Over the past three decades, Earlene Irving has weathered life's storms without a single visit to the doctor, a feat she credits to her steadfastness to biblical principles, both in diet and daily living. Our conversation with Earlene isn't just an exploration of organic foods and clean living; it's a deep look into how her conversational relationship with God has anchored her through life's unrest. Her story discusses the understated yet powerful role of stress management and the comfort found in moments of quiet reflection, offering peace in a broken world.Discovering Earlene's personal narrative, we navigate the intersection of obedience, faith, and healing. Confronted with a severe illness, she faced the brink of despair but found her compass in her faith, which guided her back to health. This episode exemplifies how the trials that test our faith can also deepen it, illustrating the biblical tale of Naaman as a parallel to our modern struggles with health and obedience. Listeners will find great comfort in Earlene's testament to the power of unwavering faith and the courage to seek wisdom, even when it defies conventional logic. Finally, we highlight the incredible work of HealingStrong, the non-profit that Earlene champions. This organization's mission resonates throughout our discussion—providing hope, community, and resources for those on the healing path. Earlene's invitation to join the HealingStrong group in North Carolina extends beyond our discussion. This episode is more than a podcast; it's a vessel carrying messages of empowerment and the indescribable connection of how faith, health, and community support can carry one through even the darkest of times.Connect with Earlene's Group:Meets in-person and onlineHarmony/Raleigh/Central North Carolinahs.centralnc@gmail.com717-884-5103Podcast Mentions:-Chris Wark & Square Onechrisbeatcancer.com-HealingStronghealingstrong.org-HealingStrong Groupshealingstrong.org/group-directoryHealingStrong's mission is to educate, equip and empower our group leaders and group participants through their journey with cancer or other chronic illnesses, and know there is HOPE. July 7, 1973. Tampa, Florida. The nude body of 34-year old Earlene Barksdale is discovered in the back office of the children's clothing store she owns and she has been raped and shot in the head in an apparent robbery. Police soon focus on a suspect named Joseph Green Brown, who was involved in a similar robbery at another location on the exact same date. After he is implicated by an accomplice, Brown is charged, convinced and sentenced to death for Earlene's murder. However, even though Brown comes dangerously close to being executed, the case against him is fraught with problems, so his conviction is eventually overturned and he is released from prison in 1987. Even though there seems to be evidence which implicates Earlene's spouse as a possible alternate suspect, no one else is ever charged with her murder. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a very controversial and complex murder case which has contained a number of shocking developments over the past five decades. Hurricane Ida was the second most destructive hurricane to make landfall in the United States, with winds reaching up to 149mph. While many civilians were busy evacuating or hunkering down in their homes, a large population of homeless people were outside trying to obtain shelter of their own. Some made it into hotels, apartments, hospitals, and homeless shelters, while others were forced to hide behind walls and use trees to shield from the wind. The homeless story of Hurricane Ida is an interesting one—filled with tales of incredible endurance, striking survival, and a deep love of home: New Orleans, Louisiana. Episode 61.Subscribe at bedletter.substack.com Follow Christian on TwitterThis is the final part in my two-part series on the homeless experience in New Orleans. In the first episode, we heard the stories of Cris, Michael, Earlene, Lo, and Adam. In this production, we hear the voices of Elton, Eric, Stephanie, and Lane. Each person had a different take on the storm, and in many cases, weathered it in their own way. Some received help from FEMA while others found it impossible to catch word of where to be at the right time. The voices we hear in these two episodes allow those of us on the outside to gain a better understanding of what it’s like in the middle of an intense natural disaster. What’s more, we are able to get first-hand accounts of those that were on the front lines of it. We hear about how the locals helped the locals, how dark the city got during the power outages, how loud the raging wind and rain were, and how dangerous it was to navigate the storm. Having never been in a hurricane myself, I appreciated bridging the gap between what I imagine happening with what actually occurred.A huge thank you to those who gave me their time and energy throughout this production. Your stories are real, your voices are heard. Most importantly, they are remembered. For those interested in donating to the relief of people most seriously impacted by Hurricane Ida, I have included a link below. Today my guest Earlene and I will be discussing the whole idea of supporting the trait of creativity within yourself and others. This conversation is especially for you if you work with a team of creatives or you’re a parent who is raising a creative child.Earlene Coats is the Founder and President of Everyday University. As someone who went from failing scribble art in kindergarten to becoming a now extremely successful entrepreneur, she knows exactly what it’s like to have your dreams squashed AND what it’s like to achieve them anyway. Today she helps busy moms go from chaos to confidence so that they can raise independent, confident children while creating an unbreakable family bond.Remember: Your version of creativity won’t always look like the person next to you. It also might be fueled differently. For example, you might need a more traditional education or you might need an alternative education. Either way, search for what best serves you and don’t feel the need to compare yourself to others. Research: Who were the characters in your life that supported your creativity? Who were the ones that didn’t? Explore how that affected you and your career today. Then take notice of the possible roles you’re playing within the lives of the creatives around you.Challenge: Practice speaking life into the creatives around you. This doesn’t mean you need to lie about liking something that you don’t. Be honest and be constructive! Your goal is to challenge someone to be even better, not discourage them from their dreams.https://www.victoriaruke.com/To learn more about Earlene and her services: https://everydayuniversity.com/To schedule some time with Earlene: https://calendly.com/earlene-everyday-university/30min

While growing up in the projects of Portsmouth, Ohio, Chuck Ealey realized very early in life that sport was the only vehicle that would help him rise above poverty and be THE driving force that would lead him to getting an education. His mother Earlene was an influential figure in his life and although she only had an eighth grade education herself, she instilled in Chuck a firm belief that staying in school would allow him to find a better life for himself and to provide for his own family one day in ways that she couldn't provide for him. Earlene taught Chuck many valuable lessons in life that would go on to serve him so well in the world. In his own words, she provided him with a strong sense of love and helped him to understand the power of connection, trust, respect and having a vision. When Chuck reflects back on early days, he is filled with pride in knowing that he had surrounded himself with such a supportive community of athletes while growing up. A few of his pals would go on to play professional baseball, but Chuck's path led him in a different direction. One fateful day, while tearing it up on the basketball court in a high school match, a University of Toledo scout spotted him and recognized the enormous talent he had. However, it wasn't a basketball recruiting scout, but instead a football scout. After that game, Chuck was offered a full ride football scholarship as a QB at the University of Toledo and would amazingly go on to having an undefeated record of 35 straight wins which still stands today as the best in NCAA history among starting QBs.What defines Chuck the most, however, is not his athletic accomplishments or becoming the first African-American QB to win a professional championship in football, but rather the life that he has led away from sport…..getting a university education for himself and being the father, husband, and grandfather he is, as well, the work he has done with his foundation which inspires People To Discover and Embrace Their Undefeated Spirit To Better Themselves and Their Community, One Play At A Time.Chuck Ealey's life led him from America to Canada to pursue a dream of setting up a good life for himself and his family. He played professionally for 7 seasons in the Canadian Professional Football League winning one grey cup. He passed for over 13,000 yards and 82 touchdowns in his career. The impact he had on the game inspired a generation of amazing QBs such as Warren Moon, Damon Allen, Tracy Ham, Condredge Holloway and many more to follow in his footsteps. In 2012 a documentary was made about Chuck's life and his journey. The documentary is called Stone Thrower- The Chuck Ealey Story which highlights his battle with racial intolerance that led him playing professional football in Canada, where he proudly remains to this day. You can find the documentary online, as well a link to it can be found in the show notes of this episode. We're going to take a look at one of America's greatest and most forgotten competitors – Earlene Brown. She is the greatest American women's thrower of the 20th century. Four years ago, Michelle Carter won the women's shot put title at the Rio Olympics. She was the first American woman to win gold in that event at the Olympics. She was the first medalist since Brown in 1960. Brown is the only other woman to have won an Olympic shot put medal beside Carter. In 1958, Brown finished the year ranked No. 1 in the world in the shot put. The only other American woman to do that is Carter. She went on to win her bronze in the discus and finished 6th in the discus at the 1960 Olympics. Four years later, she finished 12th in the shot put at the 1964 Games. She became the first woman to compete in three Olympic shot puts. Not the first American woman but the first woman from anywhere in the world to accomplish the feat. Then throwing ran its course for Brown...she moved on to another pro sport – roller derby. She stayed in that sport for 11 years. "When I was young I was ashamed of my size," she once said. "I never thought something of which I was ashamed -- my size and my strength -- could make me feel proud. But I am proud now."⁣ Here's a 1967 Interview with Brown: https://diva.sfsu.edu/collections/sfbatv/bundles/190890 ▶ Follow CITIUS MAG: twitter.com/CitiusMag | instagram.com/citiusmag | facebook.com/citiusmag ✩ Connect with Jesse and the show via Email: trackhistorypod@gmail.com | twitter.com/tracksuperfan

Earlene, Denée’s mother, and Denée each grew up in the same fundamental Christian denomination. Not only were they very active members of their church but their family history of church leadership runs deep. So ‘going to church’ wasn’t just an activity but an ‘identity’ and a way of life. As their views of God began to expand beyond the boundaries of their traditions, the conflict with those in authority came to a breaking point when they were told they could no longer be in fellowship with the only church family they had ever known. When asked, “Why would you want to stay where you no longer hold the same beliefs?” Earlene didn’t have a satisfactory answer. That answer became clear, but only after much heartache and introspection. Earlene and Denée share their story of how they each made the transition and dealt with the trauma through the eyes of their perspective personality types. Today, although no longer a part of any organized religion, they continue to work with people in a variety of environments to offer comfort, support and validation to those going through similar experiences. Rather than promoting more division, their hope is to point to the whole Spiritual community where all every ‘type’ is not only welcome, but is already a part. It’s through honest conversation that we truly get to know each other. It’s through our stories that we connect.

As Season Two comes to an end, we leave with a bang! On this episode of In Their Closet, we speak with Earlene Buggs, Host and Executive Producer of the hit show featured on Facebook, Closet Chats. Earlene Buggs, Christina Murray and Felicia Henderson are the three host that makeup the Facebook Digital TV show, Closet Chats. Earlene goes into detail about the backstory of the show and shares how her connection with the women came to be. These stunning women have created a lot of buzz as three boss women discussing topics such as "Spotting A Fake Friend", "Colorism", "This is America" and more all while in a 3300 square foot closet. Closet Chats airs for up to 20 minutes per episode and the first show debuted on March 8th in honor of Women's History Day.The ultimate goal of the show is to discuss topics related to women, family, entertainment and day to day issues.  Earlene Buggs is referred to as “The Physician” - A girl’s girl and fashionista, Earlene is a wife, mother, and CEO. Her words may cut with honesty, but her genuine spirit & wisdom will have you walking away new and better than ever. Felicia Henderson is known as “The Philosopher” - Felicia is a dedicated wife, mother, entrepreneur, and the founder of the “Inspire” organization. Her rants may ruffle a few feathers, but you won't watch an episode without walking away with a new catchphrase or perspective. Christina Murray is “The Peacemaker” - Christina is the founder of the Boss Lady Network, realtor, and inspirational speaker who spent many years working in ministry. Her experiences are her truth and she means what she says... but always with non-filtered honesty. While Christina and Felicia were unable to join us in the studio , we did spend a little under an hour talking to Earlene about her Top Drawer Secrets while sharing a little Dirty Laundry. (I refer to it as 'Dirty Language' during the podcast, a Freudian Slip, while we were discussing the hate and judgement that some women speak over others.) The ugly truth and taboo subjects are all covered during this nonstop conversation full of extra ideas that will take up more space in your closet. My favorite quote in this episode is when Earlene says, "Whenever I do something for a person, I ask God to help me forget. And whenever someone does something for me, I ask Him to help me remember." Earlene, we loved your kind and humble spirit and we are cheering on the success for the new show. Tune in to Closet Chats for more episodes from the ladies!

EVENING IN PARADISEThe life of Jimmy Scott is not one of meteoric stardom but a journey that has taken nearly seventy years to find its much deserved success.James Victor Scott, one of ten children, was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 17, 1925. He's known for his high haunting soprano voice & poignant balladeering. His up & down recording career, started in the early 1950's, saw a resurgence in the 1990's when he was signed to Sire Records and received a Grammy nomination after a long period of commercial inactivity. Soon after coming out of retirement, he was seen on stages around the world, performing magical & heart breaking interpretations of old torch songs, Broadway standards and even a smattering of choice modern rock tunes done with generally sparse jazz arrangements.Almost strangled by the umbilical cord at birth, then orphaned as a boy in depression era Cleveland, the odds against Jimmy Scott ever suceeding were further stacked by an abnormal genetic pituitary hormonal defect known as "Kallman's Syndrome" which accounts for his somewhat effeminate looks & unnaturally high singing voice.Finding solace onstage, he sang in combos of the post war R&B era, notably as a featured singer with band leader Lionel Hampton, with whom he made his recorded debut in 1950(although his name did not appear on the label). He was finally signed to a steady record deal when he was almost 30, when Herman Lubinsky of Newark's Savoy Records offered Cleveland's finest balladeer a shot circa 1954. Lubinsky, whose label was a great repository of jazz & blues recordings, was also a notorious shyster. In David Ritz's 2002 bio of Jimmy Scott "Faith In Time", Seymour Stein of Sire Records recalls past colleagues at the time calling Savoy Record's Newark HQ the "Slave Barracks". Savoy recorded some well received Little Jimmy Scott sides, but due to Lubinsky's malfeasance, Scott went mostly uncompensated. As time wore on, he grew discontent, started retreating into booze and left the label's fold by the beginning of the 1960's.Over the years the Lubinsky/Savoy contract would stifle Scott in numerous ways, particularly when he tried to break free and record for Ray Charles' Tangerine label in the early 1960's and another time with Atlantic in the late 1960's. Lubinsky would battle to have the records withdrawn, keeping Scott's music from ever hitting the streets en masse.1969's attempt at a comeback LP "The Source" was produced by Joel Dorn for Atlantic, featuring backing from a hot group of players including David Fathead Newman on tenor sax, Eric Gale on guitar and Ron Carter on bass...The record was withdrawn due to lawsuit after the first pressing, for a longtme making it a rare and often bootleged masterpiece.Jimmy's numerous shots at stardom were so hampered by the fiscal mismanagement & bad business dealings, it lead him to frustration, failed relationships, drinking and drugging, and a career ending downward spiral that took him away from the limelight. His talent was never in doubt, but his successes were measured at best.A favorite of performers ranging from Billie Holiday & Dinah Washington, to Frankie Valli, Stevie Wonder, and John Lennon, all whom knew of and expressed respect of his work. Said Quincy Jones once,'Jimmy would tear my heart out every night with his soul-penetrating style"...Even Madonna has said "Jimmy Scott is the only singer who makes me cry,"Strangely enough, it appears death that actually the catalyst that brought Scott's career back to life...By the late 70's and early 80's some of his only gigs were occasional charity appearances at senior citizen homes. Scott's day jobs at Bob's Big Boy and in a Cleveland Sheraton hotel gave him a mindset that was set far from keeping abreast of the changing tastes of a fickle record buying public at the tail end of the 20th century. In 1985, at age 60, he returned to the eastern seaboard, and for the first time in over a decade started working small clubs in New York and Harlem, perhaps getting occasional nostalgic write ups in the NY Times or Village Voice. Scott's subsequent shift back into the public eye ironically began to truly gather momentum at The Riverside Funeral Home on St.Patrick's Day 1991. The sad/happy occasion was legendary rock n roll songwriter and old friend Doc Pomus' funeral.Jimmy had met Pomus back in the 40's, and they had stayed in touch. In fact, in 1987 Doc even wrote a letter to trade publication Billboard extolling Scott's virtues, decrying the hard times he was going through, and warning the record industry not to sleep on a chance to catch the long overdue second coming of Little Jimmy Scott. Now a few years later, Scott sat Shiva and was asked by Doc's family to perform "Someone To Watch Over Me" at the funeral, along with backing from fellow old timers Dr. John on piano and Fathead Newman on sax. Scott arrived early and sat unasumedly with hands folded in the back with his 4th wife Earlene. After the colorful eulogies, Jimmy's haunting voice over the tinkling keys stunned the room, with many so far back they could barely see his tiny head over the crowd. The room was filled with dozens of music biz luminaries, like Ahmet Ertegun, Jerry Wexler, and the aforementioned Seymour Stein of Sire who felt it was almost his spiritual duty to Doc to simply offer Scott a dignified deal.Jimmy later told a reporter in 2000 of the bittersweet good fortune coming from his friend's death, " The next day, this cat from Warners comes over with a contract. It was like Doc's hand reaching out from the grave."He went on to many new career highights ranging from appearing in David Lynch's Twin Peaks & having sold out shows across the US & Europe to performing onstage at Bill Clinton's inaugural ball gala in DC.Still Scott copes with the fact that his type of fame is fleeting, and has duly noted this phenomena when he sang onstage in the 1990's with the Grateful Dead to a crowd of thousands in his hometown of Cleveland, where the local daily paper referred to him as an "unknown female singer".Since the quirky career kickstart given to Scott from Pomus' funeral, he has continued touring, recorded some 8 or so albums on half dozn labels, and added a 5th wife to his bio as well. Now with his aged infirmities creeping in, Scott is restricted to moving around onstage via wheelchair...Music continues to be his life into his eighties, once telling ajournalist “I love performing. You live with reality every day. You can’t miss it. We can try to avoid a lot of trials in life, but it’s better to overcome than avoid. That’s what music has been for me. It’s been my opportunity to overcome.”"All I can do is give what I really feel." "It'll work out in the end. You gotta believe" Jimmy ScottTo Visit JIMMY SCOTT'S website CLICK HERE
