In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek and brought to you by Topo Athletic, we're joined by Ben Vaugh, known on trail as Ginger Ballz. Ben is a Navy veteran, accomplished thru-hiker, and currently works as a dog musher, a topic Chaunce and Badger had way too much fun diving into. Ginger Ballz takes us through his transition from the military to thru-hiking, why he recommends it to fellow service members, and the parallels between the two. He shares stories from his hikes of the Triple Crown trails, the Hayduke, Superior Hiking Trail, and Long Trail. We also get a deep dive into his current gig managing a dog mushing and guiding company in Colorado, working with Iditarod-winning pups. He breaks down the process of training huskies for guiding, the biggest challenges of mushing, and the unique bond he shares with his dogs. We close out the show with a feature on a man who thru-hiked the AT while legally blind, a debate on whether airplanes have keys, why Zach is no longer allowed to enjoy pho, Chaunce's honey grease, the Triple Crown of abbreviated insults, and more. The midstance phase of a running stride is a crucial element of running form, but many runners are ignoring it. If you have weaknesses, imbalances, or poor movement patterns, this is the part of the gait cycle that will show it. Chris Johnson, DPT is a Seattle-based physical therapist, performance coach, entrepreneur, and multiple time Kona IRONMAN qualifier who shares how midstance affects your running performance and how you can improve it. In this episode, Chris and I talk about: Midstance importance in running mechanics and injury prevention The impact midstance has on muscles and running form Common problems in midstance technique from knees to hips The gluteus medius muscle, a common problem area for runners Training the gluteus maximus and hip abductors for running mechanics How to train the midstance for stronger running Single leg exercises for runners with injuries “Movement snacks” for runners: simple movements throughout the day to help runners improve midstance This is an excellent episode for any runner who's considering how their running form plays into their performance, even beyond midstance mechanics. Thank you MOBO Board Invented by renowned physical therapist Jay Dicharry, MOBO helps you stabilize your stance with an innovative rocker board that's set up on two fins. The design effectively forces you to drive your big toe into the board to improve your stability. I was pretty arrogant going into my first session on the MOBO Board. How hard can it be to balance, right? Well, I was humbled pretty quickly! Even if you're a good runner, better balance, stability, and proprioception is going to help you have a more powerful stride and prevent more running injuries. You'll learn how to improve the efficiency of the kinetic chain from your hip to your big toe. Because as Jay likes to say, it's not just how strong you are, but how well you use that strength. I was recently at a weekend physical therapy workshop (lol I was the only running coach) and learned how important (and rare) this simple movement is. Since 2002 I haven't missed many Ironman World Championship events. Being on the Big Island during race week is a magical time Having missed a couple since Covid I realise how lucky I've been to be able to travel each October. I also met my wife Beth on the finish line while volunteering so now it has a special place in our hearts. 2023 is one of those years I missed and I'm especially sad about that because the racing was exceptional at both Nice and Kona. The IRONMAN World Championships have been held in Kona, Hawaii since 1978. Covid forced a change of location to St George for the 2021 race (which had to be held in May 2022), and then in 2022 World Triathlon Corporation experimented with two races on different days. For whatever reason, more changes happened in 2023 so this year we had the mens-only race in Nice in September and then on the usual second Saturday in October we had the female-only race in Kona. Our favourite triathlon journalist Tim Heming was lucky enough to go to both events and he joins me today to discuss his thoughts on: Tim's top 10 predictions versus the final results the concept of splitting not just race days but also venues atmosphere in both locations leading up to, and on, race day overall quality of racing not just for the pro athletes but age groupers as well (this is especially poignant given the negative publicity that WTC were receiving before the Kona event) does the split venue format have enough support and momentum to continue after 2025? John was a professional rugby player and aspiring triathlete during the off-season when an eight-ton truck hit him as he trained on his bike. Medical experts set his chances at “pine or mahogany” and told the family not to expect him to make it through the day. John made it through that day. When he emerged from the coma, he asked about his bike, which had lost significance since he'd now use a wheelchair. Months of treatment and therapy eventually brought him to rebuilding his former self. As he lifted weights with his mate, his father asked, “How far can you go?” Far went well beyond pine box or mahogany. In over twelve hours of swimming, cycling, and wheelchair racing, John became the first paraplegic to meet all the cut-off times as an official finisher of the Kona Ironman. Then he swam the English Channel, the world's busiest shipping lane, in twelve hours and fifty-five minutes. Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, a Paralympic Medal, and learning to walk again well enough to finish the original triathlon for which he was training when the truck met his bike. And there's another challenge on the horizon.

In 2008, Bonner Paddock summited Mount Kilimanjaro, the world's tallest freestanding mountain. Four years later, he earned the elite triathlete title, Kona Ironman. Thousands have done each individually. Bonner is the first person with cerebral palsy to do both. When Bonner was born, his umbilical cord had coiled twice around his neck, depriving him of oxygen, causing parts of his brain to die. That cord didn't take his life, but it changed it forever. Diagnosed in his youth, Bonner swore he wouldn't let this neurological disorder limit him, and for twenty-nine years he guarded the truth about his health. But the sudden death of a friend's young son who also suffered from CP forced Bonner to re-evaluate his life. No longer would he be content striving for normal. Instead, he would live life to its fullest, pursuing one breathtaking experience at a time—while raising money for special needs children along the way—and never turn down a challenge for fear of his physical limitations. His monumental climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro was documented in the film Beyond Limits and helped raise money for the construction of a new childcare center in Orange County, providing early treatment for children with all types of physical disabilities. Bonner took his vision global and has been building more centers around the world to help children live better lives. When he completed the Kona Ironman… which is 140 miles of racing…. in 16 1/2 hours, he raised over $560,000 for special needs children. His is a remarkable journey that has taken him across the globe and introduced him to a fascinating cast of characters who have supported his inspiring quest. An athlete, adventurer, and philanthropist, he is no longer defined by his limits, but by the moments that pushed him past them. Bonner's book, One More Step, shows us that we can all conquer our own challenges and embrace every moment life has to offer. What you'll learn in this episode: The importance of finding the courage to move forward Retrospecting life at every turn Prioritizing your energy and time for people you value How to continually challenge yourself toward improvement The importance of seeking what your heart really wants How life teaches you to face your fears Additional Resources: Get Bonner's Book: https://projectpossible.org/one-more-step Learn more about Project Possible on: Website: https://projectpossible.org/ Facebook: Project Possible Org Instagram: @projectpossibleorg Connect with Bonner Paddock on: Bonner's LinkedIn Bonner's Facebook Bonner's Instagram

Discipline. Consistency. And Emptying the Tank. Three things that today's guest, Troy Castle, lives by in all things he does: being a Messenger in his Faith, being an incredible husband to his wife, and being an exceptional father to his newborn son, Cooper. After prioritizing his Faith and family, he is a dedicated triathlete, having just completed the world-renowned, Kona Ironman, along with placing 3rd at Ironman Chattanooga, and countless Ironman, marathons, and endurance competitions over the years. You will learn what it takes to succeed in life and training, how Troy balances time between his family and Ironman, and his recent reflections on what triathlon has taught him over the last 6+ years of dedication. (Sneak peak into reflections: consistency is key, discipline and hard work outweigh talent, and your family, friends, and loved ones are most important). You will learn how Troy uses a moral compass to make decisions, and the importance of communication with your significant other (or other persons in general) to work towards your goals and dreams, together. I hope you enjoy this episode as I much as I did having Troy on the show. Troy is a man of honor, integrity, and has such a bright outlook on life, I know you will leave feeling inspired to go work towards your dreams. Troy's Ironman Reflections Recap (in his words, see more here): 1. You can't go at it alone. Your family and friends want to be part of the journey; invite them in and celebrate them for walking alongside you. 2. Salt is your friend, especially on the long days. ;) 3. When you're ready to give up on something unfinished, commit to going 10 more minutes. Then another 10. Pretty soon you'll look back and see how far you've come. Finishing something you start speaks volumes to your integrity. 4. C is the most supportive & encouraging wife I could ever ask for; never take that for granted and make sure she always knows none of it would ever be possible without her. 5. There is no pursuit under the sun that will ever truly satisfy. There's only One who can do that (this one is definitely the most important). 6. Never sacrifice quality time with the family for a hobby. A workout can be made up, but the reverse is not always true. 7. Humility, discipline, work ethic & consistency will take you much farther than talent. 8. Self-worth is not based on performance, race results or praise from others; your worth has already been paid for. 9. Having a plan is important but getting started is more important. You'll learn the most through taking action. 10. Kona is a brutal & special race at the same time and will make you dig deeper than you have ever gone. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to by RTIC, we are joined by Lauren Capone. In addition to being an accomplished triathlete and runner herself, Lauren holds a Master of Science in Applied Nutrition and works as a Functional and Integrative Health Practitioner at Flatirons Integrative Health & Nutrition in Boulder, CO. Our conversation covers a ton of ground on all things nutrition and health for backpacking and beyond, including why people end up gaining the weight they lose on a backpacking trip so quickly post-trail (and what can be done to prevent that), the metabolic effects of long distance endurance exercise, how to know if you're getting the right amount of calories during your hike, her thoughts on eating keto, vegan, or paleo on trail, what supplements a backpacker should consider using, how to stay properly hydrated on trail, and much more. Simply put, you will walk away from this interview with a ton of useful information. Get the notepad ready. RTIC Outdoors: Use code “backpacker” for 10% off orders over $50 at rticoutdoors.com. In today's episode I have a conversation with two of the greatest athletes in the world ... and honestly, two of the best men I know. One of them dominated the world of 70.3 and Ironman with 3 Kona Ironman and two 70.3 world titles and arguably the greatest career in the middle distance Triathlon, with more wins at that distance than anyone else. Add to that his impressive short course wins at Minneapolis, Chicago and many others and you can see why I hold him in such awe. The other has one of the greatest Olympic careers we're ever seen. Four Olympics, a Gold medal at the first ever Olympic Triathlon and Silver medal 8 years later. Known for his powerful sprint he also took the biggest prize money wins at the Hyvee and Life Time Minneapolis. Personally, I watched from the very beginning as both of them started their careers as young men. Neither of them were remarkable to start but they chipped away to become icons of the sport that we all love. I've spent thousands of hours training with them both. We've crashed, and we've had podiums on the world stage ... we've shared the highs and lows of sport and life together. They've both been on the show separately, but this is a first for the three of us. Simon recalls a spectacular crash in Geelong where Greg tried to (at the last minute) bunny-hop his bike over his fallen mate. Only to slice him open with his bike chain. 19:31 - In reflection how do three young men look back on their early triathlon careers ... some wonderful stories and memories. 23:40 - A lesson in how to speak 'athlete'. 24:27 - A subtle plug for our show sponsor - https://anyquestion.com/crowiealexander 26:26 - To an elite athlete ... there is no 'Plan B'. You are 'all-in'. The lads describe what this means in each of their eyes. Fascinating!!! 30:23 - The guys talk about some of the toughest times in their careers. Inspiring!!! 40:26 - After going through everything that you've been through, what would you tell your 17 year old self? 46:31 - The lads discuss how Triathlon has progressed, grown and become the elite sport it is today. 54:13 - So who is the GOAT? 01:00:23 - Some rapid fire questions (and answers) to wrap up this amazing conversation between 3 incredibly talented athletes. Kona is known as the pinnacle of Ironman triathlon. Anyone who rides the Ironman bus and even those who are quite happy with their sprint distances triathlons know what Kona stands for as well as the dedication, passion and blood sweat and tears that people put into reaching the event on the remote island of Hawaii. But why? What is the fascination? Is this the ultimate test or is it the ultimate marketing ploy? Those questions may never be answered. Everyone will have their own point of view. This week we chat to our own Tom Walker who tells us all about what Kona meant to him through his triathlon joinery, how he qualified for the world championships and what happens now. This is about way more than just triathlon! Sit tight!Toms Article on Kona here
Mike Thompson could have listened to the doctors. At the age of 15, after five years of battling four rounds of cancer, when they told him he wouldn't make it past age 18. Or when they told him that he would never be able to do athletic activites ever again. But he didn't. Now in his mid-30's, Mike has completed multiple marathons and Ironmans, including the Kona Ironman, and has summited Mount Kilimanjaro. He has now devoted his life to helping others who struggle with cancer, PTSD, and more by partnering with Texas Original, one of the two operating medical cannabis providers in Texas. In this episode, Mike sits down with Nick to share his story, as well as share about his work with Texas Original, and how they hope to educate about the benefits of medicinal cannabis. · Even though health and fitness can be a bit underrated when it comes to thinking of ways to achieve wellbeing, those can be effective to bring about a strong feeling of empowerment, given that they both involve a constant pushing of our boundaries. · There are many tools for wellbeing such as physical exercising, therapy, meditation, and a healthy nutrition. It's key to find out which of them work best for you, bearing in mind that going 100% deep on just one of them may not be the ideal way to go. Instead, it may be better to seek for some sort of balance among several. · Tacking some challenging physical activities is one of the best ways towards gaining self-development and then becoming aware that you can indeed be way better than who you are today. · Visualization is perhaps the most powerful tool for goal-achievement. Setting the right mindset along with a clear intention of where you're heading will pave your way to success. · Whilst you can always learn from others, it's important to avoid comparing yourself to other people throughout your personal journey – Just think about what's the most suitable next step for you according to where you are now and where you'd like to be in the future. Smart training is essential – even though intending to go beyond your current boundaries can be a great thing to aim to, always do it in a way that doesn't compromise your mental and physical health. Mohamed Lahna was born in Casablanca, Morocco with Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency, leaving him without a femur in his right leg. As a young child, his mobility was limited by crutches or foam inserts made by a shoe cobbler. Despite his situation, Mo would seek inspiration from the world of professional sports and Olympic competition. At the age of 20, Mo was fitted with a real prosthetic. Within 5 years, he rode his first bike. Two months later, he crossed the Atlas Mountains – 1,550 miles of diverse terrain across northwestern Africa - on that same bike. He has swam across the Gibraltar, finished the Kona Ironman, and earned a bronze medal in paratriathlon at the Paralympics.
As you've already heard from me, I was in Ecuador in early- to mid-November on a trip lead by Tyler Andrews, whose many impressive FKTs landed him here on the WASP earlier this year. There were six of us on this expedition, including my travel sidekick, Jack. Our other leader was 22-year old Ecuadorian native Beto Dávalos. I ran with Beto on an early day of the trip while we were getting acclimated to Quito's 9300-foot elevation, on a beautiful 20 km-long trail that stretches from a place called Cumbaya, yes, that's its actual name, to another part of the city. Along the way, we passed farms, modest neighborhoods, mansions, and ran up and down a canyon that included a spectacular waterfall and through three tunnels that were as dark as caves. Beto also told me about his battle with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, or GBS, an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack the peripheral nervous system. You might recall a WASP episode earlier this year with Brad Kelley, who fell victim to the same disease, but who has had a remarkable recovery to complete the Kona Ironman, and recently attempted a quintuple-Ironman, yes, five Ironmans in a row. As you'll hear now, Beto has had a strong recovery and has a big challenge planned ahead on Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America. He also has now gained the perspective of a much older person for someone so young, and hopes to pass that along to others. We did have one glitch in recording this episode from his home in Ecuador. My cat Babe, who always sleeps on top of my office TV's satellite box to take advantage of the warmth coming off of it, decided to slumber on top of my soundboard late in this chat and pushed to button to stop recording. So I've had to fill in a bit of this conversation with Beto where we talked about a short film being made by a Mexican filmmaker about Beto's inspirational story. You can view an excellent teaser for it on YouTube under the title Tigrana by Pablo Norza Garay. I hope you enjoy this uplifting episode.Beto DávalosFacebook beto.davalos.1Instagram @betodavalos9YouTube film "Tigrana" by Pablo Norza GarayBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor
