If you're not familiar with Long Course Weekend (LCW), it's a unique take on a full-distance triathlon—spread over 2.5 days. The concept is simple: •Swim 3.8K on Friday night •Ride 180K on Saturday •Finish with a full marathon on Sunday The original event took place in Tenby, Wales, following a course similar to the Ironman—though, fun fact, LCW actually came first! Since then, it has expanded to Belgium, Holland, Mallorca, and, most recently, Yorkshire. There's now a range of distances available, so if the full distance feels daunting, there's likely an option to suit you. As Matt explains in our chat, LCW isn't just about elite athletes (though plenty do show up to race). Instead, it's designed for people who are fit, fat, and fun—his words! So, if that sounds like you, LCW could be your next big challenge. In this episode, we discuss: ✅ How the LCW concept was born ✅ Creating an inclusive, festival-style event ✅ Building community support and engagement ✅ Why LCW has a Festival of Champions—not a world championship To keep up to date with Long Course Weekend events use the following links Activity Wales Website - Activity Wales Facebook - activitywalesevents Instagram - activitywalesevents Long Course Weekend Website - LongCourse Weekend Facebook - LongCourseWeekend Instagram - LongCourseWeekend YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@longcourseweekendglobal Cool Videos Watch highlights of: 2024 Long Course Weekend Wales 2024 Long Course Weekend Belgium Join our SWAT/High Performance Human tribe using this link, with a happiness guarantee! Boy, oh boy, we women can really struggle to find good medical care–especially when we hit the menopause transition. And this week's guest Erin Ferguson has experienced that firsthand. Erin went through multiple gynecological complications, surgeries, and hormonally-driven symptoms, including panic attacks, anxiety, weight gain, painful periods, severely disrupted sleep, hot flashes, night sweats, and complete lack of mojo for months (and for some symptoms, years) before finally finding a doctor who helped her with hormone therapy. Her message for every woman: If you know something is wrong with you, don't stop looking for help until you find it. Keep searching for help, because there is someone who will help you.Erin Ferguson is a competitive triathlete, who despite suffering through spells of really awful symptoms and some truly terrible medical care, has managed to succeed in her sport with multiple age group podiums and overall wins and has represented Team USA as a competitor six times in Long Course World Championships. Most recently she has earned a slot to compete in The World Triathlon Multisport World Championships, Long Course in Townsville, North Queensland, Australia this August. Welcome to episode 75 of the Eat for Endurance podcast, featuring fellow Sports Dietitian Stevie Smith (MS RD CSSD). Today we're discussing performance nutrition for triathlon, specifically for the 70.3 and 140.6 distances. Stevie is not only an experienced dietitian, but she has also finished ten full ironman distance triathlons and numerous 70.3 races, so I knew she would be a great RD to cover this topic with me. Many of the sports nutrition principles that we discuss for long distance running, cycling, or other endurance sports like triathlon are the same. We aim for a certain number of grams of carbs per hour, we have to replace sweat losses with water and electrolytes, train the gut, eat adequately day to day, and so much more. But we DO need to change our specific nutrition strategies from sport to sport, and this episode addresses the nutrition challenges that are unique to long-course triathlon. I realize this episode is coming out right as the tri season is wrapping up and with Kona in a couple days, but hopefully you find it useful and have some things to think about for your training next year. She's gone from a PB of 1:59 to 1:58.4 (then 1:58.0 that night) in April at the Westmont Pro Swim to 1:57.0 just a couple weeks ago at the Indy Cup. Peplowski breaks down her relationship with long course and what's made the difference these past few months.
Eric and Ryan recap a big weekend of professional racing before turning their focus on long course and the "Big 3" out there: IRONMAN, Challenge, and the PTO. But it's not just all about professional triathlon -- it's also about what the average age-grouper experience looks like.

Welcome to episode 113 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! In this special episode, we are sharing our course preview for Swimrun Lake James. This race has been on our bucket list for a while and we are super stoked to be racing it this year. We are joined in the episode by race director Kristen Jeno, Purple Patch coach/race director John Stevens, and Mr. Swimrun himself Marcus Barton. So get your notepads out and enjoy listening to our breakdown of this super fun race.Deep in the Heart of North CarolinaSwimrun Lake James takes place at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains at Lake James State Park in North Carolina and offers long and short course race distances that are full of rolling terrain and beautiful/chilly lake waters.Getting to Lake James is pretty straight forward with several airports in the general area including Charlotte and Asheville. The race begins and ends at Fonta Flora Whippoorwill Farm just outside of the park entrance. Don't let the name fool you, the race begins and ends at a local brewery called, Fonta Flora. Course Overview(s)The Long Course clocks in at about 4 miles of swimming and 15 miles of running. The course will have 14 run sections and 13 swim sections. The swim sections range from 20yds to 1600yds in a unique and picturesque lake setting. The run sections range from 25 meters to 7.5 miles. The Short Course is about 2.7 miles of swimming and 10 miles of running. The course will have 8 run sections and 7 swim sections. The swim sections range from 20yds to 1300yds in a unique and picturesque lake setting. The run sections range from 25 meters to 5.5 miles. The runs are made up of fire service trail roads, single track trails, paved roads, and off the beaten path wooded sections. The swims are in a lake and there could be some chop if it's windy out. Water temps range from the mid 50s-low 60s fahrenheit. We asked race director Kristen Jeno for a course walkthrough when we interviewed her back in episode 65 of the show and it was so good that we are sharing that again for everyone to listen to. We also have an annotated leg-by-leg breakdown that folks can reference as they listen.Note that Kristen is walking everyone through the Long Course but the Short Course pretty much follows the same route until the end of the long run Leg 5 and then head's back to the start line from there.Leg-by-leg BreakdownLong CourseRun 1: Whippoorwill Farm - OV Trail (.97 miles)This section turns into a single track pretty quickly from the start to be towards the front if you don't want to get stuck in the bottleneckSwim 1: (800yds)A big swim right out of the gateRun 2: Paddy's Creek Trail (.30 miles)Swim 2: (50yds)Run 3: Paddy's Creek Trail - Beach area (.08 miles)Super short run so better to not do a full transition, maybe just get the pull buoy out the way and run to Swim 3 with the rest of your kit onSwim 3: (700yds)Run 4: OV Trail - Unmarked Service Road (.55 miles)Swim 4: (300yds)Run 5: Paddy's Creek Trail - Homestead Trail - Lower Tindo Loop Trail - Unmarked Service Road (7.70 miles)This is the longest run leg of the day by farTeams should have a nutrition plan and pacing strategy dialed in The aid station on this leg is the first time cutoff. Teams need to reach the Homestead Trail intersection aid station by 10:00amThe second time cutoff is at 11:30am at the end of this run.Short course heads back to the finish line from hereSwim 5: (1,600yds)This is the longest swim of the dayLook for the strobe light signaling where the swim exit isCan get choppy if there's windRun 6: Long Island (.08 miles)Swim 6: (450yds)Run 7: Middle Island (.05 miles)Swim 7: (350yds)Run 8: BBQ Island (.05 miles)Swim 8: (50yds)Run 9: Long Arm Campsite #3 - Long Arm Campsite #2 (.42 miles)Swim 9: (125yds)Run 10: Unmarked Trail (.05 miles)Swim 10: (175yds)Run 11: Unmarked Trail - Unmarked Service Road - Long Arm Campsite #1 (1.30 miles)The third and final time cutoff is at 1:30pm at the end of the runSwim 11: (1,300yds)This is the last long swim of the dayRun 12: Half Mile Island (.45 miles)Swim 12: (200yds)Run 13: Unmarked Trail (.05 miles)Swim 13: (100yds)Last swim of the day!Run 14: Park Service Boat Ramp - Whippoorwill Farm (2.35 miles)Last run of the day! It's an incline until the last mile so be ready for thatTraining for Swimrun Lake JamesAs with any Swimrun, every course is different and requires athletes to prepare as best as they can for the demands that the course will present them. We asked our friend, endurance coach and stud Swimrunner, John Stevens to share with us how he would approach training for this race and what workouts he would recommend to prepare for the unique challenges that the race presents.Deck ups!!!! You heard it here folks. John dropped a lot of knowledge about the importance of getting ready for all the swimming, quick transitions, and dealing with the terrain on the runs. Race TipsFor race strategy and tips we couldn't think of a better person to ask than the Swimrunner that has raced every single Swimrun Lake James event. Of course, we are talking about the one and only Marcus Barton. He points to being ready for the cold water and to check to make sure that you have your wetsuit zipped up before you get into the water.SummaryThis race is going to be dope! Lots of island to island Swimrunning in the European style will make for a ton of fun. If you want more background on the race, check out Episode 65 with the Swimrun Lake James race director Kirsten Jeno and Episode 69 for a Swimrun Lake James race recap with The Zaddy Daddies, A.K.A., Marcus Barton and Lee Greene. Welcome to episode 109 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast!Welcome to the second annual “Partners Month!” For the entire month of February we will be sharing conversations with Swimrun teams from all over the “world” (Europe and the U.S.) to highlight one of our favorite features of the sport of Swimrun…the partner part. Our first conversation this month is with the wife and husband duo, Chrissy and Bill Lankford, a.k.a., Team Mr. and Mrs. B. This happily married couple have raced a ton of Swimruns including what we think is the holy/unholy trinity of super hard events, ÖTILLÖ Engadin, Rockman, and ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship. We are super stoked to share our chat with all of you.But first... Training UpdateWhelp, we're still training…but for Swimrun Lake James. Most folks have already heard that ÖTILLÖ Catalina has been postponed (more on this in This Week in Swimrun later in the show.) While it is a bummer for sure we still have potentially six races on the 2022 schedule so the show must go on. We're not sure how our training will be changing now that we don't have to optimize for Leg 3 of the Catalina course but hills always pay the bills so we'll probably keep running those for the foreseeable future.ShoutoutsThis week we're shouting out @the_radberg. He's an artist out of North Carolina and drew up a cool Creature of Endurance design in honor of Swimrun that he is going to let us use as our 100k download sticker. (We should be hitting that milestone in a few months.) Super rad of you…Radberg! He's also signed up for Swimrun Lake James which that too is rad.Feats of EnduranceThis week's winner is Bay Area local, Clayton Cook. He threw down a spicy 30k trail run in the Marin Headlands over the weekend and we don't know if it was the beautiful weather or the 3,773ft of climbing that gave us FOMO. At any rate, strong work Clayton!Sign up for our Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for Swimruns and stuff. This Week in SwimrunWelcome back to the LTBz news desk.We are kicking off this week's update with a bummer…to get it out of the way. Last Friday, ÖTILLÖ announced that they are postponing their Catalina event citing ongoing concerns related to COVID-19. We know that there were a lot of people that were super stoked to be either racing for the first time…or the second time but we applaud Michael, Mats and the rest of the ÖTILLÖ crew for making the tough decision and prioritizing the health and safety of all the participants, volunteers, and spectators. You can read the press release here.Today is “Swimrun-mas!” By the time of this podcast's release, ÖTILLÖ will have announced the results of the 2022 World Championship ranking application. As we record this on a Monday, we still think that we have a decent chance of qualifying but regardless of our fate, congrats to all the teams that qualified! We will be posting memes all day long to both celebrate and commiserate with our fellow teams so make sure to check out our feed. One final bit of ÖTILLÖ news to report. They have opened registration for most of their 2022 events starting with first event of the year (one final *sad face* for Catalina) ÖTILLÖ Utö taking place on May 21 at the cradle of Swimrun in the Stockholm Archipelago. In other news, Swimrun Lake James is super close to selling out with only 6 team entries remaining for the Long Course. The race takes place on Saturday April 23rd and we hope to see you at the startline.Staying in the U.S.,TBF Racing in California has opened registration for their Folsom Swimrun. As far as we can tell, TBF primarily puts on triathlons and this is their first foray into Swimrun. The event is taking place on July 23rd in Folsom California which basically means that it will be a crazy hot race and they are offering two distance options: a 3.5 mile short course and a 7.8 mile “long” course. Not to sound like Mr. Swimrun or anything, but those courses look very easy and probably a great event for beginners. Experienced teams might want to try to do two loops of the whole course, if allowed. Finally, while ÖTILLÖ Catalina is postponed, it looks like there will still be a Swimrun extravaganza in Two Harbors at the end of March. Intrepid Swimrunners from Wild Swimrun, Envol Coaching, California Swimrun, and the Löw Tide Böyz are still planning to go out to Catalina and engage in a weekend of Swimrunning. More details are forthcoming so stay tuned for more updates. That is it for this week. Feel free to reach out and let us know if there's anything that you'd like for us to mention on the show.UpdatesIt's Chinese New Year! We hope that everyone who celebrates the holiday is getting red envelopes with crispy money and/or shiny coins and munching on moon cakes.Make sure to check out our LTBz Swag shop to get some headwear, apparel, stickers, or all three to show off your Low Tide pride.Team Mr. and Mrs. B (Bill and Chrissy Lankford)This is a conversation that we've been wanting to have for a long time! Bill and Chrissy have been huge supporters of ours since we started the show and it was great to finally chat with them about their Swimrun journey and their life and Swimrun partnership. We chatted about all kinds of stuff in this episode and it's safe to say, if we ever find ourselves at the same race, there will be fights over who will be buying the post-race pints. We loved everything about this conversation and think that you will too. Enjoy! That's it for this week's show. Lesson Learned: Look twice, any doubt pour water over your back to mask the splash, keep cool and wash yourself at the same time Lesson Learned - Don't stop on the uphill, where the shoulder is gravel and narrow. Bike/Training: Riding up Deer Creek Canyon I decided to stop on the uphill to wait for a training partner and chose a spot without a paved shoulder and slowed to a stop as I pulled onto the gravel shoulder, the gravel gave away and I rolled down the hill scraping up. Pre/Race: Boulder 70.3 2018 walking to the transition area the morning of the race, it occurs to me that I did not pack my goggles. The USA Triathlon Hall Fame serves to recognize, honor and commemorate those individuals and groups who have demonstrated excellence in every aspect of multisport — thereby inspiring others to elevate their own performance, participation and community involvement. Founded in 2008, it has recognized the best performances and contributions in the sport's nearly 50-year history. This year's class brings the total number of inductees to 47. “We are so excited to add these iconic athletes to the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame,” said Steve Sutherland, Chair of the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame Executive Committee. “Gwen's incredible rise to becoming an Olympic gold medalist is a story for the ages, Laura twice represented the U.S. at the Olympics and has given back to the multisport community following her professional career and Lesley and Robert's age group performances throughout their long triathlon careers show us multisport is truly a lifelong sport. On top of their individual accomplishments, each of our inductees impart a love and passion for triathlon that continues to greatly influence the triathlon community.” The four inductees will be honored at a premier gala hosted by the USA Triathlon Foundation on Thursday, Aug. 4 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in conjunction with the 2022 Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships Aug. 6-7. What's New in the 303: Wholesome Sweeteners and Why it Supports Boulder Roubaix and Cycling Recently the Boulder Roubaix announced its title sponsor, the Wholesome Masters Racing Team. In its 30th edition the Boulder Roubiax is a classic race in the backroads of Boulder County. It's held every other year and according to race director Chris Grealish, “having Wholesome Sweetners AND the masters club involved has taken a lot of pressure off trying to get the race paid for as well as securing knowledgeable volunteers! Our bill with the Boulder County Sheriff's Department for traffic control is north of $8,000 paid in advance. That's just one cost. When asked what is new this year, Chris said, “we've added a lap to both the pro 1-2 and Collegiate cat A groups so they do almost 100 miles in the 5 laps”. He added when asked about every other year format, “We only hold the race every other year in an attempt to preserve the fragile relationship with the 500 homeowners along the racecourse”. We then caught up with President and founder of Wholesome Sweeteners and of Wholesome Masters Racing Team, Nigel Willerton to ask as few questions about sponsoring this event and cycling in general. Just past Bennett, CO I look around and think I'm by myself, I pee on the bike and hear a female voice "did you just pee on me?" Lesson Learned: Look twice, any doubt pour water over your back to mask the splash, keep cool and wash yourself at the same time Lesson Learned - Don't stop on the uphill, where the shoulder is gravel and narrow. Have a detailed checklist, never skip the checklist, only check things off that actually go into the tri bag, then put the bag in the car the night before the race. Pre/Race: Boulder 70.3 2018 walking to the transition area the morning of the race, it occurs to me that I did not pack my goggles. Lesson learned - if you're going to cool yourself during a race, there are better ways than pouring water carelessly on your head and having it go into your shoes. Sunscreen, ice under the cap, ice down the suit, ice in the hand, Run/Race: 5430 Long Course, it was my 2nd half Iron distance race. I had poured water over my head at the aid stations and water had found it's way into my shoes and they were squeaking with every step. Traffic cone at the front of the garage that I pull out when I back out of the garage Eventually removed the top rack Bike/Training: Driving into the driveway with the bike on the roof; twice Spare pair of jammers in my glove box Swim/Training: Driving to the pool without and forgot my swimsuit. Sometimes I don't figure it out until I'm in the locker room. Then it's a drive back to the house or skip the workout. On today's episode, of #WhiteboardWednesday we are taking a deep dive into How to Train for a Long Course competition or open water race in a Short Course pool!
Have you ever wondered why short course (25m) swimming is so much faster than racing in a long course (50m) pool? See why short course is faster than long course! The Olympic sized swimming pool is gold standard in international competition. Times recorded in a Long Course (50 meters) pool are considered the most respectable in the swimming community. When you look at the best swimmers in the world, their times in Short Course (25 meters or 25 yards) are significantly faster.
Today we resume our discussion of neoadjuvant therapy for rectal cancer. In this episode we welcome on special guests, Dr. Matt Silviera, Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery and Dr. Paragh Parikh, Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology, both at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine.
Coach Rich's experience as an Ironman athlete, coach, and riding motorcycle support on race day has shown him that rules violations are often the result of ignorance rather than criminal intent. In this podcast, Rich does his part to educate long course triathletes about the rules of the sport. www.endurancenation.us
After years of reviewing results and the feedback of our athletes, customers, and comparing both with our own training and racing experience, we have come to the conclusion that brick workouts become less valuable as the distance of your goal race increases. In other words, they are more relevant to sprint triathlon training than your next Ironman. Endurance Nation Triathlon CoachingCreate a FREE 5-day trial membership.
