Welcome to our first attempt at going Behind the Screen, a more one-on-one conversation where Justin shares some tips and stories from his years running tabletop games. In our inaugural Behind the Screen, Justin shares the background story to his Sweetwater Bank campaign he created for 5th Edition D&D while he was hired to run games at Toronto’s Storm Crow Manor. The Challenge Justin had several challenges going into making this campaign. Primarily it needed to be able to pick-up-and-go with zero prep time and little chance to meet the players before their game. And since this game was designed for the DM&Dine Program it needed to be friendly to brand-new players as well as engaging for those who had been playing for years. The set up needed to be quick and it needed to be completed within four hours exactly, every time it was played. Finally Justin wanted to subvert some of the default assumptions of D&D and use this limited time to showcase all the different and varied ways a simple story like Sweetwater could play, this also meant that he wanted to create a story that could absolutely be completed with zero combat while also being open to the players who wanted to roll dice and cast epic spells to destroy their enemies. The Set Up The story of Sweetwater Bank is pretty simple. A tavern, run by a dwarf named Tarry, has recently gotten a reputation for an incredibly popular and possibly addictive mead. Those who try it swear it’s the best thing they’ve ever had and can’t wait to get back. In fact, many people who try it never leave and so a small village has built itself around Tarry’s Tavern solely for the purpose of being close to the mead so they can keep drinking it. However the players are hooked into the mystery, when they arrive they’ll encounter a Hill Giant that has stormed it’s way into town and collapsed into Tarry’s storehouse where all his mead is being kept. But not everything about this encounter, nor this village, is as it seems. Over the next four hours the players will be tasked with unravelling the mystery of Sweetwater Bank, foiling a plot to steal Tarry’s secrets, and deciding for themselves the fate of the town and it’s residents. Special Thanks Special thanks to Sean Horbatiuk for joining us so that Justin could bounce his rambling ideas off of him. Music is licensed through Epidemic Sound Keep an eye out on our Patreon Page at patreon.com/terriblewarriors where supporters will be getting a copy this month of Justin’s Sweetwater campaign. It will be rules-agnostic and can serve as a framework for a story set in the game of your choice. If you do decide to play Sweetwater with your group let us know by mentioning our twitter account @dicewarriors!

Magic is a complicated game, made even more complicated by the fact that we shortcut things. Today we’re going to go over some patron submitted things that players might get hung up on. +1/+1 counters and -1/1- counter negate one another. Ie. If a creature has 2 +1/+1 counters on it if one becomes removed with yawgmoth for example, it will be left with a single +1/+1 counter. This can matter for cards like Marchesa, the Black Rose, or any creature with Persist or Undying Interaction between -1/-1 vs +1/+1 counters Mention the shortcut here. This can be quite confusing for new players that haven’t played on digital platform where you MUST go through all of the motions. Attacking: https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Combat_phase Beginning of Combat Step Declare Attackers Step Declare blockers step If there is First or Double strike the combat phase is extended to have another combat damage step. Combat Damage step End of Combat step Talk about the card Reconnaissance here. Combat Phases Trample creatures assign lethal damage to all creatures blocking them, and then the rest carries over Ball Lightning vs Llanowar Elf Simple example: Trample Static Ability 702.2b - A creature with toughness greater than 0 that’s been dealt damage by a source with deathtouch since the last time state-based actions were checked is destroyed as a state-based action Deathtouch As we mentioned above “Trample creatures assign lethal damage to all creatures blocking them, and then the rest carries over” Aggressive Mammoth (8/8 Trample) Mammoth is blocked by: Hill Giant x3 What do you think happens? Ohran Frostfang Here’s the thing, even one damage from a creature with deathtouch is considered lethal (702.2c), so here’s a scenario: Trample + Deathtouch. Think of these as creatures with spears, or some other long weapon Black Knight vs Grizzly Bear First Strike This creature deals First strike damage, and then normal damage. This can cause deals damage triggers to happen twice. Prophetic Flamespeaker Double Strike This is NOT bringing a creature back from your graveyard, but it would make sense if it was... This has mostly been replaced by “Becomes indestructible until end of turn” It’s a replacement effect Remove all damage marked on it Tap it If it’s an attacking or blocking creature, remove it from combat The next time ~ would be destroyed, instead: Regenerate does a few things. Regenerate Mind control effects and the summoning sickness the creature gets when you control it. https://blogs.magicjudges.org/rulestips/2012/08/multiplayer-monday-what-happens-when-a-player-leaves-the-game/ (i.e., library, hand, exile, battlefield, graveyard, command, stack) all objects OWNED by that player leave the game. all control effects controlled by that player end anything still controlled by that player gets exiled. What happens when players leave the game? A zone. The stack is the zone in which spells, activated abilities, and triggered abilities wait to resolve. See rule 405, “Stack.” FILO or LIFO (they mean the same thing) Spells and abilities are put on top of the stack as the first step is being played, and are removed from it as the last step of resolving. Any spell or ability that uses the stack can be 'responded to' by all players, meaning players have a chance to play spells and abilities with it still on the stack. Since the stack resolves in order from top to bottom, those spells and abilities will resolve before the spell they were played "in response" to. Spells and abilities on the stack resolve one at a time, with a chance for each player to play spells and abilities in between each resolution. Actions that do not use the stack, such as paying costs, playing mana abilities, or turning a face-down creature with morph face-up, cannot be responded to. The stack Players get priority Holding Priority (this can be tough on Arena, but it can be done!) Priority is the right to cast a spell, activate an ability, or take a special action. Players can't cast spells, activate abilities or take special actions at a time when they do not have priority. The player with priority may put as many spells or abilities on the stack as they wish, but before anything can resolve all players must "pass priority" without adding anything further to the stack. Priority starts with the player who takes the first action, then rotates clockwise to each player. Priority State-based actions are game actions that happen when any of a set of improper conditions arise in the game. Whenever a player would gain priority, state-based actions first check for certain game conditions. If any of those conditions are met, the necessary actions are carried out simultaneously as a single event. Then, any triggered abilities go on the stack and the check is repeated. Once no conditions for state-based actions exist, the appropriate player gains priority. List of State Based actions can be found here: https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/State-based_action State Based Actions Main Topic - Rules Summary Hopefully these rules have been helpful. We begin our session with Daryl attempting to defeat Nega-Daryl once again to hopefully attain his mother's gift. Daryl forgot he has spell resistance in Karstim form so this fight went very different. Once ND was defeated Daryl found an icy town village with dragon statues called Norwich.Dranas is sucking titties.Daryl (in Karstim form) begins to explore Norwich and finds that it is very cold and a gazebo in the middle of town is made of ice. magical ice. ice that never seems to melt, despite giving off a cold steam. D's then discovers a cathedral with a large dragon statue atop it's roof. below is inscribed a depiction of 2 eggs, one on the left and one on the right. There is also a depiction of Apsu giving birth to various deities. a sign is displayed on the front of the cathedral that reads: Norwich Church of ApsuThe cathedral is cloudy with ice and ivory. There is an area big enough for a full size dragon to enter the Narthex. Pews seem to be arranged such that humans are meant to sit to the left while dragon-sized pews are located to the right."Dernbach, Karstim" is written on a door. Upon entering the room, Karstim finds a fine adamantite set of armor and a ring that seem to be the gifts his mother intended for him. He also discovers a mysterious picture of an unknown girl (Una for now). She seems to be a daughter of the Karstim family. Has Daryl found a long lost sister? The boys teleport to the library under the Oasis.Sweets and Gaelic aren't there but Volkorn uses this opportunity to scold Dranas after learning the cost of their Black Lotus collection. They brought 3 jars with 3 bulbs of Lotus in each one... but at what cost? Volkorn is aware that entire villages have been ravaged by these creations.SweetChuck is scryed only to be found participating in a ménage à trois with 2 goblin "ladies of the night".The Party teleports there and Stug Immediately:finds snuffsnuffs the snuffbreaks the tablebegins to quickly repair the table. A weird orgy ensues. Post-Coitus, the party remembers they still haven't accounted for Gaelic's whereabouts and scry him as well but are shocked to find him being questioned by BrokeBack bandits! A super top secret highest clearance stealth tactical mission quest assignment began as the team teleported in and successfully extracted the HVT (High Value Target) from the Hot Zone without detection. Now that the Party is complete again, Volkorn scryes the undead hill giant army we've seen once before, when searching for Zarkan and the team forms a 2-step plan.1. spell cast.and2. beat ass.Volkorn and the boys then proceeded to interrupt an unexpecting wizard's lunch to turn the quarry into a murder-disco as Dranas paralyzed the caster and Karstim went to town on some hill giants. The wizard was found to be dressed in a reddish robe with a golden necklace. He also had a Mantle of Faith, and an Evil Wand of Protector. What will happen next time? Will Karstim get to satiate his hunger? are there more giants? Knallen muss es! Die Schelle für den Hill Giant, die Explosion am Höhleneingang, und natürlich muss auch Laineth etwas knallen.
Chilly dummies!
An 2951 du Troisième Âge. Les héros se rendent à Greenfield, un village à l’est de Lake-town qui présente la particularité d’avoir d’étranges ruines. On raconte qu’elles auraient été construites par des géants! Ce scénario provient de Gygax magazine #2.
An 2950-2951 du Troisième Âge. Durant l’hiver, les héros rêvent d’un œil au sommet d’une tour… Nous finissons le chapitre “Les dernières bonnes années” et entrons dans “Le retour de l’ombre”.

In this show, we introduce the new AH game show, and continue our contest for the Hill Giant and Sir Hawthorne. Mary gives the news, Moritz talks about game collections, and Jason discusses playing wargames online. Sam reviews Carcassonne: the Castle, and Mark Jackson gives us the Top Ten Kids Games You've Probably Never Played. The audio quality in this one isn't very good - I've tried to clean it up as best I could, and my apologies for that.
With the return of Moritz - giving a review of Magic Realm - we continue our contest for the Hill Giant and Sir Hawthorne. Mary gives us the news and reviews Apples to Apples, and Sam talks about Bonobo Beach. Tom gives his top ten games for young children, and we discuss once again if games age well, as well as answer other questions.
