Greg Tonagel is the head men's basketball coach at Indiana Wesleyan University. Success and winning have followed Tonagel throughout his career as an athlete and into coaching. In this episode of Practicing the Art of Faithful Presence, host David Wright is joined by five-time national championship-winning basketball coach of Indiana Wesleyan University, Greg Tonagel. To open, David asks Greg to share a little bit about his background with the listeners. Greg shares that he was born in Northwest Indiana and grew up on a dairy farm. The hard-working culture of farming was a foundational part of his upbringing. Basketball was also a significant part of his upbringing. At an early age, he remembers playing basketball in the barn on his family’s farm. He ultimately ended up playing college basketball at Valparaiso University. It was at Valparaiso, under the coaching of Homer Drew, that Greg learned how to be a leader and discovered his passion for coaching.During college, he suffered an injury that left him sidelined. Greg views this moment as a blessing in disguise, as it allowed him to focus on his relationship with God. As basketball was put to the side, he had the opportunity to realign his priorities and make God more important than his personal goals and aspirations. This time in his life was when he began to make his faith his own, and it established the course of his relationship with God. It was also at Valparaiso that he met his wife, Amy, who became a great support to him and his players. While Greg was rehabbing with his injury, he found more opportunities to encourage and pour into his teammates. Slowly, he began to see that he could begin to minister to people through a career in basketball. At the same time that Greg set his sights on a coaching career, the head coaching position at Indiana Wesleyan opened up. He interviewed on a whim, fully believing that he would not get the position due to his lack of experience. Through the interview process, though, it became apparent that Greg and the university were perfect fits for one another, and he was offered the position. As head coach, he immediately worked on establishing the type of culture that he wanted the basketball program to exemplify. The culture that he wanted to establish is what he calls the I am Third philosophy. He learned this philosophy from a summer camp he was involved with, Kanakuk. Simply put, this philosophy encourages people to prioritize their relationship with God and their relationships with others before their own needs and desires. Slowly, this philosophy has become interwoven into the culture of the Indiana Wesleyan basketball program. This philosophy has also attracted players who want to be a part of this kind of culture. Greg truly believes that the I am Third philosophy has turned into tangible success on the basketball court. This has also opened doors for him to share his faith with many people in the basketball community. To close, Greg stresses the importance of identification in Christ and Christ alone, stating that there is no I am Third without Jesus Christ at the center.Learn More about Greg TonagelLearn more about Practicing the Art of Faithful Presence.Learn more about host David Wright.

Greg Tonagel begins his 14th season at the helm of the Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball team in 2018-19. Tonagel and the Wildcats have won three NAIA Division II National Championships in a five year spans with titles in 2014, 2016, and 2018. Indiana Wesleyan won the 2014 red banner in unprecedented fashion as they became the first team to win all five of their games at the national tournament by double digit. In 2016, Indiana Wesleyan defeated the top two seeds in the tournament to claim the title. IWU beat four top-15 teams in 2018 en route to the title, including No. 1 IU East and No. 7 Saint Francis in the championship game, the fourth win over the Cougars during the season. Tonagel is a three-time NABC/NAIA Division II National Coach of the Year. In his 13 season as a head coach, Tonagel has already led Indiana Wesleyan to three national championships, one Final Four, five Elite Eight finishes, and nine Crossroads League regular season championships, including seven straight from 2009-15. Tonagel has three Crossroads League Tournament championships as well with wins in 2010, 2015, and 2018. Indiana Wesleyan has finished three seasons as the No. 1-ranked team in NAIA Division II. Tonagel's teams have spent time in the NAIA top-five in each of the last 12 seasons. In 13 years as head coach, Tonagel is the winningest coach in program history. He has the highest winning percentage (.786), most wins (361), most NAIA national tournament victories (29), most national tournament appearances (11), most Crossroads League regular season championships (9), and most Crossroads League Tournament championships (3). The former Valparaiso (Ind.) University point guard, known for his hard work and energy, has brought those characteristics to the basketball program. Tonagel was introduced as head men’s basketball coach on April 1, 2005. Drawing from experience gained from leading the Valparaiso Crusaders to four NCAA tournament appearances as a starting point guard, along with the tutelage of mentor Homer Drew, Tonagel has helped orchestrate a new era of Wildcat basketball. Prior to Tonagel’s hiring, the Wildcats had won seven games and finished last in the Mid-Central College Conference. The program improved by 10 wins under Tonagel’s tutelage in his first year on the bench and reached the NAIA Elite Eight in his second season. Making a name for himself when it comes to program building, Tonagel has done it through sound developmental teaching and high caliber recruiting. Much of the unprecedented success of the Wildcats can be attributed to the culture Tonagel built at IWU. The IWU culture is built around two biblically transforming principles; I am Third and Fearless. "It’s our core belief that God has created us for greatness when we realize our potential in becoming “third” and “fearless.” What I have come to realize is that I don’t just coach basketball, I coach people” comments Tonagel. This has helped the influence of IWU basketball to extend far beyond the court. Tonagel and his staff have been committed to using basketball as a platform for discipleship. Prior to his current position, Tonagel served as Director of Basketball Operations at Valparaiso University, where he played in four NCAA Tournaments. He also led his LaPorte High School team to the last single class state finals in 1997. Greg and his wife, Amy, along with their three children Jace, William, and Allie reside in Marion. He is active in a number of organizations and causes, most notably his church. http://www.iwuwildcats.com/sport/0/6 greg.tonagel@indwes.edu https://www.iwuhoops.net/iam3/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kevin-furtado/support

Greg Tonagel begins his 13th season at the helm of the Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball team in 2017-18. Tonagel and the Wildcats reached the summit in 2014 and 2016 as the program won two NAIA Division II national championships in three years. Indiana Wesleyan won the 2014 red banner in unprecedented fashion as they became the first team to win all five of their games at the national tournament by double digit. In 2016, Indiana Wesleyan defeated the top two seeds in the tournament to claim the title. Tonagel is a two-time NABC/NAIA Division II National Coach of the Year. In his 12 season as a head coach, Tonagel has already led Indiana Wesleyan to two national championships, one Final Four, five Elite Eight finishes, and eight Crossroads League regular season championships, including seven straight from 2009-15. Perhaps the biggest influence that Tonagel and the staff have had on the program is the work ethic that they have instilled on and off the court. Tonagel’s teams have passion and toughness. Whether it is writing a paper, helping a neighbor or working out in the gym, Tonagel demands commitment and 100-percent effort from each student-athlete. On this episode of the podcast, Coach Tonagel shares his "March Madness" moment during his playing days at Valparaiso, what basketball means to the state of Indiana, how he incorporates his faith into his coaching, what the motto of being "third" means, and the life verse that has kept him grounded in his faith.
