April 15, 2005. Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. After taking the day off work and leaving on a road trip, 59-year old Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar fails to return home and is reported missing. The following day, Ray's abandoned car is discovered 60 miles away in the town of Lewisburg, parked across the street from an antiques mall. Over the course of the next several months, Ray's county-issued work laptop and its hard drive are discovered in the nearby Susquehanna River, but the hard drive is too damaged to recover any data. A number of different theories are pushed forward, which include Ray disappeared voluntarily, completing suicide by jumping into the river, or becoming the victim of foul play, possibly in connection to the infamous Penn State child sex abuse scandal. However, there is no conclusive evidence pointing to any of these theories and Ray Gricar is never found.  If you have any information about this case, please contact the Pennsylvania State Police at (814) 355-7545. Support the show: Patreon.com/thetrailwentcoldPatreon.com/julesandashley Additional Reading:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Gricar https://charleyproject.org/case/ray-frank-gricar http://old.post-gazette.com/pg/05109/490420-85.stm https://www.pennlive.com/news/2020/04/the-hunt-for-ray-gricar-15-years-of-clues-theories-and-the-search-for-answers.html“The Serial Killer's Apprentice: And 12 Other Stories of Cleveland's Most Intriguing Unsolved Crimes” by Ray Gricarhttp://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2011/07/utah_detainee_isnt_gricar_but.htmlhttps://www.cnn.com/2015/04/15/us/ray-gricar-missing-prosecutor/index.htmlhttps://www.pennlive.com/midstate/2015/04/ten_years_later_ray_gricars_di.htmlhttps://www.centredaily.com/news/local/education/penn-state/jerry-sandusky/article42806712.htmlhttps://www.centredaily.com/news/article42828846.htmlhttps://www.wearecentralpa.com/news/podcast-gives-new-insight-on-district-attorney-ray-gricars-disappearance-16-years-later/https://www.northcentralpa.com/news/crime/no-answers-16-years-later-in-disappearance-of-centre-county-da-psp-says-case-still/article_8e33cc04-72d1-11eb-ab98-f30bcdaa197b.html

The Ghost Furnace - Episode 115 "State College Sasquatch"   This week we look at a recent report of a bigfoot in an unlikely, and familiar location. The area along Spring Creek between State College and Bellefonte is a place we have fished many times over the years. It holds a special place in our hearts. So when we heard someone had recently reported a class A encounter, we were eager to look into the story. In many ways this is a textbook sighting, how that affects your opinion of the veracity of the story is up to interpretation.   Here is a link to the BFRO report we reference in the episode: www.bfro.net/GDB/show_report.asp?id=78276   If you have a story you'd like to share or a topic you'd like us to research, you can find us on Instagram, Youtube and TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com

Salmon? In Central PA?! Season 2, Episode 52

Seen Through A Glass

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2025 58:20

No, there isn't a salmon run on the Susquehanna, but you CAN get really fresh (frozen) salmon in central PA!  A couple episodes back, we talked about the five pound box of frozen haddock. This time, I talked to the people who actually catch sockeye salmon (and rockfish, and cod, and the big king salmon) up in Alaska, fillet and freeze them, and bring them back to us, wild-caught, and next best to fresh. I interviewed Captain Steve Kurian of Bloomsburg's Wild For Salmon and also talked to two other area fishermen, Captain Dan Brigham of Capt'n Dan's Wild Caught Alaskan Salmon, and Ron Rovansek of Bellefonte's Kodiak Rush. Bring your weather gear, this interview is like being out on the boat! What else? With a story like this, I had to cook some salmon! And I did, on my new soapstone insert for my Kamado Joe grill. It worked like a charm, and I cooked Wild For Salmon sockeye portions and fresh asparagus on it, and baked two local potatoes on the grill. Great meal!  'That's great,' I hear you say, 'But what about the drinks!' I sampled Elk Creek Cafe's new Valley Vista Cream Ale, and I also got in a plug for my friend John Holl's podcast This Week in Rauchbier, the world's most important podcast about smoked beer. Listen to it, I beseech you! Next episode? Got a lot of choices for a change -- got four interviews in the can, doing another one tomorrow night! -- but I think we're going to go with a food producer who's way back in the Pennsylvania Wilds. You've probably seen their stuff. See you again in two weeks! Until then? TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE PODCAST! Seen Through A Glass is sponsored by the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau. Got some hot stuff for you! Friends warned us that food would be bland in central PA...but not all of it! I talked to two pepper product people; Beth Cowher, who makes her Backyard Flavors sandwich peppers in Aaronsburg, and Janet Robinson, who's been making her Piper's Peck products on the hill outside of Bellefonte since 1998. We talk Scoville units, and pepper jellies, and how to cool the burn; all that hot fun stuff.  What else? Well, we haven't cooked for a while, so I'll tell you about how I finally solved a 45 year cooking mystery that's been bedeviling me (with the help of the good folks at the Penns Valley Meat Market). And my basement bar is finally done, and, well, I'm pretty excited about that! Next episode? I'm headed up to northeast PA where my friend Chip The Beer Guy has pulled off something a little bit magical. I'll talk to him about it, and visit five breweries (and an OG beer bar, and a neighborhood kielbasa butcher)...in two weeks! Until then? TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE PODCAST! It's fish fry time, and that means Fish Fry Friday! I love fish fries! The crisp crust of fried haddock, the tender flake of baked cod, and the banquet of side dishes -- french fries, mac & cheese, cole slaw, stewed tomatoes! -- and a sweet delight at the end. It's even better when it's a community meal, served by volunteers and enjoyed at long tables with folks you may or may not know (and with the desserts being a huge spread of homemade wonders to choose from).  So I did an episode on them. What's in a fish fry, why we do them, how they started, and where to find one locally (Don't miss the links below!). There's an interview with the two people who run the huge fish fry at St. John The Evangelist in Bellefonte, where they take us behind the scenes to tell us how and why it works. (You guys are crazy about french fries!). And I've got some interesting fish fry facts along the way, like the Irish monks who managed to come up with an excuse to eat roast goose during Lent, and the broad history of fish fries in America. What else? There's a Lock Haven follow-up: a visit to the Main Street Grill for dinner and cocktails. And not to bury it, but big news on the sponsor I've been hinting about! Here's a hint: listen for news on the Hoppy Valley Brewers Fest.  Next episode? We're finally back to town profiles, as I visit Mansfield, and interview Jarrod York at Yorkholo Brewing. The history, the landmarks, the myths and tall tales of Pennsylvania are a mission for author Jeffrey Frazier, who makes his second appearance on The Sunbury Press Books Show. A Centre County native, Jeffrey grew up in a "Tom Sawyer sort of way," and his boyhood explorations have turned into a five-decades-long search. In "The Pennsylvania Mountain Landmarks" and "Pennsylvania Fireside Tales" series, Frazier uncovers legends and folk tales known and unknown.  These stories are, as Frazier describes, them, "waves of time." He joins host Lawrence Knorr in reflections on those who have chronicled Pennsylvania's past tales, and what Frazier has learned. From the Blue Mountains of Berks and Lehigh Counties, the South Mountains of Adams County, the Black Forest area of Potter and Tioga Counties, to the Alleghenies and in between, there are tales you will remember and those which might have been forgotten. Jeffrey Frazier graduated from Penn State University in 1967, and earned an MBA from Rider University in New Jersey. He lives in Bellefonte, PA.

1913 was the year of the grand march for suffrage in Washington DC, the 250,000 marchers and attendees eclipsed the coverage the following day of the inauguration of Woodrow Wilson.  Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, population 4216, had its own march, on the fourth of July. Costumes were di rigeur, with a goodly number of  stately toga clad ladies and a few wild harridans on horseback, along with our intrepid girl in her Cornell cap and gown:  Anna Wagner Keichline… a native Bellefutian. We had to see this for ourselves.  So I saddled up my 2002 Honda Minivan, and made the five hour drive from New York City west on Route 80 through gently rolling Allegheny mountains to find Bellefonte and interview Nancy Perkins, her grand niece.  Nancy, a designer herself, has become the engine of Anna's transformation from a local talent to a polymath of invention.  Nancy is dedicated to preserving the work of her aunt.   She has gathered photos, patents, plans and drawings, and even has a “k-brick”, perhaps Anna's best known invention - a composite form of brick that foreshadows our modern and ubiquitous concrete block.     Not every architect has the opportunity to build skyscrapers. In Bellefonte, Anna used her talents to improve the lives of her neighbors, by designing their houses and gathering places.  She adopted a gently accommodating architectural style in the shadow of all that high Victorian lacery, and designed sturdy churches, theaters, homes, schools, and recreation facilities in her hometown that still stand well and firmly in their context. Today, we present her story:  Anna Wagner Keichline: The Legacy of Invention.   Special thanks in this episode to Nancy Perkins, Sarah Lichtman, and Jennifer Kaufmann-Buhler. Something really stood out in this interview with Bailey - she is not going to college.  She has a good business up and running right now, no debt and a clear idea of what she wants to do with her life.  At this point, except for a tweak here and there, she knows what she needs to know to continue to grow her business and have it be her sole form of income. Bailey realizes that a time may come where she needs business acumen or some sort of craft methodology that she does not currently possess.  However, since she learned all the skills she needed to do what she is doing now through YouTube, she has all the confidence in the world that she can repeat that process if needed.  If that wont work, she is not opposed to taking a class or two.  But, she is opposed to devoting four years and a bunch of tuition to a degree that won't make one bit of difference in her business and will only hold her back for almost 1/2 a decade.

After 268 full-length episodes and 32 minisodes, “The Trail Went Cold” has finally reached the milestone of our 300th episode and to commemorate the occasion, we are covering one of our most highly requested cold cases. The Unlucky Sperm Club Nelson Tressler pt 2In October of 1971, two police officers were shot by John Tressler in a small town of Bellefonte, PA. One died, Officer Ronald Seymore. During the first trial, John Tressler’s daughter testified the reason behind the shooting was because, allegedly, officer Seymore had raped her on a traffic stop and she had become pregnant. That baby boy, has now grown up and written a book titled, https://amzn.to/3qGdlP3 (“The Unlucky Sperm Club: You Are Not A Victim of Your Circumstances.” ) Nelson Tressler is my guest on the program today. Nelson grew up with that stigma attached to his name, in a small town environment where everybody, literally, knows your name. He joined the Air Force and after serving completed his college degree at the University of Nevada and spent 20 years in commercial real estate as one of the top producing agents in the nation. He has personally brokered will over $1 Billion in commercial real estate deals for his clients. Nelson founded a company called “IGOTSMARTER”, built on 25 years of life lessons he picked up from his “murder to millions” story.” He helps his clients to implement philosophies, goal setting and personal development techniques that he has used over the years to build his personal success. Back in the 1970’s there was no DNA evidence or anything like that. So, your mother, Diane, it was basically her word against the reputation of a police officer whom her father had murdered. That did not sound like a good situation anyway you looked at it. What was life like in your town after that, while you were growing up? How did your family, the other brothers and sisters, your aunts and uncles, handle the situation? And how did they relate on a daily basis with you? When and why did you decide to join the Air Force? You served on a few deployments, correct? When you finished your tour of service, I’m guessing going back to your home town was not something that you wanted to do? You graduate and start your first company. What was that company about? What did you do? How did you become involved in commercial real estate? Tell us about your company IGOTSMART. It is about creating and achieving goals and uses an app based system? Tell us about this and how it works? It is based on 15 philosophies you’ve lived by and achieved your success. We don’t have time to go into all 15, but give us your top three… Why did you decide to write your book, https://amzn.to/3qGdlP3 (“The Unlucky Sperm Club?”) Was this a sort of, therapeutic way of dealing with your past and turning it into something positive? Something that might help others? In your book, you share how someone can reject their victim mindset and take control back over their life – regardless of what cards they have been dealt. Give us a couple of examples of how they can do that… Nelson, I appreciate your openness and your willingness to help others by sharing your story. Your book is definitely a must read. Folks, I just cannot express in words the needfulness of you to buy this book. Nelson has shared things in this book that we have not even had time to cover. And those we did cover today, really, we just barely scratched the surface. His willingness to take the tragic story of how he came to be and the environment in which he grew up, an environment of not his making, is worth reading about in this book. But then, he shares how he turned his life around! Praise God! He shares how he turned what look like a cursed life into a blessed life. It did not happen overnight. But it did happen. And now, through this book and through his company IGOTSMART, you can read about it and learn about it and implement these strategies yourself. Amen! Go down into the show notes and order your copy of Nelson Tressler’s great book, https://amzn.to/3qGdlP3 (“The Unlucky Sperm Club: You Are Not A Victim of Your Circumstances But A Product of Your Choices.”) In fact, order two or three copies and bless Support this podcast

Your mother was one of, I believe 16 children. So things were pretty tight as it was. I grew up in that time. Inflation was high, unemployment was going up. The racial tensions were high, we had just come of the 1967-1969 turmoil. Vietnam was still going, etc. So life could not have been easy for a large family like that, correct? When I read the book excerpt, I was immediately drawn in. Give us the background on what happened with your grandfather on that fateful day in October 1971. Your mothers allegations did not come out until the defense portion of the trail? The prosecutors had no idea this testimony was going to be offered? Back in the 1970’s there was no DNA evidence or anything like that. So it was basically your mother's word, Diane, against the reputation of a police officer whom her father had murdered. With the closing of Our Lady of Bellefonte hospital in Russell, our region loses a 214-bed community and referral hospital, outpatient specialty clinics, a same-day surgery center, a women's center, primary care clinics in South Shore, Cannonsburg, Grayson, and Flatwoods, 1000 jobs, and a busy emergency room. At the time the closing was announced, the wards were full, the emergency room was bustling, and people were waiting for appointments. Health Matters looks at what we’ve lost and why it matters.

Let's all be honest here - this episode rambles along and entertains but trying to come up with one theme? Yeah, that's not going to happen. Brian recaps his travels (what's new, right?), Joey coughs a lot and talks about replacing the Zig Zag already, while Wes confuses us all talking about his Jones bar conversion. Or maybe it's just me... As usual, catch up on the Strava club and a shout out to Casey our newest patron from Bellefonte, PA! Coming up this fall we are gearing up for more podcast interviews, some bike camping trips and of course unPAved of the Susquehanna River Valley. Jump in, hang on and be prepared to turn the volume up and down as we stumble along. #loveyabye #dogood #benice #goslow #respectothers
