Hank GarrettTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Hank Garrett. Hank grew up in the rough streets of Harlem in the 1940's & 1950's. During that time he watched schoolmates die, or go to prison. Then Willie Bryant "The Mayor of Harlem" stepped in; introduced Hank to Sammy Davis Jr, and everything changed. After that, Hank began his careers in Stand up comedy, professional wrestling, martial arts, and eventually acting. In this episode we chat about his journey From Harlem Hoodlum, To Hollywood Heavyweight. That also hapoens to be the title of his new book. Hank shares stories about working with: Benny The Jet Urquidez, Sammy Davis Jr, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Dean MArtin, Buddy Hackett, Chuck Norris, Jerry Lewis Al Lewis, David Frost, and Robert Redford. Fun behind the scenes tales about 'Car 54 Where Are You?', 'Three Days of the Condor', 'That Was The Week That Was', and 'G.I.Joe'. Hank still won't name the New York mobster that gave him his first gun, or the Cosa Nostra that elped out his mom on some interesting occasions. Make sure you check out his book, and get the rest of the amazing accounts of Hank being the very first white comedian to play The Apollo Theater, touring as Tony Bennett's opener, getting kicked out of The Actors Studio, and how he repaid Robert Redford for keeping Hank from going blind! Special thanks to mutual friends Kat & Clint Howard for connecting Hank & me for this conversation.Follow Hank on social media:Twit: @MrHankGarrettInsta: @Mr_Hank_GarrettFB: Hank Garrett

The only way to survive was to fight; at school, at home, hanging out on the stoop, or walking home from school. One day when clowning with his pals on the way from school, one of his best friends collapsed right next to him. Hank thought he was kidding around. He wasn't. He was shot dead from an unknown sniper on a rooftop. It wasn't the first, or the last time, Hank would see death on those mean streets. At 9, Hank knew what it was like to get sucker punched and have your nose broken from a total stranger and for no reason. Those were the cruel lessons of life in Harlem. By 12, Hank was carrying heat: a .25 caliber hand-gun he kept loaded, hidden, and nearby at all times. By 13 he was no longer a virgin, pumping iron, and seriously studying Martial Arts. His future seemed dim; reform school, brushes with the law, beaten up by local thugs for protecting a friend, and getting evicted with his family from their meager dwelling. At 17 he became a professional wrestler, having to lie to get his license because he was underage. He posed as “Hank Daniels, the Minnesota Farm Boy” and competed against the top wrestlers on the national wrestling circuit, including Killer Kowalski and Lenny Montana, who later became an actor, appearing as Luca Brasi in The Godfather. He had a fan club, and even escorted Audrey Hepburn to a gala Hollywood-style event. Hank now had the show biz bug. But the street still had a hold on him.

Interview with Actor Hank Garrett from February 2021.
Hank Garrett was raised in a multi-cultural neighborhood. In the 1950s where poverty was a way of life, Survival was the goal and violence was the means. By age 12, Hank was carrying a .25 caliber handgun. He would either end up dead or in prison. But a serendipitous meeting with Sammy Davis Jr. changed the trajectory of Hank's life, and Hank stepped into the worlds of comedy, acting, martial arts, and wrestling. Lying about his age, at 17, Hank balanced a career as a pro wrestler with doing comedy acts at various clubs, all while still attending high school. By age 19 he had landed a role in a successful television series. With success also came challenges, however. Hank experienced love, loss, injury, and discrimination. Opportunities were lost or stolen from him. But Hank persevered. The fight inside the man, which could have proved disastrous, became his greatest asset. Up from the Streets is a true story of survival, redemption, and hope. His book, “From Harlem Hoodlum to Hollywood Heavyweight,” will make you happy, sad and will make you laugh all the way through as he tells us all the stories of his life, the famous people he worked with and all he had to go through to make it from the streets of Harlem to his hard-earned stardom. He was going to survive the street life of Harlem where he learned to become a professional wrestler along with reaching the top as a martial arts expert inducted into the Hall of Fame in both sports. Hank was also an accomplished comedian and moved on to acting where he landed the part of officer Nicholson in the highly acclaimed Car 54 Where Are You. His story will surprise and entertain you as you read of all his accomplishments, his successes, the surprises in his life and the sometimes sad stories, told in his book, From Harlem Hoodlum to Hollywood Heavyweight. Please join me for this wonderful conversation with a truly amazing human being. I am so inspired by his story and what he has created for himself and what he does to make the world brighter for others. His detailed film and television history would have been enough to talk about but that hardly scratches the surface of his life. His book is one you will want to read! As a youth, Actor HANK GARRETT grew up on the mean streets of Harlem, NY., roaming the streets as a hoodlum and constantly getting in trouble with the law. My guest is actor Hank Garrett, perhaps best known for his roles in the TV sitcom Car 54, Where Are You and the movie “Three Days of the Condor”. We discuss his complex career and his new book, “From Harlem Hoodlum to Hollywood Heavy.”
In "Three Days of the Condor" released in 1975 Joe Turner played by Robert Redford finds himself in a nightmare of murder, double crosses, a secret plan for involvement in a foreign country to protect oil supplies and a cynical view of democratic processes. Director Sydney Pollack, Producer Stanley Schneider and the screenwriting team of Lorenzo Semple Jr. and David Rayfiel have created a convoluted mystery that captures aspects of the 1970's political scene.Faye Dunaway plays Kathy Hale who is forcefully recruited to help Joe Turner, Cliff Robertson as Higgins is pushed and pulled between opposing groups within the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Max von Sydow as Joubert is every bit as cunning as the Jackal in "The Day of the Jackal" (Episode 156) and John Houseman as a CIA heavy hitter who means business. Hank Garrett as the Mailman brings new meaning to mail delivery. Dave Grusin's musical score fits the film's mood. Listen in to a fast paced espionage caper.
