Great Oaks, Iowa's first public charter high school, targeted at kids who have abandoned their education, will fill many needs. The greatest need might be considered a workforce pipeline that equips these oft forgotten kids with skills to immediately plug them into jobs that build financial success and rewarding careers. Available as an option to anyone in the metro with transportation availability to its campus at Park Fair Mall, this tremendous resource will fill a very critical need not only for employers, but for students who just couldn't make the current educational system work for their needs. While its first campus is in Des Moines, the goal is to expand the model throughout Iowa. Hear the full show: https://iowapodcast.com/byam-and-farley-great-oaks-high-school

Bennett Byerley launched Verb Energy with three friends out of a dorm room at Yale, cooking and delivering caffeinated bars to friends for studying. From there, they’ve scaled their business to target precisely what their customers want – personalized communications and ordering via text, flexible and easy to use subscription models, and exciting new flavors and have no intention of stopping. Verb Energy is a text-to-order energy brand that delivers healthy, tasty energy bars with the same amount of caffeine as a shot of espresso, but through all-natural ingredients, straight to your doorstep. At the core of the brand is the belief that there is nothing more powerful than human energy and that when a person feels their best, they can do amazing things. They started Verb to make people feel incredible by delivering energy in a healthy, convenient, and delightful way. Now, they are striving to change the way people get their energy and bring more humanity to how companies interact with people. I invited Bennett onto the podcast to share his inspirational tech startup story, which began in a Yale dorm room. I also learn how they’ve scaled their business to target precisely what their customers want – personalized communications and order via text, flexible and easy to use subscription models, and exciting new flavors and have no intention of stopping. The Boston-based startup has raised more than $5 million from Global Founders Capital, with Nebari Ventures, Great Oaks, Supernode Ventures, FJ Labs, Kevin Ryan, and other strategic angel investors.

Acorns to Great Oaks: Meditations for Children (BUT Adults like them too) is intended to help parents teach their children how to become aware of their wonderful world. The book aims to show their connection to our beautiful planet and how they can find strength and happiness in even the most stressful situations by accessing the power of meditation. The book is also available with a CD. In our ever-changing world children need to have tools to help them cope with life’s challenges. Acorns to Great Oaks: Meditations for Children (Findhorn Press, May 2017, $14.99) is a beautifully illustrated book of 22 meditations for children designed to help kids deal with their own emotions and find confidence, peace and happiness within so they can easily apply ‘coping mechanisms’ into real life. As many of us grow into adulthood we develop bad habits and poor ways of dealing with stress and anger. We can however, if we chose, learn good habits like how to relax, trust, breath consciously and find peace inside. One of the best ways to do that of course is through meditation. If children learn how to meditate ad become aware of a place in their hearts and minds where they can feel happy and trusting they can find peace in any situation. The book also demonstrates the power of visualization, through the creation of specific pictures in children’s minds to help them control how they feel about certain situations, what’s happening around them and where they want to be in their lives.
Welcome to episode 66 of the final surge podcast where we welcome back Coach Jay Johnson. Jay was the very first guest back in episode 1. We decided to break it up into two episodes as they were distinctly different. So in this episode, we will be talking about his high school training clinic which Final Surge will be a sponsor. If you have any interest in learning from the best coaches in the country, you will want to be there, and it is very affordable. The Lineup: You have John O'Malley - Sandburg (IL) his boy Dylan Jacobs lead much of the race and is now on his way to the Footlocker National Race. Dan Iverson Naperville North (IL) - Girls coach who’s girl’s team created one of the most dramatic moments when they came from way back to come within 5 points of knocking of Fayetteville Manilas. On Sunday, Pastor Jake talked about Kingdom Builders for the second week. Building God’s Kingdom is about global missions, local church expansion, and compassion ministry. We want everyone in our church to step up and be a Kingdom Builder by committing to 1) serve in a ministry at Great Oaks; 2) serve in a compassion ministry outside of Great Oaks; and 3) give financially to the Kingdom Builders Fund in a one-time gift and a monthly gift (above and beyond normal tithe). After Pastor Jake explained this, we were able to hear from some people in our church that are already building God’s kingdom in significant ways: Mike Hasselbusch, Kristen Springer. Kevin & Debbie Rauh, Lizzy Blanchard, and Justin Rauh. http://bible.com/events/301759

On Sunday, Pastor Jake introduced a new Great Oaks initiative called “Kingdom Builders”. Before he got into the nuts and bolts of that though, he taught on the concept of “the Kingdom of God”. Jesus taught on the Kingdom of God (or Heaven) more than any other topic. In our American culture, though, it can sometimes be difficult to understand the idea of a “kingdom”. Kingdom just means “the King’s domain.” So in one sense, everywhere is God’s Kingdom. It’s all His. But in another sense...not so much. Pastor Jake used the phrase “already, but not yet.” There is this cosmic war that started with Satan’s rebellion in heaven. God has already won that war. That happened on the cross. But the culmination (realization; manifestation) of His Kingdom will not take place until Jesus returns. Already...but not yet. The wide angle and the close-up. We live in between. The war is won, but the battle is still being fought from our perspective and souls hang in the balance. There are two kingdoms (Colossians 1:12-14): the dominion of darkness and the Kingdom of God’s Son. The Kingdom of God is not just something coming “one day”. Jesus said it’s upon us, near us, and among us. http://bible.com/events/298284

On Sunday, Pastor Jake wrapped up our “Neighboring” series with week 6 – Neighboring Church. We’ve talked over the last 5 weeks about taking the Great Commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves literally – to reach out to our actual neighbors individually. But what would it look like to not just be a neighboring person or family, but to be a neighboring church? What would it look like to do this individually and collectively (as Great Oaks)? After all, what is the true fruit of a church? Is it disciples or disciple-making churches? Just like God has sovereignly and providentially placed you and your family next to your neighbors, so has He placed us (as a church) next to our neighboring communities. These are towns and cities we currently out of our reach. God expects us to multiply – to reproduce ourselves in other communities in order to reach people in whose lives we currently have no influence. When we read the book of Acts, it becomes clear that this was God’s plan. https://www.bible.com/events/294292
Children's Corner: Acorns to Great Oaks; Meditations for Children with Marie Delanote Acorns to Great Oaks – Meditations for Children helps children to become and stay aware of the world around them, aware of their own fabulousness, aware of energy, aware of their thoughts and feelings influencing their lives and that of others, aware of their connection with this beautiful planet we live on, and aware of how they can change anything for the better, easily and quickly, in order to create trust, strength and happiness. We are creatures of habit. If we can pick up 'bad' habits (stress, anger), we can also be taught good habits. We need to teach children how to manage their own behavior instead of having others manage it for them. Meditation and being aware is coming to a place within your heart and mind where you feel happy and trusting so you can feel very good again, in and after any situation, wherever you are and as quickly as possible. Making specific pictures in the mind helps with this. It teaches children power and control over how they feel, what's happening and where they want to be in life! Acorns to Great Oaks – Meditations for Children contains 22 short meditations to help children on their way, so they can then easily apply 'coping mechanisms' into real life.
