A veces no tanto.
To mark the final stages of this year's Tour de Femmes, Marianne Martin talks about winning the first official women's Tour De France in 1984. She rode the 1,080km course in 29 hours, 39 minutes, and two seconds over 18 days – a remarkable feat considering she'd had anaemia earlier in that year. The 1984 men's champion Laurent Fignon won prizes valued at more than $225,000. Marianne Martin was awarded a trophy and $1,000.
The Tour de France is one of the world's great sporting events and in the minds of most cycling journalists, the best-ever race of the Tour took place in 1989 when American Greg Lemond made one of the greatest comebacks in the history of sport, with dozen of shotgun pellets in his body and carrying a terrible secret in his heart. His winning margin in the end was 8 seconds, after racing more than 3,000 kilometres. He was 50 seconds behind as the last short sprint into Paris began. Against him were two recent former champions, Laurent Fignon and Pedro Delgado. That incredible race is now the subject of a new documentary The Last Rider , out in cinemas throughout NZ. Greg LeMond won the Tour three times and the World Road Race Championships twice and he joins us from Knoxville, Tennessee.
--- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bonjourvelo/support

Come ogni epoca è diversa dall'altra.

Post interview discussion: Red Zinger / Coors Classic Didn't know anything about racing Quote at 24 minutes and 45 minutes From 1984 to 1989, the Tour de France Women was the curtain raising event for the men's event. It was organised by the Tour de France Society, organiser of the men's Tour de France. In 1990, the event changed its name and format, becoming the Tour of the EEC Women, which ran until 1993. In 1992, a new race was created, the Tour cycliste féminin, organised in August by Pierre Boué. The race lacked stable sponsorship and with the location of stages determined by locations willing to contribute, there were long transfers between stages. Until 1998, it was the Tour Cycliste Féminin, but the Société du Tour de France, organizers of the men's Tour de France, said that infringed their trademark and in 1999 the name was changed.[2] It resumed under the name Grande Boucle Féminine Internationale, but was not held in 2004 because of organisational difficulties. It returned, smaller, in 2005. The previous tours were 10 to 15 stages; later ones had five and stayed in one region. The race also received a lower classification by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), and had a reduced field. In 2008, the race was six days and seven stages. However, in 2009 the race was only four days long with only 66 riders, after a planned race start and three stages in Britain fell through, leading winner Emma Pooley to joke that the race was "more of a Petite Boucle than Grande."[3][4] The race was discontinued after 2009. France was left with no major women's stage race after the Tour de l'Aude Cycliste Féminin and the Route de France Féminine finished in 2010 and 2016 respectively. For the last few years the race turned into a 1 day event titled La Course (La Course by Le Tour de France 2021 (cyclingnews.com)). In 2022, the race is to return, with eight stages. Julian Alaphilippe wants to try and win Tour de France before retiring Julian Alaphilippe has said that he is keen to go for the overall at the Tour de France before he retires saying "I don't want to end my time with the regret of not ever trying." The two-time world champion, Alaphilippe has had yet another exceptional season with the Deceuninck - Quick-Step rider securing a second world title as well as wearing the yellow jersey at the Tour for a third year in a row. But now Alaphilippe is looking to pick and choose his goals for the upcoming seasons, including the Tour overall title. When being asked about trying to win the Tour, which he so nearly did in 2019, "Never say never," was the answer. "Why not think about it before the end of my career?" he continued. "There are a lot of questions to be asked and I'd need to speak to the team. But I don't want to end my time with the regret of not ever trying." In 2019 Alaphilippe led the race for 14 days, only losing the jersey twice, once to Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) - who took the jersey from the breakaway on stage six to the top of the Super Planche des Belles Filles before ceding it back to Alaphilippe two days later - and finally to Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) after the Colombian attacked solo on the Col de l'Iseran on stage 19. On that day the general classification times were taken at the top of the Iseran due to mudslides and extreme weather, which forced the race to be stopped before the final climb to Tignes. "I've never raced a Grand Tour thinking of winning it," Alaphilippe said, "so there wasn't the same pressure. But I can understand why it's been difficult for [Thibaut] Pinot and [Romain] Bardet," Alaphilippe said. The National Weather Service, for example, instructed hunters and outdoor recreationists to be prepared for winter conditions in the Utah mountains. This type of storm is not unusual for the month of October — and even the second half of September — in this geography, the tops of mountains. On Saturday, October 9, at 5:30 a.m., the race started off as planned in Kaysville, Utah. This town is just north of Salt Lake City in Davis County, the namesake of DC in the race name. Runners were excited for this autumn ultra, to run a rugged course that traversed the mountain range above the northern Salt Lake City suburbs, including Francis Peak and Bountiful Peak. The more prepared runners had seen the weather forecast and knew the event's high passages, and packed their running vests accordingly with jackets and gloves, some even bringing pants as a precaution. Kelly Sparks, the Davis County Sheriff, spoke about the shock it was to get a call of this magnitude. “It's pretty rare, in our part of the country, to get a call that so many people are in need of assistance. We usually deal with groups of twos and threes. We got the call at about 9:30 a.m. that there were runners out on this high altitude course that needed assistance. We sent some SAR people on foot, some on snowmobile, and some on four-wheelers. Some went from the front of the course going forward, and others went from the midpoint backtracking. We needed to ensure everyone could get off safely.” When asked about the characterization in the initial media reports of runners being lost, Sheriff Sparks stated, “I don't think anyone was lost at that time, but the [race directors] realized that it could become a real situation, with the blowing snow and visibility. We needed to get people to a warm environment as fast as possible.” The DC Peaks 50 blizzard and athlete rescue is just the tip of the iceberg of this story. You have to understand where this this story starts with Jake Kilgore as a CEO of a major motorize wheelchair company and the journey to ultra trail running. Let's talk to Jake Kilgore. The doctor's office is left with an Orbit prescription pad in order to make the referral process simple. Everyone knew it. The owners knew it, I knew it, and our internal reviewers knew it. Although this behavior was not permitted, everyone viewed these actions as not a big deal—and certainly not criminal. Kilgore, Jake. Trial Running: Learning Perseverance Through Life's Aid Stations (p. 36). Kindle Edition. Endurance News: GUSTAV IDEN POISED TO CAPTURE TITLE AS PTO WORLD NO. 1 Professional Triathletes Organisation today announced that Gustav Iden is poised to be crowned as PTO World No. 1 for 2021. In his victory in Florida over the weekend at his first long-distance race, Iden scored 107.23 PTO World Ranking Points, the second highest score for a full-distance race in 2021, just below the stellar performance of 2x World Champion Patrick Lange at Tulsa, where Lange scored 108.88 PTO World Ranking Points. Combined with Iden's 110.18 points scored at the IM 70.3 World Championship® and the 111.34 points he scored at The Collins Cup, this gives Iden a nearly unassailable average of 109.62 PTO World Ranking Points. With Jan Frodeno, PTO World No. 2, announcing that he is not expected to race again this season, Iden is set to finish the season as PTO World No. 1. This will be the first year since the PTO Rankings began in 2016 that Frodeno has not been PTO World No. 1 and might signal that the Changing of the Guard has well and truly begun. The PTO World Rankings are based on the average number of PTO World Ranking Points that an athlete has earned for their three best races in 2021. Frodeno's best three races are 112.86 points at The Collins Cup, 107.51 points at Challenge Miami and 88.10 points at Challenge Gran Canaria, giving him an average of 102.82 PTO World Rankings Points. Coaches Corner: I have been using TriDot as an athlete for several months now. The more experience I have with it, the more I've come to appreciate how effective the training has been for me as an athlete. It's made me question how effective my designed training plans are compared to what TriDot provides. I design training plans and workouts based on my knowledge of my athlete, what I assess they are capable of, my training philosophy and what I think is the best future training based on what the athlete has achieved in the past. Summing this up. I'm taking all of an athlete's training data, combined with the filter of my professional training as a coach, my experience as an athlete and a coach, and my philosophies to create the perfect future workouts and training cycles. My crisis is admitting that my training plans are limited by my experience and filters. TriDot is using millions of records from tens of thousands of athletes to make hundreds of calculations to design the perfect workout and training plan. It then automatically adjusts based on your training and if you miss a workout. I am signing up to be a TriDot coach because I believe the platform is that good. But this has caused me to ask the question, what coaching services that am I providing do athletes value most in a coaching relationship? Question: Bill, it's been a while since either of us was actively coached, but question for you: When you accomplished your goal, what services did you appreciate the most? Here's a list of typical coaching services. I'll read the list and you tell me what your top 5 and maybe what would be really low on your list. That work? She won the first Tour de France for women in 1984, covering the 616-mile course in 29 hours, 39 minutes, and 2 seconds. The race was held in July and had 18 stages. The women's tour ran the same time as the men's and finished 2–3 hours before the men each day.[1][2] The year she won the Tour de France Martin suffered from anemia earlier in that year and had been riding poorly. At the race Martin took the lead after stage 14 where the race encountered the mountains. Martin was a good climber and never gave up the lead after that into Paris. The streets were said to contain more two million spectators watching the race. Martin, along with runners up Heleen Hage (Dutch) and Deborah Shumway (American), stood on the podium with male champions Laurent Fignon, Bernard Hinault and Greg LeMond. Fignon's prizes were valued at over $225,000 (adjusted to 2016). Martin was awarded a trophy and $1,000.[3] Martin was inducted into the 2012 Boulder (Colorado) Sports Hall of Fame.[4] Video Of The Week When Mother Nature Says No | DC Peaks 50 Miler 2021 Aid Station Mentality: Enduring Life Challenge's Through Ultra Running Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week. That work? Assessing current fitness and realistic goals Designing a perfect training plan Adjust and redesign training for life events or injuries Test and establish athletes training zones Provide inspiration and encouragement Provide feedback and accountability for training compliance Teach best practices and safety during training Teach swim form, drills, bicycle handling and running form Teach strategies for mental resilience Assess hydration and nutrition needs and develop athlete specific strategies Teach how to setup devices to be congruent with training workouts and compatible with athletes gear Upcoming Guests Marianne Martin is the first woman to win the Tour de France in 1978. Marianne Martin (born November 1, 1957 in Fenton, Michigan) is an American road racing cyclist.

Today's guest is the legendary Greg LeMond and he joins us to share some memories from his storied career and weigh in on the newest products in his signature brand! With many wins under his belt, including the Tour de France in 1986, 1989, and 1990, LeMond is considered by many to be the greatest American cyclist of all time. Our conversation begins on the subject of Greg's brand, LeMond, and the various stages it went through on its evolution to where it is today. Greg talks about the wonder of e-bikes and shares some of the new technologies he is employing to make two new models of this type for his own brand. From there, we get into some of the highs and lows of Greg's career. After winning the Tour de France in 1986, Greg nearly lost his life after getting shot in a hunting accident. This and a cycling crash took a tremendous toll on Greg's health, nearly causing him to quit cycling, but that all changed when he miraculously won the Tour again in '89. We hear about the tense final time trial where Greg took first place from Laurent Fignon, having started the race with the expectation to only place in the top 30 at best. We then get into the culture of doping that began to plague racing in the '90s and how Greg fared competing against cheating riders while battling lead poisoning and over-fatigue. Wrapping up our conversation, Greg talks about cycling culture today as far as doping and enthusiasm for the sport across its various sub-disciplines. For all this and more from Greg about brilliant the places he has ridden, races he has won, and cutting-edge bikes he is building, tune in today!
Two people had been taken into custody, Marseille prosecutor Dominique Laurens said, adding that the probe was targeting a "small part of the team" and that those in custody were part of the "close entourage of the main rider", without naming him. Arkea-Samsic's leader on the Tour was Colombian Quintana, twice a runner-up and also a Vuelta and Giro d'Italia champion. He finished 17th overall on this year's Tour. The French team confirmed that their hotel in Meribel was searched by the OCLAESP, the Central Office for the Fight against Environmental and Public Health Damage, after last Wednesday's 17th stage. Laurens said the search had resulted in the "discovery of many health products, including drugs and especially a method that can be qualified as doping". A source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters that a "saline solution" and "injection material" were found. "The elements gathered during the search will need further investigation and analysis," Laurens said in a statement on Tuesday. Injection material can only be in possession of doctors as per the 'no needle policy' in place in cycling since 2011. Arkea-Samsic team manager Emmanuel Hubert said on Monday that the investigation did "not target the team or its staff directly". Quintana, who was allowed to continue working with his own doctor when he signed a three-year deal with Arkea-Samsic this year, later denied using any banned substances and said he had voluntarily answered investigators' questions with "a clear conscience". We all have our favourite Tour de France out of the 106 editions of this legendary race. For many, 1989's stunning turnaround by Greg LeMond of Laurent Fignon in the final stage on the Champs-Élysées remains one of the greatest moments in sporting history, let alone cycling's crowded canon. A mere eight seconds difference at the end of three weeks of racing – a truly epic battle.Others may cite Eddy Merckx's imperious performance in the 1974 edition, giving the Cannibal his record-equalling fifth Tour victory, with eight stage wins along the way. Some prefer to look back even further, to the great years of Coppi, Bartali and Anquetil.Patriotism often plays a part in our collective memories too, with the previously fallow cycling minnows separated from the European racing heartland by the Channel mining a rich seam since Bradley Wiggins broke the British duck in 2012. For Americans, surely LeMond in 1986 is the standout moment that turned millions of US sport fans into bike racing supporters. And millions of proud Colombians will never forget a youthful Egan Bernal's victory just last year.We asked the Rouleur writers for their personal highlights from La Grande Boucle. They range from 1948 right up to 2019 – races full of surprises, amazing feats and intriguing battles. The Rouleur Longreads Podcast brings you selected long form articles from the magazine, especially recorded for Rouleur.
The epic finish of the 1989 Tour de France which ended in the tightest margin victory in the races history, just 8 seconds, was the culmination of a decades worth of rivalry, team camaraderie, and the career twilight of the racing master who took the young talents under his wing. While the decade ended with a dual of two champions, it started with Bernard Hinault, on the hunt for dominance. Powered by the French industry titans of Renault and Elf, Bernard Hinault led a charge to snag as many Tour championships as he could. Little did he know an injury would open up the opportunity of a lifetime. This led to a battle between Laurent Fignon and Bernard Hinault who left Renault to the newly created, hyped up, La Vie Claire team. Hinault would not only have to race against his young replacement but an up and comer in the form of the American, Greg Lemond. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/Freebooter)

It is 30 years since arguably the greatest Tour de France of all time, decided in the final time trial by just eight seconds. In the first of our two-part Kilometre 0 about the 1989 Tour, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau recall the see-saw nature of the battle between Laurent Fignon and Greg LeMond. Kilometre 0 is supported by Hansgrohe showers and taps.
In 1989, American Greg Lemond won the Tour de France by just eight seconds – the narrowest margin in the 100-year history of the race. Lemond took victory by beating local hero Laurent Fignon in the final time trial on the Champs-Elysees. Greg Lemond talks to Ashley Byrne. The programme is a Made-In-Manchester Production. Welcome to Episode #185 of the Mile High Endurance podcast. You are listening to your weekly connection to coaches, experts and pro athletes to help you reach your endurance goals. We are your hosts coach Rich Soares and 303 Chief Bill Plock. Thanks for joining us for another week of endurance interviews and discussion. This weekend is the start of the 2019 Tour de France. The tour starts in Bruxelles, Belgium and will cover 3,460 km over 21 stages ending on the Champs Elysees in Paris on July 28. Some years there are some clear favorites. Some years there are classic battles. Since the Tour de France began in 1903, there have always been efforts and drama. The 1903 Tour de France was the first cycling race set up and sponsored by the newspaper L'Auto, ancestor of the current daily, L'Équipe. It ran from July 1 to 19 in six stages over 2,428 km (1,509 mi), and was won by Maurice Garin. The 1989 Tour de France was the 76th edition of the Tour de France, one of cycling's Grand Tours and generally considered the most famous bike race in the world. The race consisted of 21 stages and a prologue, over 3,285 km (2,041 mi). It started on July 1 1989 in Luxembourg before taking an anti-clockwise route through France to finish in Paris on 23 July. What made the race so incredible was the GC battle between Greg LeMond of the AD Renting–W-Cup–Bottecchia team, who had spent the previous two seasons recovering from a near-fatal hunting accident. His rival, two-time Tour winner Laurent Fignon (Super U–Raleigh–Fiat). In honor of this weekend begin the start of the Tour, we have author Nige Tassel who tells the story of the most famous bike race I the world and this epic battle in the book Three Weeks Eight Seconds. Thanks to last week's discussion guest Darryl Griffiths of Shotz Nutrition to talk about sweat testing, hydration and fueling. I'm really excited about this topic. The naming of Early career management development Collection of personal experiences Topics inspired by real life experiences and supported by the context of our expert guests Quest for knowledge and what coaching is for me Podcast as a way to learn How and why I became a coach Last week we had Darryl Griffiths to talk about sweat testing. He showcased how his company's protocol works for determining an athlete's sweat rate and sodium concentration to help athletes know factually how much sweat and sodium they are losing in certain environmental conditions. I love this interview because it really helps crack the performance code for any athlete. We use the term "no guessing" a lot on this show and it really is part of a philosophy that I embrace with respect to training. I encourage my athletes to know the facts with respect to their body's sweat rate, sodium concentration, metabolic rates, and glycogen stores. We can do some of this ourselves, as in the DIY version of a sweat rate test, however some tests need to be done in a lab. While I know exactly how much training an athlete is performing and have performance data to indicate to see if the training objectives are being met, I don't know what's really going on inside the athlete's body without some additional information. The past week I had my weekly meeting with Matt to review testing results from CU Sports Medicine and Performance. Matt is training for his first 70.3 and has been building is training volume steadily with periodic field testing and recovery weeks. He has one "rest day" each week. Again, I know how much training volume he is performing, but we didn't yet know his fuel metabolism (fuel economy) at different intensities or his glycogen stores (how well he's refilling the gas tank after each training day). Matt got his test results back and indicated a below average to very low "Fuel Rating" for various leg muscles. This tells Matt that his fuel storage is not keeping up with the demands of training. Keep in mind that we follow the 80/20 rule, generally speaking so we try to avoid "grey zone" training. Add to the this test result, that Matt has been challenged to get his HR in target zones during some run sets recently. This sets off some alarms for me as a coach. Back when we did the interview with Dr. Inigo San Milan, he explained that We have just started tracking his macronutrients, so it will be interesting to see where this takes us. We are also going to start tracking sleep data. Not just reported hours of sleep, but actually collecting data. I learned from my time as a failing math major in college, if it doesn’t add up, you don’t have all the numbers. We may need some help unlocking some knowledge with respect to nutrition and sleep. If needed, we'll reach out for expert advice. We have a pretty solid set of experts to put him in touch with. Video of the Week: Greatest Tour de France Finish, 1989! Midturn, “I bounced off the grill of a brand-new Ford F-150,” she recalled. “I flew through the air and landed on the westbound shoulder.” According to a story that ran later that day in the local newspaper, the Boulder Daily Camera, Willerton made her turn in front of the driver, Stephen Gray, then 62, who was traveling in the same direction and hit her from behind. Willerton never lost consciousness, but she suffered six broken ribs, a triple pelvic fracture, chipped teeth, and a collapsed lung, among other injuries. Eindelijk Parijs.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Three-Time Tour de France Winner Greg LeMond and Dr. Mark Hom, the authors of The Science of Fitness:Power, Performance and Endurance. Born on June 26, 1961, Greg Lemond was the most talented rider in the mid to late 1980's. He was a proven performer in two of the biggest races of the year: the Tour de France and the World Championship Road Race. Lemond may have been the most talented cyclist to come from the US. He could sprint, time trial and climb with the best. He was a master at peaking for the big events and was a force in the Grand Tours and one-day races. Only 5 riders have won more titles in the Tour de France and only 4 riders have won more titles in the World Championship Road Race. Lemond is 1 of only 5 riders to win the Tour de France / World Championship Road Race double in one year. Lemond won the Tour de France three times, in 1986 in front of Bernard Hinault of France and Urs Zimmermann of Switzerland, in 1989, in front of Laurent Fignon of France and Pedro Delgado of Spain, and in 1990, in front of Claudio Chiappucci of Italy and Erik Breukink of Holland.
