By 1942, the skies over Germany were aflame with German fighters battling Allied bombers for the survival of Europe and the free world. Central to victory were the fighter planes of the Allies. At first they were obsolete and woefully inadequate. But with the advent of aircraft like the P-47 Thunderbolt and the P-51 Mustang, the tide of war was about to change. In this episode we hear the words of fighter aces Clarence "Bud" Anderson in his revolutionary P-51 and Francis "Gabby" Gabreski, flying the P-47 Learn more about your ad choices. Russia ratcheted up air attacks by drones and missiles on Ukraine this week. The increase comes as President Trump has expressed frustration at Russian President Vladimir Putin's seeming unwillingness to enter talks to end the war. Trump indicated the U.S. would resume shipments of weapons to Ukraine that had previously been suspended. As the Soviets were fighting the Germans all along a 1000 mile long front, they were demanding that the Allies in the west do something to open a second front against the Germans. We'll get to the Allies eventual response to this in a couple of episodes, but the western allies had the same problem invading Europe that the Germans had had when they were thinking about invading Britain. That problem was the English Channel. In order to send an invasion fleet across the channel to land in France, the Allies had to have complete control of the air above the channel, to protect the invasion fleet from German planes. So before the sea-borne invasion could take place, the Allies needed to defeat the Luftwaffe, or at least drive them back from their bases in France where they could attack an invasion fleet. So the Allies started building up their air forces in Great Britain. The Royal Air Force, which had done such a heroic job of defeating the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain, had continued to build up its fighter and bomber forces. But early 1942, they were joined by the newly formed American group, the Eighth Air Force. The Americans began to ship men, planes, bombs and ammo, and fuel to Great Britain. By the end of the war, the Americans are going to have over 200 airbases in Great Britain, with over half a million men on those bases, and over 50,000 planes.

In this explosive segment, Tara Servatius and Lee uncover a stunning military and political reversal in the Middle East. As Israel carries out airstrikes without losing a single plane, Tara reveals how Trump has now delivered a chilling message to the Ayatollah: we know where you are—and surrender is your only peaceful option. They expose how the Biden administration's betrayal in Afghanistan, especially the abandonment of Bagram Air Base, may now force the U.S. to lead a high-risk, long-range strike on Iran's underground nuclear facility. From drone assassinations to the GBU-57 mega bomb, this episode connects foreign policy failures, media censorship, and election interference into one chilling conclusion: none of this would be happening if Democrats were still in charge.
For days Israel has been attacking Iran with airstrikes, which they say is an effort to degrade Iran's nuclear capabilities. Iran has been responding by firing missiles at Israel. We'll hear what has been hit and what targets may be next. And we compare the two countries' ability to defend against these types of attacks.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

After many months long wait, F-16s have finally arrived in Ukraine. How are the Ukrainians likely to use them and what are the challenges and opportunities presented by the introduction of this new weapons platform? Dmitri Alperovitch talks with Justin Bronk, Senior Research Fellow for Airpower and Technology at RUSI and and the editor of a just released book "The Air War in Ukraine." They discussed why F-16s will not play a transformative role on the battlefield, why Ukraine still needs Swedish Gripens, the opportunities for the use of Harpoons on F-16s to target Black Sea Fleet, opportunities for integration of Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles, the growing danger presented by Russian surveillance drones penetrating deeper and deeper into Ukrainian territory which is driving the urgency for development of anti-UAV UAV solutions, PATRIOT battery performance so far in Ukraine and discussion on the longer-term future of air power and integration challenges of combat jets with unmanned loyal wingman systems. The Houthis continue to attack commercial vessels in the Red Sea amid Israel's assault in Gaza. This Yemen-based political and military organization says its disruption of international shipping is a response to Western support for Israel. It likely also hopes its attacks will revitalize flailing domestic support within war-torn Yemen. The United States is no stranger to the Houthis. Since the start of Yemen's civil war in 2014, Washington has backed a Saudi-led coalition fighting the Iran-backed organization. More recently, the United States has launched airstrikes against the Houthis to try to deter future Red Sea attacks — though President Biden acknowledges the bombing to be ineffective. In this episode of None of the Above, the Institute for Global Affairs' Mark Hannah sits down with Alexandra Stark to help us better understand the Houthis, the illogic of America's approach to Yemen, and the lessons for dealing with the Houthis in the future. Alexandra Stark is an associate policy researcher at the RAND Corporation. Her research focuses on Middle East security and cooperation. Prior to that she was a senior researcher at New America. Her book, The Yemen Model: Why US Policy Has Failed in the Middle East is set for release in April by Yale University Press. Turning Tides: Italian Strides will discuss the hundred years of Italian history which shaped Italian politics up to the present-day. The first episode, Fruits of Ash and Poison, will cover the period from 1896 to 1915, in which Italy prospered economically but became susceptible to nationalist ideals, sketchy politicians, and propaganda, which led directly to Italy's involvement in World War I.If you'd like to donate or sponsor the podcast, our PayPal is @TurningTidesPodcast1. In this episode, Dr. Luke Truxal joins me for his third and final 1943 episode to talk about the Schweinfurt / Regensburg raids and Operation Starkey, a Military Deception (MILDEC) plan organized within the larger Operation Cockade. We talk about intelligence failures from inaccurate analysis and wrong conclusions, over confidence and false confidence stemming from such conclusions, and the inflation of numbers when reporting on air raids after missions. Dr. Truxal will be back next year to cover more Air Power and Air War in Europe history in the 1944 series. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mother-of-tanks/message
In this episode, we welcome Chloe Melas to the show. She is a journalist and entertainment reporter for CNN and HLN. She's also the granddaughter of World War II pilot Frank Murphy, who authored the book which is the main subject matter for today's interview, Luck of the Draw. In that book, Frank Murphy details the almost-unbelievable air war that took place during WWII. Murphy was one of the few survivors from the 100th Bombardment Group, aka “The Bloody Hundredth”. Also in the book, Murphy details when his B-17 was shot down over enemy territory in Germany and time in German POW camps. Frank Murphy's story is going to be featured prominently in an upcoming Apple TV+ television show called Masters of the Air, which will release later this year. The project is headed up by Steven Spielberg and stars Tom Hanks. In this interview, we discuss her hearing stories about the War from her grandfather, how she became so interested as an adult in the details of the air war during WWII, the extreme loss of life suffered by pilots during the war, the circumstances that led to her grandfather's B-17 being shot down, him being captured in enemy territory, his time in a German POW camp, how she wants her grandfather to be remembered, and much more.
