UM Australia is the focus of this episode once again – like it was a year ago in (S4E8) . I caught up with race director, Jeff Morris, to preview the 40 athletes who are toeing the line in Noosa on May 11-13th. With only four previous competitors in this year's field there isn't an outright favourite, like last year's, Simon Cochrane; but the women's field looks to be very competitive. We discuss all of the athletes and some of the crew members that are returning as Ohana to support. Take this opportunity to learn more about this 515 race that has been running since 2015.Follow the athletes on Facebook during the race : https://www.facebook.com/UltramanAustraliaResources mentioned in this episode:Ultra TriFest CanadaUltra 515 World Wide ChampionshipsUM AustraliaUltra 355 AustraliaHervey Bay 100515 Podcast : S5E9 -- 515 Round Table Discussion : The State of Ultra TriathlonIronman World ChampionshipsUltraman ArizonaHeart of Courage ProjectIM CairnsUltra MX 515Ultra MX 515 Non StopChallenge RothUltraman CanadaShout outs and mentions in this episode:Shane Duffy (S4E5)Simon Cochrane (S4E8)Tony HortonHayden LyonsNick Mallett (S2E12)Dale JordanMel KempPeter HudsonJoseph ClarkTiffany DahlSteve King (S1E1) (S1E2) (S1E3)Michelle Vesterby (S5E13)Carl ReadJessica DudleySawangjit Sae-NgowClaire FergusonRebecca HoschkeMelinda CockshuttSharon AndronacoBen AmeryAlex ClearyVishesh MadanJoshua McAskilBoris BakoulineMatthew O'BrienTim JensenNestorOchoa RiveraErica LumbAran HayesTim FranklinChris AllisonAndrew StricklandAnthony VloedmansJoe StallardMark RenfreePaul McDonaldJason ‘massive head' EyBenjamin CummingsNoe Duran LunaMahesh PrajapatiTravis CoulsonIan BlatchfordKannan MurugasanTony GoodyearAdrianCopelandGail LauxAnthony LucasStuart PaynePaul GiddingsDennisDevereauxCatherine Beeson Ann Evans Kate Bevilaqua (S5E10)Melissa Urie (Coming S6E1)Steve Brown (S2E13)Lucy Ryan (S2E5)Will Rogers (S5E8)Chad Bentley (S1E1)___________________________________________________________Show Contributors:Host : Larry Ryan Contributing Raconteur : Steve KingAnnouncer : Mary Jo DionneProduction : 5Five EnterprisesMusic : Run by 331___________________________________________________________For show notes and past guests, please visit the Podcast Website: https://515theultrapodcast.buzzsprout.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/515TheUltraPodcastInsta : 515theultrapodcastEmail : 515Ultraman@gmail.com

Rob Gray is a world traveller who has benefited from the transition to remote work. He describes himself as a Boulder guy from South Africa with a British passport. We caught up during a two week period that he was home packing to move the family to Phuket, Thailand after returning from competing at the Comrades Marathon in South Africa. Rob won his first Ultraman race in Florida in 2016 and went on to race in Hawaii that same year finishing second. In fact he has stood on all three levels of the podium on the big island with a win in 2017. He shares a number of tips about training and racing the 515 distance that he has garnered over the years. We originally thought Dee Fuller overcame the usual body issues when stressing the body in an ultra event on her way to her second women's win at UM Australia. A few days later she went public on Facebook about struggling with an eating disorder leading up to, and while competing this year. Something I was not aware of when we recorded this conversation.During our conversation she was open about various eating disorders, multiple PTSD triggers and other mental health struggles brought on by a variety of traumas. (trigger alerts)She wants to discuss mental health issues in an open forum in hopes of helping others feel comfortable to do so and to help others recognize that they are not the only one's suffering. Her May 20th Facebook post in which she shares her current struggle can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/dee.fuller.125/posts/pfbid03dCrwzABMSFoK2eromiCTn75CCY13YEkUL6KeBP2PYex6rzGmkvTScGxHdsJyJjHlThis episode is the second of two that I have used to focus on Mental Health in the ultra community. The first was Season 4, Episode 2, when I spoke with Heidi Buttery who has created a website with a multitude of resources. If you require help or want to help someone else that you know is suffering, check out Heidi's website, UltraHeidi.com, or contact your local Mental Health hotline in your area. Heidi Buttery went from ultra high wealth financial advisor to ultra athlete. After going through a “mental breakthrough” manic episode she has become interested in helping others who struggle with mental health issues. In 2014, she raced Ironman to raise funds and awareness for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). She has become a strong proponent for normalizing talk about mental health and shares her journey during our conversation. In 2015, she shifted her nutrition expertise from general knowledge to specialized sports nutrition and now helps others with developing nutritional plans. In this special release I speak with Steve King who was announcing at the event to get the rundown of what happened over the three days in Noosa this year at UM Australia. I also speak with Shane Duffy to put a final pin in his record breaking six 515 races in a year. Each of the champions, Simon Cochrane and Dee Fuller also stop in for a chat about how the race unfolded for each of them. Simon set a new world record time of 19:48:47 while smashing the previous UM Australia record by over 1:30 minutes.Resources mentioned in this episode:Ultraman World ChampionshipsUltra 355 AustraliaThe Detachment Technique AppDetachmenttechnique.comAthletic PeakBadwaterShout outs and mentions in this episode:Armando Armellini (S4E9)Steve King (S1E1) (S1E2) (S1E3)Simone Cochrane (S4E8)Dee FullerShane Duffy (S4E5)Richard ThompsonCarl ReadNathan StewartKylie JonesSteve YorkSidharth YadavKaz SewellAvdhoot ShindeShaun PeroLani BullenKellie WrightKate BevilaquaJames ScanlanMatt ThompsonSteve LedgerWarren KeeganRikki AndersonMaxsim Kniazev (S1E4) Tess PrinceCharlie Llewellyn Benat OliveiraWarren KeeganAndrew KeeganJamie Shoobert Rory MorganSean WrigleyGail LauxTrilogy Cycles NoosaMarcus BrownJeremy Howard (S2E8)Larissa Cochrane___________________________________________________________Show Contributors:Host : Larry Ryan Contributing Raconteur : Steve KingAnnouncer : Mary Jo DionneProduction : 5Five EnterprisesMusic : Run by 331___________________________________________________________For show notes and past guests, please visit the Podcast Website: https://515theultrapodcast.buzzsprout.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/515TheUltraPodcastInsta : 515theultrapodcastEmail : 515Ultraman@gmail.com
UM Australia is the focus of this episode. I have a chat with race director, Jeff Morris, to preview a few of the 45 athletes who are toeing the line in Noosa this weekend. Like most 515 races, the line up includes some big names with lofty goals like Richard Thompson and his sub 20 challenge, and some people who are just challenging themselves to complete the distance. We discuss the variety of situations that bring people to take on a 515 event..My athlete in profile is New Zealand's Simon Cochrane. Simon is a pro triathlete with 37 Ironmans on his resume but is taking on the 515 distance for the first time. He is the owner of Athletic Peak, a coaching and conditioning business which focuses on supporting athletes along their endurance journey. Building to the lead up of UM Australia, Simon has recently topped the podium in a couple of ultra runs including winning “the claw”, a feat not previously attained at the Blue Lake 24 hour Challenge.Resources mentioned in this episode:UM AustraliaUltra 355 CozumelUltra 355 TexasIM CairnsIM CanadaIM Western AustraliaBasque CountryUltraman FloridaUltraman ArizonaTaupo 100 km UltraBlue Lake 24hr ChallengeTarawera 100 mile UltraIM New ZealandWynRepublicIM JapanBadwaterMarathon Des SablesNegative Split CarbonAthletic PeakShout outs and mentions in this episode:Tony HortonJudith HudsonJeremy BrownSteve KingHayden LyonsErica LumbRikki AndersonDee FullerKylie JonesKarren SewellThomas DadeAndrew TroutShaun McCarthyBenat OliveiraMathew ThompsonShane KentSimon CochraneCarl ReadRichard ThompsonJason Shields Troy GelchSteve LedgerJames ScanlanShaun PeroNathan StewartShane DuffyTim FranklinMatt KerrLuke McKenzieBeth McKenzieLarissa Cochrane___________________________________________________________Show Contributors:Host : Larry Ryan Contributing Raconteur : Steve KingAnnouncer : Mary Jo DionneProduction : 5Five EnterprisesMusic : Run by 331___________________________________________________________For show notes and past guests, please visit the Podcast Website: https://515theultrapodcast.buzzsprout.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/515TheUltraPodcastInsta : 515theultrapodcastEmail : 515Ultraman@gmail.com

I have returning to the podcast, race director, Jen McVeay, and the 515 announcer extraordinaire, Steve King to preview the athletes competing in this year's race. It is a smaller field with just 3 women and 19 men, but some great athletes will be vying to set the official race records in their respective age groups and overall, as last year's race (the inaugural) had to cancel the swim due to poor water conditions.Join us as we discuss the resumes of these Ultra athletes so you know who to follow through the race socials for updates.Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/ultramanarizona/Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/UltramanArizonaAlso, as part of a double episode release this week, I have S4E5 also dropping simultaneously. Today's Ohana guest, Manmadh Rebba, is a multiple finisher of 515 races and ultramarathons. His ultra journey has taken him from a company 5k to completing the Moab 240. In his day job he works as an architect and project management consultant, and he uses that as a metaphor for his new endurance coaching platform - Re-Design Me. He wants to help athletes, especially Indian athletes, to find the path to live Aloha, Ohana, and Kokua while living a sustainable lifestyle. We speak about a number of topics including his volunteer work with Big Brothers and tutoring homeless youths for which he received a Presidential Volunteer Service Award in 2016 from president Barack Obama.Contact Info for Manmadh:Website: www.manmadh.comInstagram: www.instagram.com/manmadhrebbaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltraManJourney/Resources mentioned in this episode:Manmadh's Facebook Post about Immigration Story (Nov 21, 2022)School on WheelsBig BrothersUltraman Florida Ultraman World ChampionshipsMoab 240Keys 100 Canyons 100kBarkley Fall ClassicBarkley MarathonsUltra 520k Canadahttps://www.manmadh.com/Re-Design MeShout outs and mentions in this episode:Staci StuderArdis BowCaroline Bloom (S2E3) Marcos MoyaSidharth RoutraySheryl Cobb (S2E8)Antonina ReznikovRandy Latza Kurt Madden Shane Duffy (S4E4)Peter O'ConnorGary "Lazarus Lake" Cantrell Abhay Kelkar (S1E3)Steve Brown (S2E13)Vedant NangareMilind Soman___________________________________________________________Show Contributors:Host : Larry Ryan Contributing Raconteur : Steve KingAnnouncer : Mary Jo DionneProduction : 5Five EnterprisesMusic : Run by 331___________________________________________________________For show notes and past guests, please visit the Podcast Website: https://515theultrapodcast.buzzsprout.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/515TheUltraPodcastInsta : 515theultrapodcastEmail : 515Ultraman@gmail.com

Francesco Magisano is my Ultraman Florida athlete in profile. At ten months old Francesco was diagnosed with eye cancer and by age 16 things went completely dark with blindness for him. He found his way to sport through Achilles International, a global adaptive sports and advocacy organization serving people with disabilities. That has led to him working for Achilles as the director of the New York metro region where he also leads a Saturday run group in Central Park. He will be the first blind athlete to attempt Ultraman Florida, but the third blind athlete to compete at a 515 distance race. Raphael Jamie has previously completed UltraMX 515 and John Domandl was the first, in 2015 at Ultraman Australia.Brian Hammond, Francesco's coach, also joins the conversation to speak about his role as his guide for the race. Brian is an alumni of UMFL from 2016 and an experienced crew member who has a long ultra resume to back up his advice.Resources mentioned in this episode:Ultraman Florida Achilles International IM Arizona2020 Tokyo Paralympic Cycling Trials Trufit SolutionsTelluride Adaptive Sports ProgramThe Count of Monte Cristo (Book) by Alexandre DumasMighty Man Montauk Sprint TriathlonUSA Paratriathlon National ChampionshipsBoston Half MarathonNYC MarathonBoston MarathonMarine Core 10KDallas 50KLeadville 100SBT Grvl - Black CourseVermont 100 Shout outs and mentions in this episode:Jen McVeay (S2E8) (S2E10) (S2E11)Steve King (S1E1) (S1E2) (S1E3)Amy Jo Jenkins (S4E2) Sarah HammondAvery HammondSophia HammondThomas Chapman___________________________________________________________Show Contributors:Host : Larry Ryan Contributing Raconteur : Steve KingAnnouncer : Mary Jo DionneProduction : 5Five EnterprisesMusic : Run by 331___________________________________________________________For show notes and past guests, please visit the Podcast Website: https://515theultrapodcast.buzzsprout.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/515TheUltraPodcastInsta : 515theultrapodcastEmail : 515Ultraman@gmail.com

For the final episode of this season 515 is offering you a special double episode. This is Part B. Link to Part AMy two Ohana guests today share a number of ideas that have propelled them to the top of the podium in world events in 2022. They are both in their 50's; they both believe in doing more than just swimming, biking and running to stay in shape; and they believe the records they are setting are only there to push other women to break them.Part A My first guest, Dede Griesbauer, is currently the oldest pro triathlete on the planet at the age of 52. She smashed the 50 - 59 age group record at the Ultraman World Championship in 2022 where she topped the women's podium against, what Steve King states is, one of the toughest women's fields to face off on the big island. Dede proudly coaches in the Julie Dibbens crew and is also a broadcaster for Ironman Live when not training or racing herself. Part BThe second guest is Yvonne Timewell, amateur triathlete from Penticton, BC, who won the 2022 Ironman World Championship in the 55-59 age group. For the final episode of this season 515 is offering you a special double episode. This is Part A.Link to Part BMy two Ohana guests today share a number of ideas that have propelled them to the top of the podium in world events in 2022. They are both in their 50's; they both believe in doing more than just swimming, biking and running to stay in shape; and they believe the records they are setting are only there to push other women to break them.My first guest, Dede Griesbauer, is currently the oldest pro triathlete on the planet at the age of 52. The second guest is Yvonne Timewell, amateur triathlete from Penticton, BC, who won the 2022 Ironman World Championship in the 55-59 age group. Yvonne used the toughness she learned on day 3 of the Ultraman Canada race in 2014 to propel her to multiple podium finishes in Kona over the years. Both guests share great stories and tips that will surely entertain and help any athlete.
