Join us as we dive into the mechanics and challenges of Counterspell across different editions of D&D and Pathfinder! We break down what works, what doesn't, and how it impacts gameplay. Whether you're a fan of the 2014 D&D rules or prefer Pathfinder's approach or looking forward to the 2024 D&D rules, this episode has something for every tabletop RPG enthusiast! Summary In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, we dive into the mechanics and challenges of the Counterspell ability across various editions of Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder. We discuss the complexities and limitations of Counterspell in the 2024 Edition D&D and Pathfinder 1e, such as the need to ready an action and the high DC for spellcraft checks. The conversation shifts to Pathfinder 2, where Counterspell is streamlined into a reaction-based feat with a DC tied to the caster's save DC, reflecting notable improvements. We compare Counterspell mechanics in Pathfinder 2nd Edition and D&D 5th Edition, examining the strengths and weaknesses of each system. Topics include spell preparation, action economy, and the overall impact of Counterspell on gameplay and player agency. We offer differing perspectives, with one favoring D&D 5th Edition's 2014 rules and another finding Pathfinder 2nd Edition's approach more appealing. This episode provides an in-depth look at Counterspell across RPG systems, touching on its impact on the player experience and exploring possible improvements. Takeaways Counterspell in 3rd edition and Pathfinder 1 has limitations and complexities, including the need to ready an action and the high DC for the spellcraft check. Counterspell in Pathfinder 2 is a feat that can be used as a reaction, and the DC is based on the caster's save DC. The hosts express frustration with the mechanics of Counterspell and suggest potential improvements. Identifying the spell being cast is an important factor in successfully countering a spell. The limitations of Counterspell make it a niche ability that is rarely used in gameplay. Counterspells in Pathfinder 2nd Edition require spellcasters to have the exact spell prepared or use the Clever Counterspell feat at level 12. In D&D 5th Edition, counterspells can be cast as a reaction and require an ability check or a successful saving throw against the caster's spell save DC. The effectiveness of counterspells in both systems depends on factors such as spell level, spellcasting ability, and the target's saving throw proficiency. The changes in Pathfinder 2nd Edition give the target of a counterspell more agency and allow for more strategic decision-making. The 2014 rules of D&D 5th Edition provide a simpler and more accessible approach to counterspells, but some players may find them less satisfying or balanced. Counterspell can be a divisive mechanic in tabletop RPGs, with some players finding it frustrating and others enjoying its strategic elements. The hosts discuss the mechanics of counterspell in Pathfinder and D&D, including the use of spell slots, ability checks, and critical success/failure. They explore potential improvements to counterspell, such as removing the requirement to have the same spell prepared or adding additional action costs. The conversation also touches on other dice systems, including the D10 pool system and the D100 system, and the hosts share their preferences. Building an entire world for your roleplaying game is a HUGE amount of work. What if, with a click of a button you could have a world map, regions, cities, towns, villages, and more all created in just seconds? Well, with Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator, you can do just that! There are thousands of map generators in the world. But few in our experience can provide as much detail as Azgaar's. So, what does it do? Well, it of course automatically creates an entire world map. Immediately the map is created and an overview is given. In the overview, we can see all of the major kingdoms and their borders. The map and the details take on a watercolor-like art style, which is really nice. The different kingdoms have slightly varying colors that really stand out quite well. Right from here, the brain can start processing the vastness of the world. One that was created in seconds. Each of the names can easily be edited so you can add in your own special names where your stories take place, but reduces the extra workload. We can think of this entire creation as a template if we want. Of course, most map generators can do this much. So let's dig into what really sets apart Azgaar's map generator.
This week, we explore what happened between the dragons and the Scourge in WoW, how to run a D&D campaign in the Diablo universe, and tips on making your 5th Edition D&D setting cohesive and connected.
Saul and Jolene had been hearing a lot about D&D 6th Edition. Saul and Jolene checked out a lot of the latest info and right as they were recording news that WoTC was going to buy D&D Beyond for about 146 million dollars. So it looks like WoTC might be going "All In" with digital content? Saul and Jolene discuss what changes to 5th Edition might D&D 6th Edition have in store. What kind of updates to the rules might there be? The direction of some of the changes might be seen in the most recent content in the latest 5th edition books published. Will 6th Edition D&D be a huge change or will it be more like a D&D 5.5 edition? Will there be a brand new Setting for 6th Edition? A lot is discussed in this episode. As Always thanks for listening. A few episodes ago Saul made a comment about 5th Edition D&D. The gist of the comment was that a ruleset not intended as a generic RPG be used as a generic RPG. This was aimed specifically at D&D 5th edition due to one the popularity of the RPG and because of that popularity it has spawned many different RPGs using that ruleset. This was due to the number of RPG PDFs that Saul had bought and was not impressed with the use of D&D 5th edition rules OGL. That was a while ago and since then he has played many different RPGs and now Saul is thinking he may have been wrong. Especially after looking at a few RPGs whose rules have been used for completely different genres that what the original rules were used for. Saul and Jolene discuss this topic with Saul using three systems that in his mind were never intended to be used as a multi-genre, generic ruleset, but actually do a great job of exactly that. Thank you all for listening and please share our podcast. Music by Counterfeiti, song Generic, off the album A Glimpse, an Eclipse. Available from Tribeofnoise.com
This week the Steves are joined by Russ Morrissey, game designer, publisher, founder of EN World & EN Publishing, and host of Morrus' Unofficial Tabletop RPG Talk. We could talk with Russ for hours about many topics in gaming, but, today, we're talking with him about a Kickstarter project that will launch the same day that this episode goes live for his new line called "Level Up". Level Up is an expanded take on the 5th Edition D&D that many gamers know. Russ and his team have taken on the whole game, and added lots of depth that some folk have found lacking, along with greatly expanding the 'exploration pillar' of the original game, which many people find somewhat lacking in the original version. *** NOTE: as of recording, the KS should launch at noon EST (US) 10/5/21 *** Links Level Up Kickstarter Page -- https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/enworld/level-up-advanced-5th-edition-a5e EN World -- https://www.enworld.org/ EN Publishing -- https://enpublishingrpg.com/ Morrus' Unofficial Tabletop RPG Talk (podcast) -- https://morrus.podbean.com/ d20 Network Podcast of the Week -- The Story Told -- https://thestorytold.libsyn.com/ Game of the Week Steve G: Viking Death Squad -- https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/366521/Viking-Death-Squad?affiliate_id=2018399 Steve S: Warbirds -- https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/115960/Warbirds-Role-Playing-Game?affiliate_id=2018399 Russ M: Ghostbusters -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostbusters_(role-playing_game) As always folks, have fun, be kind to each other, and go play some rpgs! ROGUE RUNNERS is an actual play podcast which adapts your favorite games and other media to tabletop RPGs: delivering collaborative, improvised narratives blended with gorgeous audio storytelling. Volume 1: “In the Blood” parodies roguelike HADES while playing it as a 5th Edition D&D campaign. It tells the story of four wretched shades battling their way out of the Underworld for one more chance at life, set in the world of the original game with a new story. In the Blood meditates on the questions of punishment, redemption, and making the world better within unjust systems. Fans of mythology, queer fantasy, and improv comedy will find a lot to love in the show. While the adventurers roll dice and the show makes many loving references to the source material which inspired it, audiences need neither be fans of HADES nor D&D to fall in love with our four player characters and cast of zany mythological NPCs.

Welcome to our first attempt at going Behind the Screen, a more one-on-one conversation where Justin shares some tips and stories from his years running tabletop games. In our inaugural Behind the Screen, Justin shares the background story to his Sweetwater Bank campaign he created for 5th Edition D&D while he was hired to run games at Toronto’s Storm Crow Manor. The Challenge Justin had several challenges going into making this campaign. Primarily it needed to be able to pick-up-and-go with zero prep time and little chance to meet the players before their game. And since this game was designed for the DM&Dine Program it needed to be friendly to brand-new players as well as engaging for those who had been playing for years. The set up needed to be quick and it needed to be completed within four hours exactly, every time it was played. Finally Justin wanted to subvert some of the default assumptions of D&D and use this limited time to showcase all the different and varied ways a simple story like Sweetwater could play, this also meant that he wanted to create a story that could absolutely be completed with zero combat while also being open to the players who wanted to roll dice and cast epic spells to destroy their enemies. The Set Up The story of Sweetwater Bank is pretty simple. A tavern, run by a dwarf named Tarry, has recently gotten a reputation for an incredibly popular and possibly addictive mead. Those who try it swear it’s the best thing they’ve ever had and can’t wait to get back. In fact, many people who try it never leave and so a small village has built itself around Tarry’s Tavern solely for the purpose of being close to the mead so they can keep drinking it. However the players are hooked into the mystery, when they arrive they’ll encounter a Hill Giant that has stormed it’s way into town and collapsed into Tarry’s storehouse where all his mead is being kept. But not everything about this encounter, nor this village, is as it seems. Over the next four hours the players will be tasked with unravelling the mystery of Sweetwater Bank, foiling a plot to steal Tarry’s secrets, and deciding for themselves the fate of the town and it’s residents. Special Thanks Special thanks to Sean Horbatiuk for joining us so that Justin could bounce his rambling ideas off of him. Music is licensed through Epidemic Sound Keep an eye out on our Patreon Page at patreon.com/terriblewarriors where supporters will be getting a copy this month of Justin’s Sweetwater campaign. It will be rules-agnostic and can serve as a framework for a story set in the game of your choice. If you do decide to play Sweetwater with your group let us know by mentioning our twitter account @dicewarriors!

This is the 12th session of our D&D 5th Edition home game. Hopefully the Previously On at the beginning of the podcast will give you enough back story to follow along with what happens from here on out. We are a group of friends who play for love of the game and record for our own amusement. With that in mind this is far from professional but I wanted it online for our own entertainment. The Rise of the Runelords adventure path was created for Pathfinder but has been tweaked and is being played with 5th Edition D&D rules, with a couple of small homebrew rules. Where we talk about 4e. Oh yes we do. In this episode I reply to some of my call ins, as well as a two sided review of 4e D&D. Why it is the best edition of D&D. Why it is the worst edition of D&D. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gmsshadow/message
Vince & Travis sit down and discuss their favorite 2nd Edition D&D books. It’s time to drip in the waters of nostalgia and discuss how 2nd edition D&D gave us so many books by printing themselves out of business. What were the books they loved? Why are there so many books? What can we use of them today? All of this and less will be answered within. Want to follow everything related to Vince, Travis and Venture Land Games? On this episode of the Have Fun and Play podcast spoilers abound. Tom kicks things off with a criticism of Ralph Break the Internet. He didn’t like the movie’s message and felt it was heavy handed. Anna and Myron disagree with Tom, and unfortunately JT hasn’t seen the film yet so the ending was spoiled for her. Tom only brought up the movie to tie-in the film’s “Slaughter Race” game with Anna’s love of the Burnout series and excitement over Dangerous Driving. Some of the original forces behind Burnout formed a new company and Dangerous Driving aims to pick-up where Burnout left off in 2008. Finally, Tom has a bone to pick with Myron about initiative in 4th Edition D&D. Myron and Tom debate whether initiative should be based on dexterity or intelligence, with Tom believing that a highly intelligent individual would use their smarts to gain an advantage in combat and Myron arguing that only dexterity matters. Put another way would Stephen Hawking get the jump on Georges St-Pierre? You decide! Remember to look for all episodes of our podcasts on iTunes, Stitcher, and TuneIn. Make sure to subscribe to the show so you’ll never miss an episode. Also, you can keep up with us on our website: havefunandplay.com. We are constantly thinking about adding new content, so roll the dice and come join us!
Jason Massey joins the pod to talk about his start with 4th Edition D&D and how that evolved into a full-time career in creating the actual play podcast, Dungeons & Randomness. He speaks about his enjoyment of 4th Edition, and elements of that system that complicated the creation of podcast content. He reviews how the shift to 5th Edition smoothed the podcasting enterprise, and details how his homebrew campaign setting, Theria, came to exist. He discusses the current Kickstarter campaign for The Adventurer's Guide to Theria, and explains how the book will be useful for those running D&D adventures.
Saul and Jolene discuss what systems are good for running mystery adventures. Saul really likes the Gumshoe line of RPGs which are specifically made for running mystery games. Also good for mystery games is the Fate Core system as it is not a combat heavy game. Jolene reminds Saul that he had run a couple mystery games using Pathfinder and 5th Edition D&D. Other subjects relating to mysteries are discussed in relation to rpgs from movies like Murder on the Orient Express and tv shows like, The Rockford Files, The Republic of Doyle, and Scooby Doo. The Full line of Gumshoe games can be found here: http://site.pelgranepress.com/index.php/gumshoe/ Information about the Rockford Files show: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071042/ The Saturday Morning Cartoon Scooby Doo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scooby-Doo The Republic of Doyle tv show : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Doyle Music by Jared Leibowich, song We Love Mystery Available at FreeMusicArchive
In this episode Saul and Jolene talk about how they make encounters and things they consider when making those encounters. Jolene talks about killing Saul's newly made Paladin character in the first session he gets to play in. Well luckily for Saul they are playing 5th Edition D&D so the Paladin only went down for a couple of rounds. So Saul and Jolene discuss what goes through their minds as they try to make encounters that are challenging and fun but not overpowering. A few examples of encounters that did not go well but we learn from all things especially mistakes. We ask that you share our podcast within your social networks we would greatly appreciate it. Music by, David Hilowitz, song Close Encounter off the album Close Encounter Available from FreeMusicArchive.com
We're back from our short holiday break. We talk movies; Captain Marvel and a Dune reboot. We have Russ follow a flow-chart to find out what type of character he should play in 5th Edition D&D. We run through the winners of the Golden Globes. We talk a little about another Star Wars show Disney is producing for their streaming service. All the usual sidetracks and shenanigans.
Mike Shea - aka Sly Flourish - chats with Dungeon World creator and DM extraordinaire Adam Koebel about narrative storytelling and its influence on 5th Edition D&D.

In this episode Saul and Jolene discuss the often maligned character class of the Bard. Beginning with when the Bard was introduced in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons and on through 5th Edition D&D. Saul and Jolene talk how the Bard class has changed for a class that everyone thought was intresting but nobody played to one that more players think a Bard is a viable option. Still Saul thinks that is a class that still is not picked by players due to the role the Bard has in D&D. Saul and Jolene then discuss using Bards in other Genres and Games. Music by Daminano Baldoni, song Celtic Warrior. Available at FreeMusicArchive.com
John and I were a little off last time, so we make up for lost time by venturing through the Bard subclasses, then tackling the Barbarian in-depth, along with our own quick musings on using music in your campaigns and my observation of an extreme lack of mechanical teamwork combinations throughout 5E (probably a later topic to explore). Thanks for tuning in. I'll see you at the table. Topics covered in this episode: 5th Edition D&D, Bard Subclasses, Barbarian Class, Barbarian Subclasses, Music in Campaigns, and (minimal, for now) Teamwork Class Combinations.
Join John and I as we take a deep look at the Bard - what makes it cool, versatile, and totally awesome in 5th Edition D&D for new and old players alike. We also swing by some of our favorite multi-classing options so far in the system. This one went even longer than the last, so I think we'll trim our format down to one big topic each episode...until we change our minds. Thanks for stopping by. Roll well, fellow adventurers.
We're rounding out the player check ins this week with the always charming Aaron! Tune in to hear him talk all things Ion Lightspur and 5th Edition D&D. Also Aaron spends about a quarter of the episode talking about his idea for a Stargazer game but frankly it sounds amazing. No joke, I want to play it so bad you guys. Guest starring Stephen. This week Tony comes to us via the power of the internet (His Cellphone) to discuss coming events with the Binary Gamer Crew as they embark on an adventure in 5th Edition D&D and beyond. Tony also discusses the link between The Witcher, Dragon Age: Origins, the Elder Scrolls series, and D&D.
SYNOPSIS: Dan goes through the contents of the latest 5th Edition D&D adventure, and gives his personal feedback.
Listen to Enrique Bertran, better known as NewbieDM, discuss the evolving Dungeons & Dragons landscape during the past 10 years. He shares his insights about how roleplaying games continue to get closer to "mainstream" status, and how 5th Edition D&D is a good system. We spend time reviewing D&D's latest adventure, Tomb of Annihilation, which Enrique says "is 5th Edition running on all cylinders" and "the best adventure Wizards of the Coast has put out... since at least 2008." He delves into the specifics of the adventure - without too many spoilers - and offers Dungeon Masters advice on how to run the game a bit differently than published to enhance the experience of the players. He speaks about the benefits for using online tools such as D&D Beyond and Roll20 to run his gaming sessions, and talks about his desire for official adventure content from Wizards to be briefer. He concludes with thoughts on a possible future project geared toward a roleplaying game for children.
