Guest: Bobby Kotick, former CEO of Activision Blizzard; and Bing Gordon, general partner at Kleiner PerkinsIn 2020, when President Trump signed the executive order that would ban TikTok in the U.S., Bobby Kotick called his old friend Steven Mnuchin. The former Secretary of the Treasury told him that, if TikTok's U.S. operations were to be sold to an American company, Microsoft would be the only bidder.A couple calls later, he reached ByteDance founder and CEO Zhang Yiming, who said he'd rather sell to Bobby than Microsoft. Concerned about his ability to get the deal done solo, Bobby called Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and offered to make a joint bid. Nadella declined, but added, “ if the deal doesn't get done, we should sit down and talk about us buying Activision.” TikTok currently remains Chinese-owned, but three years later, Microsoft paid $75 billion for Activision Blizzard.Chapters:Mentioned in this episode: Harvard-Westlake School, Alison Ressler, Vivendi, Berkshire Hathaway, Bruce Hack and Arnaud de Puyfontaine, John Riccitiello and EA, Call of Duty, Bizarre Creations, Atari, Apple II, Commodore 64, Jean-Louis Gassée, Apple Lisa, Howard Lincoln, Philips, Magnavox Odyssey, Sutter Hill Ventures, Infocom and Zork, Toys-R-Us, Howard Hughes, E. “I really think that the past, we can go back to it and we definitely learn lessons because I'm always a hindsight person. So in hindsight, I'm always thinking that, okay, what could I have done better? But the past experiences for me, I've learned as I've gotten older, is to grab the lesson. And hopefully there's a blessing in there too. And then move on. I used to stay stuck in the past and try to understand why, why, why, why, why I would spend so much time, Elise, that I'm never getting back or why did this person do that? Why did this happen? Why did they treat me this way? And really try to unpack all of their baggage. And what I've learned is the “why” doesn't even really matter. It's, you know, what is the lesson for me? What is the lesson for my soul that I need right now?” So says Nicole Avant, a philanthropist, filmmaker, and former diplomat. In her recent memoir, Think You'll Be Happy, Nicole describes attending to the grief and shock of her mother's unthinkable murder—she was shot in the back by a home intruder in 2021—by creating a living legacy in her honor. Her mom, Jacqueline Avant, had turned her Los Angeles home into a refuge for artists, politicians, and world-changers as the partner to Nicole's father, entertainment mogul Clarence Avant, who is the subject of Nicole's beautiful documentary,The Black Godfather. Nicole grew up sitting at the feet of extraordinary artists like Bill Withers, Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones, Sidney Poitier watching as her parents navigated the world to make it better for future generations. In today's conversation, we talk about that legacy—as well as Nicole's relationship to the divine. Like her parents, she is a master connector—putting people together to see what unfolds. It was November 30, 2021, when Nicole Avant got a call in the middle of the night from her husband. The unthinkable had happened. Her otherwise healthy mom, Jacqueline Avant, was in critical condition at the hospital. She had been shot. Nicole would soon find out that her mother had been having an ordinary evening at her home in Beverly Hills when a man broke into her home in an attempted robbery. He shot Jacqueline, and then fled the scene. She died later that night in the hospital. Jacqueline was 81. It was an unspeakable tragedy that would leave most people paralyzed, enraged and probably seeking revenge. But Nicole's response surprised a lot of people. She decided that she's not a victim, and she would forgive her mother's murderer. She shares this radical sentiment in her new book: “Think You'll be Happy: Moving Through Grief with Grit, Grace, and Gratitude.” For those unfamiliar with Nicole, she is someone who wears many hats. She served as U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas under President Obama—and she was the first black woman to hold this seat. She's been a force in political fundraising. She raised more than half a million for President Obama in one night in 2012, and she was part of a fundraising team that raised $21 million for him in 2008. She's also a movie producer, which isn't exactly surprising considering she was born into black Hollywood royalty—her father was Clarence Avant, the legendary music mogul who managed artists like Bill Withers, Sarah Vaughan, and Freddie Hubbard. Today, she finds herself again a part of Hollywood royalty, just of more recent vintage. Her husband is Netflix Co-Ceo Ted Sarandos. But unlike the British royals, Nicole Avant doesn't put her views through a PR machine. She says what she thinks, and she doesn't have time for bullshit. All of which is why we were so eager to have her on Honestly today. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Gaslit Nation is recharging our batteries for the big election ahead so we're re-running a popular episode this week: Andrea's interview with her longtime friend and mentor, the journalist, filmmaker, and author Nelson George. Exclusively for our Patreon community we're publishing an all new bonus show this Saturday on how to stop MAGA. To our supporters at the Democracy Defender level and higher, submit your questions for our Q&A in the comments below or in a private message -- we always love hearing from you! Our Q&A will be out later this month! Thank you to everyone who supports the show -- we could not make Gaslit Nation without you! Nelson George set off to become the greatest music writer in the world. In this surreal essay, he explains his strange relationship with Prince who summoned him to listen to new music; this confirms George's dream was achieved. Having come out of the projects in Brooklyn to contribute to the bohemian renaissance of Spike Lee turning Brooklyn into a global brand, George lived the explosion of Black culture across film, music, art, and more at the close of the 20th century and looks back at this groundbreaking time in a sweeping and important discussion of why art matters. This is an interview about artists -- it's for people who want to be artists -- it's for artists at all stages of their careers -- it's for people who love and consume art -- it's a discussion about the value of mentorship -- and the way to get to the heart of being an artist, why that's important, what that means, the practical ins and outs of how to do it. From the biography on his website: "Nelson George is the author of several histories of African American music, including Where Did Our Love Go: the Rise and Fall of the Motown Sound, The Death of Rhythm & Blues, and the classic Hip Hop America. He has published two collections of music journalism: Buppies, BBoys, Baps & Bohos: Notes on Post-Soul America and the recent The Nelson George Mixtape, which is available through Pacific Books. He has written several novels with music themes (The Accidental Hunter, The Plot Against Hip Hop, The Lost Treasures of R&B, and To Funk and Die in LA). In television, George was a producer on the Emmy Award winning The Chris Rock Show on HBO, a producer on Hip Hop Honors on VH1, and executive producer of the American Gangster crime series on BET. As a filmmaker, George has co-written the screenplays to Strictly Business and CB4. He directed Queen Latifah to a Golden Globe in the HBO film Life Support, which he also co-wrote. He has directed a number of documentaries including Finding the Funk, The Announcement, and Brooklyn Boheme (Showtime). George was a producer on the award winning documentary on Black music executive Clarence Avant, The Black Godfather, for Netflix. His theatrical documentary on ballerina Misty Copeland is called A Ballerina's Tale. He was a writer/producer on Baz Lurhmann's hip hop inspired Netflix series The Get Down. He is an executive producer of Dear Mama, a documentary series about Tupac Shakur directed by Allen Hughes." And, to add to this illustrious biography, Nelson has been a longtime friend and mentor who helped Andrea navigate the wily world of getting Mr. Jones written and produced. Fight for your mind! Nicole Avant is a philanthropist, diplomat, filmmaker, actress and author. Her father, Clarence Avant, was a music legend and entertainment mogul, and her mother, Jacqueline Avant, was a legendary philanthropist. Nicole grew up around some of the most extraordinary artists of our time, including Bill Withers, Quincy Jones and Sidney Portier, and drew from her upbringing to create a noteworthy career of her own. But everything changed for Nicole in 2021, when her mother was fatally shot during a failed home invasion. Nicole channeled her grief, and turned her pain into fuel to write her beautiful memoir, “Think You'll Be Happy”. She joins Hoda Kotb to share her journey, reflecting on managing her grief, finding forgiveness and moving ahead when the people who defined you and guided you are no longer physically here.
In the bleak aftermath of unspeakable tragedy, it is faith that dawns as our beacon of survival and healing. Faith, by its very nature, is about trust, hope, and a belief that God is in control. It allows us to seek solace and strength in something greater than ourselves, and it provides a comforting balm for our wounded hearts. Both of our guests this week faced heartbreaking circumstances that could have shaken their faith beyond repair, but each of them chose to wait and see what God would do in their lives as they healed from their scars and faced a new way of living through their pain. Nicole Avant is an author and film producer who grew up around the music business. Her father, Clarence Avant, was known as the Godfather of Black Music, and as an executive in the music business, he furthered the careers of jazz legends like Sarah Vaughn and Jimmy Smith, and was a sought after mentor for artists like Jamie Foxx, David Geffen, Whitney Houston, and others. Nicole's family life was steeped in music and in faith. It was the faith she would cling to when tragedy struck twice—first, the devastating loss of her mother to the hands of a gunman who invaded their home, and then, the loss of her father shortly after. Author and speaker Gary Miracle unexpectedly found himself on his deathbed in the emergency room, with a 1.7% chance to survive the night. A series of small miracles lined up, and though he ultimately lost all four limbs, Gary's life was spared, inspiring MercyMe's hit song, “Say I Won't.” Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: The Beathard family Upcoming interview: Rachael Lampa Operation Christmas Child Nicole Avant Clarence Avant Sarah Vaughn Jimmy Smith Jamie Foxx David Geffen Whitney Houston Bill Withers “Lean On Me” Philippians 1:11 NIV Think You'll Be Happy: Moving Through Grief with Grit, Grace, and Gratitude Gary Miracle “Say I Won't” septic shock ECMO machine Depression www.garymiracle.com No More Bad Days Interview Quotes: “If I need to understand myself, I always go to a song.” - Nicole Avant “I always go back to the music because you don't feel alone. And that was kind of my mantra.” - Nicole Avant “My faith was everything to me during the experience [of losing my mother]. It does not take the pain away, but it does help you move through the pain. I was taking it day by day, and then it became, ‘Oh, Lord, minute by minute, minute by minute, give me today.'” - Nicole Avant “Something that took me years to learn, but I'm grateful that I learned it before this [tragedy], is forgiveness really has nothing to do with condonement.” - Nicole Avant “What a beautiful thing that you could change your thinking and you could use your imagination. And if you use it wisely and ask for help from the divine, you're going to be okay.” - Nicole Avant “I want to spend my whole life telling people that God is good and begging people to believe that God is good and convincing people of that, and then when something traumatic happens to me, still living my life like He is really, really good.” - Gary Miracle “I want to fight for life. I want to learn what it means to live and not just be alive.” - Gary Miracle “I'm still here and I'm still alive and I'm still present, and now I get to gladly say that I am in prosthetic legs and God's grace has been so sufficient and so good for me through this season.” - Gary Miracle “I get to say that there were only setbacks in my life because I thought they were setbacks in that moment, but looking back, they weren't setbacks at all. Christ was still working out my story and I just wanted it to be a lot faster and happen sooner than He wanted it to. So I had what I call setbacks, but Christ calls them next steps.“ - Gary Miracle “Be vulnerable enough to tell just one person who you really are, because what I've learned right now in my life is through the sharing of my struggles, both visible and invisible, I've never been more loved in my entire life when I thought I would be judged for all of that.” - Gary Miracle “I believe that there is going to be a day that I am going to be running down the streets of gold with my brand new legs, with my son Ellis, side by side, and I can't wait to meet him and I can't wait to be there. And I can't wait to meet all of you all there as well. So join me in chasing Jesus.” - Gary Miracle ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Nicole Avant joins the show to talk about her book, "Think You'll Be Happy: Moving Through Grief with Grit, Grace, and Gratitude." The memoir grapples with the tragic murder of her mother, the civil activist and philanthropist Jacqueline Avant, who was fatally shot during an attempted robbery at her home in 2021. Rather than becoming lost in the darkness, Nicole writes candidly about how she turned her pain into purpose, and moved forward through love and incredible resilience. In this conversation, Avant explains how the initial idea behind the book transformed after the unimaginable loss of her mother, shares how she allowed faith to guide her during even the most trying times, and describes the healing power of saying, "I love you." Avant also explains how she supported her 91-year-old father (the late Hollywood dealmaker and music mogul Clarence Avant) through the tragedy, shares some of the countless life-lessons her parents bestowed on her throughout the years, and reflects on what it means to live a significant life.
What a powerful episode we have for you today, listeners -- on the program we have former U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas Nicole Avant, whose new book talks about working through grief after the murder of her mother, Jacqueline Avant, in December 2021, and the loss of her father, Clarence Avant, this past August. Grief is certainly not something any of us want to face, but when it's here, it helps to follow the lead of others who have navigated it and are navigating it, too, and the lessons and wisdom in this book are ones I'll keep in my heart forever. AP correspondent Julie Walker reports on Obit Clarence Avant.
Clarence Avant, "The Black Godfather," has died. Clarence helped launch the careers or guide the careers of all kinds of folks like Quincy Jones, Bill Withers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and The S.O.S. Band among many others. Avant died quietly at his home here in Los Angeles yesterday. He did always talk about the two pieces of advice he got from an early mentor, the music manager, Joe Glaser. He said, never let on how much you know and ask for as much money as possible without stuttering. Clarence did just that. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, shortly after his beloved wife, Jacqueline Avant, was murdered in their Beverly Hills home. Her death was mourned by Bill Clinton, Magic Johnson, all of us here in Hollywood, and so many other people around the world. Nicole Avant, their daughter, always credited her mom and dad for being prominent philanthropists and bringing other family members into the love, passion, and importance of arts, culture, and entertainment. Clarence Avant was one of a kind and will truly be missed. Our condolences go out to their children and to the entire Avant family. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Dean Richards, entertainment reporter for WGN, joins Wendy Snyder (in for Bob Sirott) to provide the latest news in entertainment. Wendy and Dean talk about the A-List celebrities doing their part in Maui, the death of a music industry legend, and Dean’s review of “MJ: The Musical.”
Grammy-award winning mega-producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis admit to I SEE U that they have nothing to prove and yet, so much to say. Although the duo had been working together for over 35 years — writing and producing hits for other artists, they've finally released a studio album with their own marquee. ‘Jam and Lewis: Vol 1,' showcases top-charting vocalists like Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Usher, Boyz II Men and The Sounds of Blackness. The iconic producers reveal to host Eddie Robinson how White club owners in the '70s shunned them from performing at venues in Minneapolis; how cultures clashed during recording sessions with English synth-pop group, The Human League; why a Janet Jackson reunion will be delayed; and what happened that made Terry Lewis almost walk away from the music industry entirely.
JUST PLAIN BILL?JUST AS I AM by Bill Withers (Sussex, 1971)Bill Withers was uncategorizable. Was he a soul artist? A folk musician? A blues singer? He certainly was no pop star. He picked a nylon string guitar, for God's sakes! But, even so, he was one of the most covered songwriters who ever plied the craft. His appeal was universal. There hasn't been any aspiring singer, of any genre, who hasn't tried to put over Lean on Me or Ain't No Sunshine. Bill belonged to all of us. Just As I Am was Bill's debut album, produced by one of the premier soul artists, Booker T Jones, but in it he covers folk avatar Fred Neil's Everybody's Talkin', and Paul McCartney's Let it Be. Listen to Grandma's Hands and you can hear the guitar of rock icon Steven Stills. The MG's Duck Dunn plays some of the bass parts, but so does Chris Etheridge of The Flying Burrito Brothers.Withers narrates part of his story himself in the cut Do it Good. The son of a miner from Slab Fork, West Virginia, Bill worked as a machinist for Douglas Aircraft, IBM, and Ford - all the while sending out demo tapes until Clarence Avant signed him to Sussex, where he hit it with Ain't No Sunshine at the age of 32 - way over the hill by pop star standards. He's pictured on the label holding his lunch pail, dressed in a t shirt and jeans - and when he first hit pay dirt, he refused to quit his job, saying that the music business was “fickle”. Is it ever! The common touch was always part of Bill's magic. And, of course, an uncanny talent and instinct, not to mention a warm baritone that poured like honey out of America's car radios. When he was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 he was characteristically understated when he said: “I don't think I've done bad for a guy from Slab Fork, West Virginia.” Neither do we.
