The US has forced Israel to end its war on Gaza, but now the challenge is “to be engaged every single day, several times a day” to make sure the ceasefire holds, says Israeli American activist Gershon Baskin, the cofounder of Alliance for Two States. Baskin tells host Steve Clemons that President Donald Trump was convinced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel could force the Palestinians to surrender, but over time, it became obvious that “Hamas will never surrender.” Baskin predicts “there will be an awakening in Israel that we can't keep doing this ... military strategies don't work any more.”
The fragile peace in Gaza is holding for now but the slow release of the bodies of hostages has prompted fury in Israel, leading to retaliation. The Rafah crossing is temporarily closed and aid into Gaza will be reduced. President Donald Trump has warned Hamas if they don't give up their weapons, then they may be quickly disarmed. Meanwhile violent clashes has broken out in the strip between Hamas and rival groups, with the terror organisation publicly executing enemies in the street. Piers Morgan speaks to Eli Sharabi, who was kidnapped from his home by Hamas on October 7 and held hostage for 491 days. His wife and two daughters were killed during the attack and his brother died in captivity. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. US President Donald Trump is more optimistic about a hostage deal that will offer the immediate release of all living hostages, says Magid, discussing the President's Sunday tweet. He discusses the current plan offered by Trump and US special envoy Steve Witkoff, passed through unofficial Trump adviser Bishara Bahbah and Israeli activist Gershon Baskin. Magid also talks about another hostage deal proposed by Israel several weeks ago, which veers from the principles that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly insisted upon for several weeks. It calls for the release of all living hostages within 48 hours of a ceasefire, the disarmament of Hamas in a second phase, and a third phase of Israel's withdrawal from Gaza. Magid, currently in Israel, discusses the Saturday night protest for the hostages in Jerusalem, based on the idea of social cohesion as Israelis show up to support the hostages' families and the strongly held value that no one should ever be left behind. Gershon Baskin, Middle East Director of the International Communities Organisation, discusses the latest ceasefire proposal to end the war in Gaza
More than 100 organisations have signed a joint letter calling on Israel to stop the "weaponisation of aid" into Gaza, as "starvation deepens".Humanitarian groups, including Oxfam and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), say they are increasingly being told they are "not authorised" to deliver aid, unless they comply with the stricter Israeli regulations.Joining Andrea to discuss this with his unique insight is former Israeli Hostage Negotiator, Gershon Baskin.Image: Reuters
Hugo Bachega, BBC Middle East Correspondent, discusses the latest developments in Gaza, amid speculation around Israeli plans to occupy the Gaza Strip. Gershon Baskin, Middle East Director of the International Communities Organisation and former peace negotiator, outlines the reaction in Israel to reported plans for a full occupation of Gaza.
Benjamin Netanyahu is now pushing for a total reoccupation of the Gaza Strip, even amid protests from some IDF commanders and hostage families. And those hoping for the United States to urge restraint have so far been disappointed. Many believe that yet another Israeli escalation will be a death sentence for not only the hostages but also what's left of the strip. The United Nations says that 1,400 Palestinians have been killed while trying to get food since May, including at least 859 near aid sites run by the so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which is run in partnership between Israel and the US and was created to circumvent the established aid groups, with disastrous results. Former US special forces green beret Anthony Aguilar worked as a guard at a GHF site and has since blown the whistle on what he says are war crimes. He joins Piers Morgan to discuss this, before retired lieutenant colonel and IDF spokesman Jonathan Conricus joins to respond. But first, Piers leads a discussion with Israeli hostage negotiator Gershon Baskin, author of ‘End Jew Hatred' Brooke Goldstein, co-host of ‘Democracy-ish' Wajahat Ali and he also speaks to Palestinian National Initiative president Mustafa Barghouti. Cheers echoed through the streets of Gaza on Wednesday night, even before a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was finally announced. Much-needed respite appears to be in sight after 15 months of almost uninterrupted bombing, death and destruction. But the jubilant reaction of Gazans stands in stark contrast to the bleak environment that surrounds them – their homes destroyed, their loved ones maimed, killed or missing and their livelihoods crushed. Gaza, as it once was, no longer exists. Across the border, the families of Israeli hostages are also conflicted. They wait anxiously for their relatives to return, dead or alive, but are frustrated that not all of the captives in Gaza will be released under the terms of the agreement. The details of the 42-day truce, announced on Wednesday by Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, include the return of a number of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for the release of Palestinian detainees from Israeli prisons. Israeli forces are expected to withdraw to border areas and humanitarian aid will start to flow into the enclave. But the agreement does not come into effect until Sunday and, on Thursday morning, the ceasefire was plunged into doubt when Israel accused Hamas of creating a “last-minute crisis”. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said that would delay putting the deal to the security cabinet for approval. Hamas refuted the claim and by Friday the agreement was back on track, after Mr Netanyahu said a hostage release deal was reached. In this episode of Beyond the Headlines, host Nada AlTaher speaks to The National's foreign correspondent Hamza Hendawi and Israeli former hostage negotiator Gershon Baskin. They discuss the fine print of the agreement and what comes after the initial truce.
The ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas does not address several issues, including an end to the war in Gaza. But former Israeli hostage negotiator Gershon Baskin says that it's better than no deal. And, Gavin Kelleher, access manager in Gaza for the Norwegian Refugee Council, explains how a ceasefire will impact aid delivery to Gaza. Then, President Biden gave his farewell address on Wednesday. One year ago, news began breaking about an attack on Israel by the Islamic group Hamas whose fighters invaded southern Israel and murdered around 1200 people - children, women and men. They also captured around 240 others- children, men and women- and kept them hostage. It was the biggest killing of Jews since the Holocaust during World War Two. Israel's response was brutal- in the past year they have bombed Gaza- bombed refugee camps, schools, hospitals, homes- and in the process killed over 41,000 children, women and men. In the past few weeks, the war has escalated...another Shia militant group, backed by Iran- Hezbollah- have increased their attacks from Southern Lebanon into Northern Israel, and in response Israel has launched a ferocious response on Lebanon- they killed Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah and they've been blamed for exploding pagers and walkie talkies being carried by Hezbollah members. The Lebanese health ministry say nearly 2000 people have been killed there in the past three weeks. And then Iran got directly involved- they fired 1800 rockets at Israel- most of which were intercepted by the Israeli missile defence systems. How Israel will respond to that is not yet clear. So this is the scenario that is facing the Middle East right now. What might happen next? What can the United States and Europe do to stop it? Presenter Audrey Carville in conversation with Gershon Baskin, who has been advisor to both Israeli, Palestinian and international prime ministers on the peace process, Dr Yvonne Ridley is a journalist and author - she was taken hostage by the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001, and Dr Leon Litvack is from Queen's University.

Recording of our August 21, 2024 webinar with Dr. Gershon Baskin. This conversation was hosted by Madeleine Cereghino. It is clear that people around the world– and the mediators sent to the table in Doha– want an agreement to stop the violence in Gaza and to bring the Israeli hostages home. But the general understanding of how to get from point A (calling for a deal) to point B (getting the Israeli government and Hamas to agree to a deal) remains murky. To shed some light on the circumstances surrounding this round of negotiations, we sat down with Dr. Gershon Baskin, a veteran peace activist and longtime researcher of the Israel/Palestine conflict and peace process.
