He's an IRONMAN machine, holding an ITU Long Distance World Champion title, boasting numerous podium finishes at the Kona Ironman World Championships, and loads of Ironman and Ironman 70.3 victories.  He's come back from a near fatal heart attack in 2021, known as the widow maker and shown the world what sheer grit and determination really is. But beyond these accolades, he's been a great mate of mine for over 15 years. We've shared laughs, bottles of wine, and memories from some legendary parties we've thrown.  Beyond the athlete, he's a remarkable husband and father, who brings as much passion to his family life as he does to the racecourse.  It's been over a year since I've had him on the show and I thought we should check in and see what he's been up to. It's always a treat having him on.    Links Greg Bennett https://www.bennettendurance.com/ Find Greg on social media: Twitter (X)- The Greg Bennett Show Instagram- The Greg Bennett Show   Timothy O'Donnell https://www.timothyodonnell.com/ Find Timothy on social media: Twitter (X)- Timothy ODonnell Instagram- Timothy ODonnell

World Champion Triathlete, Timothy O'Donnell is one of the world's most successful and experienced American long-course triathletes. As a professional, he has earned 50+ podium finishes including over 22 wins at major events throughout the world. Along with the ITU Long Distance World Champion (2009) title, his other wins include nine Ironman 70.3 victories, two IRONMAN wins, and six Armed Forces National Championships. At the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, Timothy has finished 3rd (2015), 5th (2013), 6th (2016), 8th (2012) and earned the top American spot in 2013 & 2015. After surviving a Windowmaker Heart Attack on the bike leg of the Miami Challenge race in 2021, 15 months later, in 2022 Tim competed in IROMMAN World Championships in Kona and most recently was just in New York City at Lifetime NYC Triathlon, where he came in third place. Tim and I caught up on Monday October 2, 2023 in NYC to chat about the NYC Triathlon, what inspired him to come race, and how he is having fun with sport and exploring shorter distances, new off road events and bringing a new “Why” and perspective to his racing and training after surviving a widowmaker heart attack. We do a deep dive into the health and wellness tools keeping Tim super dialed and on the inside track of his health from the Cleerly Health CT, InsideTracker, DeltaG Ketones and more. As Heart Disease is in his DNA and we chat about the tests he was doing prior to the heart attack and the ones he did post heart attack which empowered him with the confidence to get back to training and racing . We talk about how he is embarking upon a new chapter in his career, he sheds light on his latest venture, Salty Bears coaching, which he co-founded with his wife, Rinny Carfrae And of course, we talk gear and sponsors that have empowered him for success including Insidetracker, DeltaG Ketones, AG1, Hed Wheels, Ucan, and more. I also get Tim's thoughts on the recent IRONMAN 70.3 NY  race conditions and ask about his most challenging race conditions. Not all heart attacks are fatal. But when your heart's left anterior descending artery becomes 100% blocked, the result is a massive heart attack known as The Widowmaker. Few survive its fatal clutch. But today's guest Timothy O'Donnell beat the odds. A professional long-course triathlete with over 50 podium finishes, including more than 25 wins at major events throughout the world, Tim is the 2009 ITU Long Distance World Champion, placed 2nd at the 2019 Ironman World Championships in Kona, and became the first American to finish that race in under 8 hours. Tim's impressive 20-year athletic journey (and, more importantly, his life) nearly came to a tragic end in 2021 when he suffered a widowmaker heart attack in the middle of a half-ironman race. Somehow, Timothy was able to finish the race, placing 11th and making it to the hospital in time to make a full recovery. Tim's journey is nothing short of astonishing. Today he opens up about the strange dichotomy between his elite fitness and near-death experience, his decision to return to racing, and the critical importance of lifestyle choices for endurance athletes of all levels. We also talk about his experience at the Naval Academy and tenure as a Naval officer, triathlon professional athlete representation in the media today, his thoughts on the Norwegian Train, the future of triathlon, advice for amateur athletes, and more. But more than that, he is the man who at the ripe age of 40 had a near-fatal heart attack on the Miami speedway race course, in March of 2021 and still finished the race in 11th.   And just over a year later he was back racing, and not only racing he is on the podiums at both Ironmans and 70.3s and has his eyes set on another Kona Ironman world championship where he has been on the podium several times. In fact, the last time he raced in 2019, the last time the race was on, he finished 2nd and went sub 8.   We discuss Tim's near-fatal Heart attack then move onto discussing his prep and predictions for Kona Ironman.   Timestamps 3:57 - Interview with Timothy O'Donnell begins I was probably about two-thirds through the bike…when it basically happened ... 11:31 - The Heart Attack - What Happened in Challenge Miami - 80% block in his Led "called the widow maker" - Pain in the chest and lockjaw - Leaving the party - Just suffering - Tim wasn't aware of how bad it was - There was one point that Tim, thought it was is this the point of dying? "What are the other aspects of my life where I can really try to make these small… And it's marginal gains, right, these little fractions of a percent. But they add up. Our conversation with Tim will leave you in awe. Not just because he has accomplished so much as a pro triathlete, but maybe even more so for what he has learned along the way to the top of his sport. There are a lot of lessons throughout this conversation with Tim. Today's episode we got to chat with Mel Hauschildt! So I’m excited to be connecting with Mel today because not only is she another SCODY advocate like myself, but she also probably has the biggest list of accolades in Triathlon that quite frankly I’ve ever seen! Now I’ve never been one to list everything out; but to highlight a few of her stats here; she was a 2x IM 70.3 World Champion, ITU Long Distance World Champion, she’s a 30x IM 70.3 Champion (Yes.. 30 as in 3 0), she has 23 course records and the most sub 4:10 IM 70.3’s held by any female, and honestly the list goes on. Now Melissa actually owned the IRONMAN World Record by a female with a 8:31:05 win at the IM North American Championships in April 2018!! In today's episode we go over details on her most recent accident and how she's been coping with the injuries. We also pick her brain on what are the best races out there for an age grouper to add to their bucket list, and we talk a ton about training tips for age groupers! This is definitely a Podcast that requires your full attention because there's just so much great info! Thanks Mel!

“It’s really all about self-improvement. And not just in terms of your finish time. More about what you learned about yourself and how you solved problems.” - Tim O’Donnell (click to tweet)   To reach the highest level, you have to give 100% of yourself. While this undeniable truth might seem like common sense, we often forget that it is a requirement. If our minds are not convinced of this fact, we will create excuses to justify why we aren’t achieving our potential. Professional or extra-curricular, we must commit to a daily practice that forces us to max out on our abilities. That’s why on today’s episode of the Life Uncharted Podcast, we are joined by Tim O’Donnell.  Timothy O’Donnell is one of the world’s most successful and experienced American long-course triathletes. As a professional, he has earned 50+ podium finishes including over 22 wins at major events throughout the world. Along with the ITU Long Distance World Champion (2009) title, his other wins include nine Ironman 70.3 victories, two IRONMAN wins, and six Armed Forces National Championships. Listen to this episode to hear us uncover the secrets behind such extreme athletics, and what’s required to perform at the highest level of anything. “Nerves are good. You have to be able to control them properly.” - Tim O’Donnell (click to tweet) Points to Keep In Mind Use your critical-thinking skills to problem-solve in racing environmentsKeep yourself together while in the dark places of extreme exerciseWhile racing, make it a goal not to get dropped by the competitionIf you can hold your form together, you can usually hold your paceTeam sports leave more room for rationalization than solo sports You can follow Tim O’Donnell: Personal Website Instagram Twitter   Learn more about your ad choices. Our interview this week is with Tim O'Donnell.  We have a lot of questions for T.O. about how the prep for Kona is going this year, what it's like balancing the roles of a professional triathlete, husband and relatively new father, we'll talk about the Tim and Rinny You Tube Channel is going, and how his and Rinny's races have gone this year. Thanks to last week's guests, Simone Cordrey-Cotter to talk about Rudy Project's "Podium One" and Alison Freeman of D3 Multisport who talked about how to train for and race in hot conditions.  If you missed it, go back and listen to episode #134.  Hopefully you are fast enough to win a Boost 01 helmet, but if you're not get a Boost 01 like me and you'll be faster.  Being fast on the bike might not be enough in hot conditions.  We had lots of great tips on how to be ready for your next hot race. Announcement: Last Friday was Bill's birthday and we did not give him a birthday shout out.  Bill, this is your belated birthday shout out!  Not that you care because you are having a blast in Canada Salmon fishing! Last week we gave a shout out to Kim Miller.  There is no "Kim" Miller.  There is however an "Amy" Miller.  I have no good explanation for how that happened.  It was in the show notes incorrectly despite having previously connected with Amy on Facebook and Instagram.  She sent me a very nice message last Monday bringing the error to my attention and immediately I had a flashback to the thought occurring to me on Saturday night.  It's funny how the subconscious knew there was something wrong when it hadn't occurred to me consciously.      Interview:  Timothy O’Donnell is one of the world’s most successful and experienced American long-course triathletes. As a professional, he has earned 50+ podium finishes including over 22 wins at major events throughout the world. Among the wins are nine Ironman 70.3 victories, three 140.6 wins, and six Armed Forces National Championships. At the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, Timothy finished 6th in 2016, 3rd in 2015, and 5th in 2013, finishing as top American in 2013 & 2015. In 2013, he tied the existing American IRONMAN record with an 8:01:32 victory at IRONMAN Brazil. In 2015 at IRONMAN Brazil, he completed his fastest IRONMAN to date at 7:55:56. He was the IRONMAN 70.3 US Pro Champion in 2012 and the IRONMAN US Pro Champion in 2011.   O’Donnell’s sporting career began when he joined his first swim team at the age of five in Roseville, CA. He began to shine in the pool during his high school years while attending Wyoming Seminary Prep (SEM) in Kingston, Pennsylvania. At SEM O’Donnell was captain of the varsity swim team, set multiple school records and earned repeated district championships and all-state honors. O’Donnell then attended the United States Naval Academy (BS Naval Architecture, 2003) where he swam on the Varsity team for two seasons before fully committing to the sport of triathlon. As a triathlete, O’Donnell led the Naval Academy Men’s Team to two US National Triathlon Championship titles. He attended UC Berkeley (MSEng Ocean Engineering, 2005) as a Navy Ensign during which time he won the 2003 U.S. Under-23 National Championships and his first of six consecutive Armed Forces Triathlon Championships. In 2007 O’Donnell was assigned to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He earned spots on the US National Team and World Championships Team in 2007 and 2008,was the ITU Long Distance World Champion in 2009, and was named USAT’s Non-Drafting Triathlete of the Year in 2009, 2010, and 2015.
