grace has been so sufficient and so good for me through this season.” - Gary Miracle “I get to say that there were only setbacks in my life because I thought they were setbacks in that moment, but looking back, they weren't setbacks at all. Christ was still working out my story and I just wanted it to be a lot faster and happen sooner than He wanted it to. So I had what I call setbacks, but Christ calls them next steps.“ - Gary Miracle “Be vulnerable enough to tell just one person who you really are, because what I've learned right now in my life is through the sharing of my struggles, both visible and invisible, I've never been more loved in my entire life when I thought I would be judged for all of that.” - Gary Miracle “I believe that there is going to be a day that I am going to be running down the streets of gold with my brand new legs, with my son Ellis, side by side, and I can't wait to meet him and I can't wait to be there. And I can't wait to meet all of you all there as well. So join me in chasing Jesus.” - Gary Miracle ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Gary Miracle, author of No More Bad Days: Trading The Pursuit of Perfection for the Gift of Grace, spends the show with us to share his story and of God's power in & through it. Miracle sustained an infection just after Christmas 2019 and within days found himself flatlining in the hospital. Gary survived but by April 2020 had become a quadruple amputee. Miracle also details his battle on the inside with (as Chapter 1 is titled) "Working for Affirmation, Praying for Approval." His story is also partly chronicled in MercyMe's 2020 song "Say I Won't" (in which Miracle opens the music video). No More Bad Days is Salem (WFIL's parent company)'s Book of the Month. If today's conversation doesn't move you, I don't know what will. My guest today has a story that could have ended in tragedy, yet instead ended in triumph. It is a story of life and death, of dark and light, of fear and hope. Life, light, and hope win in this one. Today's conversation is deeply rooted in the Christian faith and what it means to trust in God and to live for God. It is a conversation, a guest, and a story that will impact lives and change perspectives. My guest today is Gary Miracle. Gary is a Christian and motivational speaker. He is also an example of what it means to be a fighter. When Gary was 39, he got very ill and fell into septic shock. He was placed in a coma with a 1.7% chance of survival. His family and friends were told to say their goodbyes. After a transfer to a new hospital, he flatlined. Gary died for 11 minutes. Yet, by the grace of God, he was revived. He was placed on a form of life support that left his arms and legs without blood. While it saved his life, his extremities were amputated from the elbows and knees down. However, he did not let this stop him. Today, he lives a full life. He inspires others with his story of life and God's goodness through his speeches and podcast. He is a friend to anyone struggling, and he encourages us to be vulnerable and to live in our true selves as God created us. He has a deep relationship with Jesus, a rich family life, and an inspiring message for everyone to hear. In this episode, Gary shares the details of his story. From there, he and I discuss what his life was like before the event, and how it changed after. We talk about how his faith grew with his new chance at life. Gary gives insight into what it looks like to trust God. He answers the question of whether or not he questioned God's work in his life. Gary doesn't just explain his story; he also shows how his new perspective applies to everyone's lives, giving the audience profound value. He encourages everyone to live in a state of vulnerability that allows us to be true to ourselves and find strength through solid community. Stay until the end to hear Gary answer my final question with heart. God tells a guy to marry a prostitute who then goes back to selling her body. She becomes a slave and God tells him to buy her out of slavery and bring her back home. It's a book in the bible! And it's a painfully beautiful picture of God's love for us. Then, sometimes life can be like looking up a 100 foot cliff that we have to scale. And we so often shrink back in fear because we so easily forget that we have the Spirit of God in us. That's the story of MercyMe's “Say I Won't,” the song inspired by the courage and faith of Gary Miracle. Next, God's unconditional, loyal, furious, unbreakable, extravagant love. The Hebrew language describes in in one word: Hesed. Finally, we take a swim in the bottomless ocean of the glory and brilliance of Jesus! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
After meeting a man with no arms and no legs, Notre Dame Prep students devise invention to make his life easier — but he changes theirs, too (0:03) Listeners are introduced to Gary Miracle, a 40-year-old father of four from Florida who was a healthy sales associate, athlete and crew member of a Christian band until a sudden illness two years ago resulted in the loss of both his arms and his legs. (1:49) Gary describes the sudden onset of sepsis — a blood infection — between Christmas and New Year's in 2019 that sent him to the emergency room multiple times. On New Year's Eve, he went downhill quickly, and on Jan. 1, 2020, Gary died — for 11 minutes. (4:24) Doctors were able to revive him, and Gary was airlifted to a hospital in Orlando, where he remained in a coma on life support for 10 days. In order to save his life, doctors had to amputate both his arms and both his legs. He was given a 1.7% chance of survival. (5:50) Upon awaking from his coma, Gary learned the gravity of his situation. Though not a “super Christian Sunday school answer kind of guy,” Gary's mind immediately went to the biblical story of Job, specifically chapter 1, verse 21: “The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away.” (7:04) Listeners learn about Louise Palardy's “Engineering and Empathy” class at Notre Dame Preparatory High School in Pontiac, where students are given a charge: To engineer solutions to make people like Gary's lives easier. (7:48) Palardy explains the purpose of the class, which is based on a program called “Project Invent,” to offer training, resources and experiences to support real-world learning in the classroom. Her class learned about Gary's situation, and immediately wanted to help. (9:17) Over Zoom, Palardy's students met with Gary to discuss his life, needs and story — and then they got to work. Students in the class discuss what they learned from Gary, and how their product could help in his new situation. (11:34) Gary discusses his difficulties with tasks he used to find easy — such as plugging in his cellphone at night, changing clothes, or simply holding a fork. It was these simple tasks that Palardy's students wanted to solve for. (13:36) Palardy describes the invention, a tool that could attach to the stump of Gary's arm to hold items like a toothbrush, comb, pen or other household items. In addition to helping Gary, she says, the invention could be brought to a wider market with the help of investors. (15:10) Students in the class reflect on the experience, appreciating listening to Gary's story and having the opportunity to work with him and understand his story. (16:33) Gary, reflecting on his own experience, “flips the script” by discussing how everyone — not just himself — has challenges, some visible and some invisible. When he drops his fork, he says, people offer to pick it up for him. But just like others help him, Gary wants to help them, too — and that's where “lending a hand” really finds its meaning. Gary Miracle joins The Redeemed Man podcast. Gary Miracle, a Tampa-area husband and father of four for whom a catastrophic blood infection cost all four of his limbs in early 2020. Yet his first thought upon learning the news wasn't anger or despair, but rather the wisdom of the Book of Job—”The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away.” “I remember thinking that in my life, it was just my taking-away time. I can't be thankful all my life for the things He's given me and then be mad at Him for the things He's taken away,” Miracle says. Today, armed with a wheelchair and prosthetics, Miracle does everything from household chores to coaching his kids' sports teams and running two-mile races. And he hopes his story will inspire other people to find hope and healing through Christ. “I just want to preach from the rooftops about God's grace, how good God is, and how He doesn't make mistakes.”Visit The Redeemed's website for downloadable discussion question sets, show notes, inspirational articles, more resources, or to share your testimony.Join our Exclusive Newsletter: Signup today and be the first to get notified on upcoming webinars and new resources! The Redeemed is an organization giving men from all backgrounds a supportive, judgment-free environment, grounded in Christian love without demanding participation in any faith tradition, where they can open up about their challenges, worries, and failures—and celebrate their triumphs over those struggles.Have a redemption story? Yes, "Miracle" is his real name, given at birth and Yes, Gary is a walking, talking miracle from God to his wife, his kids and to regular folks like us. I don't want to spill too much here because the true worth is in his words in the show but I will share with you this link and I encourage you to listen to it first and then come back for the interview.Gary's song- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhTHgaCjTJswww.garymiracle.com
A rare and brief episode today. I say rare because it's just me. No guests. After my amazing trip to Orlando, Florida, I asked the socials what platform would be best to share the story. The major response was "A solo Unscripted Podcast." As I say in the episode, you'll likely understand why I usually just click record and get out of the way after listening to this one. I did my best to tell the story of my 24 hours in Orlando. Gary Miracle was with MercyMe in the early days of the band’s career, selling merchandise and driving a tour bus. Miracle has stayed close with the band ever since then, which is why their new single, “Say I Won’t,” is written about Miracle, and the heartbreaking journey he has been through the past few months. Gary and Kelly Miracle were living a very typical life when Gary suddenly became very sick, and in a matter of days, life as they knew it changed forever. Monday Gary joins Mornings with Eric and Brigitte to share his testimony of tragedy, loss, and redemption. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After a sudden illness and 107 days in the hospital, Gary Miracle came home to a radically different life. He had lost all four limbs. Gary and Kelly held on to the belief that God would not allow something so big and drastic in his life, if He didn't plan to use it in a big way. Gary's story became the inspiration for MercyMe's song and video, “Say I Won't.”
