The pandemic forced some longer-than-usual delays between seasons of many of our favourite TV shows. Mark Little, for example, had to wait over four years to launch the second season of his animated adult comedy Gary and His Demons. The series, about an aging and very cranky demon slayer who wants to quit his job if his boss can ever find a replacement, was launched in 2018 on VRV. That service seems to have gone the way of the VCR. The good news is that Season 2 and the original season can now be streamed on Prime Video. On this episode, Mark, who writes, produces and provides the voice of Gary, talks about the transition.Little came to prominence several years ago as a member of the East Coast comedy troupe Picnicface. Many will also remember him as the math teacher in Gerry Dee's classroom comedy Mr d.The B.C.-native also talks about his harrowing audition for Saturday Night Live where he killed with his opening joke. The next six minutes, however, not so much. Also heard on this shorter-than-usual episode: Stephen Sloan, head of the Toronto studio animating the new season, Look Mom Productions.
Dan welcomes Sully to the show. Dan talks about the three NHL greats who retired on the same day, a trip to see Gerry Dee, and the broadcasting bubble.

In 2021, a producer for the game show Family Feud Canada reached out to Rabbi Stephen Wise, hoping to boost the diversity pool of their show's contestants. When asked if he knew anyone from the community who might want to participate, Rabbi Wise didn't need to look very far: his wife, Cheryl, and her whole family are game show fanatics. That's how he joined his in-laws, the Kestelmans, on live TV in March 2022, winning three matches against three other families and walking away with about $2,500. Plus, they managed to teach host Gerry Dee a bit about Jewish life—an easy ask for a rabbi, the principal of TanenbaumCHAT and the director of a synagogue's afternoon school. Renee Cohen, the school principal, gives a behind-the-scenes scoop on what it was like being on the show and how they felt representing Jewish Canadians on national TV. Peter Mansbridge, Strombo and Gerry Dee on todays Media and Entertainment edition of our “Best of Series"
Gerry Dee says he is thrilled to be back in front of a studio audience again as Family Feud Canada returns for a third season. The game show, shot at CBC's Toronto broadcast centre, had to turn studio audiences away last season as COVID safety protocols limited capacity to participants and crew. Dee, a seasoned stand-up comedy performer, suddenly had to aim his ad libs at camera and crew members only and, as he points out, “they're trained not to laugh.”This season a limited number of on-lookers are allowed back in for each of the 102 new episodes airing Monday to Thursdays on CBC.Dee also talks about a series he did work on in Montreal during COVID times: The Moodys. The Fox sitcom starred Denis Leary and Jay Baruchel. Dee, a loyal defender of his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs, says he talked hockey all day long between Leary, a big Bruins supporter, and Baruchel, who bleeds the Blue, Blanc Rouge of les Canadiens. On the podcast, Dee also talks about his hopes for the Leafs this season, efforts to get back on the road with a series of comedy concerts and why he feels his teacher sitcom Mr.d, which ran for eight seasons on CBC, had too short a title.
Comic Gerry Dee joins Ray and Darren and talks stories from his CIS hockey career, coaching his kids, how being a stand-up comic differs from being a pro athlete, his golf chirping abilities, favourite game shows and much more. Coolbet Kris joins and talks the NFL line movements based solely on Aaron Rodgers trade rumours. #AskRayandDregsAnything sees questions on whether Adam Fox should be a Norris candidate even though he is only in his second season. I first met Jay Baruchel 20 years ago in Los Angeles on a Television Critics Association Fox network reception in downtown Los Angeles, At 18, he was starring in Judd Apatow's college comedy Undeclared alongside another young Canadian, Seth Rogen. The two were pretty excited to have landed on a promising show; what they could not have known at the time was that they'd each won the comedy career lottery.Baruchel was born in Ottawa and raised in Montreal. He grew up soaking up every bit of movie intel from the likes of Leonard Maltin and Siskel & Ebert; within a few years he would be reviewed by all three. He talks about his steps along the way -- his early Canadian work on Popular Mechanics for Kids (PMK) and Are You Afraid of the Dark; being directed by Cameron Crowe in "Almost Famous" and Clint Eastwood in "Million Dollar Baby"; being reunited with Rogen on "Knocked Up" and "This is The End."Also touched on is his his work on the FX series Man Seeking Woman, a shot-in-Toronto wonder, and his determination to act in, direct, write and produce projects in his home and native land. One current effort is The Moodys, which premieres Thursday, April 1 on Fox. The Montreal-based production stars Denis Leary, Elizabeth Perkins and Francois Arnaud, with Gerry Dee recurring. Because Leary is in it, the series has several scenes shot in a hockey rink. Baruchel, a lifelong fan of les Canadiens, says even he is less of an NHL nerd than Leary. You'll hear more on other Baruchel touchstones, such as his own hockey movies Goons 1 & 2, where he also contributed as a writer and a director. I even try to pry a story out of him about his "How to Train Your Dragon" voice-mate Craig Ferguson. That's Jay Baruchel, who'se gone from Almost Famous to a clutch player in TV and film.
In Part 3 of the Jay and Dan 3.0 Podcast finale we talk to our friend Gerry Dee, who recalls first meeting the guys at an event over fifteen years ago, and is grateful for what they've built since. With Gerry we flash back to season 1 of 3.0, and his hilarious stories about working at The Keg, and his trip to Scotland. Couple of BFF's from the Fox days drop in for a chat, as Bernie Kim and Mike Botticello join the pod to discuss their fondest memories of working with Dan. We flashback to Bernie's feverish ping pong dreams, and Mike calling into the pod from an airport in Maui. We wrap up this episode by talking with one of the Original Bahds of the podcast, none other than the legendary Jeremy Taggart. Jeremy looks back at the classic moments, talks about how the pod has impacted his life, and points out the commonalities that brought us all together. We flashback to Jeremy's second appearance on the 1.0 version of the pod, as he takes in a breakdown of the theme from Alf, and becomes a therapist for Jay and Dan along the way. More to come next week…
In this week's episode of Basketball Mood, an alternate version of Shaq and Donovan Mitchell's awkward exchange kicks things off. We discuss Mitchell's game and if the Utah Jazz are good enough to win it all, as well as who's in and who's out in both the Eastern and Western Conference. Hello everyone! Describing 2020 as BLEAK is an understatement. Thankfully, we have people like Gerry Dee looking to make it a little brighter. Gerry Dee is the star of his sitcom, Mr. D, about a gym teacher going through his experiences as an educator, and all eight of its seasons are now available on Amazon Prime! Gerry joined me on the show to talk about his comedy, how his previous years as a teacher formed his work, and how he attempts to keep his comedy authentic to the real world of teaching. Whether you need a break during the holiday season, or just want to experience a conversation between a current public school teacher (me), and a popular comedian, this is the episode for you. This episode is sponsored by Heinemann—the leading publisher of professional books and resources for educators—and their professional book, Risk. Fail. Rise. A Teacher’s Guide to Learning From Mistakes by Colleen Cruz. You’ve likely heard the adage, ‘Everyone makes mistakes.’ But knowing why we make mistakes can help us learn from them and improve situations once we’ve made them. In Risk. Fail. Rise. teachers will learn how to address their own teaching mistakes, model with their own mistake-making, and improve their responses to others’ mistakes. Colleen Cruz shares what research says on mistakes as part of learning and what that means for teaching. If we can create school cultures where we talk honestly about mistakes, then we can grow and create opportunities for children to grow in all the ways they deserve. And we deserve those opportunities too. Risk. Fail. Rise. is available as a book and ebook. Look for the audiobook in early 2021. To learn more visit Heinemann.com.
